Re:What I don't get...
I think the basic premise is being tired of being screwed over. Most slashdotters were probably born between the 1950s and 1980s, we've seen records replaced by tape, then tape with CD and perhaps now CD with DRM-download
We supposedly buy a licence to listen to music.. but then when a new format comes out, we're not allowed to "upgrade", you have to buy a whole new licence. If your media is damaged - tough. Buy a new licence.
We have had to sit and watch the recording industry take legal action to prevent importers from selling music in some countries at a lower retail price gained by buying it in another country... so they can continue to take massive profits in richer societies. This still happens - the EU is investigating iTunes Music Store pricing in the UK as its more expensive than in the euro-zone.
Do I pirate music? Yes. Do I know it's technically wrong? Yes. Am I sympathetic to an industry which has stolen from me and everyone else for years and now has the tables turned? No fucking way.
I will start buying music again when I can pay between 40 and 50 pence per track for a file without DRM. Until then, I'll steal. -

IBMI'm hard pressed to see them doing this. They've sold their PC business to Lenovo. Why would Lenovo care about trusted computing? Isn't China pretty much against MS operating systems? Don't they officially use a home-grown version of Linux?
Another reason I'm glad I use Macs, really. Let's hope Linus's PowerMac really does drive Linux on PPC as much as we all hope it will. Then, let's hope IBM starts pushing PPC based systems more than the Xeon powered servers I always see advertised.

Re:Let's hope it benefits Tivo.
There are a lot of benefits for Comcast on this! Number One is that they are no longer in the business of co-developing and fully supporting DVR software. Instead they have somebody who specializes in doing both of those things. They get a natural way to tie their cable tv/dvr product into their ISP/portal product, since TiVo has already come up with an "acceptable" (to content providers) way to do this (Home Media and ToGo.) Plus they have a compettitive advantage over DirecTV/Dish, since DirecTV looks like they will drop TiVo.

I think Apple is having fun with the rumor sites
I have notice that every time now that there is a rumor about a product release. The date comes and goes, then a couple days later or a week later they finally give it out. I wonder if they do this after the rumor comes out, or they give out a false date to throw everyone off. I'm guessing that it will be April 4-8 that we will see this produce gets showen. Also, has everyone seen Sneak preview: Engadget RSS feed as seen via Tiger Quartz Extreme .

Re:It doesn't matter
I hate to break it to you, but Blu-ray actually does it one better by allowing dual-layer DVDs on the same disc. (The HD-DVD versions only have the 4.7gb) http://www.engadget.com/entry/1234000917024829/
HD-DVD pretty much has zero advantages at this point. -
Re:It doesn't matter
The HD-DVD portion can't play on a regular DVD player, but it was announced in December that dual-layer HD-DVD discs are possible with the HD layer for newer players and a standard layer for older players (hence backwards compatibility). This is similar to the SACD music discs that play in regular CD players, just without the enhanced Super Audio ability.

Re:Apple vs Microsoft
Yes you are correct the Smartphone OS is a subset of Windows Mobile, which is itself derrived from the Windows CE operating system designed for Handheld devices and industrial control devices.
Windows CE is not descended from Windows XP!

This phone will be based on Windows Mobile Magneto the next generation of Windows CE. -
Pictures of the SGH-i300 cell phoneFor those who are interested, here are some pictures of the cell phone from engadget.com

More Details
The friendly article is pretty light on details, given it's overclockerclub.com.
Engadget stated that the phone supports MP3, WMA, AAC, and AAC+ audio files, and a plug-and-play drag-and-drop no-brainer way of transferring files as you please. -
And....?
Big deal. Engadget was Talking about this last year

Not LCD... OLED!
"The major improvement in my eyes is that some models have an FM tuner."
My eyes don't care about an FM tuner, they care about the nice "backlit LCD screen" but according to Engadget these will have OLED screens, which (from the pictures) look sweet!

Nice but...

another reason to read engadget
Posted on Engadget Friday.
This is yet another reason to read Engadget, Ars Technica, and other tech news sites. You get the "breaking news" days earlier.
Well, at least with Slashdot, when you do get the news, you get it more than once. -

Damn you, SONY!
This is the first time I've ever envied a phone that wasn't motorola. I have a Moto v80 (stellar phone) and am positively drooling over pictures of this thing. I don't even care that it probably uses a memory stick... hopefully Moto's iTunes phone won't only be that horrid green thing we've seen posted around.. maybe even get SD card support! That would be so kick-ass.

The Sony Ericsson Z800 is the one I'm waiting for
While the idea of a Walkman phone is cool, I'd rather have a clamshell phone -- if only because, with all the buttons on the inside, it's harder (or impossible) to accidentally answer or hang up the phone while it's in my pocket. So, the one I'm waiting for is the Sony Ericsson Z800. With Bluetooth, Infrared, MP3/AAC support, it has just about all I could ask for.
Still, I'm also waiting to see if/when it'll make Apple's list of iSync-compatible phones -- being able to sync with my Powerbook (as I do now with my Nokia 3650) is pretty handy. That, and I'm hoping that an unlocked version won't cost me an arm and a leg (I'm in the US on T-Mobile, fwiw).

Roll your own...
This article got me thinking...could I make my own? After hitting up google it looks like yes, but you need to pay for uploading software to get it onto your phone. There must be a "free" way to do this.

Re:Show me the security
People wave this "it only works from inches away" bullshit without having any idea how radio works.
Its simply a matter of using the right antenna with the right gain. See the bluetooth sniper rifle for details (kilometer range! With bluetooth!). If the antenna is too big to hide on your person, set up shop in a dark alley somewhere and scan the masses as they mill by unaware.
And yeah, tinfoil would work but make it all the more stupid. Not only would the old lady have to fumble the card out of her purse, you'd be sitting around watching her try to unwrap it and wrap it again afterwards. Just swipe the damn thing already! -

Re:iPod Photo
I still have no idea what the purpose of the iPod Photo is. Sure, the better battery life and color screen are nice, but who really cares about carrying their photos around with them for viewing on a 1.5-inch screen?
Very convenient presentation tool. Just google "iPod photo presentation". The top two links in the search results pretty much sum it up:
HOW-TO: Put PowerPoint on your iPod Photo
ZappTek's presentation-to-iPod photo software -

Re:The UN?????
They manage the radio spectrum, satellite orbits, and distress/safety stuff. The reason why you can make a phone call to China is that telcos around the world generally abide by ITU standards (technically "recommendations"). They do a bunch of other stuff too (R&D, etc.).
Not to mention the occasional civil air patrol showing up in order to tell you to shut off your TV.

Where is ...The IBM PC or the Apple I or II?
These are much better examples of classic gadgets then the Powerbook 100. The Powerbook line should have been mentioned once not twice.
The IBM Thinkpad 701 was mentioned but I think it has clearly had more impact on the way people work and the laptop market in general then the powerbook.
I was gratified to see the Tivo mention and in light of the deathwatch , maybe this offers some hope.

Not newUsing human skin as the medium to conduct signals for communications is a concept that has been around for years. See for example this computer.org article (PDF).
Someone else mentioned the Microsoft patent.
The interesting thing about Microsft's patent is that it includes power, not just data.

Re:At least
Ah, with respect to xenon.. Well to ask that question you must first ask this one: what does xenon have to do with Intel releasing 64 bit p4's? Well you see intel has a chipline, Xeon, that is one letter away from xenon the element. Using a bit of deductive reasoning you might infer that a mistake was made and the post actually referenced Xeon. So, with respect to xenon with respect to intel launching a 64 bit p4, DMA stands for Doctor of Musical Arts, but there is a decent argument to be made that it might actually be a reference to Direct Memory Access. Anyway, check here and look at comment #3.

Re:does it.........
This is much more likely; or maybe it will just default to "Unknown #".>
Interesting enough when I call someone from Skype, be it to a landline or cell, my number shows up as 0000123456
Freaks a lot people out. Skype should be offering "SkypeIn", or the association of a number with your account so land lines can call you, hopefully by winter. -
Will they publish deadtree-only content?
The lead time for publishing a paper magazine is atrocious when compared to webtime. Many web sites for regular print magazines will only run the articles after the print has gone out. What's the deal going to be with Make, do we know? By the time it shows up in my mailbox will I already have read the articles?

*Yawn*
Still won't keep me from dropping their service at the end of our contract and jumping ship to T-Mobile where they don't cripple their phone's bluetooth features or force you to use their service to download ringtones (rather, you can simply add them using say, a datacable).
Plus, T-Mobile uses the SIM cards. So if I wanna switch phones in the middle of my contract I don't have to get Verizon's permission or pay $250 for a crippled phone.

Linking is Illegal
Linking to something illegal is illegal as you are an accesory.
This is how they take down torrent aggregators.
And why you should never direct people to crack houses.
Soon it will be illegal to even have a finger that could point to a crack house as that could induce pointing.
Just as in Manilla it is not permissible to have blank media, 'just in case' it has copyright infringing content.http://www.boingboing.net/2005/02/13/manil a_transit_cops_.html

Intense speculation
Of course, the big N must have something up thier sleeve, they are acting fact on the threat of the PSP, which is using exactly the same 'later to market' tactics as the playstation.. everyone waited for the newer device, which caught the inside hub of innovation.
The PSP will be very nice. I am not a gamer per se, but I will so be pwning one of these devices with some seriously sexy home brew apps.

Slashdot is a blog....and yet everyone on
/. seems to hate bloggers with a passion. Granted, /. is a community blog/bulletin board, with a different setup than your average political blog. But I see so many people (from the mainstream media down to the lowest slashdotter) assume that political blogs ARE blogs. Bullshit. They are NOT the totality of blogging. Blogging is much more than some right/left wing person ranting and investigating. Some of the best blogs are completely different in design and execution. And I think the majority of blogs are set up by 13-year old girls who talk about whatever they had for breakfast. And that's fine. I don't have to read those blogs! Why does the harmless self-expression of others threaten slashdotters so much? Now, I won't disagree that "open source journalism" is just a buzzword that was created on a blog somewhere, but have a little patience; they're trying to describe something we don't have a word for yet. And the words we do have are weighted down with pos./neg. connotation. Really, what we're talking about here is non-corporate media, which can encompass anything from indymedia.org to powerlineblog.com to engadget.com.
I dunno about anybody else, but I'm tired of the negative, cynical, close-minded mindset that so envelopes slashdot about such issues. Open-source is an ideology, and it's an extremely important one. But let's not deride people whose interest lies outside of technological pursuits; people who (gasp!) use technology to do work rather than work on technology. Bloggers have different opinions and interests than you. Is that so wrong? Can they not be united in the struggle against the corrupt and fascist mainstream media/evil software companies? Do they not value their freedom, just as we do?
Furthermore, I've read many posts in this thread already, and even open-source advocates can't seem to agree on what open source is! Some say it's a way of working cooperatively. Some say it's simply not closed-source. Could I pry a few minds open here and suggest that it is both and much more? It is nothing less than the united struggle against tyrrany, the tyrrany that we all KNOW that those in power will impose if given the chance. Without our resistance ("our" including all who stand up for their rights), can you imagine the distopian hell we would live in? We only have to look into our recent history to find examples, and we only have to look to totalitarian states currently in existance to realize the importance of freedom.
Simply put, open-source is about freedom and openness (glasnost). Surely most of us here recognize the power of open-source, but we do not yet know it's full potential. Conversely, we do not yet know the power of blogging. Yes, "blog" is just a stupid word, but that doesn't matter. What matters is that blogging has the power to take down totalitarian governments. If, through the internet, people in a restrictive regime are enabled to communicate effectively the government no longer controls the flow of information. When that happens, a critical mass can be achieved and revolution is possible. Look at Ukraine's election for a recent example.
Blogging is not just ranting and boring shit (although that boring shit might actually serve as "cover" for the more explosive material), it's about communication, freedom and openness. Blogging and open source are going to change our world. Are they over-hyped? Well duh. Who do you think is doing the hyping? The mainstream media, because they don't know how to do anything else. And if you hate blogs because the media hypes them, well then I guess you're just buying what they're selling.
Just like on my blog, I don't expect anybody to care or read what I have written, but I feel a heck of a lot better for having written it. Mod me as you will.
