SCO invoice eBay Watch!
Nothing here yet, but maybe someone will auction off photocopies of his SCO invoice.
Better yet, just scan it, save as a PDF, put it up on your webserver, we'll slashdot the hell out of it (and a couple hastily-assembled mirrors too), print out the invoice, do our duty and send a whole big load of crap SCO's way... -
Gettysburg again
Sorry to respond twice, but for the hell of it I just did a search at eBay, and sure enough, someone is selling a copy:
Gettysburg 1964 edition for sale
The box is nearly identical to the one my parents have (a 1950s edition also available at eBay is in fact identical), so I guess it's older than I thought.
Cheers,
Ethelred

Used vs. New Prices
There is always a difference between used and new prices. The same site you mentioned has a few generators for sale for ~$100/kW. However, none below $400. However, I am sure you can find some, if you are trying to find a used/surplus one. There are a few on Ebay as I am posting this. Good luck!
You are correct in that electric generators are a "mature" technology. I've always been of the opinion that there is no such thing as a "mature" technology, only a stagnant one, but until I come up with a cheaper electric motor design, I'm only talking out my ass. With current designs and copper prices, electric motors are about as cheap as they are going to get. However, they are still more expensive than IC engines for any human size+ power scale. Better magnets are going to help, but I think the diesel engine is still improving faster than the dynamo.
My point earlier was that just because something is made of electronics, does not mean that it will be cheap. There is no Moore's Law in power electronics. Ever buy a 30 kW diode? Not cheap. I work for a company that makes little electronic boxes that sell for $22,500. Nuclear Instrumentation is also not cheap, but for different reasons. Electronics have become much better at handling information in our modern age, but for many other things, they are slightly better versions of what we had in the sixties.
I think the reason people have become so complacent about electricity supplies is that we have had it so good for so long. People rely upon it because they can. Not buying a generator to keep the gas pumps running was a good financial bet for 20+ years, and probably will be for the next 20+ years. -
Re:Forum?
If you're looking to buy used, there's already something like that you can use no matter what school you go to.
-
No.
What you are looking for is consumer-to-consumer sales software. This is often done with an auction model. However, most technologies to do C2C are patented out the you-know-whatse in many jurisdictions, either by eBay or by the latest holding company to sue eBay.

Re:Market effectsActually I'm comparing retail price to what you can get for it from anyone. I spent several months trying ebay, classified ads and word of mouth before I finally found the dealer that I mentioned in my previous post. Just as an example, I'll show you what ebay is like. Look at this ebay auction that ended a few hours ago. It's a
.89 carat princess cut diamond with F/G color and SI1/SI2 clarity. It's set in white gold with .37 carats of baguettes surrounding it. The ring went for $956.72.Then go to this site and do a search for
.89 carat princess cut diamonds with the same color and clarity as above. You'll find the price range in between $2200 and $3000 without a setting or additional stones. That means that the ring went for about 31% to 44% of retail. Once again, I'm comparing the price of the ring to just a stone, without a setting or additional stones.I realize that this is only one example, but my research said that this was actually on the high end of the norm.
And just in case you want to talk about appraisals, the "value" you get from an appraisal is the "estimated cost to replace," not the "value" of the stone/piece.
I'd be interested in seeing facts that indicate that diamonds have some real worth, but almost every non-DeBeer's source I have seen points to the artifical demand created by the cartel to drive up prices.

Re:Solve times
Sub-3 minute times aren't too hard with a little practice. I have "The Simple Solution to Rubik's Cube" (not my auction, just the first link to the book I found).
As you can see from the picture, it's barely a book--more of a pamphlet. There aren't more than a couple dozen algorithms in the whole thing, and I don't think more than 8 or 10 possible positions you have to look for at any one stage.
The plan here is to get you solving the puzzle by minimizing the number of cubes you're positioning at once and so minimizing the number of possible combinations to memorize.
I've topped out at a little under 2 minutes, and I'd bet even with a good, well-oiled cube this method tops out at over a minute. The short-comings of this method really show when you get to the last 4 cubes to place. There's basically one configuration that leads to the solution. And you repeat a short series of moves until the last four cubes are in that configuration.
It wastes time, but you only need to memorize 1 configuration--the solvable one--and 2 series of moves--1 to solve and 1 to rearrange.
I thought sub-minute times were world-class, but I had no idea how much had been done sub-30 seconds. I think a question better than vi or emacs is top-down or bottom-up.

Re:Not exactly....Hamilton Beach still makes a sweet all-metal milkshake mixer available for sale right here.
Sorry, I didn't look at your link till after I posted. You have pointed it out very clearly here, the $219 machine that is supposed to be "quality" is a _commercial_ product, _not_ a consumer product.
Here's the current state of affairs in this regard.
With all the charm of the originals,
Something the one you linked to doesn't have, yet this one is almost all plastic, ugh.
This is how things were made back then, solid, he's asking $80+ for 50 year old kitchen appliance, now let's see how much the modern version is "worth"
Also, if you notice, that mixer end piece for the new one is plastic, where as the older one has 2 mixing end pieces (one part way up the shaft) and both are stainless steel.
Now you can say what you like about how expensive all the metal is and all that, but if everyone made them this way, then the price probably wouldn't be much different.
The point is, this is just how stuff was made back then. How stuff is made now is to be thrown away in a few years, yes you can buy quality, but back then you didn't have to pay a premium for it.

I'm a DP'er... (Digital Presser?) Joe, the guy that owns that nice video game setup, is one of the guys behind the Classic Gaming Expo that was held in Las Vegas for the past few years. He's big into the scene and really knows his stuff. He's the editior in cheif of the Digital Press Collectors guide. The guide shows the rarity and dollar values they believe older games are worth. DP is
/.'ed now so I can't provide a link to the guide. He does sell the guide at a few places besides the dp site. Ebay is one of them :)

IBM Ebay Store
Get yourself a great deal on a new, but overstock, IBM Thinkpad at the IBM Authorized Ebay store.
Your dealing directly with Big Blue (you pay by credit card thru IBM's secure site), the laptops are brand new with full warranties, and the models are just a couple of steps behind their top of the line models. I have a Thinkpad X22, and everything works with Debian, even 3d acceleration.
The laptops they auction are heavily discounted, and many have a Buy It Now price for haggle free buying.
Also, check out IBM's Global Financing site for refurbished computers and laptops. Great way to get and older Thinkpad that is sure to work with Linux. -

Good read. It's a bit scary, ANYONE can pull a scam like this. I thought I'd check to see if his feedback was still up... indeed it is, feedback
Notice he has 2 1/2 pages of good feedback spanning over a few months... Then he goes in for the "Attack" all at once... ALL the bad feedback comes in a two day period. Those bidders thought they had a real seller I'd assume... There's no real way to protect yourself sadly ;[ -
Ebay Scammers
I got scammed out of $1,500 on ebay a couple months ago... I researched a bit on what my options where and filed complaints to paypal and ebay. Paypal found the seller guilty and was able to get me back a total of *50* dollars out of the $1,500.
It's amazing how difficult it is to get anything done about online fraud.
Anyways, in doing research, here is a very helpful site I found : http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/!turk

Solution
Use gold or silver, stop using fiat money, use the public notary, and use certified and registered mail delivery.
When you use credit cards and checking accounts, the terrorists have already won. This guy "Nelson" went on a rampage because eBay and others follow credit card number usage and that takes too fucking much time. To open a auction selling account on eBay, they just ask for a fucking Credit card number to match with who you say you are. eBay didn't ask for that 3 years ago, and now legitimate people that don't use credit cards and that fake contracted-waiver-of-rights are at a loss. I can't upgrade my "bidding account" to a "selling account", I'm stuck because I don't use credit cards and only deal in cash. I don't even use Money Orders because they are non-Negotiable outside the United States corporation. If people were to entrust eBay with their left testicle or left mammary gland, or perhaps a verry valuable asset such as a rare gold coin; that if they commit fraud would lose such article, then you would see less fraud...unless are we talking about the sato-masochist type of scammers.
Oh yea, this scammer "Nelson" whatever his name is, he was in Orlando Florida and visited Disney World a while and lived with some lady he conned... hmmm...Disney World, Con, Sato-Masochists... same thing.
If you want to see a real conman on eBay, check out this guy who sold me and others bad Athlon Classic CPUs in stead of NEW Athlon Classic CPUs or NEW Athlon XP CPUs; someone with an arab name I can't remember, was it "Nelson"? Come to remember, I was scammed by this guy for $300.00 for a Duron 700 system, way back in year 2001; he was from Florida...hmmm...Nelson maybe (trueke's name was Jose G. Fernandez and I'll never forget that con that talked me 6 months into waiting for nothing and his whole life is in the middle !@#$ blah blah blah) -

Re:Friendster
But they are obviously interested in buying my Friendster Cmdr. Taco, based on how high the bidding is going on eBay.

Buy my art
Famous Painting. This would look great in any geeks computer room.

Re:in several months friendster will charge $s
there's no reason to take this seriously. especially when people start to ebay their network.
large open source connected communities already exist, like livejournal.com (or deadjournal, or any of the other sites that run the code). there a lot of other journal/blog engines around as well, but LJ seems to have the largest active base, much larger than friendster. slash even has this capability, i just don't think it's used by most users. being able to search friends of friends, which seems to be the major distinguishing feature of friendster, can be done on livejournal, but it's not a well known feature. and if it proves moderately popular, how long before one of the big dating sites like match offers it? -
Not at that price pointThere are a few options, but you're not going to find anything for as little as you want to pay.
- MZ104: One of the most popular SBCs around. Small size and many uses. If you follow the pricing on that page you'll find you'll be paying at least $300/unit for the setup you need.
- PPC-E5: Looks to have almost everything you need, and then some. Unit comes with processor, RAM, disk-on-chip, and even a bundled touchscreeen LCD that fits nicely to the whole thing. It doesn't have USB/CompactFlash/etc.. and it also costs ~$1,000/unit.
- PCM-3350: Made by the same company as the PPC-E5 and actually a better option. 300MHz proc, CompactFlash, onboard VGA @ 1024x768, USB. Slap a screen on this thing and away you go. But, alas, it's still $348/unit and it doesn't come with a screen.
- ViewPad: From ViewSonic. Another all-in-one unit that could probably also work for you. At the time of posting, this unit is going for $200 (a decent deal). But it's only one unit, and it's still twice as much as your mentioned target price.
Like a previous poster mentioned, the only way you're going to find a device for around $100 is by buying bulk, used PDAs from eBay and they're still not going to do what you want them to. Hell, the PJRC costs $150 alone, and it's only an MP3 board. -
Re:Sigh. We already did the maths on this
I sold three accounts for $550 and bought two for $450 in under and it only took 25 minutes. (some waiting to get PayPal confirmations etc.) The guy I bought the two accounts from, had sold 4 other accounts the last 24 hours. Two for around $300 each. Look at this: E-Bay (ebay). Several transactions going to take place in the $100+ range. Adding to this, you don't have to live in the US/western Europe to play $1000 could actually be a lot of money. For the smaller transactions I know a lot of people buy something from someone on E-Bay, and when everything is ok, they later just contact the guy without using E-Bay and just pay them through PayPal, knowing that they can trust the seller. When that happens you have people just sending, lets say, $5 through paypal, and the seller shows up at a location providing them with 500k ingame cash (or whatever goods they wanted). It's like pay infront, and get free delievery. Also, in Asheron's Call you can have bots running, controlled from IRC, so whenever you recieve a confirmation from PayPal that GI Joe paid you $7 for 100 health elexirs, you just add 100 HE. to GI Joe's account on your bot (this is done from IRC). GI Joe shows up at your ingame house and picks up the 100 elexirs and you didn't even have to go ingame to controll the transactions. This way, I don't see a problem with doing a lot of small transactions every day. I think you are blocking your vision with too many real life problematic constrains, like most of us. But some people can make money out of anything, and they live at the stock exchange, run big corporations, earn lots of money from mmorpgs.... And they most likely have lots of fun doing it!

sketchy ebay listings for this crap....
Doing a quick eBay search for "robosweep" returns a few listings saying: "ROOMBA ROBOSWEEP INTELLIGENT SWEEPER"
Very very deceptive.....
And look at the crap description.... I almost fell off my chair laughing....
*Similar to Roomba but at a fraction of the price!
RoboSweep is a very affordably priced sweeper, especially compared to other robotic cleaners on the market..
RoboSweep uses built-in intellegence to stay in the room it's sweeping. Just turn it on and it sweeps! (Ya... sweeps your $40 away...)
Of course, at the end:
THIS IS NOT A ROOMBA! IT IS A ROBOSWEEP!
Just when I thought things were bad enough.... more searching finds some place is selling this thing for $46!!
Caveat emptor! A fool and his money are sooooo soon parted on the Internet ;) -
Re:Hrmmm
So now if I pay shipping on that... would you send it my way?
You're the second person to suggest that ...It's just an Indigo (one, not a ^2). It's one of the better ones, an R4000 model, but it's still slow slow slow by today's standard. It also requires a proprietary keyboard and mouse.
If you really want an SGI, check Ebay. There's quite a few of them there.
You really want an Indigo^2 or later version (like the Octanes), rather than an Indigo 1. The Indigo 2's are faster, have 12 SIMM slots, and take standard PS/2 keyboards and mice. The Indy's are like the Indigo^2's, but slower, have different expansion slots and only have 8 SIMM slots. You will need a special VGA cable, but once you have that, they'll work with standard PC monitors.
Looks like there's lots of Indigo^2s on Ebay for less than $100 -- for example, the SGI Indigo 2 R10K 200 mhz Solid Impact 256 MB for $59 (buy it now at $89.) Get lots of memory now if you can (they max out at 384MB, I think) -- 32 MB parity SIMMs are hard to find.
And even so, a p3/600 with a GF2 card will blow these things away in every way. The R10k CPUs are fast at floating point, but they are still slower than modern PCs.
The Octanes are a good deal faster, but they'll cost a lot more.
I really don't think it makes sense to ship mine -- I was thinking of donating it to Goodwill here in town. They already have several of the other SGIs we used to have (I used to administer the 4D/240 in their museum, for example) so they can probably find a home for this one too. If you want one, you can find a much better on on Ebay for not much more.

Re:One word: BOARD!
These games still exist in arcade board format somewhere. Get a supergun and then you can play it on your tv as long as the board is good.
I have an early 90's TMNT Board myself, purchased here,, and it is sweet. It also makes it fairly legal for me to play it on MAME (It would be more so if I dumped it myself). -
Anything that can be profitable will be profitable
Is there an economically viable idea here? Yes - see Magic the Gathering Online - people are willing to shell out real money for unreal versions of the same items sold on real cardboard.
Will MMRPG maintanance turn into suit-and-tie work with as many lawyers and and accountants protecting as technical staff? Yes - this will be like anything else in the world - where concerns over ownership and liability rise to overshadow the actual work being sold.
But would I ever want to play in such a world? No. RPGs I enjoy are a blank slate where everyone starts equal no matter what their real world background. For me, they are a frontier fantasy more than a hack-and-slash fantasy. Once the frontier is settled and the normal inequalities of the real world take over, the whole enjoyment for me in being there is gone.
I'd rather make my money in the real world doing real work. Well, except that my real work is spent on a network doing virtual grunt work for people I'll never meet. I play the .com MMRPG for a living. -

I hold in my handHow long before I get a trackball embedded in my mouse?
They exist. The one I have in my hand now (no, the other hand...) was made by a company calling themself Starlogic, although I think they went out of business even before I bought mine from Circuit City for $8 last November. Google on Starlogic, trackball and mouse and you'll get lots of hits. There's even a couple on e-bay, but be warned, like most stuff on e-bay (I.M.H.O.) this is a scam - the mouse is showing currently at 99 cents, but the bastard will charge you 12 bucks shipping to send it to you if you "win".

Theres a cnn article up where the auctioneer states he expects to bring in close to $1 million.
But just perusing his auctions it looks like nobody's bidding. There are only a handful a bids on all of his items -- most ending tomorrow. Even with the CNN and Slashdot exposure, nobody's bidding.
