Google is the all-seeing-eye of the internet
Is it just me... or does anyone else find having this banner avert at at the top of this story funny, and a little bit creepy:

It links here if you're interested:

Opting out
Opt out of major advertising networks: http://www.networkadvertising.org/managing/opt_out.asp Opt out of doubleclick/google ads: http://optout.doubleclick.net/cgi-bin/optoutgoogle.pl

Re:No problem. So what's the alternative?
So far, I've got:
http://track.pubmatic.com/* http://m1.2mdn.net/* http://view.atdmt.com/* http://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/* http://content.yieldmanager.edgesuite.net/* http://cdn5.tribalfusion.com/media/* http://online-pro-antivirus-scan.com/*
The last one is the most obnoxious. It's a full animated windows file explorer showing a fake virus scan (positive of course). It's kinda funny to watch it on a Linux machine though but it's a bit difficult to get it to close and stay closed.

Re:BFD(?)Yeah, first off, the link showed me an ad for the new "Choke" movie. That made me think of choking chickens.
Then, as luck would have it, I get an ad for more flexible screwing when I hit the reply button. Well, what more do you need to get you going?

Re:Why is this news?
I noticed that the download of slashdot webpages would be delayed by some strange link to
http://www.google-analytics.com/ga.js
http://www.ad.doubleclick.net/adj/ostg.slashdot/yro_p1_leader;logged_in=1;dcopt=....
You can check this by clicking on Adblock in Firefox.
I do wonder if this allows doubleclick.net to see past "anonymous coward" postings.

Re:May be something good will come out of this.
No, that's crap.
Firefox does not block popups generated by Windows. It only blocks popups generated by websites, and even then, it's not really *blocking* them, it's just refusing to run that bit of code.
Website: "Please open a new window, size 400x320, and load http://www.doubleclick.net/advertisement.gif in it."
Firefox: "No. Bugger off."
Unless the popups are coming from the Firefox browser itself (which they won't be, in this patent... it says "OS level"), then Firefox will not be infringing. -
WTF
Got a popup on SLASHDOT of all sites. Opera said it came from this tab, too.
Here's what popped up:

Which is worse? China or DoubleClickHelp decide whether helping China with censorship or buying DoubleClick is worse.

Re:Priorities
Parts of this planet we live on don't even have access to a broadband Internet connection, and now they want to plug Mars on the network? Talk about priorities...
Have you considered the reason why some countries are fantastically wealthy, safe, and comfortable, while their next-door neighbors wallow in hungry squalor? Never mind the flukes -- can you see an overall pattern?
Hint: it's all about the social pattern established there. Some patterns create better incentives than others. By now, only a fool or a liar can fail to see the benefit of market-driven economies (even allowing for their frequent ugly hiccups).
NASA, as a facility for transferring federal money to specific congressional districts, is committed to the wrong sort of social pattern. After all, its very survival requires it to support any pork-barrel scheme that benefits it... or at least, to remain mute on a subject that no one should remain mute on. And so NASA cannot seriously advocate for free-market social patterns, as would be needed to bring broadband to the masses you quietly scream your love for.
In fact it was only last year that NASA offically reversed its policy of criticizing private space ventures. The times, they're a changin' for the better.

People who post links like

Firefox AdblockI use Adblock with Firefox, but I only use it to block particular annoying ads. The ads on slashdot, for instance, are relatively unobtrusive, and don't flash or anything that would drive me to block it. When I do block an ad, I'll generally put a * somewhere pretty early in the string (such as http://ad.doubleclick.net/*), so anything from the obnoxious advertiser gets blocked. As soon as the advertiser puts up one obnoxious ad, I'm done with them.
Spam is another thing entirely. Some spam is advertisements, but when I look in my GMail spam folder half the crap I get doesn't make any sense at all. Looking at some of this, I don't even know what it's trying to tell me or advertise for.
Lumping advertisements (TV, Web, Radio, billboards, etc) with spam (e-mail) is silly. If you're blocking advertisements that come with a service you're using, you're affecting the income generated by the service your using. If you're blocking spam, you're avoiding completely senseless, unsolicited, unwanted junk that you have not done anything to receive.

Re:The fix is easy
For example, I never will visit ad.doubleclick.net
I know: no doctype, unclosed tags, unquoted attributes. That site sucks. -

Re:Metrics
How do you propose that websites detect the use of an adblocker? (Without seriously degrading the user experience)
Easy, turn your content into flat image files and host them http://doubleclick.net/ so that *.doublick.net/* ad block wild cards will block out the desired content. Err... Well... As long as you don't think that having to read pages of jpegs to be a dragrading experience. -

Re:My reasons
Right on. I always install Adblock with Firefox or Mozilla. I haven't seen a pop-up or flash advertisement for months. They all seem to come from a few advertisers. Here is my adblock list:

I did that but it removes all the cr/lfs from the file. But what do you know it works fine here. Some of mine are redundant but it seems two work pretty well for me. YMMV

I loaded up this article and what do I see?
This ad from Microsoft staring back at me. -
ADS IN FRESHMEAT SIDEBAR. What. The. Hell.
WHAT ARE ADS DOING IN THE FRESHMEAT LINKS!!?!?!
I'm not usually one to complain loudly, having gotten used to having to use all the latest tools to avoid the commercialisation of the internet. But seriously. What the F*ck! I saw the following link in slashdot's Freshmeat sidebar, titled 'ADV: Gimme Shelter':
[http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;11713776;10469304 ;d ?http://infoworld.com/spotlights/sbc/main.html?lpi d0101035400730402idlp]
This is disgusting. I expect sidebars titled with a well-known domain to be -actually pointing to links on that domain-, not TROJANED with ads.
Someone on the /. editors panel explain this, pronto. What sleazy new low is this? -

The beast and the little guy.
"Besides the likely efficacy questions, concerns in the scientific community concern what impact this will have on our foreign collaborations (or even grad students)."
My two cents: This PIV system is going worldwide. People will have to deal with it whether they are ready or not.
The graphic http://m2.doubleclick.net/908910/cbd_336x280.gif with the main topic, brought to mind some things I heard, about a False Prophet, a Beast, and the Antichrist. I know sounds like the start to some bad joke but it's true, it did remind me.
In the Apocalypse prophecy "everyone" is required to recieve a marked number on their right hand or forehead. Some don't, though. The most immeadiate consequence to them is death like those in Fallujah, or maybe they can't buy or sell...
Those are just a couple of the consequences for citizens to not conforming to the system. I admit a worst case senario. However If there is a 50-50 chance that something can go wrong, then 9 times out of ten it will. Already we see the problems: What benefit is there for a criminal/terrorist who wants to off himself/someone and get away with whatever? like you I think none.
Like another previous poster pointed out there is a critical mass in England of "non-thinkers" who don't percieve or know how the a national PIV system is going to really work against them, and so rush headlong to disaster.
Honestly though, blaming us Americans for something that we have no control over, our "Globalist Masters" lead us too, is not right. Individually or even in small "thinker" numbers there is nothing effective we could do to fight a system on national levels when it comes around for us either. But die I suppose.
I don't want to be PIVed it violates my privacy. :D

Those Microsoft brains must be working really hard... just look at the Slashdot advertisements that are running with this story.
MS's "Get the Facts"

Forgive this somewhat offtopic point, but..
Why has the popular percetpion of the "Gamer" been composed of bratty MTV esque focus group, as seen in this 1up sight, and on the G4 TechTV channel?

What the hell is up with OSDN???
Why is Slashdot running this crap from Microsoft?
It's a Microsoft ad that was attached to this story. It claims that Windows 2003 had better performance and beat every configuration of Red Hat. Why does Slashdot run this FUD?

Seriously, go with the original energy drink. My favorite coffee shop in town, Comet, sells something called a speedball (same thing as Alterra's redeye...) its a cup of house strong with two shots of espresso in it, that'll wake you up before class. Comet also sells something called a switchblade, which IIRC is a pint of mocha with 4 shots in it, Mmm.

Perfect AdThat's got to be the most perfect ad-to-article match ever. The interview contains these paragraphs:
"The root problem that the security industry has is
And the ad on the page says "Today's threats require a lot more than a firewall. This is a lot more than a firewall. Symantec Gateway Security 5400 series" (Ad here.) ... unscrupulous people selling to an uninformed market. The managers buying security products don't understand security at all, and so they trust the vendors to tell them what is best," Alder argued. "And somehow, conveniently, what is best has a great overlap with whatever that particular vendor happens to be selling."...
"[Companies] have the latest and greatest firewall that nobody has ever bothered to configure, or a very expensive intrusion detection system (IDS) that nobody has the understanding to tune."
That's about the most perfect example of what she's talking about anybody could have come up with...
