Re:Seems a bit redundant
Hey man! Don't diss the Slime Pit! That single toy is responsible for every fetishitic impulse in the United States since 1985!:)
Also, I think the device (that the article speaks of) is marvelous but there are many other issues like it probably ushering in the end of the last well-paying joe jobs left in the US. after the construction industry is mostly gone due to this machine's more adept descendents, what then? federally mandated burger-flipper jobs...er, crap, robots will be doing that...federally mandated high paying service jobs....damn, RFID blew that one outta the water...crap.

Buy an iTunes gift certificate off ebay?
It's marked up a little though. I still don't quite understand what the big deal is about ripping cd's. It takes only a couple minutes to rip and. Putting on a pair of shoes is a bigger hassle. New music is not "often" protected as stated in the AS; in my experience it rarely is. If it is, they probably don't deserve your patronage anyway. -
Re:This may sound stupid but....
the RIAA allows iTMS, but the EURIAA equivilent has not yet cut a deal. So go to ebay, buy american giftcerts, winning pepsi codes, or prepaid cards using paypal (so you don't need a US CC number) and have fun. eBay

Scrapping Hubble
They are not scrapping Hubble because of cost. The NASA Administrator stated that the reason was due to "the risk to the astronauts on a Hubble mission and President Bush's plans to send humans to the moon, Mars and beyond as the reason for NASA's change of focus." In fact, the planned upgrade has been built, tested and (most importantly) PAID FOR. It's just setting there waiting to be taking to the telescope and installed.

Re:1964 World Book -- Want a copy?
If you're feeling nostalgic, you could always grab a copy from Ebay.
Newer versions (2001ish) go for about $270 including shipping on Ebay. The newest version direct from World Book is $1100.

Re:In Other News...
and, the sale of horse carriages absolutely plumited (sp?) after the adoption of the car. I wanted to buy one and searched on google and only found these links.
But more seriously. Enclyclopeias were never much of a reference to begin with. I don't think they were accepted in my schooling past 3rd or 5th grade as a citable source. They had generic information, little current information except for the update's that you could buy each year.
Granted I did look at them when I was a kid, but if I had a kid today, I would supervise him/her on the internet instead.
Good bye encyclopedias and horse carriages! Next topic. -

Obviously...
The article says, "It can relieve headaches." Isn't that just plain obvious. Especially considering that the most common headache relieved by coffee is in fact caused by caffeine withdrawl.
Besides that, this article is obviously lacking in supporting information. What did this "scientific" study involve? Was this simply a look at the components of coffee: antioxidants, tannin, etc? Or was it a double blind study that looked at the long term effects of 4 cups a day?

Rumor has it that in the special edition Sauron swings at Aragorn first. No way would Aragorn have let Sauron swing first! And don't tell my that Aragorn was acting in self-defense. I just don't buy that... and I won't buy the DVD either.

Re:Copland, or the real MacOS 8
I'm well aware of A/UX! Though I'm not sure how it relates to your point.
I run A/UX 3.1 on a Quadra 800. I have the original installation disks and a full set of manuals, plus the "A/UX Handbooks" by Jan Harrington. I even have the Mac OS 8 Revealed book you mentioned.
Although Apple was still selling A/UX when Copland was canned, they had no plans to port it to PPC. IBM already had AIX for PowerPC machines, and Apple was adamant about developing their own "modern" pre-emptive Mac OS without parroting UNIX. There just wasn't any real demand for a "Mac-like" UNIX. Not to mention A/UX (with associated AT&T licensing fees) was horrendously expensive. The folks who bitch about the $130 price of Mac OS X should take a look at the price of commercial UNIX products circa 1994. IMHO, Panther would be a bargain at $500.

Whole bunch of other sites:

There used to be a really good one out there I used as a resource when I was trying to figure out how to move the images from my PC through the serial port to my Apple //e to write them to the Disk II. If anyone remembers what I'm talking about please link under this post (it showed a boot screen on the homepage then it redirected to their homepage).
Thanks! Hope these links help.
Oh and of course if you want to buy old stuff (as I have done) there is always eBay (They suck by the way because they used to have an Apple II section but it's gone now.) -

cheap webcams
I haven't done much (OK, anything) with GnomeMeeting or Video4Linux. A bit of googleing (googling?) doesn't turn up what I'm looking for so I thought I'd post here while people are still reading comments because I think I have a common question/desire.
Ebay has tons of my favorite computer, Compaq Deskpro SFFs, with USB and PII/350-PIII/500 CPUs for <$100 every day of the week. I'd love to be able to buy one (or a lot of 10) and add a cheap USB webcam (Logitech QuickCam Messengers are $50 at Circuit City this week, with $20 in rebates, for just one example) and make, basically, a videophone appliance. Hell, I don't even care if it does sound (I'm happy to use a landline for that) but I'd love to have cheap, consistant, decent-quality, OSS, easy-to-use-with-a-firewall* videoconferencing solution. Just something that I can do a basic install of $DISTRO, add GnomeMeeting, an el-cheapo webcam, and have it work. Kinda like buying an eMac and an iSight but $800 cheaper.
So, I guess my question is, does anyone know of a cheap, readily-available USB webcam that works with GnomeMeeting? Following that, is there a distro that works well with the above, out-of-the-box or close to? And can all this be done with only a handful of open TCP ports? My #1 concern is getting video back and forth.
* as in, no "open ports 1024-65,535" like NetMeeting wants.
(And please don't reply talking about how great iChat is. I know it's great but I can't to spend $1,000 on every member of my family just yet.) -

Re:Finally
I agree. I've been using Audacity (actually its commercial equivalent, Luxuriousity Audio) for a few months now. It really blows all other software out of the market. I can mix together all the tracks for my nationally-syndicated radio show, "Seth Finklestein's Cybersecurity Update and Top 40 Countdown" and then encode the results in high-quality codices like Ogg Vorbis.
In conclusion, Audacity gets the Seth Finklestein seal of approval.
Sincerely,

Give credit where credit is due.
Recently on eBay, I found a piece of software called Luxuriousity Audio. It does everything that Audacity does, and more! For only $9.99, you get high-quality compact disc recordable media, an e-paper manual, and community-supported forums for support!
I'd highly recommend Luxuriousity Audio to my followers and colleagues. You can also buy it using eBay, the world's favourite auction house.
Thank you for your time. Please send me money.
Sincerely,
Seth Finklestein

Have you considered eBay?
If you were considering PC-based scopes just to get the cost down, perhaps you might consider an actual used oscilloscope. There are many used ones for sale on eBay, and there appear to be some that would more than fit your criteria. For example, this one.
-
It's at the top of your range
This looks like a decent hardware version of what you wanted, they say it takes a bit of time to warm up, but you can't beat the price. Oh and hardware o-scopes rule, but cost a ton. There are lots of other o-scopes for sale on ebay. It's one of the few tech areas that seems to have some regular bargains, that and old workstations from anyone other than SGI, who has more sex appeal than apple.
-
Did you look all that hard?
It is not difficult to find a veritable mount of cheap oscilloscopes on eBay. You say you only need it for demonstration purposes, so why do you need something shiny and new? It can even be argued that the older analog oscilloscopes are better than newer digital ones. As always, resort to eBay if you need something not so good, and fairly cheap. Chances are you can find it there.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
Thanks for all the responses folks, I really appreciate it.
I was surprised, and happy, to see the link to that big Gateway monitor (too bad for WA only).. I've never seen monitors over 21-22" before, and even those are usually mondo-expensive and aimed towards graphic designers and so forth.
I'm not sure yet whether I'm gonna have to set him up with a real big monitor/TV or depend on software for magnification/text to speech because we're not sure how bad his vision is going to get. . he went from being a regular glasses-wearer to near blind in like a week, was kind of scary. Makes me really value my health at this point.
Anyway thanks for all the suggestions, got to run to class so haven't been able to follow around all the links but I'll get around to it. Thanks!
P.S. Also, I appreciate the idea of the big keyboards.. I've seen them in my googling, but hadn't really thought much of them. But I don't think me dad ever learned to touch-type as well as he should have by this point, so he could probably use one of them. -
Duh..

Very large monitors are available cheaply...
Gateway sold a line of large monitors such as this 31" presentation monitor on ebay. It's only 640x480, but at this point he needs size, not resolution. Also a low resolution will help with applications that don't provide large sizes. I believe they also sold a 34" 800x600. You can get them on surplus places every so often. Shouldn't be more than $300, if that, for one in good shape.
Note also that sometimes people who are losing their sight need brightness more than size, and a very bright screen, such as a presentation monitor, might be a better solution than simply buying a larger screen. Also make sure that webpage colors are overridden by the browser, and don't show background images.

Musicians and Royalty-Free Sampling
They're supposed to obtain approval from the orignal artist. Often it's easier to simply re-record the same bass line or drum beat themselves to avoid copyright problems like that rapper did with the police "I'll be watching you" bass line a few years back used in the tribute song to the other rapper that was killed in a stupid east vs. west rapper feud. (Vague enough for you?)
Most electronic musicians avoid the hassle by buying huge collections of royalty-free samples. There's a whole industry built up around it. Funny, I'm selling a huge collection of 19 Sample CDs for making electronic music right now on eBay.

Uptime
Seems like this would be a great thing. How often has your power gone out versus your cable/dsl line. Power companies are uber-dedicated to providing power to their customers 24/7. And when the power is out they are all over it right away... unlike the cable company.

HP Capshare
I can't believe nobody's mentioned the HP CapShare.

I was doing some consulting for a lawyer in 1999, and he showed me some 'new' HP scanner he just got for some outrageous price. He told me they didn't even have it in the stores/catalogs. It was a very 'James Bond' device, you could swipe it over a large page, and the image was automatically stitched together. You could store/view pages on the scanner, or send them to an HP printer or a laptop via IR. Very cool.
eBay has a couple of them for sale.
