Re:So...
...are most cops that get injured in the line of duty attacked by people under the age of 18?
No, but this one was in the town I work. Sure, it is purely the responsibility of parents to regulate what their kids are playing/watching, but what parent can watch their kids 24/7?
I'm not trying to flamebait, but really, the good parents actions are negated by the parents who let their kids run around the streets all night and do whatever the hell they want...and someone needs to have some sort of regulation on what they can do, no?
I understand your point, but not everybody (the last time I checked) is the 'perfect' parent.

Recording wind sound on Mars
This isn't the first time NASA have had this idea -- they have tried to record actual sounds on Mars from wind blowing (and this wasn't supposed to be a simulation of the sound, like these effects are). However, the space craft with this equipment was unfortunately the Mars Polar Lander which crashed due to the infamous metric conversion mistake.

Re:Cartoon Villain
Which means Eric Raymond is actually the guy who does "Cow and Chicken" on Cartoon Network , who is in turn actually a columnist for the Winnipeg Sun. Could it be that a rogue band of Canadian Solaris programmers are behind these writings as a way to cash in on their cartoon royalties? Only time will tell.

Re:canada anybody?
LOL. Ah yes, Canada, home of free speech and equal opportunity. Is this the same Canada who's Government got in a huge hissy fit over Conan O'Brien [msn.com]? (And they complain about the FCC) Or is it the same Canada that bans America's #1 Cable Network [canoe.ca] because the Government disagrees with it's coverage, while allowing Al-Jazeera to broadcast freely.

Lame
These guys used to be cool back when I was in grade school. It is pretty lame that they have to make terrible songs that are anti-Bush just to sell an album. What ever happened to selling albums because the music is good?
Here's a choice quote plus the link (I almost got sick reading it; they sound like quasi-hippies to me):
"Since then, however, these clown princes of hip-hop have grown from B-Boys to men who rock the mic for social change, using their lyrics to decry a host of societal and political ills."
Completely off topic, but also very funny:
Anyway, sorry for the rant...21.5 hours of broken windows installations on the weekend will do that to you... -
not exactly the case with this
from other articles on the subject, the person initiating the conference is the one who pays, not the other participants.

Let me guess...
Were they driving the wrong way down a one-way street naked from the waist down and surfing for child porn on a hacked wireless connection? If not they should talk to this man.

"Free" as in "without worth""One person's spam is another's free speach."
When every one of Earth's 6.4 billion inhabitants get on the net and decide they want their one free speech per user, we'll have approximately 40,960,000,000 messages to get through.
To make the sums as fair as possible, let's consider the most long-lived humans (the Okinawan's) as typical recipients; on average they live a smidge under 80 years (2,522,880,000 seconds).
So that's
- 40,960,000,000 messages in
- 2,522,880,000 seconds, which means only
- 0.06159375 seconds can be allotted per message (assuming the reader doesn't eat, sleep, or need a job to pay for the computer and net access).
QED: Free speech is worthless unless a similar right exists for selective listening.

Nokia: Designed by crack-smoking monkeys
Damn right. The 8xxx series were the last decent phones Nokia made. I gave up and switched to a Sony Ericsson t68i, because I needed triple band and the Nokia 8890 was way too expensive.
I don't know what Nokia's industrial designers have been smoking recently. Stupid circular keypads, stupid slanting keypads, eight symbols on every button, an even dumber circular keypad, keys designed so you can't tell where to push, and what the hell is that? I don't want to make a statement, I want to make phone calls.
To make things worse, even today they still only have one small normal phone with Bluetooth, according to their web site. It's a camera phone, but at least it doesn't have swiveling keyboards, circular keyboards, or a big 80s style shape like all their other Bluetooth phones.
No wonder they're seeing a huge drop in sales. It just staggers me that the CEO can't see what the problem is. -

Re:The future, Conan?
I think he understood my joke. He was merely adding to what I said that a PC could do with tangible examples of each. Then he went on to voice a preference to having each device separate.
Personally, I too would like each device to remain separate and thus optimized at its task. My post wasn't so much a jab at that all the functionality could be replaced by a PC, but rather that eventually we'll probably actually SEE someone tout this all-in-one component as the killer app of Home Theater.
Some guy got thrown in jail for taking pictures of his teenage girlfriend with a cell phone camera and posting them on the Internet. His probation will prohibit him from using a cell phone at all. Since when were cameras an integral part of cell phones? :)
You get my drift... my jab at all-in-oneness was basically to wonder what the situation would look like when we merge into one device components that were all spawned from one device. -
Re:How do you tell...
The CBC is a good start. Lots of good material on their website, and a decent Canadian-centric alternative to the BBC for reasonably responsible news. Specifically, check out their Archives; tons of historical and modern TV articles, most with video footage for download.
There's also Canoe and canada.com (which I don't particularly like, so won't make a live link to).

Re:DMC-Wha?
Oh ya, so that explains this picture of our current heritage minister then?
I think the source article was originally posted on slashdot a while back.
I suspect that after the next federal electrion, fair use will get its ass kicked just as badly here as in the States. The only glimmer of hope is that the Canadian public is more wired than the US and might actually care enough to stop that from happening. -

Re:The DMCA is a BAD law.
I'll just keep my figners crossed that we dont "import" this or a similar law to Canada.
Please, I beg you, do more than that! After that Federal Court of Canada ruling (that file/music sharing is legal within Canadian copyright law) the Heritage Minister changed her tune all of a sudden... gee I wonder why? A stroke of pity for the CRIA, no doubt. What happened in the US and EU is slowly happening here in Canada too. Let's fight it, because really these government measures are meant to give the industry what it wants without concern for citizens' rights, or desires.
Please, Canadians, take note: our copyright laws are about to get fscked up by the powerful industry lobbies. You can voice your opposition; start by getting involved here, join our forum. We're working on a Petition For Users's Rights to impress upon the government that Canadian Copyright law is fine as it is. We're starting to contact media outlets and get our press release out. We need more volunteers. -
Re:I don't get it.
This is pretty off topic I admit, but it's another local story that is definitely YRO. I just thought I'd share it.
The seeds of hate Racists' move into Manitoba alarms activists -
Re:I don't get it.
I'm a Manitoban. Yes they absolutely want to waste taxpayer's money. Our current provincial government is what you would call extremely populist. They've been doing all kinds of whacky things like "reforming" labour laws. You'd really have to live here to understand just how nuts these guys are. Check out the fantastic back-patting on their web page.
They even have the intestinal fortitude to put on there "Balanced Budgets and Lower Taxes". The reality of the situation is that the Conservative party that they took over from, balanced the budget for many years in a row after cleaning up the mess left over from these yahoo's. Then passed legislation saying that if the government did run a deficit there would be all kinds of salary implications for the mucky mucks.
They just released their latest budget, raising many taxes. The NDP had now run a defecit 3 years in a row. You'd be VERY hard pressed to find anyone outside of NDP caucus who can call this a surplus budget. In fact there are many examples of news stories condemning their accounting.
Manitoba auditor: Budget contains deficit
Manitoba set to bring down 'realistic' provincial budget
Manitoba increases taxes
I could go on, but I think I'm about to explode with rage. -

Re:747-400F
And all that says it that "It is widely believed that El Al airliners are equipped with missile defense systems,"
However, the Flight Guard defense system being installed by El Al is not a laser, but rather a radar detection unit and an automated flare dispenser. Effective against MANPAD IR guided SAM's. Stingers and Strelas, for instance.
There is no civilian mounted laser defense system. yet. The missiles fired in Kenya missed, just because they missed, not because they were targeted by a laser. -

Re:The smell of cancer
I hope they continue to delve into the olefactory sences as well. They found out that some dogs can smell melanoma. Combine that with sound technology and we can get the lousy HMO check up process out of the way. "Hey doc, whats with this mole on my boob?" "Its a third nipple." "No shit, are you sure it's not cancer" "Of course I'm sure, I'm a doctor!"

Re:Constitutional rights?
There are already enough weird laws on the books to do that. In one way or another, whether you know it or now, we're all criminals under some law in some way.
Did you know, for example, that cohabitation is illegal in North Carolina?
The land of the free indeed... as long as you don't offend anybody making more money than you and do nothing against the religion of the ruling party (think there are two? check again).

Re:The question I haven't seen them address
Quebec did such a shitty job controlling their electric grid in the early 90s (remember those ice storms?) that the governments made them install Phase Angle Regulators and DC ties at the edges of their system, and forced them to be self-sufficient generation-wise. Just do a search on HVDC and you'll see how much they use it.
What "DC ties" are is take the AC frequency/voltage and converts it to DC, and back to AC on the other side, which essentially isolates either side of the grid from frequency disturbances. It was we didn't want their problems affecting our frequency. Well, sure enough, when we had problems, they were isolated, and weren't dragged down by the surge. Once the middle of ohio dropped, it created a path that basically went Cleveland-Michigan-SouthCanada-Niagra-NYCity-NewJe rsey-PA-SouthernOhio... so all that energy routed itself right through eastern NY / north NJ, which immed. tripped New Jersey, islanding NY. NY can't support all that load by itself, so it dropped, followed by everything west in the loop. Oops. -
Vote her out of office?I recall this part of America was still a democracy last time I checked... and while the "geek vote" alone may not make a difference, educating the public about the harm that over-zealous copyright protection has already done (on either side of the pond) certainly will.
BTW SaveCanadianLiberties.com (and friends) aren't taken yet AFAICS...

Re:WTF????It'll depend on how higher courts interpret the case. Technically, there's no difference between running p2p software with a shared directory of music, and a website with the same. (In fact most p2p software uses modified HTTP code.) I think the recent photocopier case that got a 9-0 verdict from the supreme court focused the wrong analogy in this judge's thinking and he went too far.
Can I now "file-share" any commercial software as well? (Yes, music is a different deal, but Justice von Finckenstein's ruling doesn't seem to note that.)
It sure was a laugh to watch the record companies try to roll over the ISPs and court in US DMCA style, and get far far more than they barganed for.

Finland has a way
Fines don't hurt enough? Finland doesn't have this problem because, for example, a traffic fine is based on ability to pay--the offender's income. That's how Anssi Vanjoki got a $103,000 speeding ticket.

Re:Actually, the ruling means a bit more
That was really strange.
I read the canoe article you mentioned in your posting at 2:46pm, and it quoted from slashdot postings from danhm and _Sharp'r_, both submitted at 2:43pm.
3 minutes for canoe to read those postings, write their article, for you to find their article, read it, and write your posting.
I knew the news loop was faster on the Internet, but that's pretty amazing!
I wish news sites would show the revision history of published articles.

Re:Canadians Are Evil
Don't you mean Canuckistan?
-
Re:Canadians Are EvilYeah, it proves the electorate doesn't give a damn about provincial finances until its too late. I'm a Manitoban, who saw us go from years of surpluses under the Tories back into a defecit under the NDP in just one term. They also were kind enough to reform the labour laws so that to form a union in a workplace, you need 30% support for it, and it takes 75% to support removal of the union. How nice and democratic. I sure hope the conservatives get their act together for the next election, that last one was a cake walk for Doer and his goofy policies. Just now I went looking for a link, and whats the top story on news.google.ca?
Ontario is practically begging us to build a new mega project hydro dam at Wuskwatim, and these goofy NPDers are hesitant. We've got Ontario, and US State governors making trips here offering money to help build the thing. They're worried about the expenditure. These freaks need to go. -

Another article
This article is on Canoe. Same story, different info, and much more thorough I think.
There's a great quote from the Judge as well, "I cannot see a real difference between a library that places a photocopy machine in a room full of copyrighted material and a computer user that places a personal copy on a shared directory linked to a P2P service." -
Re:Favourite qoute from a similar article
This analogy is a direct comparision with another case just a few weeks ago where Law Society of Upper Canada, the governing body for Ontario lawyers, had a photocopier in their library...
-
Favourite qoute from a similar article
In a related article from canoe.ca , the judge was qoute as saying,"I cannot see a real difference between a library that places a photocopy machine in a room full of copyrighted material and a computer user that places a personal copy on a shared directory linked to a P2P service,"
Doesn't this analogy actually make more sense, than alot of the analogies to "theft" that the record industry has thrown out?
On the other hand, it may not be that valid, because to actually photocopy an entire book would be prohibatively expensive. Where as with P2P whether you download an entire album or just one song its the same cost. Free. -
Judge: File swapping not illegal
The Canadian Press version of the story really slaps it to the record industry. Quite a different focus to it. Have to read all ofthem and boil them down to get the real facts.
