Re:lol...
There will probably be a slight increase in thyroid cancer rates. Luckily, thyroid cancer is one of the most-survivable types, especially when detected early, and people who were in the area will be checked regularly. The number of cancer deaths statistically-attributable to this will be very low, and as someone further down noted, the 20,000 dead by the tsunami will far-exceed them.
Further proof that the threat of all things nuclear is just a diversion to take our attention away from the true danger. Dihydrogen Monoxide. This is the true menace to mankind. If we would have rid this planet of this toxic substance years ago those 20,000 people wound not have died (in the tsunami). In fact we wouldn't even be talking about Fukashima at all right now.

Re:Flouride..
Di-Mono-Hydrogen-Oxide? Surely you mean the deadly Dihydrogen Monoxide!
-
Re:Interesting correlation.
This is no joke, people everywhere are affected by unknowningly overdosing on DHMO. Please check with your local GP if you're experiencing these symptoms:

Re:They use chemicals???!!!?!
Do they use DMHO? That's one of the nastiest chemicals there is. And it's all over the place, too!
-
Re:find him, prosecute him
He should have reported that Dihydrogen Monoxide has been detected in the city's water system.
:-DFor the uninitiated (see http://dhmo.org/
Dihydrogen monoxide:
is called "hydroxyl acid", the substance is the major component of acid rain.
contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
may cause severe burns.
is fatal if inhaled.
contributes to the erosion of our natural landscape.
accelerates corrosion and rusting of many metals.
may cause electrical failures and decreased effectiveness of automobile brakes.
has been found in excised tumors of terminal cancer patients.Despite the danger, dihydrogen monoxide is often used:
as an industrial solvent and coolant.
in nuclear power plants.
in the production of Styrofoam.
as a fire retardant.
in many forms of cruel animal research.
in the distribution of pesticides. Even after washing, produce remains contaminated by this chemical.
as an additive in certain "junk-foods" and other food products. -
Re:Surely...
SOME people even think it's poison!
-
Re:Hey Slashdot Editor!
And what about hydro power? There's DHMO all over the place at hydro power plants!
-
Re:Need a Survey / Cognitive Risk
Also ask whether they're aware of the risks of DHMO.
-
It has to be the di-hydrogen monoxide content
-
Re:Another "ban"
How about banning hydrogen dioxide too? It is extremely dangerous when in liquid form and kills a lot more people (kids and adults) when inhaled.
Did you by chance mean dihydrogen-monoxide? http://www.dhmo.org/
-
Re:Now you did it...
So..... instead of assuming that everyone knows the dangers, please educate me. That's an honest request actually.
You can ignore the conspiracy idiots.
The conspiracy theory centers around fluoride being an industrial waste product... so presumably somebody faked the bone/dental tests so that water companies would pay them to haul away their trash (fluoride).
"Fluoride poisoning" is a real condition, but you need far more than you would get in tap water. In fact "Water Intoxication" is a real condition too, but nobody would claim we don't need to drink water (but then again: http://dhmo.org/coverup.html).

Re:gateway
Dihydrogen Monoxide kills!

Re:gateway
Water?! This fact should be added to dhmo.org ASAP to further the warnings about this dangerous substance!
PS:
/., is it really necessary to tease me with the CAPTCHA "disjoint"?! -
Re:2 million years of evolution
Yeah we need far more testing on radiation. Especially in the 400nm to 700nm range.
Sure they say its perfectly safe but how long have we been exposing ourselves to it? More data is required!
Together with dihydrogen monoxide.
World would be much better off without such radiation and substances.
-
Re:You know it's coming
Ah, it's not that bad if you take proper safety precautions. That's why I put the MSDS sheet above the sink in my lab.
-
Chemicals are dangerous!
See this website for information about the extremely dangerous chemical known as "Dihydrogen Monoxide"!!!
 -
Beware Dihydrogen Monoxide
Beware Dihydrogen Monoxide. It can kill you within minutes, yet is it everywhere around you.

DHMO
Need I point out the most dangerous of all chemicals, Dihydrogen Monoxide? Especially with this year being the 100th anniversary of the Titanic incident, where a large number of the fatalities were actually due to DHMO poisioning, a fact that the One World Government has covered up?
-
Re:Here we go
Good advice. DHMO is found in at least trace quantities in the majority of humans in industrialized nations.
DHMO kills many people every year by interfering with oxygen transfer. It is also found in large quantities in patients with many neurological diseases - to the extent that it would be newsworthy if doctors were unable to detect DHMO in most such patients. -
Re:Windfall, the movie.
My initial reaction was that we still have not figured out the full impact of dihydrogen monoxide on people - yet we still use the stuff daily.
Yeah, that dihydrogen monoxide is some nasty shit. Most abundant corrosive solvent in every house today. That shit's downright dangerous. They oughta ban it!!!!
Oh, wait, they already tried banning that... http://www.dhmo.org/environment.html and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dihydrogen_monoxide -
Re:That warning applies to a lot more..
Hey, now that's different. All those other things are just jokes but dihydrogen monoxide really is dangerous. After all, it contains the hydroxyl radical. Its also used in nuclear power plants. We need to ban dihydrogen monoxide NOW.

Re:There would be no healthcare crisis in the U.S.
I hate when people try to rationalize a chemical being bad because it was "Originally classified" as something bad, or "was develeped as" something bad. Neither of those are legitimate arguments. Those arguments are exactly why the DHMO jokes are funny. http://www.dhmo.org/

Re:Isn't that anti-science?
Looks like I can't edit posts on Slashdot (it's been years). I remember hearing about dihydrogen monoxide in my high school chemistry class. And also in a college science class, and once or twice by people I knew. You know, It even sounds more dangerous than carbon dioxide. Did you know that even a small amount of inhilation can lead to death? See also, http://www.dhmo.org/ of http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

Re:Water Vapor: The new enviro-enemy
With tsunami, river floods, jokulhlaups, and hurricanes a regular occurrence somewhere in the world and responsible for killing thousands of people per year, you aren't far off, because most of these ultimately have their origin from water vapour at some point. For more information, please refer to this web site.
-
Re:idiocy
All we do know for sure is the dominant greenhouse gas on earth is water vapor.
Dihydrogen monoxide strikes again! Is there any problem that we face that cannot be traced back to it?
;-) -
Re:You'd think...
You can overdose on water, too. Should water be illegal?
Yes.
-
Re:Daily Mail should call out to ban this evil gam
The case study for this type of thing is the ban dihydrogen monoxide movement.
-
Re:Great Idea
Three words for you.. "arterial gas embolism". You may think you need a lot of air, but put it in the wrong place and you'll find yourself dead. Air is dangerous stuff. They should outlaw it, just like dihydrogen monoxide. Save the world, save yourselves, outlaw this dangerous stuff !
-
Magic!
What they fail to mention is that it requires Dihydrogen Monoxide which is highly dangerous to humans when inhaled and can lead to suffocation. They should immediately ban this voodoo.
-
Re:Water can kill you too
Isn't that what dhmo.org is all about?
For what it's worth, I usually hear of this with long distance (marathon) runners, though I once heard of a guy who went nuts drinking water non-stop from a garden hose until he hit toxicity.
-
Re:The trick is using oxygen
But will the EPA let you get away with storing large quantities of Dihydrogen Monoxide?
-
Re:Just Protecting Him From Himself
Yes, water is much too dangerous. Better to use pies, jello, or pillows.
-
Don't forget dihydrogen monoxide
A pool in the hudson would be filled with a lot of dihydrogen monoxide. This might be the main hazard people will be exposed to.

contributes to the "greenhouse effect".
may cause severe burns.

Re:The summary is, of course, wrong.
Therefore toilets cause colon cancer!
100% of all colon cancer victims use a toilet on a daily basis!
Let's keep it in perspective, the DHMO in the toilet is *far* more likely to be involved.
-
Re:Dihydrogen Monoxide *is* a serious threat
Here's the MSDS information for it. I have it posted wherever I have to use DHMO in the lab.
-
Re:Dihydrogen Monoxide *is* a serious threat
Everyone knows about the hazards of DHMO these days, but you you know what's even worse? In winter DHMO forms solid coatings on roads and causes all sorts of accidents due to its low coefficient of friction. The solution? They literally throw tons of an even *more* toxic substance on roads, called halite, in order to remove the solid DHMO! The same halite is well-known to be toxic if ingested in significant quantities. I'm not sure which is really worse, the DHMO or halite, but it's obvious the chemical lobby has been at work again, making sure billions of our tax dollars are spent spreading toxic halite in the environment to solve a problem (DHMO) that the chemical industry created in the first place.

Ban Sugar and DHMO!
Sugar and Dihydrogen Monoxide pose the greatest dangers to our children. http://dhmo.org/
-
Re:Now now, let's not be hasty.
Unregulated coffee can be DANGEROUS.
Doesn't anyone on slashdot take things seriously anymore? You're probably sipping your coffee and laughing -- but coffee contains very high quantities of dihydrogen monoxide (DHMO), which can kill in high amounts. See here:
http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html
Thanks to careful forethought, most grocery stores sell DHMO-free coffee. This is also why Starbucks puts so much other crap in theirs -- a lot less room for DHMO.

Re:Making Steam uses up Water
What!?!?!
You want to conserve the stuff? It's dangerous!!
Take a look here.
We should be calling for the banning of it all together.
But if this type of engine can produce useful energy while safely incinerating what you claim as a "limited naturil resorse" , then I'm all for it. -

The worst thing you have done is released that dangerous solvent we call water.
Not just water, it releases dihydrogen monoxide!
-
Re:Noooooooooo!!!!!!1111!11!
I don't want to cause undue alarm, but you need to search the web TODAY about carrots and developmental abnormalities.
No no no no no no!
All of the real research is being done into dihydrogen monoxide, that insidious compound that has been known to be associated with many diseases!
Although I hear that they are finding that hydrogen hydroxide can be useful in dealing with dihydrogen monoxide problems.
-
Re:ruined
Right; whoever reads this is bound by the Slashdot code of secrecy not to explain it to any media people (or other non aware "sheep") at pain of having a dihydrogen monoxide poisoning attempt. Trust me, if you do give the game away, wait two days and then demand your food is tested for DHMO. We will find you. It will be there. We will get it into all and everything you eat.

DHMO is fatal
Did you know that 100% of people exposed to DMHO either already have or will die?
