Re:Divine Litigation
What does fiber optic cable transmit? Light. And who is responsible for light?
The role and liability of light goes far deeper than that. When a CD is originally ripped and files made for pirating, how is that CD read? That's right - a "laser" is used to steal the original bits, and what is a "laser"? Why, it's light! I think the RIAA has a pretty good case here and it wouldn't be too shocking for them to announce an attack against the forces of light. However, would the RIAA be so foolhearty as to go up against somebody who has a very litigious streak of His own? Let's hope so - it would almost be as ideal as if they were going up against IBM's lawyers. -

Re:Open source is INNormally, I am only sympathetic to trolls and troll-like behaviour. However, I have to question, how is the parent post a troll? It clearly should be modded "Insightful".
how about Linus' recent make over? Talk about queer eye for the geek guy. The guy looks a lot better now
Not to undermine open source, but the guy used to look like a complete dork.
Maybe Linus can help remove the geek stereotype that is so often associated with Linux
It should be obvious that Linus was a complete dork. That is not trolling but instead a clear statement. Perhaps, if anything, this is so obvious that it should have been modded down "-1, Redundant". Quite truly, I respect Linus and I respect Bill Joy as well but they used to both be fairly nerdy (haven't checked on Bill Joy recently so I cannot comment on if he still is a dork).
Perhaps the most amazing part is that the insightful parent post was modded down yet this obvious troll was modded "2, Insightful" as the time of my posting right now.
This just shows how fucked the system is here at Slashdot and is the reason I started trolling in the first place...

GANDALF IS ON TEH SPOKE!!!Fans Outraged at New Character in The Return of the King
By Brian BriggsWellington, New Zealand - A recently leaked trailer for The Return of the King has Tolkien fans outraged over the apparent addition of a new character - Jar-Jaromir. The scene depicted in the trailer shows Jar-Jaromir shouting, "Gondora gonna fallsa"; he then trips over a corpse and knocks down a couple of Uruk-hai.
Producers of The Lord of the Rings trilogy confirmed the addition of the half-brother of Boromir and Faramir.
"While The Two Towers is performing better at the box office than The Fellowship of the Ring, we are worried about a demographic that is skewing much older than desired. More mature fans are very good to have, but it's the younger fans who buy the merchandise. That's really what brings in the bucks on a movie like this," said producer Tim Wilcox.
"People complained a lot about Gimli just being there for comic relief," continued Wilcox. "We answer that criticism by directing the humor through Jar-Jaromir in The Return of the King. There's this funny scene where Jar-Jaromir decides it's best to hand the ring over to Sauron, but then he drops it and kicks it into Mount Doom. Hi-larious."
Purists, miffed by the deviations in The Two Towers, were so enraged by Jar-Jaromir as to be rendered speechless. A less pure, calmer fan who was able to form words said, "Tolkien mentioned a lot of different races and creatures, but never a Gungan or even a half-Gungan. I think I'm going to vomit."
One fan tried to rationalize the move. "Maybe the Star Wars universe and Middle-earth intersect. Middle-earth certainly is a long time ago and why couldn't it be in 'a galaxy far, far away?' Nothing said it's our earth." He then broke down and started crying.
Director Peter Jackson explained how the Jar-Jaromir character was added after all the other footage had already been shot. "That's the brilliant thing about digital editing and graphics. We didn't even imagine Jar-Jaromir in the movie until a couple of weeks ago, but now we can just edit him right into the key scenes. I really think it's going to be a hit with the toddlers."
Jackson added, "I just love it when he shouts, 'Yousa steala precious from meesa!'"
Oh, and Gandalf returns, Gollum steals the ring and falls into mount doom, the elves leave Middle Earth. I think that covers everything.

A good launching for Jar-Jaromir
The fabled new character from Return of the King would be an ideal inclusion on this new Hobbit movie. 8)

Buying into an unfair deal doesn't make it fairDont get me wrong on this, Im no way in favour of DRM. But if people are going to buy things from IMS then they know its got it. Its not the same as me buying a CD and finding i cant play it on my PC. Not by a long stretch. Now, if apple didnt tell you they use DRM on IMS then id agree that its only fair to expect to be able to use it elsewhere, but they dont, so i wouldnt. tightly controlled, overpriced, and incompatible market.
An unfair deal is still an unfair deal even if you accept it. The logic of "people buy it therefore it's ok" is unfortunately the same logic people are using to say that DRM wrapped online music sales works. BBspot has some fun things to say about that. At the end of the day iTunes is still giving you less than you deserve, and there is absolutely no reason to be an apologist for the monumental amount of screwing that's going on here.

Lame, and a ripoff
Not only is this not very funny (why is it on
/.?), I'm willing to bet that the person who submitted it first saw it via bbspot (under 'What Should You Do'). bbspot as a satire/humor site periodically can throw up the clunker of a dumb link, but why is slashdot choosing this as the best of humor/news for nerds on the web?
Whatever. Give credit next time when you see a link on another site and then submit it here. -

Microsoft Purchases Evil From Satan
by Brian Briggs
Redmond, WA - Microsoft purchased evil from Satan for $2.7 billion after many months of tough negotiations.
"We've been after Satan for some time," said CEO Steve Ballmer. "Negotiations were tough, but I think both Microsoft and the Prince of Darkness are happy with this deal."
Microsoft already controls 15% of the evil market, and with this purchase that number nears 100%. The Department of Justice voiced concerns over one corporation controlling so much evil, and launched investigations.
"We feel that there are real opportunities with evil, and that when evil is integrated into our next generation of Windows products consumers will appreciate evil on their desktop," said Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates. "Businesses haven't been able to fully realize their evil potential. With evil integrated into Office XP, corporations big and small will begin to see enhanced evil productivity."
"Evil is a real growing market," market strategist Frank Dresgan of Merrill Lynch explained. "Microsoft is a little late in the game, but even when they enter a market late they still tend to dominate. I think we'll see the same results with evil."
"I've been dealing with Microsoft for some time," Lucifer said. "I've been at this evil thing for millions of years, and wanted a way out. I considered an IPO, but then Steve-O and Billy came along and told me about their 'Evil Everywhere' plan. I just couldn't refuse."
Evil was founded by Satan close to the beginning of time. It has been growing steadily ever since, although most of the growth has accelerated in the past five years with the development of the Internet. Satan plans to retire to a small island in the Bahamas and write a column for the local newspaper.
