Remember Harvard!
If Mark Zuckerburg is wired into the network, coding and drinking late at night, he can crash the Facebook campus network the same way he crashed the Harvard campus network? So much for intelligent design.

Actually, you can already change the name of Alexa to "Computer" if you want to. "Alexa" is really just the device's wake word, and you can change the wake word to one of these four:
- Alexa

- Amazon

Re:USB-A did not "just work" at outset either.
There are Thunderbolt 3 Cables that do in fact fall back to USB3 when used with a USB only device. It has to as it's part of the specification to support both USB 3, USB 2, power delivery, and DisplayPort. Those that do not fall back to USB 3 are violating the Thunderbolt specifications. Don't buy cables that don't meet specifications.
I searched for "thunderbolt 3 cable" on Google and here's some of the results. Check the specifications yourself.
These meet the specification.

https://www.apple.com/shop/pro...These don't.
http://www.caldigit.com/Thunde...It sucks that we have to watch out for not compliant cables but that was a problem for a very long time. Don't buy cheap shit.

I don't get it
I don't get why anyone would want a surface book? Unless you're an MS fanboy I guess.
Why not either:
1. Pay less for a better laptop? (e.g. https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834234722)
2. Pay a lot less for a 2-in-1 (e.g. Lenovo Yoga or Dell 2-in-1)
3. Pay a lot less for a tablet with a keyboard and trackpad case for ipad or for android? -
Re:NVMe and M.2 ports will likely boost PC sales
Nah, you can just get a $15 adapter and put it in any PCIe 4x slot. By the way, if you really want crazy performance get a X399 motherboard with PCIe bifurcation and load it up with quad NVMe cards and you can go nuts with 28GB/s in an 8-way RAID 0 configuration. Not that you'd really notice at consumer queue depths.

Re:CO2 is not bad....
Chances are, you are already living under a MUCH higher CO2 environment. A buddy of mine bought a CO2 meter and let me borrow it for a while. Inside a closed room, like that which you sleep in every night, CO2 levels EASILY reach greater than 1000 PPM because there is NOTHING converting the CO2 that you are generating with every breath back to O2 like outside where all the plants are living (outdoor air is usually around 390 to 420 PPM at the moment).
Worried about CO2? Plant some trees and crack open a window.

Seriously, read the book...
The author of "Chaos Monkeys: Obscene Fortune and Random Failure in Silicon Valley" got hired by Facebook to revamp their advertising system by combining Facebook's logged in and anonymous user data with third-party demographic data. If you think you're browsing Facebook anonymously, the advertising system knows who you are. If the advertising system knows who you are, so does the recommendation system.

Re:Dang it!
I've been carrying a $99 Kindle Paperwhite for ages without a case and it seems to be holding up fine.
This device seems very overpriced.
The Verge article says it's
https://www.theverge.com/2017/...
The new Oasis ships at the end of October and is replacing last yearâ(TM)s Oasis, leaving four Kindles total in Amazonâ(TM)s lineup: the original Kindle ($80), the Kindle Paperwhite ($120), Kindle Voyage ($200), and the Oasis, which starts at $250 for an 8GB model. Thatâ(TM)s double the base storage of previous Kindles, which Amazon says is to accommodate the storage of audio books. It also connects over both Wi-Fi and 4G LTE.
And Amazon say the 32GB model is $299
https://www.amazon.com/Staging...
Compared to the $119 Kindle Paperwhite that's a lot of cash.

Physical is Cheaper than Digital
Off topic a bit, but I noticed that on Amazon, Burning Chrome is cheaper as a paperback than the Kindle version.
I'm seeing $9.49 for the Kindle and $8.11 for the paperback. As a Prime member, shipping is $0.00.

Trees would seem to be more expensive that bits down the wire. Dystopia.

I've answered this question yesterday...
The title was licensed from "The Bladerunner" by Alan E. Nourse, which is a story about illegal surgical implements.
The story is based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" by Philip K. Dick, about a cop "retiring" androids.

Re:so.... MS was sick
He was the only person who ever read the Bill Gates book, "The Road Ahead," without mentioning how the Microsoft visionary almost missed the Internet.

Re:Slashdot readers should sure hope so
I believe you failed to mention the theft of intellectual property when Microsoft hired David Cutler and his VMS team to write critical parts of Windows NT. That theft was part of the downfall of DEC. It was coupled with the wholesale theft of their hardware designs to create the Pentium chip.
IIRC, DEC sidelined David Cutler's project and were planning to close his West Coast R&D office. Under those circumstances, DEC shot themselves in the foot by being unable to retain top talent.

Reminds me of Bill Gates and MS
Everyone in the position of pitching paradigm-shifting inventions to tech giants should read this book, written by the founder of a company with a pen-based mobile device in the early '90s. John Sculley got wind of it because Kaplan tried to hire away a top Apple engineer, and told him too much; the result was Apple's "innovative" Newton product. Gates learned about it because Kaplan was hoping to partner with MS; Gates and his lieutenant Jeff Raikes spent a full day at Go going over every single gesture, then returned to Redmond where they proceeded to knock it off as Pen Windows. Kaplan also dishes on his eventual business partners IBM and AT&T.
