Re:"Shockingly"??
The next question is, what does REM sleep bring? It's commonly believed to be the required / most beneficial part of a person's sleep, but what specifically occurs during that period to, for example, update the type of memory you mention?
No, the most essential type of sleep is slow-wave sleep, which is even mentioned in TFA.
I've done some computational modelling of the cerebral cortex, and my hypothesis (page 7/139) is that slow-wave sleep is used to re-strengthen competitive connections between cortical columns, restoring the ability to think clearly.

First off, way to point out what Taco pointed out in his little add-on in the summary.
First off, way to miss the real information he added. Taco said nothing about a new trailer in 5 days.

There's one dishonest company that is charging people 15c/megabyte for excess usage on a 200mbyte plan. There have been people with $20k internet bills.

Re:The biggest limitation...
...with maglevs (well the current transrapids at least) is that, like all high-speed transport, they are only efficient as hub-to-hub sprinters, as they are relatively slow starters (see here). As the low friction nature of levitation is the reason for their slow launches, I would propose some electrically driven wheels on the undercarriage making contact with the flat concrete track would be able to launch them to top speed (~400km/h or 249m/h) in an unprecedented time Where did you get that idea? The Transrapid can accelerate much faster than normal trains because it is frictionless. 0 to 300 kph in just five kilometers (0 to 186 mph in 3.1 miles). -

Undercarriage wheels where actually used on some early prototypes to prop them up at rest. They may even be on the current generation IIRC.
If this was done then I think that maglev could be a transport revolution as the first high-speed urban AND interurban transport solution. It truly would be revolution! -
Re:Vista needs the space
I have no idea how you could have drawn "proprietary software" from anything I wrote. But thanks for reminding me why you're on my foes list, and why I felt no compunction in calling you a moron.
It took me all of thirty seconds to use Google to get from "grub error 25" to "25 : Disk read error - This error is returned if there is a disk read error when trying to probe or read data from a particular disk." So while it might be inconvenient to get an error code instead of an error string, that shouldn't be an insurmountable barrier. Also, it means your problem is with GRUB, not Ubuntu. There are also several possible solutions.
As for having an application tell you how to fix the cause of an error code, that's like expecting a doctor to diagnose and treat you, given no more information than "upset stomach." Should he treat you for flu? Put you on a restricted diet? Give you antibiotics to treat an ulcer? Remove a tumor? If you're programming a network application, and your attempt to open a socket returns a "network error," you wouldn't advise the user to go to the cabling closet and give a shove to the cable hooked to port 3.
There is a reason why so many of the "solutions" proposed by applications amount to "contact your system administrator." Often there isn't much more they can tell you. -
Re:Hmm..
Installing any OS is for geeks. Non-geeks use the pre-installed OS or get someone else to install for them. You can buy PCs with Ubuntu installed.
I agree the Ubuntu partition tool is not very good. However, it is a one-off problem. Do a bit of Googling and its solved, and you do not have to think about it again.
If you want to give it another try read:

and a lot more
BTW, Mandriva and Mepis are also pretty good for non-geek users. All have live-CDs you can try out. -

Good discussion on this last December
See here. To save you the time, here's a list of stuff I found from that story, games that sounded interesting or worth checking out.
First, I decided I should really get into Go. Some links from that Slashdot story: here, The Second Book of Go here, here, here, here, and here.
Other games:
Apples to Apples - got this for my cousin, they liked it.
Settlers of Catan - got this for myself, very nice game, try a local hobby shop or here or try Amazon.com
Others: Puerto Rico (Similar to Settlers of Catan), Lord of the Rings board game was mentioned, Kill Dr. Lucky, Deadwood, Give me the Brain, Lightspeed Games, Fluxx is fun, very random and quirky.
There's more! Mind Trap
Munchkin , Heroscape, Ticket to Ride, Mystery of the Abbey, Memoir '44, Queen's Necklace at Days of Wonder, Bang!, Betrayal at House on the Hill, Articulate
Killer Bunnies (and Quest for the Magic Carrot), Illuminati , Acquire .
Some other reviews/top game lists here:

Re:Death Before Social Commentary
It's funny that you say that, since that is exactly the oppposite of what Gene Roddenberry intended. He thought of Start Trek largely as a social commentary, and he added in the kick-ass Kirk character to appease NBC. The initial pilot was turned down because it was too geeky. The next pilot, which was accepted, involved Kirk kicking the ass of a superhuman character.
So here we are decades later, and all you remember is the fluff that was there to appease the masses. Your comment is insightful in that it shows how much people missed the boat on what Star Trek was about.

I am also thinking of building a system that is compatible with Survivor Shot while still supporting other options like shooter ID.
And as far as using real lasers- bad idea! Laser pointers are -not- eye safe. In fact the current crop of Class IIIa pointers are rated as a potential hazard from a -single- exposure. Even the older Class II/IIa are considered

I might consider (...) getting a console when and if they have direct output to HDTV (if they already do, please let me know
Then see games supporting 16:9 screen format and higher (HDTV) resolutions here: HDTVArcade
Basically the HDTV games are in the XBox platform, while progressive scan (480p) are also in the Cube and the PS2.
You can visually check what HDTV does to a game in this comparison. Still not a computer CRT, but quite improved compared to your old 19". -

Relax, it isn't personal. If I meant to imply that flewp was bitching and complaining I would have said so... by name.

Going... Going... Gone! To the highest bidder.
You should think about that paint sniffing if you really think the graphic chip change is the reason for the incompatibility.
Also, think about the missing hard drive while you are at it.
And the change from X86 to one of IBM's PowerPC chips... you know... the ones they won't let open source developers have documentation for.
Every move they have made fits very nicely with the desire to close the hardware and keep Linux and Open Source off the platform. And... they'll kill the baby if they have to do it to get what they want. -
Re:Hollywood declares war on a classicI wish these guys would hurry up!!!

Dammit, I want the future as advertized, not what we ended up buying!

Re:ExperimentThe weapon is the General Electric GAU 8/A Avenger. It had a selectable ROF (rate of fire) of 2100 or 4200 RPM (rounds per minute) but they eliminated the 4200 RPM rate as, as you point out, you would blow off your ammo in fifteen seconds. Of course at 2100 RPM it still only takes 30 seconds
:) The "wasted" rounds during spin-up are still fired, just not as close together. The GAU-8 was usually loaded with a mixture of DPU and lead, the DPU was to crack armor and the lead is cheaper. They have also outfitted it with HEAP (high explosive armor piercing) ammunition, which would get very expensive very rapidly, but is a pretty wild way to spend money anyway. 30mm HEAP weaponry is actually overkill given that the A-10 can already saw a tank in half with its primary armament.
-
Re:The name says it all
General Electric GAU-8/A "Avenger" is the primary armament of the Fairchild Republic YA-10A "Thunderbolt II". It is a 30mm cannon which (according to some guy) fires 2100 rounds per minute, for 35 rounds per second. Compare this to the FAMAS bullpup assault rifle, which has a fairly high rate of fire, at 1100 rounds per minute (a little over 18 per second.) That same page asserts that it used to have a mode in which it fired 4200 rounds per minute (70/second) but that they discontinued that mode, probably since you'd run out of ammo in about 15 seconds of firing that way. The GAU-8 is one of the meanest guns around, it tears tanks in half... good stuff, if you're the one behind the trigger anyway. Otherwise you're not going to be having much fun

I don't understand their QA processOn 2003-06-01 I submitted a bug report (see my mirror if bugzilla doesn't let you follow a link from slashdot). I read the bug reporting guidelines and did all the right things. I created a stripped-down test case and attached it, adding the keyword "testcase". I set the Severity to Major since I think it's somewhat serious (see for yourself). The bug got confirmed by a QA person... and then ignored. There have been several releases since then (final, non-beta releases), and my bug has remained.
What I'd like to know is: why are releases made with known Major bugs, and what does it take for a bug to get seen to and not sit in Bugzilla, ignored? It has certainly made me feel that there is little point in reporting any further bugs. Could someone explain Mozilla's QA process to me?

Re:Question -
I do understand how the legal system works - if it wasn't for the DMCA, modchips would be legal, based on the argument I listed above, it's that simple. Look at Australia - they are legal there, just do a search on goole for the ruling this last July. Microsoft obviously can't stop them there. They are legal based on the region coding argument, Australia courts found mochips to be legal because they allow people to purchase games and movies from other countries and use them.

Re:Not Likely
Actually tech support seems to have no problem with me connecting to big pond advance (the cable service) with my linux firewall/gateway using the bpalogin program.
There is a page with instructions hosted on telstra http://users.bigpond.net.au/LinuxRouter/bpalogin.h tml
And the bpalogin homepage is http://bpalogin.sourceforge.net/
Funny way to ban linux if you ask me :)
Sure I wouldnt be expecting any real tech support, but my linux box never crashes or disconnects (excepting telstra problems) and if you are running linux I would assume you have a modicum technical expertise.

In other words, what would it have been like if some of the ideas in that article in Collier's that included Bonestell's art had actually been carried out? It's an interesting project, and follow the gallery link to view the trailer (in mpeg format). Kind of neat to see it brought to life this way.

How about the Broken Allegiance movie?
After seeing both trailers..
I don't know why, but I was more excited about the new Star Wars Broken Allegiance movie than the Star Wars Episode 2 movie.
Perhaps because the scenes presented in the BA trailer were more orientated towards the 'traditional' star wars views and themes.
Ok, and the female Sith apprentice is cool.

you think you've got it bad?
I live in Australia, and have cable access here.
There is only ONE cable provider in the capital city of South Australia, Tel$tra.
They charge the equivelent of US$50/month, in return for which we get 3000 million bytes.
(As opposed to 3 GB, which would be more.)
This isn't just downloads metered, but uploads as well! So, all the backchannel acks from your http/ftp sessions are counting towards your total.
You can download at around 660 KByte/sec, so you can hit the limit very quickly. After exceeding it, excess bandwidth is charged at the equivelent of about US$0.40 per megabyte.
I just thought i'd let you know how things are on this side of the lake.. It could be worse. -
Cable and DSL on the East coast is sky-high!I just moved from South San Francisco, CA to Westerly, RI. I was paying $99.00/mo. for 144k SDSL in SSF (there was literally nothing else available other than dialup, and with that copper, no way I'd get more than 14.4k).
I moved to Westerly, and Cable here is $109.00/mo. for 256/256, 1 static, on an independant segment (no shared bandwidth with the "neighbors"). When I moved in two weeks ago, cable was all there was.
10 minutes ago, I called and found out DSL was just made available, and I'm 3,200 feet from the CO! They want $119.00/mo. for 128k SDSL, $139.00/mo. for 256k SDSL, and $399.00/mo. for 1.0M SDSL, all through "Choice One Communications".
It's a complete rape job out here. Save me. A full T1 to the house (minus CSU/DSU and router) is $512.00/mo. I'm thinking about getting one, slapping up a helical 7802.11 antenna and selling wireless to the neighbors at $50.00/mo.
-
Other tests
You can find other 802.11b antenna experiments in Finland and in Belgium with HomeMade antennas (this is in french, sorry). The 'KoekelBerg2 experiments' show the signal strength for a 3.9 km link with home made helicals and tin cans. We also got -85/-98 dBm with a can on a side and a simple lambda/4 wire on the other (the measure is on this side). We don't know if the apparent better performance of tin cans over helical antennas (which are much more difficult to build) is due to some error in our helical design (based on Jason Hecker's design) or not. I've got some other links here And, just a note about dB's : adding 6 dB allows you to double the distance.

Renewable energy
I compiled a summary of some of the info I found on renewable energy sources recently. Got some interesting data on the cost of various means of producing power. Photovoltaics seem to be one of the more expensive renewable resources, but still justifiable on cost grounds alone in a lot of situations, especially where grid power is expensive or not available.

what about the 286 bug that made M$ the OS for PCs
from a larger article written after the pentium floating point 'problems'
...Most people screaming about the Pentium flaw don't realize that it was incredibly serious flaws in the 80286 processor that cemented DOS as the OS for PC's. Bugs in the 286's protect mode resulted I believe in DRI being finally taken off the scene as a serious OS vendor. They had gambled on being the protect mode OS for PCs, but alas the 286 couldn't run it. Many people have written about a magic plane flight the decided that DOS would be the OS for PCs. I think instead it was a group of Intel engineers that made DOS the OS for PCs. After the fiasco with the 286, Intel did much better with the 386.... -
Finally... a story where this is *not* offtopic...and I'm asleep at the keyboard. Doh!
Oh well... here it is.

Time for Slashdot to take a stand...
The following is a list of all the mirrors from the 2600 site.
Slashdot has long been one of the best true forums for free speech in the world. Link to this comment. Post that link on your website and everywhere. CmdrTaco archives these comments indefinitely, right? Lets see the MPAA take on Slashdot, Andover, and the ACLU (who I'm assuming would back you guys up) BTW: When I click the "Post Anonymously" button, is there any way to retrieve my IP address, or my login info? I sure as hell hope not. Big risk I'm taking here for the sake of free speech... but we gotta do what we gotta do. Right?

Right?

Re:Banning spammers ?And that's what makes the whole thing so laughable. Even if they REQUIRED isp's to block porn, a simple variation of ROT-13 (how about binary: 1=0 and 0=1) on your internet feed would be enough to completely dissolve any 'blocks' available.
But effective blocking is so laughably impossible, and so laughably ILLEGAL, no ISP would even bother spending the hundreds of thousands of dollars getting filtering routers.

We have one cable internet provider in Australia and it sucks.
