Re:Is it true...
I thought they were from the Cat detector van?
-
Re:The change
but Möbius loops are more fun because you end up in sites that look like this!

Re:Save this one for your next party
Tron guy is off topic, AC.. This would be an excellent time however to mention the Astor Place Cube Prank. A little background: In the middle of Astor Place (the no mans land between west 8th and st. mark's place in new york city) is an island of sidewalk with a humungous black cube that stands (stood) on one of its corners. You could even push it and get it to spin (with a few participants, that thing is big). It was a pretty well known landmark. It is reportedly being "fixed and renovated right now" and will be back, something to do with the luxury condo's they built on the site of a former parking lot there.

Re:Butter
This is probably true, which is surprising since Google is one of the sites filtered by China's Greate Firewall. If I recall correctly that's part of the reason the Google Mirror was set up.
-
I Predict...
a new use for the cat detector van.

Re:Obviously...
GOOGLE spelled backwards is Echelon
funny, i thought it was elgoog -
Err...
by nicely asking the people in the cat detector van perhaps?...
-
Yes but
The important question is : will google.org get mirrored too?

Sure thing, here.

Re:Sites you can('t) get
I know google is banned, but according to a New Scienctist article, elgoog, the "backwards" google mirror, is not. I'm pretty sure you can access the caches through that, but the site is slow. And I don't think it can handle all of China trying to access it, though it's supposed to be quite popular.
Death to censorship. -
elgooG
I haven't tried this myself as I've never been in China, but I've heard that searches via elgooG would effectively bypass "the great firewall". Just a rumour for me though. Could anyone verify this?
-
Re:A little respect
Do you mean a Mirror of Google?
-
elgooG
Well I wonder if "elgooG" will be able to help the poor old rice pickers.
http://www.alltooflat.com/geeky/elgoog/
For those that don't know elgoog is literally a mirror (not in the true sense, but in the image and text sense) of Google, everything is backwards, when you search you even have to type your search in backwards.
However I'm sure most of you /. crowd already know about this.
Sadly I couldn't seem to connect, maybe China sent a few nukes to the address of the server. -
Re:If in China....
We did it before:
Google Mirror Beats the Great Firewall of China
and we'll do it again:
Swen Elgoog -
Re:slashdotting
No, no, no... Use this Mirror...

Geeks Gone Wild?
Yeah, this is definitely the first thing I thought of.
"We put the titty back in http://." -
Google Mirror

Proxy server
Actually, there's some prior art in this very area. elgooG is a "Google Mirror" that claims it's been used in China for a similar purpose. This was discussed here a couple years ago.

Not all is blocked
Interestingly, the Google Mirror is NOT blocked, allowing full access to google through the inverting proxy created by alltooflat.

elgooG

Loop Holes
On its FAQ:
1.12. Did people in China really use the Google Mirror after China blocked Google?
Yes. We received numerous emails from web surfers in China thanking us for this service.
1.13. I heard that China also blocked other websites that used Google. Why didn't China block elgooG too?
We believe that elgooG survived the Great Firewall of China because the firewall operators thought that elgooG was a joke and not a fully functional version of Google.

Re:Has nobody noticed these ports being wide open?
I thought I was going to get lectured and then you actually give me an answer to my question. Nice. That would be pretty funny to redirect everthing to that snoop dog "turn a site into shizzle speak" or redirect Google to elgooG.
Does it effect you in anyway aside from /letting/ you use their access point?
No, you're right, it doesn't affect me, its purely for the fun of it.
But on the other hand, why, exactly, is it required that "teaching somebody a lesson" and doing it for fun and frolic be mutually exclusive. So I have a bit of a mean streak. Like I said though, I think it would be counterproductive to do anything to their setup as that will alert them to their open router and result in (if they're smart) the router to be locked down to the point that I can no longer utilize it. -
Google mirror
If google is slashdotted, or too slow, try this google mirror.
-
Re:Slash
Yeah. Google Mirror

Re:Mirror
And just in case, here is a google mirror.

Re:New Google trick!!!
Sorry if this is "so last week
Actually, apparently it's so 18 months ago. The site FAQ shows that it was featured on Slashdot on Sept 8, 2002 and (in true Slashdot dupe tradition) Sept 12, 2002).

Geeky Sex Puns
No one does geeky sex puns like All Too Flat's Geeks Gone Wild. (Shameless self promotion, but it's so damn funny you'll probably forgive me)

Re:Time to make choices
Ya know, I have a more difficult time sleeping every time I pop those tasty sugar cubes. I have no idea why.
No penguins were harmed in the forming of this post.

Re:A Mirror Just in Case
That's not a google mirror. THIS is a google mirror.
:-P -
Re:Never mind solving themThey are actually quite easy to solve. I have a little book that gives a systematic way to solve them. At one time, I could do it without peeking at the book, but I haven't done it in awhile. I can solve one in less than 5 minutes though.
Anyhow, this is VERY funny.

Re:The coolest cube by far....
Nope. By far the coolest Rubik's Cube was this little prank in New York City.
-
Re:Hello, editors??!
Your's slashdotted already. Use the real google mirror.

Re:If you're a Google H4X0R...
My god, so many links to google here; let me provide a Google mirror just in case they get slashdotted!!
-
Re:If you're a Google H4X0R...
me likes this one even better
-
Re:If you're a Google H4X0R...
Try this Elgoog
:) -
!elgoogthe link in the article is new to me, but one of the more interesting ones i have found on my own is elgooG. Not only is the whole page flipped, but to actually search for something, you have to type it backwards (or you get some even stranger results!)

Re:IN CHINA
Actually, IN SOVIET RUSSIA, they use elgooG.
