Re:Too Much Imagination Required?
Filthy thinks the lack of imagination is an intentional marketing decision, because "fat fucking fan boys... don't want original because that takes imagination, which they don't have."

Has Filthy ever steered us wrong?

It's worth waiting for Ffilthy's review
I always enjoy his reviews, even if I don't agree with them.

For unparalleled movie reviews such as those you've described, I highly recommend The Filthy Critic. He has unique, generally exceptional reviews, and they are often hilarious to boot.

Re:If that's the best, they're in trouble.
Batman Begins was arguably the best superhero movie ever.
Really? That doesn't bode well for other superhero movies then:
Batman Begins is all about overreaching, trying to turn kid's stuff into
grown up's stuff. Those dumbasses want to pretend to tell a poignant and
powerful tale when what they have is a guy who dresses like a bat and
fights bad guys in bad Mexican wrestling masks all fancied up with
simplistic psychobabble. Batman is a god damn comic book for kids,
something with mail order seven-foot ghosts, X-ray goggles, Sea Monkeys
and 132 Army Men for $1.95. But it has been clung to by legions of
fucking freaks who would rather drag their childhood obsessions into old
age than grow up and move on. Try some books with more words and fewer
pictures.
Link to my favorite review of "Batman Begins".Don't get me wrong, I loved Chris Nolan's "Memento". I've just never been that big a fan of comic books or their movies. And yes, that includes "graphic novels". Stop being so pretentious and just call them what they are: comic books.

Re:Gonzo == crap
IMHO, the best reviews on the net:
http://www.bigempire.com/filthy
One could draw some paralells between his style and Gonzo. -
Because It's the State of Our Union
Someone is paying for this crap (watching it) because it's still being funded and shoved in our faces all over the television sets and banner ad space on the web. Hollywood hasn't crumbled yet due to lack of patrons. I think they are pushers and the mindless public are sitcom junkies looking for an escape. Hollywood could make a feature length movie out of Friends and it would probably get rave reviews like "the funniest film of the summer," "the best comedy of the year," and (my one of my favorites) "a roller-coaster ride of laughs and guffaws that will leave you breathless and in tears." The Filthy Critic loves to quote the "quote whores" that just spout off meaningless drivel because it makes them sound like movie critics worthy of getting paid for their "professional" reviews. By the way, I didn't see anyone else paying homage to old Filthy, so make sure you check out his page. http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/ He's had a string of one finger movies lately. No surprise there. Overall, movie theatre attendance is on the decline and has been for years. I remember a few years back hearing a lengthy report on NPR talking about this. I learned a lot from the report, including things like how theatres are renting movies from distrubutors and the majority of ticket prices for the first few months go straight to distributors. This is why theatres charge so bloody much for concessions, it's the main place they make their revenue. I swear they'd sell three times as much if they'd cut the prices by two-thirds, but that would be too logical. It's no different than what Hollywood is doing with declining movies. Movie attendance is down, so they jack up prices to compensate on the revenues. Again, someone is paying, so they have incentive to keep up the status quo. (Why does the image of beating an aged and nearly dead, overburdened cart horse come to mind?)
As someone who has worked in the fan based science-fiction convention scene now for many years, I see the written word on the decline. No, I don't think books will die, but it simply reflects out society. Most of the people I see attending reading panels (where the author reads their own works), or writing panels, or anything else to do with actual written science/fantasy fiction, are an older crowd. This simply correlates to the rest of society. We are a media oriented society now. X-boxes, mindless movies, flashy cartoons on television that move at warp speed and don't even give a chance for the audience to revel in a good laugh (think Bugs Bunny and compare to Power Puff Girls), and MTV. Oh lords of Hollywood, let us not forget MTV, which has completed it's de-evolution into the "Shiny Things Network." Hey kids, try some books. Go slow at first, your brain needs to come up to speed. On yet another side note, as my post is full of them, I love Harry Potter stories. It's gotten so many teens and young adults to actually read and not even be phased at the thought of 500 pages or more.
It's a safe bet that the majority of Slashdot readers are going to be fans of Science Fiction. I myself enjoy the Stargates on Sci-Fi channel. I watch them because there's not a lot else to watch and it's a fun, affordable, relaxing and safe way to spend a Friday evening. I also watch them because they preceed Battlestar Galactica and like any good headliner band, your are going to sit through the opening act to watch what you really came to see. (More on this in a moment.) This Atlantis scene that captured the "emotion and emergency" I just don't get. I find the Stargates to be a franchise that Sci-Fi channel is milking and the writing to be lacking. I find the characters to be exceptionally two dimensional with zero depth and development in the last many seasons. Yes, I realize that Atlantis isn't that old. I stand by my statement. I think the writers are too comfortable in their characters. Perhaps they think we wish to see David Hewitt become the most supreme smart ass of all times. I'm j -
70's humped dry, on to the 80's
To paraphrase The Filthy Critic -- http://www.bigempire.com/filthy -- apparently the grassfuckers in Hollywood have humped the 70's dry and there's nothing left to remake, so now they want to ass rape the pop classics of the 80's as well.
I still can't belive they are remaking Superman. -
One other review worth reading...
A movie review worth reading because it's more entertaining than the movie itself...
http://www.bigempire.com/filthy/bloodrayne.html
"Bloodrayne sucks goat tits. It sucks shit and smelly ass. It sucks the husks off corn, the foreskin off dicks, the shit off the submissive in a Dirty Sanchez. It sucks harder and more sloppily than a Bennigan's waitress on her lunch break, but costs slightly less. It is, however, better than Alone in the Dark. That's not to say it's good, it's just that it's like getting a staph infection below the knee instead of the entire leg."
"For the actors, appearing in a Uwe Boll is a declaration that they act for money and have costly addictions that must be fed. It also declares that they have less self-respect than a Tri-Delt. It's like falling on a spiral of shame and bumping your head on every step all the way down to the bottom."
"Bloodrayne is pure shit. So pure that if people shot up shit instead of heroin this would be a million bucks a kilo. But they don't, and turds should have a warning labels before anyone tries."
You know, one day he's not going to hold back. -
This is one of those movies . . .
You want filthy to review . . . and then he does.

Don't forget the Filthy review!
The Filthy Critic's review is also available. Have a look. Of course, he hates just about everything...but he reserved some of the best words I've seen in any review for Bloodrayne:

Re:This was a review? This is news?
And most reviews are, what, unassailable fact?
No, but they usually have more substance than, "I loved it, anyone who doesn't is stoopid!"
All reviews are opinions.
Not entirely true. A review is not _just_ an opinion. It may essentially boil down to an opinion, but a good review actually dissects a movie and tells you why it's good or bad. Most reviews are just opinions with hand-waving, but for instance The Filthy Critic's review of "Aeon Flux" picks it apart deftly. Hidden beneath that veneer of filth is a critic who knows his shit, even if he is fictional.
This guy who can do nothing but defend "Aeon Flux" by saying other people are to stupid to "get it" is just a moron fan-boy. His "review" is a tale, told by an idiot (him), full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. -
Riiight . . .
Those who review films for a living are notoriously unreliable, and in many cases, they miss the whole point altogether. Rest assured, even though I'm as skeptical as they come, and can find a flaw in absolutely anything, I won't pick on this movie simply because the plot may be too hard for some people to understand.
Right, those critics and "some people" (anyone who doesn't like the movie) are just too stupid to get it. Tell you what, when you're done kissing Hollywood's ass like most critics do, why don't you go to The Filthy Critic and see how a real movie review is written. He may be a bit profane, but he's honest and incisive (even if he is a fictional character) He's the only critic I trust, and I've discovered more than a few good movies due to his reviews. -

What is really sad is that you are absolutely correct.
Wait, I just swallowed my tongue... Ashton Kutcher is in the new Evil Dead movie? Say it isn't so Sam. Didn't you see the "Butterfly Effect" crapfest? Is someone from That 70's Show stroking your knob? Next you'll be telling us that Campbell won't even be making a cameo in either picture. -

unclear review selection criteriais it just me, or google seems to aggregate only the positive-thinking sites? And no honest (according to Stephen King) reviews of Filty Critic are in sight?
For instance, Crash gets two fingers (out of five) on Filthy's scale, and Google gives it four stars (out of five). Million Dollar Baby is 3 on Critic and 4.5 on Google.
There is no explanation on how movie review pool was selected. OK, it mentions that the list was "determined automatically by a computer program", but what was the reasoning behind programming the program to look in some places (i.e. rec.arts.movies.reviews) but not others.
Google really needs to increase transparency of the service before I start trusting it.

Re:The Ring
Filthy also thought The Exorcist remake was the scariest fucking movie he'd ever seen, even giving it a 4 out of 5 finger rating.
I didn't think the remake added very much to the original. It was basically the same 30 year old movie with a couple new scenes. Personally I would have given it the middle finger for wasting my time with that warmed over shit. -
City of God[Even though City of God is technically a 2002 release, I don't think it made it to the U.S. (and the rest of the world?) until 2003]
City of God (Cidade de Deus) is the frantic tale of growing up poor, surrounded by violence in a Brazillian slum during the 70s. The visually stunning story jumps through time and between characters to weave a narrative that is provactive and thought-provoking. Be warned, it IS violent; not in the "Holy shit did you see her cut off all those people's limbs???" way, but in the "*sniff* I wish I was dead because the world is a cruel, miserable, place" way.
Anyway, enough of the movie reviewer crap, I wouldn't list the movie here unless I thought it was good. It's hard to be like, "DOODE, you have to see it!" since there are certain scenes in the movie that are just painful to watch they're so sad. But, you don't have to take my word:

Missing Out
No, the boy bands aren't beginning to fail because they are created not by people who simply love music, but created to fit a specific formula to have mass appeal with lyrics that mean nothing.
Or the media singing creations like Britney and Christine are suffering a backlash and lower CD sales because their listeners are beginning to recognize them not as artists, but as glammed up beauty queens made to appeal to the most common denominator.
Movies aren't failing because they have canned stories that can be anticipated by a 5 year old, from the "Ultra-pretty female scientist who never picks up a bunson burner" to the "totally evil corporate guy that you cheer when he dies though you know it's coming the first time he does something so impossibly stupidly evil you know he wouldn't last 5 minutes in the real business world".
No, it's not because more people - not all, and in some cases, not enough - are beginning to tell their friends "Hey - you know [Insert Movie Here]? It's not that great. Yeah, don't see it." because the movie really isn't that great - it must be because they're bypassing the marketing system that is meant to polish shit and sell it as gold.
I'm really not too concerned, because in the end, "money talks and bullshit walks". The now gone Filthy Critic may have been a foul mouth bastard - but he was usually pretty spot on about calling a turd a turd, and giving praise when it was deserved. Compared to many "movie critics" who sound like paid whores (or, in the infamous Sony case, are totally made up to give bad movies a good name **cough**Freddy Got Fingered**cough**.
Word of mouth of viewers is becoming more powerful all the time. Look how low budget movies like "Bend it like Beckham" are doing better than expected thanks to word of mouth (which I actually thought was pretty good - though I can't figure out why all the ads feature the white girl Jules as the main attraction when she's not the main character).
If we're lucky, movie studios will realize that it makes more money to make a really good movie that people will want to talk about and recommend to their friends - than have sloppy, lazy writing that doesn't really entertain - it just numbs.
Eh - but that's my own take on recent movies. I could be wrong. -

Re:Silly way of crunching numbers
> (Matrix Reloaded and Return Of The King) are pure 100% plot [...]
ROTK was a little too much plot for those who hadn't read LOTR before seeing the movie (my date totally lost track of the plot within half an hour), and as for the Matrix - I remember that movie as 90 % special effects and people running around wearing sunglasses and leather coats, 5 % of inane plot about evil machines enslaving mankind and a bunch of "good" guys going up against them, and 5 % product placement (Nokia phones, anyone?). But at least the fight scenes and SFX were ok, so the Matrix wasn't a total loss to me (I utterly disliked the postmodern reek emanating from the movie. Baudrillard? Oh, please...) -
I pirate to review.
The only movie reviewer I pay any heed to is the filthy critic.
His diatribes are a little tiring after a while, but at least the reviews are honest. Sadly he doesn't review games. The best form of review for games is a pirated copy of the full version. Seriously. I only buy games that I've played pirated first (and I DO go out and buy the game if I really like it) or belong to a series that I've enjoyed before. Even then, you get the odd stink-fest (panzer general 3 and warlords 3 come to mind).
Is there a filthy critic of the game world? -
There is no global village...
I would guess, that under-appreciation varies from place to place. Some American stinkers never even make the theatres elsewhere on the planet and I guess that only a really small number of foreign films have any kind of success in America. My favourite film at the moment is Rushmore, a relatively popular film in English-speaking countries, but not even dubbed to German as far as I know. The Filthy Critic has been an invaluable guide to find Films that would otherwise not have been noticed by me and avoid others that I might have watched.
A little advice: Trust your friends recommendations. Last week I saw Bugsy Malone after a friend insisted. The description sounded horrible (basically a prohibition-era gangster musical with an all kids cast), but the film was really good.

Geeky fanboys don't give out the Oscars...
Like Filthy said, this movie wasn't as great as the geeks make it out to be. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it but it certainly wasn't the greatest movie around.
Gollum was way over the top (smells like Jar-Jar to me). There is little/no reason that really makes this worthy of an Oscar, besides just the coolness-factor of having a digital character win a major award.
For what it's worth, I am not a fan of the books. They come across as extremely juvenile, and I didn't get around to looking at them until I was in college. It was such a waste of time to read that shit. I don't care if you think they were influential/groundbreaking/important/etc. They still sucked, the technic was poor and the plots pitiful. While I'm at it, I'd like to make a point that the Oscars don't mean much anyway. It's just another excuse for these worthless celebrity shells-of-humanity to get together and congratulate each other on how utterly important they really are.
May the streets run red with Arab blood today!!! -
My first 5 daily reads.I start off on the slashdot.org front page and as I scan the articles I prioritize them based on their level of interest to me. Starting at the top of my list I then read the conversations until they degenerate to drivel or I lose interest after following a few dozen threads--links and all. It's time to move on to the next article whenever I come to the conclusion that I now know more about a subject I was casually interested in than was worth the time I afforded to learning about it. I repeat this process as many times as necessary until I run out of articles or I decide the articles at the bottom of my list aren't worth the trouble.
Unless I'm moderating I usually just skim the top with highest scores first although I regularly work my way to the first posts at the bottom. Not to join on the bandwagon but moderation has gotten terrible so I've set all the negative moderations to have a 1+ value in my preferences. This in effect negates them so an article has as fair a chance of reaching me as any other not moderated. I haven't decided that all negative moderations are evil so I also haven't come to the conclusion that any moderation is worth my attention. I'll set my preferences to 2+ if that ever happens.
I follow up slashdot with a somethingawful.com chaser to set my mind at ease and to be reassured that getting aggrevated is futile since the internet makes you stupid.
After reading the day's feature, I then check their Awful Link of the Day. Unless it belongs to a very original freak or a freak ailed by something an acquaintance suffers from, I pass. If it can't give me ammo to tease friends I always opt for my own nomination, macosrumors.com
In the rare case of an update I'll read it for laughs unless it's a processor based update. I don't have a comedy chaser ready for those instances so there's no point in winding myself up into a murderous rage.
A quick stop afterwards at maccentral.com usually satisfies the need for real Mac news although I'm thinking of solely switching to macdevcenter.com since they have Mac Central updates on a sidebar.
The subject says "5 daily reads" and for now that's macdevcenter.com which I got into by following slashdot articles. This slot is always being contested and it's a good thing I only read The Filthy Critic on Monday. --- and then I got tired of proofreading my post
