Re:What sort of plastic?
one of the most toxic compounds known to man
What is your source for the above comment? Your link only refers to the toxicity (degree to which something is poisonous) of DiHydrogen Monoxide, while not actually claiming it as being toxic itself.
I mean, shit - even water is toxic, if you drink too much of it, but I wouldn't go around saying it is one of the most toxic substances known to man. ;) -
Wake up mods! DHMO = H2OWake up mods! DHMO = H2O. The linked website is clearly a gag and the parent poster was surely aiming for "+5 funny" rather than the "insightful" moderation he's showing right now. I guess he won't be complaining about the karma bonus, tho'.
Here are some links about dihydrogen monoxide:

Re:What sort of plastic?
Will we have toxic fumes along the lines of the DEHP that makes vinyl siding your house a public safety risk?
Are you kidding? This is a BRIDGE over DiHydrogen Monoxide, one of the most toxic compounds known to man, and you're worried about the toxicity of combustion byproducts *just in case* the bridge catches on fire?
Sheesh. -
Close the library while you're at itReally, if we're going to censor information, communication, and access, whey even bother with the library at all? Burn those books baby! There's naughty words in that one, and that one could contain information about CHEMISTRY, allowing everyone to know how to make di-hydrogen-oxide http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html! Next thing you know people will be thinking for themselves instead of the way they're supposed to!
All or nothin' baby, pick a side and write your government reps http://www.congress.org/congressorg/home/ cuz they don't care what you post here!
-
Re:Warning...
Oxygen is one of the MAIN COMPONENTS of the DEADLY COMPOUND known as DIHIDROGEN MONOXIDE! Why hasn't our government BANNED these substances yet?!
-
Re:Warning...
Dihydrogen-Monoxide can help prevent those issues, but it is responsible for thousands of deaths every year!

Re:Glycol?
"Water", or even "mineral oil" doesn't sound as sciency as "glycol" or "isopropynol".
How about some Dihydrogen Monoxide instead? -
Re:As long as it worksDHMO kills babies! DHMO has been linked to the growth of E. Coli, and is used in every jar of baby food and formula.

Re:Theropy the answer?
Chilhood obesity? Bad behaviour? Game 'addiction'? The best cure for all the these ailments is a hard fucking slap and being told you get off your ass and get a life.
Question: What are children supposed to do?
They cannot play football - their soccer mom would berate them for not "trying hard enough" when they are already leading by 12 points.
They cannot socialize with others - for obvious reasons. Naturally, those symptoms are fallbacks because they don't need to worry about the other child abusing peers.
They cannot take up other hobbies - they already have school work and an existing hobby.
I'm all open to suggestions, but berating them just because they don't have comfortable alternatives is no different than administering random shocks to lab rats (who basically become afraid of doing anything and doing nothing, resulting in neurotic behaviour.)Better yet, lets just take off every safty label in existance and let the problems with self discipline and stupidity sort itself out.
Safety labels are required - if you do that, there will be no reference to handling hazardous chemicals - and would obviously drop chemistry back down to alchemy.
Likewise, children/adults have no other information that something can be corrosive (e.g. bleach) and may follow an incorrect procedure to wash the bleach off (i.e. not take the full 20 minutes to rince away all chemicals.) -
Re:Jack Thompson is a useless twit.
I estimate that approx 100% of felons have consumed a dangerous pharmaceutical chemical known as Dihydrogen Monoxide shortly before committing crimes. Indeed, this lethal poison is widespread, able to be purhased at many stores without ID, even commonly sold to minors! It contaminates lakes and high concentrations can even be found in the breast milk of mothers who go on to pass the deadly substance onto their newborns.
This evil must be stopped!

DMHO is deadly!
I can't believe they would be so irresponsible as to use dihydrogen monoxide for data storage. That stuff is deadly!
-
Re:We must completely ban the use of...
Yes, Dihydrogen monoxide can be deadly stuff -- and it's everywhere!
See: http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html
(I especially love the "even after careful washing, food and produce that has been contaminated by DHMO remains tainted by DHMO" -- once you realize what DHMO is, this comment elicits a loud "DUH!")
Seems as if you shout loudly enough with what sounds like science, you'll get a lot of people worked up over just about anything, regardless of what the reality really is... -
Re:Addictions...
I've seen studies that claim exercise, jogging, gambling, video games, food, sex, etc. are all "addicting".
I'm currently fighting a DHMO addiction. Every time I think I'm getting close to kicking the habbit, I relapse, just like our corporate overlords want! -
Re:Stupid.
I assume this is what your referring to.

Re:Sounds DangerousThat's nothing. The highly dangerous chemical Dihydrogen Monoxide has been allowed on aircraft for years, and calls for banning it have been summarily ignored. According to this essay at DHMO.org, it is known to frequently cause severe burns, and inhaling it is often lethal. Its MSDS states it forms dangerous explosive gases if you only mix it with calcium carbide.
Now that's a terrorist's dream. Methanol is the least of our problems.

Re:This is not news.
keep in mind the long-term effects of depleted uranium, not just on Iraqis, but on US forces as well)
It's depleted uranium. What long term effects? If you're really worried about DU, how about getting the non-depleted uranium out of our Coal smokestacks?
I suppose next you're going to tell us that 747s shouldn't use DU beams to maintain structural integrity and airplane balance. I mean, it might be TEH R4D104CT1V3, D000Dzz! Run for the hills! Don't fly, drive, go outside, inside, DOOD LOOK THE HELL OUT FOR EVERYTHING! Oh, and please support the petition to outlaw Dihydrogen Monoxide.
Pathetic. -
Too many chemicals
Are you talking about Hydric Acid, a highly corrosive industrial solvent? Accidental respiration of which "is the second leading cause of accidental death, averaging approximately 8000 deaths per year in the United States alone."
-
Re:fluoride is toxic waste
Thats the typical "industrial waste" strawman argument...
Perfect example of course is the fact that dihydrogen monoxide is also a common industrial waste. -
What about DHMO?
I think it's all this DHMO around us that we REALLY should be worried about. This stuff is dangerous. http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html

Methane not the 2nd most powerful greenhouse gasI was at a presentation a couple of months ago where one of Environment Canada's senior climatologists made the observation that CO2 is the second most powerful greenhouse gas, and methane is the third. The most important (in terms of affecting the atmosphere's ability to retain heat) is water vapour.
This sits well with anyone who has ever spent a winter in the Canadian prairies. Cloudy nights are "warm", say -5 degrees C, whereas clear nights are cold, like -25 degrees C.
So we have to ban that dihydrogen monoxide stuff.
-
Re:the media
OMFG! Thank you so much! I would not have beleived that if I hadn't seen it. It remind me so much of the dangers of dihydrogen monoxide

Re:Myth
For god sake don't drink dihydrogen monoxide! Won't somebody think of the children?
-
Re:They are missing the point...Water vapor is contributing to global warming because it has very high levels of dihydrogen monoxide.

We need to ban the use of this substance globally! Will humanity never learn?

dihydrogen monoxide
I bet he wants to use dihydrogen monoxide as a coolant too. Got to watch out its dangerous stuff. http://www.dhmo.org/
-
Re:So it "converts" ...
I'd be careful of anything involving dyhdrogen monoxide.
Dihydrogen Monoxide is not believed to be carcinogenic, although it is known to be a component of a number of cancer-causing agents. Additionally, the cause of approximately 20 percent of all cancers is not known, and there is reason to suspect that DHMO may play some role in these as well. Clearly, more research is needed before DHMO's role is fully enumerated.
More information is available from the main website -
Re:Toxic? Nonsense!aying that moon-dust is toxic because it could cause silicosis is like saying water is toxic becuase you can drown in it.
Funny you should say that. Have you been informed of all the dangers of water?
Dihydrogen Monoxide -
Re:di-hydrogen monoxide
Yes -- Each year, Dihydrogen Monoxide is a known causative component in many thousands of deaths and is a major contributor to millions upon millions of dollars in damage to property and the environment. Some of the known perils of Dihydrogen Monoxide are:
* Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
* Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
* Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
* DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
* Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
* Contributes to soil erosion.
* Leads to corrosion and oxidation of many metals.
* Contamination of electrical systems often causes short-circuits.
* Exposure decreases effectiveness of automobile brakes.
* Found in biopsies of pre-cancerous tumors and lesions.
* Often associated with killer cyclones in the U.S. Midwest and elsewhere.
* Thermal variations in DHMO are a suspected contributor to the El Nino weather effect.
Lean about the dangers now! -
Re:As usual,
Don't you know how dangerous that is? http://www.dhmo.org/
-
Re:At least its a dry heat?
There have been websites warning about the adverse effects of water for years now, ever since a student did a high school science project on the chemical. The websites tend to use obscure names such as dihydrogen monoxide, or DHMO for short. Of course, there are always the extremists who advocate for this substance. They also like to use scientific names such as hydrogen hydroxide to confuse their opposition.
-
Re:What about hydrogen
Simply stating:
H + B -> 3 He + ~10.000.000 eV
H2O + ~10eV -> H2 + O2
See, for example, this and this.
We can see that this reaction is really benefical, because it removes dihydrogen monoxide from the environment. ;-) -
Dangers associated with DHMO
As a concerned member I did some research on DHMO and found the following facts
* Death due to accidental inhalation of DHMO, even in small quantities.
* Prolonged exposure to solid DHMO causes severe tissue damage.
* Excessive ingestion produces a number of unpleasant though not typically life-threatening side-effects.
* DHMO is a major component of acid rain.
* Gaseous DHMO can cause severe burns.
* Contributes to soil erosion.
I say we try to stop these hydrogen fuel cells as soon as possible before more DHMO is produced. -
Re:Cleaner?
There's a petition group trying to get people off their addiction to this poisonous liquid that is responsible for numerous hospitalizations a year: http://www.dhmo.org/ .
Store outside of childrens' reach. -
Re:Cleaner?
Oh, don't worry, we'll get there with banning DHMO. A few years ago the Green Party in New Zealand decided that starting a campaign to ban DHMO would be a good idea.
Yes... this really happened.
For those interested in this very nasty chemical, I suggest you visit http://www.dhmo.org/facts.html -
Re:Help me out here
> like calling water bad because you can drown in it
The dangers you alluded to are greatly underappreciated. See this page for more on the hidden scourge of the 21st century! -
One more common killer:
Be really careful about this one.
They say it's already in all our water supplies! Shocking. -
Re:this isn't the only problem with the food chain
Nutrasweet.
MSG
salts (For those that don't get it, ask a nurse about this old saw "The dose makes the poison". Anything, even the most basic element of life, is deadly in excessive quantities.)
"Preservatives" is a little generic. Even salt in its most basic form is a preservative. Sugar is as well. Liquid maple syrup preserves (get this) hardened maple syrup. So, yeah... hmmm... I'll let you all have at this one.
As far as olestra goes, the results of eating too much (dose makes the poison again) are clearly labelled on the packaging, and apart from being messy, aren't any more dangerous than eating several bowls of all bran.
Did you know that MSG is in breast milk? Yup, in fact, the purpose of MSG is to make food "moreish". This way babies are more inclined to keep drinking mother's milk. I don't see babies suffering from migraines. -
Re:That blog is a waste of bitsI could come up with a simmiar list of the negative effects of useing oxygen.
Don't forget the lethality of dihydrogen monoxide...
http://www.dhmo.org/truth/Dihydrogen-Monoxide.html -
In case no one RTFA......there is nothing here but a way to capture and purify the water vapor in engine exhaust. No magic, no alchemy. When hydrocarbons are burned, lots of various reactions take place, but most significantly:
C + O2 = CO2, and
H + O2 = H2OInternal combustion engine exhaust is chock full of that nasty pollutant, dihydrogen monoxide. The only new and interesting development here is someone is attempting to perfect a method to capture that H2O in a useable form, at a rate of "one gallon of water for every two gallons of fuel burned."
-
Bullshit
Anyone remember when they tried to convince us that dihydrogen monoxide was a hoax too?
-
Re:But as Sideshow Bob says...
Well, we all know how nasty DHMO can be at times...
-
Re:Grubbs is great
It's been a LOOOONG time since I took my chemistry class, so I can't seem to figure out exactly what you are talking about. What is quintuply-bonded carbon? Is this one of those jokes like dihydrogen monoxide?
-
Re:That may be true!
OMG, you're right! It's not even the most evil, pernicious or destructive of the greenhouse gases. We must sign an international treaty immediately to stop this incredible threat to the earth.
After much research (mid-post), I have discovered that the threat is much more far reaching than mere climate change. We must do something now!
In Pasta we trust, RAmen.
