Re:disallowed?!?Seems like a pretty good corroboration of the actions they are alleged to have done
Because they aren't alleged accusations. Microsoft has already been found guilty of monopolistic practices. It is the settlement that is the issue. I think everyone is tired of hearing about what a big bad company MS is, I know I am. It is accepted fact.
Now I just hope they punish them into the stone-age for it.

Another place to look...
is http://docs.rinet.ru:8080/ - I ran across this site a few years back. It almost looks like an online library for a Russian ISP's technical support staff.
They've got lots and lots of official books, all HTMLized a chapter or a section at a time. They're all a bit old or out of date, too - I know of one Perl book in particular that they have there was one edition behind what was being sold on the shelf at the time I saw it.

Re:Nitpick...
And of course, there's always Apple's Newton series, which was doing this four years ago...
I'd like to know if this new input area can have specific apps placed in it, like on my Newt - I took out a few of their apps that I'd never used, and placed my dialup/telnet app and docking app in their place. I'd also like to see a picture of this new Clie, but the image on the site seems to be busted.

Re:I just bought one of these last week.
One of the things I first did when I got the Tivo was to turn off the suggestions. I knew that any additional shows I got addicted to would tax my schedule tremendously.
It didn't really help...
I even made t-shirts that describe how I feel about the infernal machine... -
Re:Fast forward correction
Single fast forward (3x, I think it is) has no jumpback correction. I think there's a way to change the jumpback level, but you'll want to check it at tivocommunity.com

Ah, to be a single geek...
To be able to actually *use* one of these things; to have the time to sit through a 12 hour marathon of Farscape or B5 without having the kids crawling all over you... I'd really like a Tivo-type thingy, but I have no idea when I'd be able to actually use it. I barely get to use the dvd player we got for Christmas...

It doesn't stop at the software, folks.Oh yes, there's more. Much more.
RadLight offers you and your family a whole line of fine merchandise at the RadLight Online Store . If you've ever felt like you've had too much voluntary control over your daily routine, why not try integrating some of their fine products into your lifestyle?
Take, for instance, this fashionable long-sleeve RadLight t-shirt . It's luxuriously soft, 100% cotton -- and it forcibly ejects from your wardrobe any third-party sweaters, jackets, etc. you might mistakenly slip over it on one of those chilly summer nights. No more hassles choosing what to wear, and think of all the closet space you'll free up.
Or how about this bright and cheery RadLight mug ? Guaranteed to keep your favorite beverage piping hot... as long that beverage is RadLight-branded Maxwell House Regular Roast. All other liquids will be drained through an emergency discharge valve at the bottom of the mug. (Please note: by filling the cup, the consumer absolves RadLight of all liability for any leg/groin/other scalding that may occur.)
And, of course, there's always RadLight's crowing achievement: extra-roomy RadLight boxer shorts . All-cotton, open-fly, and completely impervious to access by any third parties. That's right, only you or an authorized RadLight employee (or an employee/consultant of any of its licensed subsidiaries and partners) will be able to get at what's behind that RadLight logo. Now how's that for peace of mind?
Don't thank them now. That slightly pained smile on your face will be praise enough.

Code Red annoying, at the least...
I'm building a web server where I work, and I've been having trouble with some of the code... I keep "tail -f error.log" active, and I see lots of code red hits on this server daily, mostly from overseas machines... and it's not even a publicly known server, it's just a dev box.
Being a Mac user at home, I haven't had to care about Code Red, but I find it's presence in the world, and it's attempts to access unknown, non-Win machines (especially ones that I'm working on) very disturbing. As I understand it, the hits I get are nothing compared to some servers, so I can only imagine the amount of bandwidth wasted on Code Red and it's kin.
Had more people actually heeded the legitimate virus warnings of the past, this problem might not exist. Hyping the pointless crap got us to this point, and I don't see what's going to fix it in the short term.

But they actually are selling abstinence shorts. If you were a hoaxer, would YOU sell abstinence shorts?
-
Re:It's a hoaxMy favorite is in their online shopping area, where they sell 'Zounds Abstinence [Boxer] Shorts':
These boxer shorts feature the Zounds Youth Rock Ministry logo with the inspirational words "Radically Abstinent, Saved & Saving it!" A great way to show the youths that abstinence is "where its at".
Like, hey, check out my abstinence boxers. I'll just take off my pants to show you...

Re:Use the AOL strategyI would have to completly disagree with you. The reason people use windows is because they have always used windows. The only reason people don't use linux is because 1. They already have windows. 2. They don't know how to install linux (those people can't install Windows either). or 3. They don't even know it exists.
Linux (ok I am really talking about an installed system running KDE or GNOME) is not hard to use for the point and click user. Its surly not any harder then windows. And they are less likly to get one of those pesky BSOD's (or a crash like equivilent). In order for people to start using Linux it has to be used in Schools (High Schools, and secondary), OEM's need to offer it as the default OS (A Majority), And businesses need to use it as thier Desktop of choice.
Short: People can't use linux because they never have!

So what's the hubbub?
This movie is a spin-off of The (Brendan Frasier) Mummy movies, which were an astounding bit of escapism, broken plot lines, unreality, fantasy, and general making-stuff-up-as-you-go-along-ishness... and Rocky was in the Returns movie anyway. I don't recall either of those movies trying too hard to be classics of American cinema. So what's the problem with this one being more of the same?

Ooh, SimEarth...
I managed to get Mars terraformed in SimEarth within 50 years... wonder how quick it'll be able to happen in real life, since there aren't many ice meteors floating around for us to grab...
Then again, it doesn't have to be done all at once. Scientists can start by just terraforming one chunk of Mars, and then build out from there. It would make sense to start near one of the poles, where there's a large concentration of ice; that would definitely make things easier at the start.

Re:Even if...
Very good point. I know the NOC I used to work at that supported AOL still used older AOL clients (as far back as ver.3) for dialup testing, because the customers were still using them. Some people will not change just for the sake of changing, especially if it's computer stuff they've gotten used to.
There's also the fact that this would mean AOL customers downloading a new browser and configuring it. As I understand it, Mozilla isn't exactly something you'd want to grab and go from a dialup connection... don't forget copying those bookmarks! I *still* blow away my bookmarks on occasion... good thing I always keep a backup :)

Perhaps this is why
Perhaps this is why games with big budgets become more successful than indie games that can't afford to buy their way into the review rags despite how good/bad they are.
For example, one could argue that Q3A was just another Quake, but it got all kinds of press. Kohan, though, was a great game, but very few people have ever heard of it.
Also, there are several great open source games (Crystal Space, FreeCiv, BlueMango, FlightGear, Frozen Bubble, etc.) that are really good. Of course, since they're open source and can't afford to send out "press kits" to magazines and reviewers, they never get reviewed, and never get seen outside of a very small niche.

Go Gateway!
As a die-hard Apple user, I've always said that if I *had* to get a Win box, it'd be a Gateway, even if they do have a spokescow now.
They seemed to use decent components, and their products felt like they had a personality, like they weren't just another mass-produced consumer computer. The cow spots added a touch of irreverance that made them feel like less of a corporate tool.
This just increases their chances of getting my business when that dreaded someday comes :)

I put these up on my cafepress store, at no profit to myself. I put them at the bottom cost that cafepress charges, so I don't get any commission! http://www.cafepress.com/grubbylaws or you can get there from my Tshirt website Poundingsand.com , and I have other "freedom" type tees as well.

Please Disprove This Conspiracy TheoryWhen working for Disinformation last year, I conceptualized and had manufactured "THE CIA TRAFFICS DRUGS" t-shirts which are still sold at the Disinfo store. On the back of the shirt is a bibliography. When I was constructing this bibliography, I gathered ISBN and LC (library of congress) call numbers for all of the titles.
Here is the spooky part:
There was one title (Cockburn, Leslie. Out of Control: The Story of the Reagan Administration's Secret War in Nicaragua, the Illegal Arms Pipeline, and the Contra Drug Connection. New York: Atlantic Monthly Press, 1987) cited here, which I could find very little proof of ever existing. All the retail sites provided no records. The Library of Congress gave me no results. Other than the link I placed above, it is very difficult to prove this book was ever printed.
The only proof I could find was at eBay of all places. I have a hard copy of the book, which I bought for $3.95. The book does indeed have an ISBN number and Library of Congress call number.
Is there any possible reason for the lack of records regarding the publication of this book other than cover-up, censorship, book-banning, and historical whitewashing?
Please disprove this conspiracy theory.

Re:Webcomics business??
I am the sysadmin and part-time artist for Friend Bear and I agree that there is not much to profit from with the webcomic world. We run our site with unrestricted free access to our content, on our DSL connection in the basement here in Edmonton. Our DSL is on a static IP, we pay for "business-grade" DSL at our house to keep our provider from blocking our port 80 outgoing packets and unfortunately our domain name is registered through Verisign (although I'm working on getting it transferred). We have few expenses. The DSL costs us about $48 CAD a month, although I would be using it anyway if we weren't running the site here so it's not exactly a "true" expense. The domain name is $29 USD a year. We don't have a problem with bandwidth since the strip isn't huge (not everyone can dig surrealist, MS Paint-drawn crudely sketched strips), but there is a problem: We get told all the time about how we should be selling merchandise and/or accepting donations. I have nothing against a donation based system or selling merchandise - the problem is getting merchandise put together. We have a cafepress link up but it doesn't generate much revenue because CafePress is too expensive, especially to the majority of people who read our strip (Canadians, since our marketing is word-of-mouth only and I'm Canadian). I can't convince people a Friend Bear t-shirt is worth over $30 Canadian. I don't think it is. *grin* Anyway - we have been told by many that we need to make a compilation of our strips in book form and get it published, but I haven't got much of a clue how much money it would cost to start this initiative, or where I'd go about doing it. Does anyone have any suggestions? It's funny because I actually work at a publishing company as a graphics artist/page layout guy, but they probably wouldn't go for putting something like Friend Bear out. It would have a limited distribution and would not make a lot of money. I don't really want advertising on our site, and I don't want the strip to be a big capitalist sell-out, but I would love a way to make enough money for Friend Bear to be my day-job and thus have enough time to put new strips up -all the time-. I have no idea where to start, though. Does anyone?
