Re:MAKE sucks
Science and technology are not 'pop' subjects, despite however many Mythbuster episodes you've seen.
Why not? Given the constant bemoaning of state of science and technology education and the lack of interest in it, I would have thought fun projects and that fact that the Ardrino was featured in a mainstream magazine, that would be good news. But I guess not. We should maintain the status quo.
But yeah, go back to your pithy dismissive one or two line comments, hipster attitude. By the way, how is that working out for you? That's just super.

First I will add a plug for https://www.bloglines.com/ â" RSS feeds where ever I can log in, via HTTPS. Re:Good, maybe REAL artists will now have a chance
All popular music is worthless. If anyone with a clean shirt and a decent haircut has heard of a band, then they're over-processed sellout pop shit for teenagers. It's a scientifically proven fact that the worth of a band is inversely proportional to the number of records they've sold.

Re:Renaming fun
Actually, it's "Buccaneer-Americans"...not the other way around.
-
"Terroristic threat" != "terrorist threat"
The term "terroristic threat" has been around a long time, and has nothing to do with "terrorism" or a "terrorist threat", as it is used in the vernacular.
The term and legal notion of "terroristic threat" has been around for a long time, and has nothing to do with the "war on terror", 9/11, the Bush administration, or censorship.
Also, he is a contract employee who can be released at any time for any reason, even moreso than a normal at-will employee who also can be released at any time for any reason.
Even Boyd himself in his interview correctly notes that "a terroristic threat is an old legal concept".
He is also not charged with any crime (though technically he could be), but that's always true. He says the "detectives at least seem satisfied" that he was "harmless", and showed samples of his work to one of the detectives.
It would be better to read his interview, instead of believing someone thinks this has anything to do with "terrorism" or a "terrorist threat" (no one does; remember, "terroristic threat is a legal concept that has been around a long time).
Actually, I take that back. There are people painting this as allegedly being thought of as "terrorism". It's people who want to get all indignant about it.
By the way: anyone who thinks Virginia Tech could have "prevented" this shooting somehow, this is exactly what you get. -

Also, if you're an American, I'd like to suggest the Diesel Sweeties' "We're not ALL jerks" t-shirt. Whether you like it or not, you represent the country and culture you're from. Represent it well. You might be one of the few people someone might meet from wherever you're from.

Re:Here's a tip
Why shouldn't we be able to run around and sell DVDs and other merchandise? I am not talking about recent movies, like the original thread is, I am talking about movies or other items created over ten years ago. Why can I not make my own StarTrek or StarWars merchandise or even stuff based off of that stupid mouse? The answer is copyright law and how it is so messed up.
A few years back I came across a site where a guy was taking his VHS originals (non SE) of StarWars, and transferring them to DVD. His screenshots sure looked a whole lot better than what Lucas put out on DVD regarding the non SE version of StarWars.
Another thing, the comic Diesel Sweeties received a Cease and Desist letter from Lucas regarding some of their shirts. With the exception of the Robot Jesus shirt, the others should not be targetted in anyway under current copyright law, however, technically he should be able to do whatever he wants with characters and ideas from something created and released almost thirty years ago. Link to some of the information regarding this incident and there is more above and below that bookmark, and as of this moment the image of the letter is not loading. I just recently found that comic and it is entertaining most of the time.
As for Serenity, it is still new, so what they are doing is legally acceptable, but they should really look over how they go after this type of thing. Regarding Firefly? Well it came out years ago but still is within a copyrights acceptable range. However, I believe Mr Whedon should be the one who decides this, it is his creation, they really need to redo those contracts. -
Re:Huh?
I'm not sure how much "interaction" actually occurs on myspace, but maybe that will be better with the "older" crowd. This pretty much nails the experience for me: http://www.dieselsweeties.com/archive.php?s=1588

Re:Smoking Not Allowed...
Apple zealots, OSS zealots, and now California zealots? Great. I was really hoping we could up the flame ratio around here.
Well, since you asked...
California has the issue that the parts that have good jobs have unreasonable housing prices and unfriendly people; and the areas that have friendly people and reasonable housing prices have lousy jobs.
Austin, TX has the small-town feel of the Northern California communities (think Chico); friendly people; a socially liberal atmosphere (but, being Texas, still a healthy respect for 2nd amendment rights and homeowners' ability to protect their property); no state income tax; reasonable housing prices (by the standards of places that aren't Texas) and actual available tech industry jobs.
Granted, there are issues when leaving the People's Republic of Left Texas -- rumor is that the rest of the state is infested with Republicans.

Wearing an "I AM COOL(TM)" t-shirt would be very cool as long as you recognized how uncool it was to be wearing it. Fashion is very complicated.

Re:So...
First, you should link to PA's comic directly, or your commentary on the strip won't make sense in a couple days. Second, black and white is not necessarily bad (Megatokyo is mostly in black and white). The problem with Userfriendly's art is not so much that it's not in color as that it's drawn with all of the skill of a three year old child. If the story was good or the humor funny, it could make up for the bad artwork. Sadly, neither of those are the case.
For the record, I just pulled a couple comics at random. As has already been mentioned, Diesel Sweeties is also good, as well as many others (ctrl+alt+del, Mac Hall when they update, Angst Technology, etc). All of these are better than UF, in story, art, and humor. If UF could pull even one of those out of its rear, it might be worth browsing once a month or so. Until then it's nothing more than a reason to laugh at people that think it's good.

Re:Just say no
Er, open source people should not be working for Microsoft, as a general rule.
Ethics are a luxury for those who can afford new pants.Seriously, Microsoft is not the `Ultimate anti-open-source company' or anything. (And where did you hear that it was Microsoft anyways?) They're probably less closed-source than many other companies out there.
Ultimately, it's difficult to pay the bills by writing open source software. So many open source developers work for companies making closed source software. It may not be ideal, but it's reality.
As for the guy's question, yes, I'd suggest giving them a list of every program or project he's ever contributed to in any way, even if the contribution was as simple as suggesting that they fix a misspelled word on page 4 of the documentation. And if this isn't practical, I'd suggest not taking the job.
As far as the contract being non-negotiable, everything is negotiable. If he's made up his mind that he's not going to take the job with the contract as written, bring a marker and strike (black out) the offending parts of the contract at signing and initial each one. Then sign the new contract. They may just go ahead and accept it.
Oh, and I'd suggest consulting an attorney -- $100 to have somebody read over the contract could be very cheap insurance. Consulting
/. is not a subsitute for competent legal advice. -
Re:Sounds about right
I'm not so certain. I think, with today's technology and mass-marketing of games, $50 is more than reasonable...
Think about it... the SNES or Genesis game was a piece of hardware in itself. The game today is about $.10 of pressed plastic and some (terse and uninformative) manuals. Also, call me a fogie, but quality of many games (Half-Life 2 and others excluded) are
... eh...Asking for more that $50 is like saying "find me on bittorrent, Buccaneer-Americans"... seriously.
Saying the "typical" (yet ever-shifting) demographic of games ranges from 12 year olds to 27 year olds. Say they on average make $10-$20 an hour. So after taxes, etc. they have to put down about 3-6 hours of blood sweat and tears for a game... Reasonable for something they will enjoy, but not really a compulsive buy at the $50 price point. Raising it to $60 or $70 puts a little bit of a twist and a flick in turning that particular blade.
The economics is clearly linked to how broad of a market base you have. Jacking the price up 20% may push people away.
I am still impressed with cheap, but wonderful games that are still available, some from indie firms, others not. Either way... I can't see myself (as a respectible, employed person in his mid-twenties) forking down more than $50 for a game unless I knew it was brilliant. I often wait a few months (egad) or pick up older titles I know are good that I never got a chance to play.
Just my 2 cents.
In other news, the fun is back oh yesiree, its the 2600 from A-atari.

Quality over quantity?
I'd take a once a month (if you are lucky) gem like Sexylosers over something that's updated just for the sake of it. Clay (aka Hard) sends a mail out when he's finished a comic, and it's always a pleasant surprise. Be warned it's the least work-safe comic imaginable - the warning says If you are offended at all by full nudity (both sexes), images of sex involving consenting adults, images of sex involving only one person, risque humour or human secretions of any kind, this is NOT the site for you.
Wigu does manage to be good every weekday, but it takes something special to keep that work rate up, which might be why Wigu has just reinvented itself for the 2nd time, becoming "Magical Adventures in Space", now that the Wigu Tinkle storyline has reached it's natural conclusion... still full of topatoey goodness though!
The other one I check every day apart from the usual Dilbert (ocassionally very funny - but a lot less often these days) User Friendly (thank goodness for ad blocking!) and Diesel Sweeties is Scary Go Round which is beautifully crafted, and has a quirky English humour that appeals to me, being a quirky Englishman.
