The power of Web 2.0 is in full effect over at Digg, where users are revolting over Digg's decision to pull a story (that netted over 15,000 diggs) and reportedly boot a user for posting the HD-DVD AACS Processing Key number, which would allow someone to crack the copy protection on an HD-DVD. The front page (along with two and three) of Digg consists entirely of stories flaunting the number or criticizing Digg for its actions. Update: Fresh screencap, gallery of first four pages and thoughts after the jump.

Re:Spoken Like a True Self-Deluded CEO
Ballmer just defines ball game differently than you do. Lots of love, low sales is success for some. He would (obviously) prefer little love, high sales.
I suspect that what Mac has is the notion that by buying the 2% solution, you are smarter than us dolts in the 98%. If you can convince your customers that they are a member of an elite, you can sell them anything.
Well, maybe not an iproduct, but close.
I speak as a former member of the cult who got seduced by the fact that the Windows market is thirty times the size of the Mac market.

PowerpointIt would be nice if this could be used with bluetooth as a wireless gyroscopic mouse for presentations. Maybe throw in a laser pointer as well. Given that these cellphones already have all the hardware to do that, and Windows already has the software to handle bluetooth mice (doesn't it?), it would beat having to walk over to the laptop for every slide, or say 'slide' to cue an assistant, or use a different unfamiliar remote at each site.
Come to think of it, it would be nice even without the gyroscopes, just to be able to use the up/down buttons to advance slides, and maybe the rocker switch to move the mouse.

Re:Might not be ALL real numbers....
Well dude, try calling them back. As of last Friday, they are going to allow Windows XP to be purchased on certain models. Maybe you can exchange or something if you are adamant. Here is some info:

I had a friend buy a new PC a few weeks back and I spec'd it for him, and I told him to call and place the order online and demand XP instead of Vista. They refused. Then of course a week later, I see that article. Arrrgh -
Re:Blackberry made it
Blackberry probably made it not because people love them, but because the business world loves them. Lots of companies are handing them out to their employees in order to quench the last drop of productivity out of them.
The iPhone will appeal to the same kind of audience that likes the iPod.
Installing applications on phones is quite an expense with Windows Mobile edition.
I'd only consider installing software if it is opensource or at least free. So that leaves people like me to either install free java-based applications, buy a Linux-based phone like the OpenMoko FIC, or use an HTC phone and run Xanadux on it (I guess that would be pretty problematic).

Re:So the question is...would they have do so even if Apple didn't convince EMI to drop DRM? Did Apple ever claim they convinced EMI to drop DRM? EMI claims they approached Apple with this idea.
Remember, EMI and Yahoo Music have been testing the waters with DRM-free MP3s and WMAs since at least July with music by Jessica Simpson, Jesse McCartney, Norah Jones, and Relient K. Steve's bold open letter was posted one month ago.

Re:Worthless.m - CORRECTION (?)
Except err, some sites are now reporting that ISN'T the case despite that being touted as part of the rumour on gaming sites everywhere)...
From Gizmondo:
Microsoft told us there would be no new hardware inside the Elite except for that 120GB hard drive, alluding to the often-rumored cooler-running processors manufactured with the 65nm process
I wanted to get one, and was going to give my existing 360 to someone I know who has kids but can't afford a console, and having it run more quietly was a big part of the attraction for me bothering to get a new 360. My TV already handles component well, and that leaves the bigger HD as the only compelling feature (I filled up my 20 GB for the first time ages ago and that's just with Live! games, demo's and trailers - TV/Movie downloads won't be available here in the UK till later this year).
On it's own, a large HD (that I could get separately) is not a compelling enough reason for me to upgrade. The thing is, I like my 360 and I'm happy to pay a bit more for an improved version of the hardware. -
There was a company called HP?
LOL. HP was in the calculator business? Maybe with all the amazing failures at HP people will someday say, "HP was in the computer business?" Could the company stay in business if it couldn't make money with tricks like expensive ink and abuse of customers that lack technical knowledge?
My experiences in the last few years with HP have been so terrible there is not enough room to document them all. When Carly Fiorina destroys a company, it stays destroyed. Like many technically oriented companies, HP has mostly incompetent people on the board of directors, who mostly have little technical knowledge.

Re:What about global warming?
I hate to repeat a post, but for additional information:
In case anyone is wondering about what the project has acheived so far, here is the link.
Concerning global warming, the processing statistics imply the PS3 is by far the most efficient. At 380 watts, using the statistics given (which are said to be conservative in the case of the PS3), that puts the PS3 at 63 teraFLOPS/megawatt, or 16.5 kilowatts/teraFLOPS. I'm not really familiar with this, but isn't that fairly good? It's definately better than using PCs. Blue Gene/L, which is supposed to be very efficient, will deliver 240,000 FLOPS/watt, or about 0.24 teraFLOPS/megawatt. My calculations may be off, but that suggests the PS3 is highly efficient and a better use of power than a supercomputer.
I'm sure I'm missing some important considerations, so can someone through a little knowledge at this?
-
Very old numbers
Gizmodo has more current numbers (which are also a little behind). Currently they're showing 346 TFLOPS for PS3s.

512MB!!?With Vista's minimum requirement of 512MB of RAM, Vista will deliver performance that's 'sub-XP,'
No shit. My Vista Ultimate system uses nearly 1GB RAM at startup, and I don't have many services running or apps installed, since nothing I have works on Vista yet..
At work we decided that having a couple of developers running Vista from day one would the best way to ensure our compatibility. Sounded like a great idea till I drew that particular short straw...

Re:I couldn't tell ya
Everybody else I know with a 360 has had it die and was either fortunate enough to still be under warranty, or just ended up getting screwed.
Any Xbox 360 owner that had a unit fail out of warranty and paid for repair/replacement last year has been offered reimbursement and Microsoft extended the warranty to a full year on all Xbox 360s including ones purchased before the extension was announced. So, unless your "screwed" friends just happened to have their launch or near-launch units fail since November (and from the reports I've read, failure of a "bad" unit usually happens at least within the first 6 months, if not the first 2), they weren't/aren't "screwed." -
Re:Who's the bitch now?
Sorry, but it's in books too.
This is what I hate about modern advertising, you often don't even know it's advertising. So you can no longer trust anything you read.
Take for example company shills on forums who are paid to give positive opinions. How can you tell?
At least with tv or video you could mute it, turn it off or fast forward past it. Nowadays you don't even know it's advertising. -

upside-down cellphone from Bang&Olufsen -
erhm... there are rules for patents
When you apply for a patent you have to live up to three criteria:
1 - Your idea must not have been in the public domain before you file your patent aplication
2 - Your idea must not be obvious to a skilled expert in the field of the invention
3 - Your idea must be usable
Well, to me it seems that this is pretty obvoius to any engineer in the mobile phone market, and both this phonehttp://gizmodo.com/gadgets/cellphones/serene- bang--olufsens-upside-down-cellphone-210756.php and this phone http://www.garmin.com/products/gps12/ already have upside down displays.
So I hardly see how this can justify a patent... Of course it could all be about business practices, there is nobody stopping me from applying for a patent on the wheel, I just won't get it. But my competitors won't know that for a year or two.. -

Re:As least MS Fanboys are consistent, I guess...Have you ever programmed for Windows before in your life? MS goes way out of their way to ensure that legacy API work as expected, to the detrement of the OS itself. Only in recent times have they made consessions of breaking API where security is required.
I'll admit, I've never programmed for Windows. However, MS's compatibility layers don't always work as expected. Consider all the problems people had with their software once XP Service Pack 2 came out. Besides, it's not like the iPod is the only MP3 Player not working with Vista...Apple, on the other hand, wholesale changed their platform in every conceivable fashion. For MacOSX you had to port to Carbon if you wanted to ensure that your apps would work, otherwise it would run in emulation, and that emulator would only handle PowerPC. This means that at the time that MacOSX was launched Apple officially obsoleted every program written six years earlier for the Motorola chipsets.
On Vista I can run software written for DOS/Windows in the mid 80s, without even a recompile. How much software can you claim to run on your Mac in the same way? I fucking thought so.
Ahh, but as you said: Apple changed their platform twice. And each time, it was a great improvement. 68k was pushed to the limits, and PowerPC had hit a wall. x86 really wasn't making great strides in improvements until recently, all they did was increase the clock speed. I'd like to see Windows maintain compatibility when it changes architectures. Remember Windows NT for PowerPC? Did all of the previous non-MS software work on it?If Microsoft has one major failing it is that they have accumulated such a massive amount of legacy support that it has turned the API into a tangled mess.
Agreed. They really need to draw the line at some point. In my opinion, they should drop support for all things prior to WinXP in Vista (or the next OS), and do backwards compatibility in a sandbox, kind of how OS X requires Classic Mode to function with pre-OS 9 software (Yeah, yeah, I know: OS 9 doesn't work on the Intel Macs)Apple has shortcomings, and so does Microsoft. Leave it at that.

Re:Legal Key invalid...
I have to pay the Gateway mafia their payola or download an illegal version of Windows and put my legal key in.
With DRM what you expect and what you get may not be the same. I recall seeing some discussion of the Legal XP key becomming invalidated in the Vista upgrade process.
A quick Google search brings up gems like "Vista will invalidate your XP key (so you won't be able to set up a dual-boot option nor will you be able to use that version of XP on another machine). Not only that, but if you ever uninstall Vista, you won't be able to fall back on your copy of XP anymore. Nice"
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/software/upgrade-to-vis ta-lose-your-xp-key-232647.php
Single vendor copy protected software may not provide you the privilages you expected to recieve when you bought it.

Re:Unacceptable
"They offered to refund people's money. Is that not an acceptable response for a product that doesn't work?
That depends. How far into the installation are these users before they discovered this? Is the former OS no longer bootable? IF that is the case a simple refund does nothing for the customer that was just left high and dry. As I recall, "upgrade" versions of Vista invalidate the key used for previously installed version of Windows (thus making a reinstall a moot point). -

Premature deathThis whole iPhone discussion is mot likely to be irrelevant as they presented it way too early. I discussed this with a friend of mine that works for Sony-Ericsson and apparently both Nokia and Ericsson are capable of crunching out a new model from design to distribution in roughly 2.5 months. I'm guessing that Motorola, Samsung and the others are no worse.
If they are inclined to do so (and given the hype around the iPhone), the established phone developers can come up with something very similar and have it out earlier and at a lower cost. Nokia's Aeon concept looks like a promising candidate to build on as does the Siemens-Benq's Black Box concept. In addition, IIRC the Aeon prototype was fuel cell powered.
At least from a European and especially Japanese perspective the iPhone is already severely outdated. No 3G, no GPS etc? It's a beautiful phone, but the eye candy can be imitated and cloned and used in a better phone. Assuming that the other phone companies are complete nitwits they can easily create a more attractive package and get it out earlier and cheaper.
