Talk to these guysThe story
" An Austrian architecture firm has designed a high-tech monument and grave site concept to be available to clients in the United States beginning this summer. The design combines earth, water and light with stainless steel, solar cells and an LED display reminiscent of a calculator."
LEDs are kind of tacky. I'd go for wide-screen and surround sound. -
Re:How much press will it get, though?
I remember the UN not condoning the US actions
The UN passed 17 unanimous resolutions under Chapter VII of the UN Charter. If you care to read the UN Charter, Chapter 7 resolutions are binding and all members are required to enforce them. The United States was acting in full authority of those 17 resolutions.
Whoah.... keep it up! I also liked your whole "irrelevant" response.
It is irrelevant. Saddam was required to prove that he had destroyed his weapons, and he did not. Without this proof, not only is is reasonable to suspect that he still has the weapons, but it would be irresponsible not to.
And I don't think it is too far fetched to assume that there still are weapons to be found. I mean, it did take us over 6 months to find his air force jets buried in the desert. The guy had 12 years to hide his weapons. You can find some damn good hiding spots in 12 years.
you right wingers are way more enteraining now that when you tried to pretend that a blowjob was Americans #1 enemy.
President Clinton's impeachment was about perjury. It doesn't matter what he perjured himself about, but it is not acceptable to have the head of the Executive branch of the government (responsible for enforcing laws) violating one of the most basic laws in our legal system. -
Shitloads of "first ever unmanned helis"
It seems that almost everyone and their dog are out their with unique and "first ever" unmanned helicopters. Honda joins the fun with their Robocopter (Ananova)
Scientists say they have developed the world's first unmanned helicopter that's flown entirely by artificial intelligence. Honda says its miniature Robocopter can detect and negotiate obstacles on the way to its destination. After each flight it becomes more sophisticated by recording and comparing data about previous voyages. Spokesman Martin Moll said: ''The helicopter is amazing it really is a breakthrough in artificial intelligence. ''We hope that through the helicopter project we will be able to develop safer cars that can automatically find their way around obstacles and obstructions." -

Australian Patents...>Thankfully I live in Australia, where we don't have anywhere near as many stupid software patents...
No they just have a patent on the wheel. Issued in 2001.
More interestingly -- their patent search site, starts with "Don't reinvent the wheel."

In Soviet Russia... No really!
Almost really. These NEO-communists (NEO, get it?) might like a return to the "good old days". (Actually they probably did it so people would take their picture, it would get carried by newswires, and someone would eventually post it to Slashdot. I hope they're happy now.)

Another Study: Counting Calories does not help...http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_836098.html?
m enu=news.scienceanddiscoveryA six-month study in America has found some calories cause people to put on more weight than others.
The survey of 65 overweight and obese adults - 70% of whom had type 2 diabetes - found that those put on a moderate fat diet containing almonds lost more weight than those on a low-fat diet without almonds.
But the total number of calories for both groups was the same.
And other factors such as protein intake were also maintained at equal levels.
The waistline measurements of those on the moderate fat diet with almonds fell by 14%, compared with 9% for the other group.
Fat mass figures also fell by 10% more in the group on the almond diet.
The results - published in the International Journal of Obesity - cast doubt on widely held beliefs about dieting.
It has long been assumed that a key to losing weight is cutting calorie intake.

The Anatomy Of A Staged War +1, Superpatiotic
Saddam offered a deal to the U.S. but Cheney-Rumsfeld decided that money for corporations was more important.

PlayStation 2s in Iraq
Back a few years ago the Feds released a report that PS2s were being shipped to Iraq to build a military supercomputer. They were able to double-demonize Saddam, since they claimed that not only were the consoles being used to power weapons systems, but they also were adding to the scarcity of the systems.

at what price longevity?
C. elegans that affect the activity of insulin and removed gonad tissue, which affects endocrine hormone levels.
So the Doctor told me, "...okay so you can live for 500 years. All we have to do is remove your nads."
Clearly, this process is do for some refinement before it's ready for mass comsumption. Ananova also covers this. -

Conflicting information!
Hey, wait a minute! I saw an article yesterday at Ananova in the UK that said the universe is football-shaped.
Well? Which is it? Hunh? -
Baker was misquoted
Baker didn't even make it as a claim. It's right there in the original article (the one this story links to misquotes him) that he was giving his opinion.
Speaking of Tom Baker, a couple of recent links: an mp3 of Tom fooling around with a commercial voiceover that's been circulating on the blogs lately, and another website with some Dr. Who prank calls, comedy skits, and also that aforementioned outtakes mp3. -
Re:Actually
Yes, Tom Baker is great but he is as mad as a crate full of squirrels. Ananova reports that he reckons Melinda Messenger would make a good assisstant because:
'Melinda would be good as she can scream and has bosoms. It doesn't really matter if she can act.' -

Re:GPS Reception
I remember looking through some websites of UK companies who specialise in custom, low-power x86 compatible embedded systems. They had a product that they had created for a client which was a GPS transmitter in a can.
I'm sure these aren't that uncommon, I know Budweiser and Coors have already had promotions like this before.
You won't be able to use GPS to scan for the cans because they only start operating when opened. Yeah, some device to detect electronics might work close-up but you'd need to be close-up to every can. You may detect which pallet has a winning can in at the factory but you still wouldn't be able to track it to it's final destination or guarantee you'll be around when that can goes on sale

No kidding...Did you check out the link at the bottom of that story? Sounds like an interesting place, to say the least.
Ukrainian parliamentary candidate strips in appeal to voters
Ukrainian parliamentary candidate strips in appeal to voters
A Ukrainian parliamentary candidate attempted to woo voters by shedding most of her clothes in a televised political address.
Olena Solod, a 28-year-old housewife, stripped down to her underwear during a live TV address to voters in the southeastern city Zaporizhia.
Her show was later broadcast by several TV channels.
"I am the reflection of the real life," said Ms Solod.
Ms Solod is running for a parliamentary seat in the March 31 ballot.
Last year, she expressed interest in having her name changed to Osama bin Laden.
She and her husband also protested last year at a McDonald's restaurant in downtown Zaporizhia, asking people not to buy burgers in a gesture of support for Afghanistan.
Story filed: 19:30 Thursday 7th March 2002
You could easily come up with a vast number of similarly bizarre stories for anywhere in the world, but having these two linked together gives such an interesting impression. -
Ukraine one crazy place.
This is the same Ukraine that just decided to ban class rooms being used as brothels.

Convenient that you don't have a source for this. One would think that reneging on a promise to donate around $80 million would go unreported by anyone. Especially after he donated twelve Harley Davidson motorcycles to stuntmen. Or did that not happen either?

A more detailed version of the article...
is available on the BBC's news site. Apparently the article on Ananova was edited a little too completely for space, and lost the explanation of the reason for the study.
The full article makes clear that Prof. Cox's work is used in the design of facilities like concert halls, train stations, etc. In other words, the duck was incidental. What he was concerned with was the qualities that reduced the echo.
Suggesting his work deserves an IgNoble (as someone earlier in the thread offered) begs comparisons to Sen. Proxmire. Try to be a little better informed before you criticize so broadly.

Re:Guinness
The idea is *just* to increase speed. Its for the pubs (or more likely, "trendy bars"), as pointed out here, where queues become a problem. From the ananonva article, its been done by the people who do Carling, which is a beer for people who don't like their insides very much (personal preference, I hate the stuff), and have both a short attention span and no ability to wait it out patiently at a packed bar.
I want my beer served at 4degC, in 117.5 seconds (or whatever the advert claims), with a little shamrock on the top ;) -

Re:Intercommunication?-Interactive moments.
"If they could communicate, they could tell eachother to shut the hell up. That would be pretty entertaining. Of course I only see this going in the direction of the dolls having annoying, long, drawn-out conversations about each 'interesting' aspect of the park."
Funny, and frightening would be all the dolls in line striking up a conversation amoung themselves.
Doll1 to Doll2:So you just came from Tomorrowland. How was it?
Doll2 to Doll1: Oh it was OK. My kid (grumble, grumble) kept dragging me around.
Doll3 to Doll2:Oh tell me about it. Aren't they just the worse?
Doll2 to Doll3:\whispering\
Hey! How about we ditch the kids and go sight-seeing in Orlando?
Doll3 to Doll2: Oh keen! We can shop, and drive fast. Tease the cops. Get on Fox.
Doll1 to the other two: Hey! Can I join you?
The others: Sure. We're certainly old enough. -
Translating Bibles/Amazon.com/etc...Today, the biggest leader in translating Bibles into other languages is the Church of the Latter Day Saints
Because of the large volume of required input language into the system, I don't think that this system will be good for translating Bibles into new languages (think Wycliffe USA).
The advantage of this system, as it would pertain towards helping a particular religious community, is to make it easier to translate the large amount of books on religion into other languages more accurately.
The Czech schoolboys who worked so hard to make a Czech translation of the Harry Potter books would no longer have to wait so long for translations. Rather, the book could be fed through the statistical system and in under a day (minus proofreading) there could be a very nice translation into any mainstream language you wanted.
The advantage here would not be in translating Bibles into new languages, but rather translating massive amounts of books on the subject of Christianity to various languages.
Perhaps this technology would even have a use with Amazon's online digital book project in allowing all of the books on their site to be effeciently translated into other languages and marketed digitally. Interesting concept, to have all of the resources of Amazon.com in digital format for any mainstream language. That could do amazing things for the cross-country circle of ideas and thoughts.
Just my 3.14159 cents...

clint :) -

Apparently, many people within the scientific community are beginning to question why distributed computing is being used for SETI@home instead of a project with more scientific merit.

Re: a touch screen to order from would be a blessiMy point was, why add to the problem. For example, I don't let anyone else touch my keyboard or my phone at the office. I wash my hands after going to the can (unlike 90% of the population), and when preparing food.
Or you could check out this: An Austrian restaurant which was closed after 60 people fell ill with salmonella poisoning has installed CCTV cameras to make sure staff wash their hands.
