Re:I HATE THE SLIDE RULE.
It is still mandatory to learn how to use a circular slide rule when training for private pilot license in many countries. Not sure about the US though ( took my PPL in Florida, but on the UK syllabus). I think its great fun doing calculations on it! Here's a pic of it: http://flickr.com/photos/kalleh/458254643/
-
I happen to have a few lying around.
I carry a circular slide rule in my briefcase for checking quick calculations and the various basic problems that pop up that are 'multiply/divide' ratio style problems. Here is a photo of this story's page along with my trusty CR-2 slide rule. (Many basic items, from time and distance to power or area calculations.) The circular slide rule is still a basic tool used by pilots (when things that take batteries fail) and you can even purchase watches that have them built in from companies like Citizen, Seiko, Breitling and others. Once you travel internationally and realize you have an instant currency converter on your wrist, you appreciate how useful they can be. I also have my father's slide rule from the 40s and 50s when he was studying engineering. It does far more than the circular rule (logs, 10 and natural).
There is something very useful about using these tools, they help you get a sense for the order of magnitude of your answer and you can frequently catch stupid mistakes when you are FORCED to consider the order of magnitude as your work the problem quickly and efficiently. Posters that have pointed this out ahead of me are spot on.
It might shock you, after reading all the above, to learn that I'm under 40 and live in North America.

But it would have been really helpful to have a story on the original decision linked, such as to the Slashdot post, or, perhaps, even a direct link to the original rejection?

I've lived in Chicago for 10+ years
I've lived in Chicago for over 11 years, in neighborhoods all over the city, and watched these cameras proliferate. Their effectiveness is questionable, as the criminal activity they're intended to prevent just moves to neighboring residential blocks. The drug dealers aren't dumb - they can see the blinking blue lights as well as anyone else.
Given the Chicago Police Department's record of torture going back over 3 decades and a coverup in which the current Mayor Daley continues to participate the notion of giving them more power is terrifying. Especially since even when police misconduct (oh, say, murder) is caught on film, nothing happens.
Perhaps the most depressing part is that the cameras tend to get installed only when rich white folks move in. A block in my multi-ethnic neighborhood that was all ganged up for years (though it's 2 blocks from a police station) suddenly got cameras (and the streets repaved) when the condos went up.
I mourn for my city. If we actually manage to land the Olympics, I'm outta here.

Collectors?
Hell, those 35s and 45s are being bought by people who want a sturdy reliable calculator for everyday use or to replace the 35 or 45 that FINALLY, after 30 or so years of use, stopped working.
My HP-45 is still on my desktop , still working, still used on a daily basis. -
Re:Why the License
It bloody well *is* the photographer's fault. Flickr sets the default licensing of all photographs to 'all rights reserved' when one creates an account. In order to change that licence, one has to make a conscious decision to do so. The details of the Creative Commons licence are laid out in perfectly clear English at http://flickr.com/creativecommons. So why, then, did the photographer publish the photos to Flickr under the CC licence? To be trendy? Using a non-'traditional' copyright licence like CC or GPL without understanding the ramifications of doing so is irresponsible and stupid. The photographer has no right whatsoever to plead ignorance in this case. IANAL, but I suspect that a lawsuit brought against the photographer for making the girl's likeness available for commercial use without first obtaining permission to do so would not be without merit.

Re:I've been out of it but...The only use for multiple cores and 4 gigs of RAM is if 80% of your CPU cycles are given over to DRM and Norton 360. Postprocess a 10mp RAW file and you easily use upwards of half a gig and one core (the other core making sure your other apps don't stutter while you're running some heavy processing script). Do a panorama from 22 of those images and a couple of gigabytes (and a good deal of patience) comes in handy.

Wow, so anyone writing a standard license is committing malpractice, because a standard license cannot make individual concerns? Eban Moglen beware!
You lawyers must be desperate for work (and every bit as despicable as commonly depicted).
The CC does mention that model release is required in their FAQ, this was mentioned in the ninth message in the Flickr thread that probably inspired the family to sue. It was the same message that mentioned someone getting paid 15 million US$ in a similar case. That is enough to make most people lose their head. -
The slogan doesn't refer to herhow is the slogan 'virgin to virgin' derogatory to a faithful churchgoing 16 year old? aren't girls like that supposed to be proud to be virgins?
Taken in the context of the advertisement the slogan implies that she is not a virgin. The ad says "Dump your pen friend", shows her picture, and then says "Free text virgin to virgin". The line "Dump your pen friend" applies to her; "Free text virgin to virgin" does not.
While the title on the original photo indicates she was making a peace sign, in some cultures the V sign can be seen as a means of taunting or threatening someone.

Re:What the hell's wrong with Boston?
Apparently, bombs look like electronic name badges. I guess I'm pretty lucky not to be shot when I wear my defcon 15 badge.
As for all you Slashdotters saying that the girl was an idiot for wearing an electronic name badge: please go kill yourselves. Your stupidity is a grave insult to humans everywhere, and it would be tremendous for all of us if you would die immediately. -
Re:It is all about money anyways.
I would dispute that this was a crowd photo. There are only two recognizable people in the photo. While the girl in question is the further from the camera of the two, she's clearly the subject, as the title of the photo is "Alison for peace", while she's giving a peace sign and the other girl (and the guy behind the other girl) isn't even even looking at the camera.
IANAL -
It is all about money anyways.
If you read the site, you will see the brother is in there speaking about getting loads of money for this. Check the teacherjamesdotcom postings. He is the older brother of the girl and is purely after this for money. It will be interesting to see what happens. In particular, the photographer was allowed to CC license since it was a crowd photo. But the girl (aleeviation in the site) was cut out from the photo.

Re:New CC based revenue stream1. Take a photo and release it under CC with attribution
2. Wait till the attribution leads you hear about someone using it
3. Sue
4. Profit! It seems that CC became a stylish fashion among (teen) people. It is a declaration of copyright rules, a serious thing which you actually give up some rights and potentially thousands of dollars.
A media company can search photos having CC tag using a search engine like Yahoo http://search.yahoo.com/cc and click "Find stuff I can use for commercial purposes". If guys/girls excellent amateur photo fits their needs, based on license, they will use it.
16 year olds should not play with things they don't understand.
Look at Flickr FAQ, they in fact automatically copyright (old fashion) peoples photos for them but if the person opts-in to use Creative Commons license, it is offered too.
http://flickr.com/help/photos/#87
I am saying CC is not a toy since recently a media company actually needed to use a creative commons licensed photo, they ended up finding nothing usable since every kind of junk is declared to use free based on CC. The creative commons is breaking up because people can't find actual ,professional copyrightable content which were declared CC licensed on purpose. All you find is some personal blogs and pictures which were actually stolen from commercial old fashion license stuff. People tagging Creative Commons has no clue about copyrights.
If your photo/video or even content is usable in commercial scene and you tag it with Creative Commons, it WILL BE USED and you won't receive a cent, you are giving up your rights. Understand things before you click boxes. -
Re:Well --- Why Not??
So Pix it is. Today I read the Dallas Morning News (print) which had a picture. That same picture is also on Flickr. Note the HEAVY editing; 1) The white sleeve is to the left instead of right as in the original picture. 2) a brick wall has been added 3) a caption has been added "Dump Your Pen Friend".
From DMN. "Alison's feelings are on view at Flickr.com, where she kicked off a three-month discussion of privacy and copyright law with a post below a picture of the ad that reads, "Hey that's me! No joke. I think I'm being insulted.""
Your obligatory pix is below.

Re:Dont blame the jobOr you could work as a contractor or otherwise self employed. Or you could work in academia. Or be good enough at your job that they're willing to give you 4 to 5 weeks of time off a year (there's nothing in that formula that says the vacation time is paid). Most of those options require not working for Fortune 500 companies, but again, I count that as a good thing.
Seriously, it's doable. I do it. I just got back from a month in Peru. If you want to live that way, you just stop coming up with excuses and start coming up with plans.

Re:Ozzie had talent?
In my honest opinion, he's a very talented singer. All the more so for being able to do it after what I will charitably characterize as an unfortunate amount of drug use.
As for the characterization of talent, I suppose the first thing I'd ask you is, can you sing the songs he sang, precisely the way he sang them? If not, I'd say it is clear that he has a talent that you do not. I know I can't do it, and I have a reasonably good voice. So he has a talent that I do not. I've been working as a musician since the late 1960's; one of my bands used to do an entire set of Black Sabbath, and the vocals were always a distinct challenge.

Example log files
I use WSUS and approve patches, or don't approve them. Normally Automatic Update patches are done through WSUS. They've updated this service several times.
Imagine my surprise when a lot of my workstation, with no one signed on, all started updating over my slow Internet connection & not over my 1Gb/s WSUS server.
Here is a log file from one such machine;
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1109/1373440155_1800168f54_o.jpg
I have 64 kilobit/second pipes to some networks with a dozen or so computers. It does appear that this update respected my BITS policy of using no more than 1kilobyte/second. My MRTG charts show no burst. My QoS device rate limits HTTP to the Internet at a higher rate than my WSUS server, so it could have caused some late night calls. -

Fashion industry manages...
Instead of moaning about their pathetic adds web advertisers should have a look at the people that make it work. Take the fashion industry as an example. They have managed to get people to WANT to view their adds. I mean seriously, you have people sticking pictures of their idols onto the wall, yet these posters are essentially massive adds for the clothes or whatever series or music or whatever the model is related to. Hair dressers have used fashion magazines for ages, and you can bet that the fashion industry takes advantage of this.
Then you have car companies. They don't just stick a pretty model next to the Prius because of the environmental benefits you know...
Movies use trailers, games use demos, as do computer software, shampoo companies, parfumes...
Some magazines give you "2 free issues" with an easy way to continue with a subscription. Coca cola will give you all kinds of freebess with their logo on them.
Now have a look at on-line adds. Most of them have nothing to do with the content of the page they are at, they consume your bandwidth, slow down your browsing, they are generally just in the way, and in addition they are easy to filter. Gee, I can't possibly see why they don't work...
So, let me see if we can teach these people a lesson. This is how the experts do it, take a hint...

1000 bucks is easy
I was in the same boat as you, once upon a time. If you're interested in a telescope, just go to telescope.com and look at the $1000 telescopes. Generally, you want the most aperture for your money, so you'll end up with a 10-12 inch dobsonian.
The downside of a 10-12" dobsonian is size, weight, and that it's not good for astrophotography at all.
If you want to do astrophotography, then you really don't care about the telescope. The only thing you should initially be worried about for astrphotography is the mount. Once you have the mount, you can just connect your camera right to it for wider angle shots, or through a telescope. Orion's Sirius mount costs anywhere from 850 to 1150 dollars, depending on whether you want the GoTo controller. It's decent enough for some astrophotography.
If you try to get the telescope AND the mount for 1000 bucks, you'll end up with a mediocre telescope and a lousy mount. Hmm, and if you were planning on getting the camera, adapters, and potentially a coma corrector or focal reducers as well... Well, you can take pictures of the moon, but the faint fuzzy objects require too much nice equipment.
I took this picture of the North American nebula using a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, Canon's sub-$100 50mm prime lens, and an Orion Sirius mount. -

As a parrot owner, sad news
I have a Meyers Parrot named Brady (picture: http://flickr.com/photos/mark_watson/392128570/) who is about 6 years old. When Brady was a baby, I used to show him videos on my computer, not of Alex, but of the Parrot at MIT who used a symbolic language. Brady was fairly much fascinated by the videos, and I showed them to him many times.
Although parrots have small neocortexes, they are clever little creatures. Brady has good analytic (puzzle solving) abilities, but his long term memory seems to be limited to things that he has been exposed to many times - this is just my own opinion, not backed up by any scientific research.
I work at home and can frequently give our parrot attention during the day - please don't even consider getting a parrot unless either your family can give it frequent attention and play time every day, or get a mated pair that can keep each other company. We find that we can't really leave rady in a room by himself, so we move him to where ever we are in the house, or better yet, just let him run/fly around (also known as running amuck :-)
A problem with parrots is that they do bite - I get a good bite every month or two, but I try to not let it hurt my feelings. I could probably avoid most bites by not handling Brady when I know that he is pissed off, but why bother. -

I have a photo of the Luxor from 100 miles away
On an all-night *yawn* trip from Salt Lake City to San Diego, I took this photo at the rest area in the desert between Baker and Barstow, California, looking in the direction of Las Vegas. Once I found refuge from the glare bombs surrounding the parking lot, I looked up and saw more stars than I've ever seen before... but Vegas and L.A. were huge glowing domes on the horizon. I don't think there's anywhere in the continental U.S. that is totally free from light pollution.
