Re:Nothing to see here, move on
Similar to "boycott this game" because features were added / removed that people didnt like.
Here is the Modern Warfare 2 Boycot group and taking careful notice to that image, you see many of them are playing the game they are boycotting.
I found that link on Cad comic's website on Friday, and it definitely fits the bill. The comment I thought resonated the most with the "voting with your wallet" theme -
Though let's be honest for a second... that boycott group could have had two, three, even four-hundred thousand stick-with-it members... in the face of nearly five-million games sold in a single day, that's still a drop in the bucket.
While I agree that voting with your wallet will work, it fails when you see so many people claim to resent the product and buy it anyways. That just tells these companies that, next time, dont use the lube.

The Ctrl+Alt+Del comic never gets old!
Everytime Jack Thompson makes an appearance to applie legal douchbaggery, Tim Buckley looks less like a hack. Hopefully, Jack has not gotten a Swine Flu shot and dies a horrible, horrible death in the near future.

Could somebody in charge of this site please read a book on programming and then fix the site. I can't stay logged in half the time in any browser and pretty much nothing works right under IE. (And no you can't play this "IE doesn't support standards" card. This site fails validation.)

Re:No.
TFA: "Because unmanned aircraft have never routinely operated in the national airspace system, the level of public acceptance is unknown. One researcher observed that as unmanned aircraft expand into the non-defense sector, there will inevitably be public debate over the need for and motives behind such proliferation."
I'm wondering why there's a need for drones to interfly commercial airspace here in the US, especially when that blog also had an article about the Air Force wanting to give drones enough machine intelligence to decide for itself whether deadly force is warranted. What could possibly go wrong with that? Are the new drones gonna be used in the much-publicised 'War' On Drugs or something?

Focus on the AI
I don't care which engine they use anymore. Thief 1/2 engine or Thief 3, either one would work with some enhancements. Yeah, the Thief 3 engine had some *issues*, but that whole generation of ragdoll games had issues. DX2, VTM:B, Thief3...
My biggest hope is some improved AI. Sure, I could make some long, insightful post about the shortcomings of the AI in all three games, but CAD summed it up quite nicely:

Re:The best things in life...
Oblig. CAD Comic on the matter...

It's called "Pulling a Sony"
Let's look at the history of Sony "Pulling Sony's"
1. MD - Mini Disk - My favorite. The MD was superior to the compact disk in nearly every way. On top of that it came out when it could have dented the CD market - unfortunately they did the same thing they did with Beta. Instead of licensing the tech to competitors cheaply the held it close to their chests and charged a fortune - until about a year after it was to late to make a difference. It failed.
2. Beta - I put this below MD because it had more success. Beta was superior to VHS in quality, was better respected among professionals, and was on the market at the right time to defeat VHS, and was even used by early adopters before VHS. But they kept it close to their chest, wouldn't allow competitors to manufacture units until a year or two after it was to late.
3. Atrac - Technology we didn't need to compete with better technology that already exist. This one exist for the sole purpose of establishing "the Sony way of doing it" (as though we need proprietary anything) and more importantly to push DRM on us. After a couple of years of dismal Atrac playing Walkmans sales, they finally started supporting a couple of more common formats.
4. Memory Stick - Sony makes really really awesome hardware - there's no doubt. There's no other way they could stay in business after pulling so many Sony's if they didn't. Memory stick is just another one of those things. Nobody but Sony really uses it, the world wants SD, Sony gives you Memory Stick. Why? Oh yeah, DRM again. Sony finally started supporting SD and Memory Stick on many of their cameras due to massive demand, but they still embrace their proprietary stuff in favor of being proprietary. They want to be like Apple when it comes to proprietary methods, but oddly Apple is more open when than Sony when it comes to compatibility. BTW, the Apple stores in the mall are always full when the Sony stores are half assed.
5. PSP - a REALLY awesome gaming platform on a handheld with massive untapped potential. Sony REFUSES to tap the potential of the PSP. So people hack them. What have the hackers done? Turned it into a universal infrared remote control (1000 only), an external secondary monitor for Windows, an ebook reader, a graphical MythTV remote (1000 and 2000), an iTunes remote, AND de-UMDed it to make it much more useful and portable? Sony's response? Release the nearly unhackable 3000 among firmware updates to do everything they can to leave that potential untapped. They wonder why sales aren't what they wanted them to be.
6. PS3 - I'll leave this article to explain that one.
Honorable mention:
Blu-ray - arguably Blu-ray is a sucess (despite less than expected sales - which should only climb). Initially Sony approached this better then they have most endeavors, by co-operating with competitors a bit more. It was good, better than HDDVD but it failed to smack HDDVD down. I blame cost. My personal prediction was that the dual HD/Blu-ray players would become ubiquitous making the winner a moot point - I was wrong. Mostly because Sony BRIBED the competition. For Blu-ray to actually suceed price is going to have to be addressed. There's little reason to buy an Adam Sandler movie on Blu-Ray for $30 when the DVD version can be had for $14. (Battle) Star Anything, Lord of the Rings, Narnia, yeah, I'll shell out for Blu-Ray, but your average drama or chick flick? When Sony learns to wear pants they'll be an unstoppable force.

Re:It always amazes me
Yeah, I don't understand either why there has to be a news item on Slashdot every time they release a game.
Yeah, you're right, maybe we should stop posting articles every time Linus farts, or every time RMS speaks out against something. Because, you know, those articles don't interest me very much. Oh wait, we can actually ignore those articles we're not interested in, and simply not choose to nag about them.
Is there really a consensus about Penny Arcade being so great? I guess it's a matter of opinion
Yes, it's a matter of opinion. It's like how some people like Dilbert, and yet others don't. Or chocolate ice cream, vanilla ice cream, and even garlic-pistachio-squid flavoured ice cream.
their famous web comic is so unfunny to me I'm trying hard to imagine someone laughing at it
It's like ctrl-alt-del (the webcomic, not the three-fingered salute). I don't know when it's supposed to be funny, and I dread the kind of people laughing at it. For crying out loud, he drew a comic about a miscarriage (haha, dead babies). Yet somehow there seem to be people that religiously follow that comic, and I'm sure if Buckley ever made a game (and I pray that he doesn't, see the dead babies remark) it would sell to those people.
As for your taste... Well, you just have to suffer ours, just like we have to suffer yours, and his.

Re:If Obama wins then ...
I agree. On one hand, we'll have a president who is somewhat tech savvy and a vice-president who despite our contradictions with his philophy of the Internet, knows something about technology law. We just need him to get out of the MPAA, RIAA, and the NCTA's pockets first. Hopefully, Joe Biden has no ties to Jack "Videogames raped me" Thompson.
In terms of foreign policy, Biden is perfect for the job.
In terms of a pro-technology Senate, I believe that in the furture that there WILL be more pro-tech congressmen. Guys in their 30s and 40s running for office who used to be fans of Metal Gear Solid. Former-Iraq War Vets who are angry that the Grandpas in the senate gave them the lowest-common-denominator (the cheap-ass stuff) when they were in battle while the anti-tech grandpas and their special ed bible thumping leaders send their drunken kids on a world-wide vacation to write childrens books.
The Internet is here to enlighten people as to what is really going on. It is impossible to cover up what is really going on with propaganda. Eventually, the truth roars into perspecitive after hiding in the underground until the people of power are put into an embarassing or weak position. -

Re:Why do I...
I second xkcd. Randall Munroe posts on here too, occasionally.
If we're doing webcomics...
I also quite like the off-the-wall humour of ctrl-alt-del, which isn't as Windows oriented as it sounds. It's a bit like Penny Arcade (another recommendation) but with slightly different eccentric wit.
-
Re:Mine
I don't use RSS feeds for webcomics, so here is the set of pages I regularly visit:
XKCD We probably all know this one.
Cyanide and Happiness Somewhat twisted humour.
Errant Story Excellent art and storyline.
Bunny Strange humour about bunnies.
QC Indy rock comic of social interaction.
Megatokyo Megatokyo. Has gone downhill in recent years, but still good art.
Penny Arcade Gamer comic, quite famous.
PBF Perry Bible Fellowship hasn't updated in some time, but very funny when he does.
Edible Dirt is a series of single-panel jokes. Very funny, often somewhat twisted.
Ctrl-Alt-Del is a comic about a few gamer roomates.
LFG WoW/MMO/D&D spoof. Quite funny, good art, interesting plot. Many references break the 4th wall.
Two-Lumps is a comic about cats, 1 smart, 1 very, very dumb. I think the artist is stalking my cat to get ideas for the dumb one.
Gunnerkrigg Court Beautiful art, excellent story. And robots.
underpower hasn't updated in some time, great single-page art pieces recently and an actual story before.
Girl Genius is all about Mad Science.
Bunny System is a comic about psychotic rabbits.
Something Positive is very, very cynical. It actually has 5 webcomics on 1 page. Very much worth checking out.
Head Trip is... a head trip.
FLEM hasn't updated in a while, and has a strange and rather violent storyline. Back to single-panel shorts now.
VGCats video game cats is excellent, if you play video games.
Clan of the Cats Author is going blind, will continue if she gets better. Great story and art.
Dr. McNinja The adventures of Dr. McNinja. Clean art, good story, ninjas on fire.
Code Name: Hunter Magic/technology interaction in a world strangely dominated by talking animals. Excellent facial expressions, especially for being animals.
Awkward Zombie gamer comic similar to vgcats.
No Need for Bushido Samurai story, well drawn and reasonably well written.
Giant ITP hosts both The Order of The Stick, a D&D spoof, and The Battle For Gobwin Knob, a comic about a GM who gets sucked into a world of his own design, on the losing side of a no-win scenario.
Last Blood Zombies have taken over the earth and killed nearly all humans, so now the vampires fight to protect their dwindling food source. Excellent drawing and unique story.
Chopping Block Butch the serial killer. Sick, twisted humour, but very funny.
Dominic Deegan Oracle for Hire, is a good story with pretty good art.
The Traveling Gnome Great art, story seems good so far.
One-Liners may be offensive to some, or funny to those with a sense of humour. -

Heh
Duude, don't discount WoW so fast. With how much my dwarf runs around hills and valleys and thickets, he's probably uber-creative. He's probably composing the next great symphony when I'm not around. Having herbalism as one of the jobs probably also helps, if you know what I mean.
Also, I remember trying one of the (back then) new MS Sidewinder force-feedback joysticks in some Star Wars game, waay back. It was like arm-wrestling an epileptic grizzly bear while he's having a seizure. The damn thing would shake, pull in random directions, and generally act like it had a will of its own. Or like it was possessed by the angry spirit of a spastic monkey who died of a drug overdose.
You want to accelerate? Have some random joystick shake. One of your team mates got too close to you? Let's shake, rattle and roll, baby. You passed by another ship? Arm wrestle this, nerd-boy. Laser fire narrowly missed you? Shake baby, shake. You're trying to carefully aim at a 2 pixel shield generator? Let's have some shaking that you'll be glad if you can keep it on your screen, much less in the crosshair. Etc.
'Cause you know, it's only _realistic_ to simulate turbulence. In space. In a vacuum. Caused by a laser beam. Ookaayy.
If that wasn't a bigger workout than waving your wiimote around, I don't know what is. More depressing too, and, hey, these guys say that being sad is good for your creativity ;) -

Re:Excessive?
This isn't specifically targeted towards gamers.
While a lot of games won't reach the point that they need a clock that fast, Applications that use thousands of arithmetic or other basic CPU-based operations over long periods of time will easily use this power.
I'm guessing these processors will show up more frequently when associated with cad development / computer animation / data mining / compiling / ect. while there may be gamers like this that mistakenly think a high number will help them with everything, it is not the direction this processor is taking. -
Re:Never put your eggs in one basket.Lesson 4.
Never assume that you are 100% safe. There are always ways around things... I (unfortunately) used to work for Geek Squad and you wouldn't believe how many people got completely enraged about this one. They would bring in a virus-ridden computer in (mainly because they didn't follow lessons 1, 2 or 3) and ask why their firewall or virus software didn't catch the error. I had to explain that there are always ways around security measures and they need to continually update to help prevent this, but there is no failsafe. The conversation that generally followed is "So you're saying I spent ~$40 on a firewall and ~$40 on antivirus and it may not even prevent me from malware?!"
It made me wish I worked at a place like this just so I could tell them where to stick their virus protection. -

Dude, I have a PS3 and even actually play it from time to time (although I have to admit that today's (7/27) Ctrl-Alt-Del comic http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php rings a little too true). I don't understand why everyone on Slashdot seems to hate Sony so badly.
But even *I* think your post seems a little off-the-wall and reeks of Sony astroturfing. -

It almost makes the PS3 worthwhile! Except not!
