The U.S. has a history of thinking we can't be outdone. Try the Big Three auto makers in the 70's. They were caught sleeping and allowed Honda to become huge in the U.S. And the auto industry is suffering again right now, for essentially the same reasons, no innovation. Yeah, a market system will keep things in check, but only if there is a real market. A few mergers here, a little resting on laurels there and a lot of people will be surprised. And the U.S. is not doing all that well anyway. Have you seen all the construction in China lately?

This is only tangentially related, but I thought /.ers would enjoy seeing this space elevator concept video, made by my friend Alan Chan. He's done special effects for LOTR and Harry Potter, so the production values on this video are much nicer than your standard NASA flick.

but i am saddend that Lucas gave up 20 years of creativity to make the starwars movies instead of making movies that he really liked. THX was his best movie he's ever made... at least to me.. because you can see the creativity put into making it.

Anyway, the real point of this post is that what you describe is already happening (and has been happening for a while) in sites like iFILM, Atomfilms and Pocketmovies, just to name a few that I can think of right now. As a 3D animator wannabe I still check them from time to time to see new animated shorts.

Your telling me you have never seen independant films on the 'net? You must not have looked. For starters, check out atom films. They have a wide variety of styles, and some really good content. There a lot of good indi films out there, you just have to look for them. Try google.
