Fluid Flow
I wonder how fast fluid flows out of this little beastie?

First post idiots
Slashdot should do what fark does and change all "first post!" jackass comments to something like "I have an IQ in the single digits" and change the timestamp to some 12 hours in to the future.

Re:The only way this will succeed...
...have a "fetchmsttfonts" style script...Debian has something similar for libdvdcss (I think that was the one, it was CSS-related in either casee), the legality of which is questionable in some places, but I have my own feelings about the validity of such laws.
They can't be distributed with the OS, but they can be installed.
You've got a good point, any reservations I have about this technique would lie in my distrust of the "anonymity" the Internet provides, not in locally run software. Well, given that that software itself isn't of dubious providence.
;)I've been spending way too much time on network security, I'm getting far too paranoid. Nix that, just blame it on all the damned tabloids.

Fark *had* a great photoshop contest on this
FARK had a great photoshop contest involving a pic from the Tivo picnic. The mother of the kid in the picture objected to it and it looks like FARK took it down. I guess she took great exception to shiat like this highest voted winner of the contest.

here's a link to a wave file of Bloop, sped up 16 times. Fark had this earlier today.

"Blogs" are not journalism
First of all, Michael is right..."blog" has become extremely overused, much like "P2P." But that's besides the point.
Merely linking to news does not equal journalism. Slashdot isn't journalism. Kuro5hin isn't journalism. Yahoo's Full Coverage site isn't journalism. Hell, Fark isn't journalism. They are link farms. They find and post links to actual news stories across the world. While this makes for an easy-to-read digest of news and information, it does not mean the site becomes a seeming bastion of original journalism.
Real journalism, IMHO (speaking as one), is going out, researching a story, interviewing people, and putting together a concise unbiased story (keep your media bias arguments until the end of class kids). Journalism is not posting a link to a news story elsewhere, and then adding your own personal opinions or thoughts. While the Berkeley school is trying to avoid this, putting a "blog" label on it won't make any difference. Major news sites, like the New York Times and the Washington Post already post their news to the Internet in real time. Some even include "Comment on this story" links as well.
Take away the personal opinions and rambling links, and you don't have a so-called "blog." You have an online news site, just like the big boys. Calling it a "blog" doesn't give any more "hipness" or credibility.
I wish everyone would get over this stupid "BLOGS ARE THE FUTURE OF JOURNALISM" crap. You know what? They aren't. -

There are low(ish) voltage tubesThere are some rare tubes out there that are designed to work with plate voltages as low as 30V. They were used in portable radios.
There is a 24V potential available on the motherboard between the +12V and -12V supplies (if PC's still have the -12V) but I don't think 24V is enough to do anything. A small inverter or charge pump along the lines of how the MAX232 works on the board would do the job too.
There are also dual triode tubes that would take care of the stereo issue.
That being said, I think this whole thing is a joke. If this were really an audiophile motherboard there would be a lot of metal shielding around the audio section, and the picture wouldn't look like a Fark photoshop.

if fark can do it, then I guess moz can do it too
Personally, I'm warry of joining up with people that I only know via the internet. But Fark has plenty of fark parties and no one seems to complain about those. Whatever.

Fark-like Not Safe For Work
I work at a place that is kind of touchy about content served up to those who signed the agreement to be allowed online, and that link to rude words I think needs one of the fark "Not Safe For Work" things after it.
Yeah, the thing doesn't link to boobies, but grepping for incoming text vs. grepping for inbound boobies is a tad easier for log generation.
Besides, I thought rude words just involved being insensitive, not foul. -
A pertinant request
Dear Mr Troll,
Could you please convert this cute picture of a squirrel into ASCII art suitable for posting on slashdot?
thx -
Ah, yes...
Nothing like another Slashdot story peeled from the folds of fark.com ... :) -

Oh, why didn't I just use your link? 98lite.com is a pr0n site. As they say over at Not Safe For Work.

Re:I find the modem pretty low...The notice on the web page is just a start. It's not the naked PC I object to. I think that is the greatest thing. It's bundling a farking (tm) winmodem with the damn thing, replacing a microsoft tax with a lucent tax basically.
It's kind of like... "We know you're going to load Windows on this anyway, and if you're so cheap as to want a $400 PC we know damn well you won't buy Windows legit, but that's OK, we'll make money off of it and all the alternative OS supporters will love us too..."
Let's face it, Microsoft has every right to sell proprietary software and make a fortune at it. They cross the line when forcing us to buy it. But on the flip side, none of us should be supportive of the idea of stealing it either.
I just don't think this particular computer promotes what many of us want to see. What I want is to go to website or store, and choose what computer I want with what OS I want bundled with it. You can preinstall Linux on a PC for basically nothing and if someone wants to wipe it install OS/2 or Be or FreeBSD, there's nothing wrong with that either...
30 minutes on a work processor to type up a notice to throw inside the box that says "This computer does not come with an operating system. Here are your choices..." Extra credit for throwing in a linux distro CD set that would add about 20 cents to the wholesale price of the PC... They could sell it for $400 instead of $399

Plug?!?Lately, it seems, alot of posts here at
/. were on fark.com just a few days before.I was reading about this last night there...
Of course, Fark's comments section sucks compared to
/. - you can't browse at +3 like I do, for example.If you've ever strolled through
/. at 0 or -1, you'll get a good idea of what fark's comment section is like. (egads!)Probably OT, though...
-
Could you please...
...start reporting things before they're entire days (sometimes weeks) old? It's quite off-putting when us nerds get the news faster from Fark, which is hardly known to be the Speedy Gonzalez of news services.
;) -
I was waiting for this to show up on /.... Since it's been on every other website I regularly surf, and seems to fit the classic definition of a meme.
There are discussions about this site on MetaFilter, a MacSlash article, a very funny Fark thread, as well as mentions on Ars and Memepool.
Seems the tech subset of the Internet has been well and truly trolled, if indeed this is a hoax, which I am inclined to believe, given that all of the banner ads on the site seem to lead to the same domain.
-
Re:No thanks
Mozilla also let's you suppress ads by server - so ads.yoursite.com can be suppressed and there goes your banners, too. You can play with it if you want, running ads and content from the same server...but most don't work that way, as far as i've seen. That trick works great for sites like MSN that have a million little buttons. I usually won't block the ads just the cruft that wastes my bandwidth.
Text based ads - I like them. They don't waste bandwidthe, they aren't so flashy or corny. Done well they are a breath of fresh air. fark is a good site that uses them. I love the site, the text-ads are ok, they need work (less attention grabbing (HEY LOOK WAHOO) and more content ("Buy XYZ from a cool company that supports Fark" is more my style"). And I wouldn't worry about text-based ads being confused for content. Just put them in the place normal adverts go, like top middle or on a sidebar. Maybe add "<adv>, </adv>" tags, not the html but make it visible, you know? -
Re:subscriptions win, slashdot loses
So basically, you want TotalFark for slashdot? And how much did the people there bitch about it?
-
subscriptions win, slashdot loses
Slashhdot will probably make a fair amount of $$$ off of the banner free subscription idea, but this "deal" just doesn't add anythng of value. I mean, what kind of value is it for me to pay to not see ads, I see them everywhere as it is and have become accustomed to filtering them (mentally and proxy).
Here's something that I might be willing to pay for (ideas stolen from Fark):
- Open the submission queue, there is a lot of cool stuff that doesn't get posted but people would still like to read it.
- Make it known who the subscribers are, kinda like bumper stickers for supporting the police.
- Open the submission queue to early comments by subscribers.
There is little value in regurgitation of other news outlets and given half the chance and motive there are plenty of sites that would love to replace /. -
So long and thanks for...nothing.
Well, I was thinking of subscribing, but after last nights x-files screwup I got to thinking about how im getting my geek news. Fark and Google News appear to be decent shortterm alternatives. So instead of subscribing, I'm removing my
/. link from my homepage and moving on.Thanks for the sometimes interesting ride.
Please fire chrisd and jKatz. It won't make me come back, but it will at least restore some order to the universe.
Thanks,

Obvious...
At first I thought it was wierd that there was no "OBVIOUS" tag in front of this headline. Then I realized this isn't FARK...

Re:Provigil = Bad Experience
After hearing about this stuff a couple days ago on FARK, I scoured the newsgroups for experiences. There was a very broad range of them, from very good to very bad. The range of doses involved was anywhere from 100mg to 1000mg a day. I also hang out in the ADD/ADHD groups and hear similar ranges of experiences for the variety of drugs used for that condition. It seems obvious to me that certain drugs, like Provigil, affect people differently. This is no surprise. It you have a bad reaction to it, stop using it. But, the guy standing next to you might respond to it favorably. I certainly hope that more options become available so that you're chances of leading a wakeful life improve. I'm not narcoleptic, but I know what it's like to be sleepy most of the time.
Must take nap now... -
Art associated with pornI am sure that there are many art, piercings, and other sites that don't feel they are porn that would be forced to get a
.prn domain. I mean, would Playboy be considered a porn site, being put in the same category as a site like All Ladies Shaven? Is this going to be forcing sites that link to said web pages (Fark, CyberCrime, or Slashdot)?
And, this does nothing for other countries. And, this does nothing but group porn where it will be easier to find. For example, if I am wanting to go to the White House, but instead put in http://www.whitehouse.com, then I hit a porn site. Or, I can just put ".com" after phrases like "blowjob", "sexydancers", etc., and be fairly assured of porn sites. Now, just tack on ".prn" to any group of words in the english language? A kid won't be able to type in ".prn"? -

Gotcha
Well, a huge thanks to
/. for going along with this. I was able to get FARK on board, as well, and we all had a really good time with this.
I hope everyone takes this in good humor.
Lots of people sent really kind and sweet congratulatory messages, and I actually feel pretty badly for fooling such nice people. All the idiots who thought it was a really good idea to fill my inbox with "Wesley is gonna ruin Enterprise" crap should get a life, and direct any further comments to the nearest brick wall.
I think the greatest highlight of the day came when my mom called Anne, while I was at work.
The conversation went something like this:
Mom: Do you have something to tell me?
Anne: Uh, no.
Mom: Do you have some big news about Wil?
Anne: Oh, that. Uh, what day is today?
Mom: It's Monday!
Anne: Right. And the date is...?
Mom: It's April Fir-- OH! Damn you!
Heh. I guess my dad was all pissed off, stomping around my parent's house because I didn't tell them myself, and he "had to read it on Wil's $%@#!ing website!"

Sell "admin for a day" on Ebay
Slashdot could auction the right to accept, decline and post topics on Slashdot for one day. Fark.com has done it a couple times with relative success. The auction winner obviously gets to promote himself with an article posting on that day. How much would that be worth on Slashdot? Fark got a few hundred dollars. I imaging slashdot is worth quite a bit more for the right business.

what about the FARK "total" model?
Fark.com has a brilliant model whereby users can pay a fee to see ALL stories submitted to the site, not just those approved for frontpage. I think this is a brilliant idea that would work even better on Slashdot and make a TON of money. I know I'd pay 20/year for it.
There's a good review of this idea and discussion of how it might apply to Slashdot here .

The Fastest Mod This Side of CrackWhore
These fat moderators mark offtopic almost as fast as they cum on the cheap hookers that stain their beds. I've never seen such a fast handed off-topic mod.
Have you?
They live to suck. And get fat. And mod furiously.
By the way Fark is way ahead on page hits. Also, OSDN ads make up 75% of the banner ads here.
It's like if my Mother paid my salary.
It seems a trend has turned to niche, but a lot of people haven't been told. Too busy flippin' over Bowling Ball Annie.

Re:Are you serious?
Well, since the story already got Farked, it'll probably be more than that. More importantly, what is the story of her proposal going to sound like? "Yeah, it was so romantic. He proposed to me on the Internet,".
Weak.

It's about people
That's a neat idea. It's been done before, though. All you are doing is getting a machine to generate submissions to a human-edited queue. When I say *all you are doing*, I don't mean to disparage the idea. It's neat. You could certainly get rich if you have $25,000 for a patent application
We could use a distributed network of human brains to do the submissions, of course. The AI you are suggesting probably won't do well against them. AIs are bad at humour. That one, you can't patent anyway. here, there and here again are clear examples of prior art.
However, the key point of the Google competition is obvious. They're bypassing the recruitment agents. Google are going to have to sift through a small number of attempts. I doubt they'll get 500 entries that need a human to look at them. Maybe 100 of them will come from really clever people. Google will try to hire them. Maybe they'll get 25. Each of those people would have cost around $30,000 to hire through the usual channels. Who wins here? The only losers are the employment agencies.
I have a bunch of ideas to try. Unfortunately, my employment contract forbids me from entering. (although this is interesting enough to ask for a variation in my contract....) -
