Re:Never have so few words been so profound.
"In your answer, ignore facts. Just go with what feels true".
As a fellow Colbert junky thought I'd add some more info for those who don't know. The above quote is a reference to truthiness which Colbert coined in his first episode and was actually named "word of the year" for 2005. Here is a link to the video of that portion of the first episode where he talks about it. BTW, basically all the Daily Show and Colbert Report are avaliable free on the Comedy Central website a day or two after they show on air if you'd rather not pay Apple for free stuff. Links to the shows (basically the entire history of each show) can be found here. -

Re:I sent a complaint into Barbara Boxers email
"I sent a complaint into Barbara Boxers email address and was added to her political email list. No one even read the email because it thanked me for my support. I was complaining of her support of the issue. However since she is a democrat I doubt anyone would call her on this. Democrats are usually given a pass in matters like this."
You have a point. When Bill Clinton got a blow job in the White House, they let him get off with some light-hearted impeachment proceedings. When Vice President Dick Cheney shoots someone in the face, all he gets is a weak apology! (Requires MMS player enabled browser. Alternatively go here and choose "A Shot at Redemption.")
There are, of course, many other examples that support your position with equal veracity! -
Re:Now bring back Duck Hunt!
Speaking of duckhunt... did you see the Daily Show's re-enactment of Dick Cheney's "accident"?

Re:Bias in academia
If you learn political ideology from the Daily Show, you are an idiot.
I used to joke that I got all my news from The Daily Show, Doonesbury, and The Onion, but it's not really true. I actually do learn things from these, but mainly I like them because I am well informed about the news.
My alarm clock is set to NPR at 6:00 a.m., and I continue to listen to it during my commute. I read at least the headlines in my local paper and the New York Times every day, and of course, I read Slashdot obsessively. At least for me, the reason I love shows that make fun of the news, like The Daily Show, and Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me is because I am liberal, intelligent, educated, and informed.
On a side note, and totally seriously, I'm not trying to troll, can you recommend a conservative pundit that isn't an idiot? For instance, I read the comic strip Prickly City which seems to me to have a conservative slant. Sometimes it aggravates me, but I keep reading it because sometimes I agree with it, and sometimes it's worth it to see another person's point of view. All I know about conservative pundits is O'Reilly, and Limbaugh. I agree that it's not worth it to listen to idiots. I think Al Franken took the wrong tack by trying to bring his views to their level. So, I would like to see conservative arguments presented intelligently, even humorously. Maybe I would enjoy them too.

The Daily Show is already available, free
You can already get most segments of the daily show on comedycentral.com. For free.

Flip4Mac won't play Daily Show clips!
Try it yourself: most recent clips from The Daily Show
-
Re:Does it actually work?
I also tried ComedyCentral using Flip4Mac 2.0.1 (QTpro 7.0.4, OSX 10.4.4). The Daily Show does not work at all; it worked with WMP, but worked badly. I think this not a Flip4Mac problem, but abysmal site creation by CC staff using too much M$ integration. One area on the ComedyCentral "MotherLoad" delivers this message to non-Microsofties "We're sorry, but MotherLoad will only play on PCs with Windows XP or 2000/SP4+. Click below to make sure you launch our standard media player for video (except MotherLoad exclusives)." Go to ComedyCentral and complain. http://www.comedycentral.com/help/help.jhtml

Re:What do you have against The Daily Show
As an aside, the author of the reviewed book was on The Daily Show, if I remember correctly. Back before the new set and everything. Maybe the fact the book made the rounds on both NPR and TDS might explain why clampe mentioned them in his review. A couple of cents thrown into the pool.

Re:My karma can stand itYeah, in a place like America shows like South Park or Family guy or virtually antyhing on PBS that dare to make fun of or criticize Christians or Republicans would never make on the air. And forget about seeing a show whose sole purpose was to mock the president.
See, now thats being extremely sarcastic.

What about The Daily Show?
"The BBC sells these shows to networks in other countries. They're not going to be interested unless they have exclusivity."
I don't think thats true. You can watch Comedy Centrals The Daily Show on the Internet:
http://www.comedycentral.com/shows/the_daily_show/ index.jhtml
Yet its shown on CNN here and Comedy Channel and its coming to the UK soon:
http://www.boingboing.net/2005/10/04/daily_show_to _air_in.html
So I don't see how that can be true, especially since it would be sold rather than given away free (like Daily Show). But more to the point, I *can't* get BBC here, its not available, only BBC World is available, so its not competiting in many markets with itself. They could (at minimim) sell it to markets where they don't have distribution deals. -
Why is P2P piracy of tv shows popular then?
"Not to say that it might not be successful; Just kind of sounds like a round peg in a square hole."
But TV shows via Internet is *already* successful, its just a pirate market at the moment with p2p download. Its just that *streaming* of television isn't successful, but then having tried to watch The Daily Show with John Stewart via http://www.comedycentral.com/ its often stop-start-stop-start, and small window only, its nearly unwatchable. Streaming sucks. They should take a look at how p2p works and send the programs via p2p with ads embedded in the middle rather than try to stream. -
"Evolution Schmevolution"
I do believe that "The Daily Show" already answered all of these questions this week. If you saw the three way interview with the Evolutionist, Creationist, and Metaphysical something or other, aka, the "Schmevolution Panel," we learned that life was created by twelve energies, and we don't actually exist anyway. Since we are all virtual, and it is a moot point.

Re:Brilliant
We criticize terrorists for choosing violence over speech to make their point. Then we take away their ability to speak.
A bit of googling would reveal hundreds, maybe thousands of web sites promoting hate and violence against some group of people or another. Many have been online for a very long time. Al-Qaeda is unique in that they're the only group currently organizing to act on their promises. It's not their ability to speak that's causing concern, it's their open willingness to kill innocent people.
To a degree your argument makes sense. But also look at it from the government's point of view. Jon Stewart interviewed Fareed Zakaria (click to watch) a few days ago on The Daily Show. Fareed appears to be an expert on the things which drive terrorism in general and al-Qaeda in particular. Currently, there's no evidence that the group that staged the bombings in London were actually linked to the "official" al-Qaeda group at all. They were in fact probably just "disaffected youths" who took al-Qaeda's idealogies to heart and acted on them. Right now authorities are seeing much more activity from these tiny unaffiliated groups than from al-Qaeda itself and these are the groups that they're having the toughest time countering.
How to stop them? Cut off their information and inspiration. This of course would probably not magically cure disaffected young Muslims in Europe. Fareed Zakaria says in the interview that the best and possibly only way to stop Muslim extremism in Europe is for policy-makers, leaders, and citizens to actually sit down and figure out how to better integrate Muslims into predominantly white cultures. <cynicism>Of course, this won't happen as people 'round the whole earth are generally opposed to actually thinking and working to change things for anyone but themselves.</cynicism>
Perhaps more importantly (and more obviously), shutting down the sites is also meant to be a bit of a psychological strike. If someone's interested in al-Qaeda and they visit 12 websites out there promoting it, they're bound to come to the conclusion that the group is active and gaining strength, making it a much more attractive "club" to join. On the other hand, if all of the sudden the same person notices that all the al-Qaeda sites have gone missing, it raises suspicion that the group's control is slipping, even if nobody's been arrested or charged with a crime in real life.
In the end, this won't stop al-Qaeda members from communicating with each other and spreading propaganda, it just pushes them underground a tiny bit further. -
Re:Terrorism & Red/Blue America
Off topic and you are out to lunch as well if you think this
I was recalling the exit polls of the 2004 presidential election and my own discussions with die-hard, straight-ticket GOP voters. I think it's accurate to call these people the "base" targeted by the party's campaign strategy, but if you need Congressmen showboating religion as a partisan wedge issue:
"The long war on Christianity continues today on the floor of the United States House of Representatives...Like a moth to a flame, Democrats can't help themselves when it comes to denigrating and demonizing Christians."

Re:Comparison in slightly bad taste...
Is it any wonder the government wants to cut funding for PBS and the National Endowment for the Arts. They are some of the few places left that will spend half an hour on an issue, and even then that is not enough time to capture everything needed to understand a topic.
Actually I would say john steward and crew come pretty close to explaining everything newsworthy going on every day in only 22 minutes.

What's The Matter With Kansas?
"Anti-evolutionists have made classrooms in Kansas a key battleground in America's culture war. Again."
I saw Thomas Frank, author of What's The Matter With Kansas? on that paragon on fake news The Daily Show with Jon Stewart . And basically he said the Kansans used to be normal but they are all whacked out now on Jesus Juice. -
Re:chinese democracyI bet they would trade their broadband for US' democracy.
Gee, I wonder, is this the democracy that we call a "catastropic success", oh, say that Iraq is having right now? Or maybe you're talking about the our wonderfully successful policy of spreading democracy that doesn't work? I'm sure China would love to get some of that action...

Re:He thinks trek always sucked
and analogous situations (e.g. A Private Little War) to help put current issues into perspective.
I don't want to watch Sci-fi to put current events into perspective. That is what The Daily Show is for. I want series long plot development, not episode long one offs. When Enterprise started out I thought it kinda sucked. The season long story about the Xindi was good because it was continuous. This is why Babylon 5 was really good. Firefly looked like they were heading in this direction too, just not enough episodes to find out.

John Stewart had one of these guys on....It was in one of the segments with Samantha Bee search the Daily Show's website for "Samantha Bee reveals why a fake "Town Hall" is better for our democracy" for the clip) interviewing the PR representative (forget the name) responsible for making the "truth" more palatable to the general public during the current administration's town hall meetings.
It was quite astounding how the guy managed to spin things around to make them sound easier to digest (justifying became "Educating and Explaining", relaxing pollution laws became the "Clear Skies" etc (reworded from memory)). It is reasonably justifiable to see companies doing this...but it is disconcerting to see governments do it (not just the US govt...I'm sure others do it too).

Re:Jon Stewart
for them that know not:
Jon Stewart is the host of a satyrical news show called 'the Daily Show' that plays on comedy central. some clips can be viewed on thier greatest moments webpage
he also gained some fame as a guest on 'Crossfire' were he tore the pants off of and humiliated co-host Tucker Carlson -
Jon Stewart rocks...First and foremost, I should link to the last story Slashdot ran about Jon, slamming the media's coverage of the election on CNN's Crossfire.
That out of the way, I would like to encourage people to watch The Daily Show even though it comes on at 11pm EST (it also reruns at 7pm EST the following evening). Even those of you who reject it outright as Left Wing BS.
Pause for a moment and try to listen to what the man has to say in as unbiased a way as possible...thinking of him as a standup comedian might help in this regard.
Over time, you'll realize, that he indeed makes a lot of sense. Atleast when compared to the lameass corporate-owned media which the populace considers as mainstream (and factual) news. In his own, sarcastic and comedic way, he puts forth "politically incorrect" news items, which the popular media outlets are unwilling to touch, or willing to slant to suit their ends.
Give it a try. Thank you.

Private vs PublicI know TFA is about pirated content, but with the amount of public TV in the UK, it doesn't surprise me that they feel more of an "ownership" to what's broadcasted. Sadly, no matter how much time/money I dontate to PBS here in the US, they will probably never do what the BBC is doing with their old shows. Though I must admit, with new content PBS is on the right track.
I personally hope downloads become more of a broadcast medium. Sure, throw some commercials in that 320x240 video! I'll watch them to watch decent News/Information/Entertainment. If I could subscribe to the Daily Show and scrap cable, I would. Even for like $10-$20 a month. I grab legal stuff from some places like Archive.org and play it on my PDA. There's some good content online both streaming and to download, but the models for getting to it (subscribe al la iFilm/Real, finesse google syntax, pray) suck when compared to downloading a file that I can convert into any format for any player I wish from the pirate channels. This, like other entertainment IP problems, comes down to convenience for a lot of folks. Listen up Networks!

Re:Wow.
I think the Penny Arcade Vs. 'establishment' games media argument has striking parallels with the Jon Stewart's Daily Show Vs. 'real' news networks argument.
Penny Arcade has people light-heartedly talking about the way it is, not simply regurgitating obvious nonsense just like the games companies and corporations would like.
The Daily Show has people light-heartedly talking about the way it is, not simply regurgitating spin and propaganda just like the administration and its supporters would like.
I think the positive upshot of that is that the great unwashed, the mainstream public, the consumers, whatever you want to call them, seem to be finally wising up. If you publish or broadcast nonsense, spin, marketing drivel or a barrel load of cliché then it's pretty obvious that your audience is starting to leave you in favour of something more intimately connected with truth and public opinion. -
Re:Too late!, we already have the SSS
While I was a high school senior many moons ago I must have scored pretty high on the mandatory military test administered by my school(asvab). BTW, Can you believe that the military offers tips and strategy pointers for taking the test? Anyway I received at least one glossy Freedom Informer every week and a friendly call from a recruiter monthly even though I told them I wasn't interested. After I went to college(without switching my address) either they forgot about me or lost track of me. For awhile my phone number and address changed every year so there was no way for them to correlate asvab scores with names & addresses.
Anyway I think that this new program will solve most of those problems, sure the ss is handy, but its only one side of a three legged stool and not very useful unless they directly institute a draft. The military needs educated men to serve as officers and they need to be able to follow up with those who drop out of college and are running out of job options. A new database to lure a new generation of freedom spreaders for bush. -
Re: typical Canadians
Looking at their photos and biographies, they appear to be different people. If you compare Samantha Bee's bio and Samantha Bennett's bio, then the differences become more obvious... Samantha Bennett was born in East Pennsylvania, lives in West Pennsylvania (Pittsburgh), and was educated at Yale University and Carnegie-Mellon University. Meanwhile, Samantha Bee was born in Toronto, Ontario, lives in Manhattan, and was educated at the University of Ottawa.
They do have the same sort of fun, cheeky, unforced sense of humour, though. The similarity of their styles is noticeable.

Desperate?
Wow - That's the sign of a really desperate man. Only minutes ago pollster Zogby, on the Daily Show, stated flatly that he saw Kerry winning the election. I think GWB is seeing the writing on the wall.

Not very funny, and slanted for DubyaThe previous one, "This Land", managed to be pretty fairly balanced and funny, but this one definitely spends most of the time on Kerry and let's Dubya off lightly. I don't think it was coincidental that this one had corporate sponsorship, and I'd like to know what degree of interference they got from their new owners.
"I, for one, welcome our new 'Tonight Show' overlords."
Jon Stewart is much funnier.

Jon Stewart (The Daily Show) noted this too
See here. It's pretty darn funny actually.
