Re:Great movie with free market touches
Actually, Universal owns the rights to Firefly. Universal also owns SciFi Channel. So, to sum up:
1)Own SciFi Channel
2)Buy the rights to Firefly
3)???
4)Fans PROFIT!!
However, also in the link, it seems that Joss Whedon doesn't feel like he needs to continue the TV series (which is a giant shame, isn't it?). -

800 not 88
The original "scoop" (if you follow the trail of citations) at http://www.cinescape.com/0/editorial.asp?aff_id=0
& this_cat=Movies&action=page&type_id=&cat_id=270338 &obj_id=48836 has the new prequel 800 years before Phantom Menace, not 88. This gets misquoted and the error propagates, as everyone quotes earlier bloggers, rather than looking it up for themselves. -
All based on rumorAll this prequel business is based on a very flimsy rumor, anyway. Here is the story according to the original source:
"Another scooper, MK, wrote in with his story of meeting none other than George Lucas, while in Hawaii on his (MK's) honeymoon. MK had this to say about his chance encounter with the Master:
I was vacationing at the Mandarin Oriental in Hawaii for my honeymoon in 2004. I ran into George Lucas and his family on the beach there. I was sitting in a hammock, just about to get up, and he asked me if I was done. I said yes and began to leave....
He said so "Where are you from" ... I said I was from NY. He said "Are you here for the shoot?" I said no, "Here on my honeymoon."
I told him I was a big STAR WARS fan and was anxiously awaiting the conclusion of the most recent trilogy.
I asked him if STAR WARS was going to end with this next installment and.
He said, "'Star Wars' will never end. My involvement may, but the story will go on...."
I said what do you think would be more interesting.... telling a story prior to PHANTOM MENANCE or after RETURN OF THE JEDI?
(Lucas) said, no question about it, prior to PHANTOM MENACE. He said, that if he did ever do another storyline.... that he would do when the Jedi regained control of the universe from the Dark Lords (there were many of them) 800 years before PHANTOM MENACE. And a young Jedi named Yoda was instrumental in the effort.
None of these stories are (or can truly be) confirmed at this moment, so only time will tell.
For all we know, maybe this will be the premise for the TV show that Lucas was talking about more recently. -

That can be arranged. Just get yourself a set of these.

Re:Larry Niven's Known Space
According to Cinescape, Ringworld is being turned into a Sci-Fi Channel mini-seriies. Time will tell if it makes the cut...
-
Old news...They've been showing previews for it since the Stargate SG1/Atlantis season premier weekend... and pretty much every other hour of the day... can't miss it.
Also of note:
Farscape is coming back as Farscape: Peacekeeper Wars. Old News.
New series based on Ursula K LeGuin's EarthSea coming in December. Old News.
Firefly is coming back in movie form as Serenity next summer. Old News.
SciFi channel is also contemplating a Larry Niven Ringworld miniseries. Old News.
And most likely, there's going to be another 8 or so Tremors spinoffs...

Re:What happened to the Rama movie? It's still in development, although it's looking like they'll "reinvent" the book:
Rendezvous with Rama movieThat's an Arthur C. Clarke book though, not Larry Niven.

Re:How long can he wait?
I just hope Ian Mckellar is still around to play gandalf when the time comes.
Doesn't matter. They can just get Mary Alice to replace him, and then throw in some jive bullshit about why he looks different and how "there was a cost".
Then again, judging from the senselessness of some of Jackson's alterations from the books, we can probably expect Tom Bombadil to show up in this one. -
Great news!
This is great news, indeed!!!
Not so long ago I read that Seth was also about to do a direct-to-DVD Family Guy movie. Perhaps FOX changed their minds and wanted whole season instead?
Seth's previous comments from an interview:
"It's all come down to the budget right now. We're hashing it out [...] It would be a direct-to-DVD project."
But wait, there's more. This might still be on the rumor stage, but something about FOX having Seth create another series. Do a Google search! In short:
This series focuses on a family consisting of Stan, a right-leaning C.I.A. agent; his wife; their two kids, including a liberal daughter; a housebound alien named Roger; and a French-speaking goldfish. Like "Family Guy," MacFarlane plans to provide several of the character voices.
It sounds weird, I know.

Re:Slashdot "news"
Yep, very old news. Even the interview linked up there doesn't reference the project that much. Both CGChannel and 3DVF ran interview with Chiang about it:
Interview with Doug Chiang
Interview de Doug Chiang (this one is back from November 2002)Alos Sparx, the French studio who made the trailer is looking for financing to turn this into an animated feature:

I disagree.
The extra content, in this case anyway, might well be worth the investment in the DVD.
This seems like a pretty half-assed DVD to me. We all know the term "Special Edition" has no meaning anymore, but it's pretty obvious they've rushed this out to coincide with the release of Revolutions.
Take a good look at those "bonus features." It's a few featurettes, the kind of vapid press release crap you see on HBO before the movie's released. No commentary. No deleted scenes. Why do they need a second disc for this?
There's already talk of a genuine special edition (scroll to the bottom of the article), after the Wachowskis are done with the Revolutions hoopla. If you're not willing to buy a movie twice, you're going to be kicking yourself later. -
But what about the movie?
There were plans to make a Tron 2.0 move also. Unfortunately, there hasnt been any news about it in over a year. So, either it got scrapped, or theyre really keeping it quiet somehow.

Stephen King, not dead, but retiring(?!)
More infohere.
LinuxWorld, eh? Each year more and more people have I.D. that says 'Steve Jobs, Apple Inc.' or 'Osama bin Laden, Terrorist'. It's getting annoying. Use your real names. Please stop selling stupid shit there, too. Sell good shit, and invite many BSD girls. -
Universal Just Passed on it.
It looks like Universal would rather deal with the Incredible Hulk than the Terminator.
-
This is seriously old news...
Readers of movie fan sites have known about this for a year and a half. See this link from Cinescape.

Same guys as EFC?Great, are these the same guys calling the shots with Earth Final Conflict? Every season got worse because they kept of 'fixing' the show. Andromeda isn't broke so DON'T FIX IT. They'll keep the strong ratings by keeping the viewers they earned the first season. The first season was great, the second so far even better. Hope they come to their sences.

Re:any word on who is replacing Aliyah?
Agreed.
I read somewhere (Cinescape, maybe? Before they screwed the format up...) that they're not sure what to do with Aaliyah's character. Quuen of the Damned, however, is supposed to be ~90% complete.
Dagnabbit. Now I'm sad again. -
Both of these articles are correct
Kenny Baker will be in Ep2, but then again so will a CGI R2D2. Kenny Baker has been quoted as saying "Of course I am disappointed. I missed the chance to go to Australia with the cast. I'm not in the movie to the extent I was expecting and no one has really explained to me why... George Lucas always told me that R2D2 really came alive when I was inside him. If they don't use human beings these movies are in danger of looking like Disney cartoons... The progress in digital and computer technology has been frightening. It was light years on from when I was in the first Star Wars movie." (from Cinescape). He will be in it, but not as much as in Ep1, and certainly not as much as in the Original Trilogy.

Re:Don't believe it!
Cinescape update
I'd post the original story from yesterday, but Cinescape's redirects and frames make linking to a particular article a real bitch. -
The Rumors Are False
Forget "Sources close to...". How about news right from the horse's (Rick Berman) mouth?
In the last issue (Vol 6, no. 3) issue of Cinescape, there was an article about the future of the Trek franchise in which Rick Berman states that all three of the rumors mentioned on the mentioned web page are false.
- Starfleet Acadamy
- Mission Impossible (aka special ops)
...and...- Early days of the Federation
I don't know if the Cinescape web page mentions any of this, but you can check it here.
That's my $0.02.

watch it do half decently, and then paramount go and copy it.

Alec Newman
This guy looks like a spaghetti western character. Could be a real star in the making. He's got the Clint Eastwook stare down pat.

- A play "Plenty" with Alec Newman

Re:Not from what I hear
This is almost exactly what cinescape.com is reporting.
And why the hostility? He said Fox is quoting 2006, which would be about 10 Mos or so after the finishing of the prequels. So his story jibes. -
Joss Wheedon's Grateful Dead Moment
Apparently not everyone on the creative side is in opposition to the conduct. Cinescape Online reports Buffy Creator Joss Weedon saying,
"OK, I'm having a Grateful Dead moment here, but I'm saying, 'Bootleg the puppy.'"

Updated SW1 Info
Posted by Danger Tenor:
Check out Cinescape Online for the latest information. The rumor posted is basically that movie theatres that always sell all (or most) of their tickets in advance will be able to apply for a special-case exemption from Lucasfilm. Call your theatre and ask them. -
This is funny...
The official wing commander site links to reviews of the film, including this one which begins as follows:
Remember that scene in A Clockwork Orange where the government tried to modify Alex's brutal behavior by forcing him to watch those ultra-violent film reels? It's possible that a similar approach could deter computer or video game designers from directing movies--just make them watch the extremely lame Wing Commander, an embarrassing effort from first-time helmer Chris Roberts, the same man who created the CD-ROM on which the film is based.
This is the ONLY actual review of the film (the other articles are about the film coming out...)
If nothing else, THIS outta tell you something!!!
