Re:This is not invading MS territory.Agreed, I think a lot of Google products are fire and motion tactics.
The one problem with this, though, is that if the products they release are so-so to begin with (it's Beta!), but then don't improve over time, it disaffects those customers using those products. Google Calendar looks nice, but I can't/won't use it regularly until it has two-way Outlook Calendar syncing (which I'm not holding my breath for, either).
Also, Google Reader is rather bleh IMO compared to other online aggregating options. For me, the only really impressive, stable, I'd-recommend-it-to-others offerrings from Google are:
- Search
- Toolbar (although not for FireFox)
- Google Desktop Search
- GMail
- Google Maps

Re:I DisagreeAnd, to your government, both of those activities are not equally immoral.
Steal a CD, get a small fine and perhaps a short jail stay. A recent copyright bill suggests 10 year prison terms for attempting to download a movie (i.e., not even fully committing the crime!).
Someone on Digg suggested murdering the person who is about to turn you in for copyright violation, as that only carries a 5 year prison sentence.
Back in merry old England, pickpockets were put to death if convicted. This only served to turn them into murdering pickpockets, as they were less likely to be identified.

Moving Country Moving but onto Anonymous P2P
"Pirate Bay will reappear in Ukraine, Russia, The Netherlands and three other countries."
Warez sites are moving about to other countries, and some are even popping up on Freenet now. I think anonymous p2p will be the next main phase.
The first phase was napster (centralized in many respects), then second generation p2p was gnutella and emule, and now the third generation has Freenet, I2P, GNUnet, Rodi, AntsP2P, Mute, etc. Even if you're not interested in the issue the back and forth conflict between the media companies and programmers is interesting - I wonder who'll win out in the end. -
Re:Street date? Meh.
I'm still waiting patiently for the Canal Street date, when some DS lites "fall off the back of a truck" and I can haggle the distinguished proprietor down to $50.
You DO know that Canal Street merchandise is typically cheap knockoffs of the real thing, right?
You'll feel like a sucker once you realize you just paid fifty bucks for a "Neo Double Lite". -

Re:I have to say
Yes, the point is just to change it, and get rid of the retina-burning, head-straining layout of today. You actually LIKE this 1998-era Times New Roman-infested layout? I've never seen a post that defended Slashdot's look. Nearly all commentary on the matter has centered around how badly it needs to change. It was a miracle from God that it went CSS, and now we have this.
Of course, the shitty moderation system (still a -1 to +5 system in 2006) and poor editing won't go away, but at least it looks a little better than it did when compared to the excellent Digg. -

I think Google has already peaked
Google has already peaked. It used to be that the quality of links in Google's search results were very good, and reflected pages with good content. No more. The spammers have figured out how to put their pages on top of Google's searches. The trick, basically, is to have a lot of pages with links to each other, which fools Google's link ranking algorithm.
For example, Here is a bogus blog site which is trying to Googlebomb. It looks like a blog site, but the site in question just grabs text from RSS feeds and makes a bogus blog, which also has ads which this spammer hopes to get high Google ratings with.
In my case, I had a bad transcription of the Lyrics to an early 1980s song have a high Google rank score at one point. It was a clearly personal web page. Well, back in 2002, it was one of the first ten links Googling for this particular song. These days, a Google search for this song gives you those sites which have made an ad-filled page with no content for every name in their database, those lyrics sites with too many popups, ads, and spyware (and who have copied my poorly-transcribed lyrics instead of the real lyrics), the Amazon page for this product--but my lyrics page is no where to be found.
Google's goden age has come and gone. Their searches are becoming less relevant and informitive, and big players like Microsoft are butting in to their territory (for people who don't think Microsoft can make an effective search engine: People said Microsoft couldn't make a decent browser in 1996).
These days, Myspace is the place to be (In the USA, that hot chick will have a MySpace page and will give you their MySpace ID); You Tube is a great place to easily get pirated TV content (cool rare 1980s music videos and Dr. Who TV shows, in my case); and DIGG is more relevant than Slashdot (but shares Slashdot's problem of having too many fanboys and flamers). -
Re:Then you haven't used them enough
btw have google opened up interaction with other jabber servers or is it still a closed system.

And to help him on his path to said experience...
... with the American legal system, here is what I wrote as a comment on his blog entry:
Write the decision maker(s) a little love letter. Not a blog post... not an email... a real letter with an address and signature. Carbon copy the administrators, pertinent teachers, the school board, the PTA, your attorney, your parents, the newspaper, etc. etc. You must write, sign, and send this letter (via U.S. Postal Mail) after school hours to ensure the "action" stays "out of school." Here's a little text to get you started:
[your name/address]
[their name(s)/address(es)]
Dear Sir/Madam, (or "Ladies and Gentlemen" if there's more than one)
Thank you for your attention regarding my after-school blog posts on my website at http://www.xanga.com/Heckler3672bro/. I hope this letter sheds some light on the current situation regarding my recent activities on my website. The incident is now internationally known thanks to the power of the Internet. Words of support and suggestions of legal action are pouring in from around the globe on well-known websites like http://digg.com/ and http://slashdot.org/. Several individuals recently brought some very enlightening facts to my attention. Specifically, they were quick to point out that your idle threats of expulsion are baseless. Your feeble attempts to control my extra-curricular behavior are not only illegal from a civil law standpoint, but I have been instructed to investigate filing criminal charges against you for your ridiculous attempts to infringe upon my rights. As it turns out, I could wait until the school day is finished and stand across the street from the school with a big sign reading "I think principal [INSERT PRINCIPAL'S LAST NAME HERE] is a homo", and the principal's only recourse would be to paint a sign saying "I'm not a homo" and stand next to me. Any attempts to quell such activities would be in violation of my right to free speech.
Luckily, this same protection of speech currently applies to the Internet as well. The website in question is my personal site, so I will post whatever I feel like saying. If I want to call the school system "bullies", I will. If I feel like one or more of my teachers or school administrators are acting in a manner unbecoming a professional educator in the employ of the public school system, I will gladly bring this topic to the public eye. Consider me the "National Enquirer" investigative reporter of the school. Regardless of how well I research and write my articles or posts, it doesn't change the fact that this method of expression is completely protected by my rights as a citizen of the United States. This is, of course, provided I do not post during school hours or from a school computer (which I do not).
Since this situation has, until now, been controlled by you or your duly appointed representatives, I am writing to let you know that you are no longer the bully and thus no longer in control. From this point forward, I will be bullying you at a matter and time convenient to me. I will be controlling the situation from this point forward. Hopefully this will allow you more time to concentrate on what it is you're supposed to be doing at the school which is educating your students (as opposed to threatening them). I, after much deliberation and consideration, decided that I will not rest until I destroy the career and livelihood of every culprit involved in this atrocious attack upon my personal freedoms. Your actions will not go unpunished. I intend to seek competent legal counsel and instruct them to fight on my behalf until you, your family (or families), and the school system as a whole are financially destroyed and unable to support themselves. This letter is not a threat. It is simply a notice of what is to come in hopes that it will allow you ample time to prepare yourself and your conscience for the humbling you are about to receive. Please don't feel like any acti -

Re:A review:
The "plot" is just plain weird but we'll excuse that on the basis that there isn't supposed to be any plot (read into the plot what you like but it's not present so you can say that anything "represents" anything you like... I hereby declare that the plot could be about Emo the technophobe not wanting to use the clunky old tech that his father used, in the same way I use CD's where my dad used vinyl).
Just because it was over your head doesn't mean it lacked plot. :) It was definately aimed at a more artsy audience (which was rather refreshing), but you should still be able to figure it out if you think about it for a bit. If you still can't get it, read the reply from 'Brkn' on the digged story and the post he's replying to. http://digg.com/movies/Elephants_Dream,_the_Open_3 D_Animated_Movie_Released_On-line -

Re:A new low
Moreover, this story had already been reported on digg as "Doctors puzzled over bizarre infection surfacing in South Texas", and then marked as Readers have reported that this story contains information that may not be accurate.
For some time I tried to connect to Digg RSS feeds, but found that it passes too many articles for me to be able to read them all; since /. presents less articles, I thought that it would present the best of what I would see on Digg ... but actually, in my opinion, this is not the case: I have seen interesting facts appear on Digg and not on /. , and Very Bogus Stories(tm) appear on Digg, be marked as such, and then appear on /. What /. does best is present facts in a more professional looking way ; you know, Digg is usually too sensational, all those capitals and exclamation marks; The Register enjoys a dry Brit humor that makes the article mostly incomprehensible to me; /. has this cool CNN feeling that makes it sound oh so competent.... unless you start comparing content, then you notice that reviewers are not doing their best jobs lately. I was also surprised, from time to time, to see some posts that were marked as '5 intersting' while being blatantly false , and replies that were just marked 2 when they were correcting the error; this was another shot at my confidence in /. overall competence. -
Also, see....

Re:Are you kidding???
After I hit the submit button I thought 'doh!' I had Battle of Britain on the brain and how interesting a game that was. I did not mean to draw the line in 1941 - 1943 but to say War Games are interesting, and don't seem to exploit the situation near as much as a 'Flight 98' or 'Massacre at Columbine' type of game.
I'd love to see a 'Duck Hunt' type game where you pop terrorists in the head when they pop up. We can call it Whac-A-Terrorist or whatever. Personally in games where I get the most uncomfortable is when you are a terrorist. Command and Conquer generals was one of thsoe. I refused to play the arab line because it was too close to 2001 for me and it goobed me out cranking out suicide bombers. BF2 has gotten better but playing the MEC side still bothers me some times.
Would I want games like this to stop being made? no, I guess not. But at the same time things like Columbine and 9/11/01 and the like are too big of a hot button and too close to the heart of too many vocal people to make a game out of. I mean the recent BF2 flap about the 'Terrorist Recruiting Video'fan made video shows how sensative an issue it is these days. -

Re:Worst Slashdot post in ages
It does seem like every article daria42 submits here att Slashdot or at Digg.com links to zdnet.com.au. It would be nice if (s)he would be a bit more upfront about that, but there's nothing inherently wrong about it. Anyone can submit anything. It's the editors' job to decide which stories get posted.

How accurate is the Register Article?James Robertson suggests that Orlowski mis-reports it again and says that the Register report is a "fairly nasty bit of selective quoting" and was referenced in the DIGG commentary that Google's not full.
With hardware (and bandwidth) getting cheaper, I find it hard to believe that Google has actually run out of space. But certainly the explosion in the number of web pages is an issue, especially with auto-generated pages. One current example is the V7ndotcom Elursrebmem SEO contest (white-hat celiac charity site I'm supporting) - that nonsense phrase returned zero results on January 15th, 2006
... but now returns almost 5,000,000 ... of which I gotta believe the vast majority were NOT typed in by humans. So maybe it's more that the techniques/algorithms used to spider and index are struggling with the bazillions of web pages out there. Or it could just be disgruntled webmasters PO'ed that their web site isn't listed!

Only for U.S. and notes...
... you can get around that with proxies according to Digg (also here). This project is only up for at least a two-month trial period. Full screen is not possible, but there are two different sizes and the quality is excellent (not HDTV quality) on a fast Internet connection at my workplace.
Don't forget to leave feedbacks for ABC on this project! Let them know what you think of it! It is also missing two of my other TV shows (Invasion and Grey's Anatomy). So, I left a request and a positive comment for ABC via its feedback.
I wonder if there is a way to set the Flash video to fullscreen onto my TV as a video overlay? I do this with Windows' Media Players, VideoLAN Client Media Player, DVD players, etc. I don't have to set the players to fullscreen, just the video out. -

Re:Watch it, enjoy it, believe it
And sadly enough the press is ignoring it. If you search front page stories at Digg.com - you'll find the same story has made it to the front page of digg three times in the last day and a half - and each story has been buried.
I'm not suggesting a conspiracy, just fear from Bush supporters to allow criticism of Bush. I'm conservative, and I have some major reservations with Bush - but too many of my GOP friends really can't stand discussion. It is too bad that news agencies are too afraid to print accurate criticisms. Though with all the NSA wiretapping and executive gag orders who can blame them? -
