Re:Import Zausrus
you can get the SL-C860 from brando.com.hk in Hong Kong, but it comes set up for Japanese. There are sites to help you convert it to English. Or, order it from dynamism.com and while there check out the new SL-C3000. Of course, eBay is your friend...

We also had problems with Promise Technology.
Responding to your sig: "PromiseUltra100CardOfDeath"
We had perhaps 10 Promise controllers, and could not make them work under Windows XP. They work fine under Windows 98.
It is possible that Microsoft has done something to make software/hardware RAID controllers like Promise fail under Windows XP. That would mean more people would buy Windows Server. We tried another software/hardware RAID mirroring controllers, from HighPoint, and they had the same problem.
We also were not able to get any meaningful technical support from Promise Technology, even after months of asking. -
Yeah but will theyMatch the price on my Apple

Who knows how long the photos will stay up, but if you do a completed-items search on "Regency TR-1" you'll find several other examples.

Not nearly as cool as my Barbie computer...
Agreed this is marketed more at pre-adolescents, but if that is your target audience, why buy a Barbie Computer for $70?
I love mine. I paid $60 for it several years ago and slapped in a $20 stick of 256 MB SDRAM and a 30 GB hard drive. It still has the flower decals and everything. Plus, it has a nifty handle and lightening-fast onboard i810 video and modem. It works fine for email and light web surfing. Its hostname is Klaus (as in Klaus Barbie).
Klaus doesn't have any PCI slots, though. I have to use a USB ethernet adapter. Does this rig have an PCI slots? -
Why Reinvent the wheel?
I'm having trouble understanding what's so complex about this? 1. buy old iMac $100 2. Buy 60GB HardDrive and install into iMac $50 3. Rip 650 CDs into iTunes 4. Share Music Folder & Library and Attach to Network $150 and about 30 minutes of time. Where's the confusion?

XMPCR is another way of saying
a $250 profit
the XMPCR is a little box that allows you to listen to XM radio on your pc/mac/sun (mac/sun supported by 3rd party apps). it's a little box that has an audio out which you simply plug in to your mic or line-in. it's controlled via usb (the unit internally has a usb->serial adapter which happens to be well supported by *bsd, linux, etc).
the protocol that goes over the usb cable (used to change channels, etc) was reverse engineered, and people started making all sorts of applications to play with them. timetrax is one that allows you to record the music, as well as automatically add the title, artist, etc info to the ripped song -

Re:Why Apple won't do that?
Why not look for a used Apple system on eBay? Do you need a brand new computer? You can get a flat-panel iMac with a lot of additional software for around $500.

All your userbase are bel... what userbase again?
First, while IE/Mac isn't supported anymore, there are some people who still use it.
Do Safari, IE/Mac, iCab, OmniWeb, and other Mac-only web browsers constitute enough userbase to persuade a small business to fork over four figures for a decent Mac OS X machine?
As long as it has a userbase, there's a reason to test it.
<sarcasm>There's still an Apple II userbase.</sarcasm> How much of a userbase is worth how much developer time and money?
there are still Safari improvements that aren't in Konqueror
So if you have the latest release of Konqueror, or whatever they call their equivalent to Mozilla's nightly build, you'll probably have the improvements from Safari one or two versions back. How up-to-date do most Safari users keep their installations? And are there really a lot of significant rendering differences between KHTML-based Safari and a Gecko-based browser?
Last time I tried it tho, KDE-Cygwin was slow and buggy as hell
I'd guess that it's a lot cheaper for a small business to buy and maintain a cheapass Linux box (either this way or this way or even this way) than to buy and maintain a Mac.

Thinking outside the box/room.
Don't try to create the mythical and impossibly expensive silent pc. There no point. Just move the PC outside the living room.
Just cough up those $50 on a AV wireless transmitter and receiver and put your PC in the utility room.

Re:Most importantly
If you're looking for a bag that does not at all look like a notebook bag, I'd suggest one of the samsonite backpacks that double up for carrying notebooks.
You can get one off eBay for about $25.
They have two compartments, one for the notebook and one for other things. It's really comfortable, easy to carry around and very weildy. I travel a lot, too, and it's been really great.
It's been more than a year since I got mine, and it's in top notch condition. Very highly recommended. -
3Com Audrey
As cool as this hack is, and I personally think it is pretty cool, for my money an old 3Com Audrey makes a much better media system UI. The Audrey is a diskless "internet appliance" from a few years ago that failed in the market. Originally about $500, they are now commonly available on EBay for about $80-90. The screen is larger and you can do a lot more things with it.
The Audrey looks like a Jetsons style Etch-a-sketch. It was designed to sit on the kitchen table and do email, read the morning news, look up recipes on the Internet, stuff like that. It has has a 7" diagonal 640x480 color touch screen, wireless keyboard, some specialized buttons on the front, 2 USB ports, built in speakers, microphone and audio jack. There is no disk drive; it uses 32 Mb RAM and a 32 Mb Compact Flash card that holds the OS (QNX, an embedded microkernel).
A thriving Audrey hacking community has evolved; people have replaced the original software with things like mp3 players, a better web browser, home automation stuff, etc. I own five of them, which I use to stream music all over the house. The tiny built-in speakers are crappy but the sound card is decent, and sounds fine plugged into a stereo or boom box. My winter project is going to be to implement a home intercom system using my network of Audreys. I can't say enough good things about this cool toy! -
Re:How can I put this nicely
You needed IE6 to use eBay? Odd. eBay recommends IE 5.5 or above, or the "latest" version of Netscape, which I guess means any recent Gecko version. Neither Netscape or Opera are guaranteed to work, though, although personally it has always worked fine for me with both - must've been a fairly obscure feature.

This is Bigger
Check this out.
Huge auctions like these are futile, rarely would anyone ever put up that much money all at once for a gigantic collection.
Parting these things out into sets would probably work better (and hell, I'd go after a few if I could.) -
Not as bad as this guy
All that stuff for $5k looks like a good deal to me if you were into the stuff.
Not as bad as this moron expecting $12,000US for an early mac...

What happened to RedStorm?
Cray not-too-long-ago had major announcements with the RedStorm project. I believe that system is supposed to be a single image 10,000 CPU AMD based rig. There are some oddities friends have pointed out, like the OS is based on IRIX I believe...
Yea check this out:
Cray Unicos/mp"
Actually that references the X1, which is not based on PeeCee stuff, but actually a 8 core MPM.
Sad thing is, even with Red Storm I think IBM will remain on top as their contract calls for 130,000 of their powerPCs on one system?
It would be nice to see Cray on top, with something other than a commoditiy processors. I realize the T3D and T3E were both Alpha based systems.
PS, I still have a J932se 32 proc Vector Cray ( for sale ) if anyone wants a Cray for home. $4500, real deal 3 cabinet Cray from 97', most likely used for gov't nuclear energy something-or-other. Located in Southeastern Virginia.

Re:Sorta Newton related...
I was in the same boat as you about this time last year and I ended up settling with a smaller screen and went with the HP iPaq 5555. Good PDA, but the screen is a bit on the small side.
You might want to check out the old Fujitsu Stylistic line of tablet PCs. I've heard good things about them from some of the people I work with. A fully loaded used one can be had for under $350 (450MHz range). -
Re:Klutsy?Did you ever notice that the popular website names often have nothing to do with what they are really are ?. of course they in turn get added to the vocabulary... but see the examples.
- Google -- a huge number , and nothing to do with searching, per se
- Amazon -- WTF does Amazon have to do with book, rather supply the wood ?
- Monster -- Monster ?. and jobs ?.
- Ebay would BuyHere.com sounded better ?
- Slashdot what does "Slashdot" mean actually ?. "Slashdotted" ? (ok, sourceforge makes sense for one).

Nothing special
Kenneth Cole Reaction wallet, bi-fold. Flap on the left with three card slots on front, slot w/ window on the back (so I can do that cool flip-open-ID-showing thing), attached to one the left side of the inner part of the actual billfold itself. Also attached to the inner part are two sets of four horizontal slots for cards, one on the left and one on the right. There are two slots behind these, one behind each set of four.
It looks like this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&cate gory=2996&item=8134827342&rd=1#ebayphotohostin g
Except the thread is black (what the hell is up with that white? gross).
The actual billfold holds mostly receipts and bankslips, as I rarely carry cash. Other contents: Mini-diploma from HS, drivers license, two bank/debit cards, student advantage card, library card, Democratic National Committee card, and another membership card I'd rather not name. Also, a business card for a member of my honors thesis committee. Also, on occasion, the phone number of a prospective date. -

Re:IP phone recommendations? We liked the Polycom IP500 so much we became dealers! We tried everything we could get our hands on for about 10 months and by far we were most satisfied with the IP500.
Once you get past the XML configs, it's clear sailing. The default settings for most of the buttons just work great with * (eg. hold, transfer, xfer to vm, dnd, forward).
Mic and speaker quality are both superb. We have a phone in SF in a conf. room on the 6th floor that we monitor (across the net about an hour away)...we can actually hear people yelling at each other in the street quite clearly (there is alot of honking and brakes screeching that goes on too
:)The soft buttons are meaningful, and the sip interoperability with * seems flawless. You will not be disappointed.
If you're interested, you can visit our goofy Ebay store..mention that it's for Asterisk for even better pricing
:). Cheers..Todd http://stores.ebay.com/OurPhoneBooth/ -
awesome player
If you can find one of these, get one. It comes out of your car and plugs in as a mass storage device(not 802.11b). They were linux based IIRC and sonicblue bought them if I'm not mistaken and they stopped making them and made "Rio Car" which is also not anywhere to be found new.
This looks awesome too though.

Re:Mixed feelings
There simply isn't any good volcanic ash around Mt. St. Helens to see if the volcanic ash from that specific volcanic chain would be as good. From a geek standpoint, it would make a great experiment, but does require the volcano to blow up first.
EBay to the Rescue! I figured there'd be some there- everybody I knew collected a jar before the rain started. -
Re:Super FASTER Dual-Layer DVD Writing
I bought an external USB IDE cable with an AC power supply off of ebay for $22 including shipping.
It allows you to connect any IDE drive to a USB port (supports USB 1.1 and 2.0) and use it as an external. It also includes the adapter to use 2.5" (notebook) harddrives.
It's not nearly as pretty as a fancy external case, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper.
Here's one guy who's selling them without the 2.5" drive adapter. The guy I bought from doesn't seem to have any listed right now.
Word of warning: the one I bought stoppped working after about a week. I opened the blue end of the cable (IDE connector) that houses the circuit board and it was one of the ugliest by-hand soldering jobs I'd ever seen. The solder was dull and gray and there was some sort of salt build up on the entire board. Thankfully where I work we have an electronics lab and competent people who provided me with the proper equipment to clean it up and touch up the solder points. After that it has worked fine. -
PCB, FPGA, component resources
For PCBs, be sure to check out Barebones. I've done a couple of runs through them, including one involving a chip-scale BGA package, and they did a great job. They're really a front for one of the previously-mentioned PCB operations, Advanced Circuits. For FPGA and CPLD prototyping, definitely go to Digilent. I've bought a few products from them and have been consistently impressed. Finally, it's probably an obvious choice, but eBay is always a good resource too. Many deals can be had in the "Electronic Components" category of their "Business & Industrial" section.

Dells for DOS?It would seem that even an old VT100 would have sufficed,
A thrift store near me has their POS running a dos program in window mode on some very nice hardware (but a pretty bad OS
:).Ok, so I don't shop there very much, but I keep thinking those people are wasting their money. Why, they could just go on ebay and get a few '386s and load freedos on them.

Re:Holding out for the in-car ogg playerI have seen a lot of the in-car CD based mp3 players for around $150 at Fry's, but I have never seen one that supports ogg. I know there is the music keg, but I'm looking for something cheap. Is there anything like that on the market yet? It sure would be cool if one of these could play from DVD-R media as well.
Just buy a 10GB music keg off of eBay for around $160. 10GBs of Ogg...sure it's not a lot, but it gives you the Vorbis support you want and doesn't break the bank (some of those are factory refurbs, but apparently the hard drives are replaced with new ones when they go back).
This is also a cheaper alternative to *eyeroll* building your own like some will suggest. -

Sony; Too much to protect
Probably because they realized that technology and software can be too easily circumvented for any media to remain safe from unsanctioned sharing of music. Since they are not strictly an electronics company anymore, it's probably a can of worms they didn't even want to come close to opening, especially given how easy it is for MP3 to be copied and transfered.
Of course, they could have easily looked at it from the other angle and locked in their customer base (and whatever DRM they wanted) from the ground floor if they had tackled the issue aggressively from the beginning. It is rather ironic that everybody else is now doing the the very thing they did with the CD player. They went from an agrressive cutting edge technology seeker (and still are in some areas) to an overly cautious monolithic company who thinks they have too much to protect when it comes to radical technology. In this case, they were the latter and it cost them. Sony could have easily been the iPod with their reputation for innovation and design.
Speaking of digital MP3 players, feel free to bid on my 256mb Flash MP3 Player w/FM tuner and voice recorder! ^_^ -
Re: Re:Hollywood lives in a fantasy landMAYBE priacy will become an issue when home theaters can be put into our private homes at low cost. And that is a big maybe.
I don't know how much exactly "cheap" means for you, but I just searched a bit on ebay and you can get stuff like this and this under 1000$. If you search deeper you will find even cheaper.
I have more or less the same configurations. It works better than buying an expensive new Flatscreen or Plasma TV.

Watered steel blade
Dovetailing nicely with this review, an antique katana of "Damascus steel" has recently gone up for auction on eBay. Readers of the Baroque Trilogy will be familiar with watered steel after wading through dozens of pages of Stephenson's discourse on its nature and origin. If you'd like to see what watered steel looks like for yourself, check it out!
