Re: Oh Goody
What if they wear sneakers?
A recent news story revealed that US combat boots are actually made in China https://goo.gl/nVgOXz.
Thus, Obama didn't lie when he said he wouldn't put American boots on the ground in Syria.
-
Re:Oh Goody
If the US has launched a land invasion of Syria, that's news to me. A few special forces types in an advisory or training role is not what most people call "boots on the ground" even if it is literally true.
The whole idea of the phrase "boots on the ground" is to make it unambiguous. It's not a metaphor for full-scale invasion; it's a factual description of an event. And since you say you are lacking news, we (the US) just did a 4-jet hour-long attack on Syrian troops. We killed ~83 of them and crippled another 100. They were defending a position against ISIS. When the US planes attacked so did ISIS. ISIS had been trying for months to take that area, and, with the US help, they succeeded.
So what are these 300 or so (Pentagon won't say how many https://goo.gl/K5BVPu) American troops doing in Syria if they are not engaged in combat? They are human shields. We won't tell Russia & Syria where they exactly are, but, of course, Russia knows. We park them next to the moderate cannibals we want to protect.

Re:Fraud
I think people are missing the basic concept of "fraud" and how it invalidates a contractual relationship. Probably a lesson worth learning before you keep getting unlubed penetration from companies for the rest of your life.
You're right and now I'm am totally going to sue Nintendo and Capcom for misleading me with their cover art on Megaman 1. The game didn't look anything like the advertising! https://goo.gl/images/t6Se07
My point being that advertising trying making games [or any product really] look better than they actually are has been going on since Pong and shouldn't surprise anyone. IMO, the complaint against No Man's Sky fits better in the "consumer beware" column than fraud.

Re:It's Politics, Not Conspiracy
Yeah, which is why it's easier to get people to "go green" by emphasizing smart sustainability that makes your home or business more efficient and cheaper to run in the long-term, reduce dependence on the fluctuating cost of fossil fuels, lower impact from the geo-politics related to fossil fuels, reduce air and water pollution, reduce waste and in turn costs associated with removing/treating waste, support advancement of modern technologies and new job opportunities, etc. You don't have to argue against someone's entrenched beliefs about climate change to come to a common ground on the many real benefits of reducing waste and being more efficient. There's a comic that has been out for years that highlights this: https://goo.gl/images/jo99Cr Also, it may be a surprise to some, but one of the biggest supporters of sustainable or "green" practices in the world is Wal-Mart, and it's not because they give shit about the planet, it's because smart sustainable practices reduces their bottom line costs.

Re:As long as they aren't increasing prices...
I use flights.google.com for prices and I have yet to notice any difference in what theysay and what the site says. Nice thing is that some combined flights will have different prices, depending on where you book.
An example https://goo.gl/flights/ngYD
Via Vuelling : 84USD on Google, 70USD on the website
Via Iberia : 107USD on Google. 95USD on the website. As Google is indicative, it is a 25USD difference (30%) for the identical same flight.
I always delete all cookies when I close my brower, so there is that. I only log in to book, not before.Obviously there are different sites that can do it, like Kajak.com, that will check several sites at the same time. I never go to the booking site before I have found a price.

Re:In other news ... "whales" still profitable.
Not sure how much respect avid Pokemon Go players really deserve. Players have been found chasing Pokemon on train tracks, we've had bus drivers playing the game while driving, and a few municipalities that these Pokemon seem to favor for some reason have been forced to put up traffic signs like these to warn motorists about pedestrians who might be paying less than adequate attention. (Sadly some people are "catching" these unusual road signs as well).

Re:Law of unintended consequences, also frostyActually, Zika is pretty serious. For one thing, scientists now believe that even in those pregnant women who were infected who had *apprently* normal babies, those babies may have neurological defects that may not show up immediately. Some of these babies have abnormal brains inside normal-size skulls, and in others the effects may be more subtle but still present.
And also a recent study on adult mice showed that Zika appears to kill their brain stem cells https://goo.gl/zhz7VB.
It's not known whether this might have long-term neurological consequences in humans, and what they might be, because the strain of Zika that causes these neurological problems has not been around that long.
The previously circulating strains do not seem to have caused these problems like microcephaly.

Re:But...
It's a good question, but the phone is not the Xiaomi experience. The full Xiaomi experience is all about hyper-focused customer marketing. See this paper - "Fan-centric social media: The Xiaomi phenomenon in China" (PD: https://goo.gl/f7EZtS)
Abstract:
In this highly competitive century, social media offers both opportunities
and challenges. The concept of social media is top of mind for many entrepreneurs
today. Fans are assuming an increasingly active role in co-creating marketing content
with companies and their respective brands. Based on the Xiaomi success story in
China, we provide a framework for building the power of the fan base and propose a
new fan-centric social media business model. We examine the best practice case
study of an emerging company’s successful efforts to leverage social media in order to
reach an important audience of young consumers. Thereafter, we conclude with
several lessons related to the integration of social media into a new firm’s operation
strategy. We strongly recommend that businesses, and especially startups, make good
use of powerfulsocial media to develop a business model with fan demand asthe core.
This is what we call the ‘fan-centric’ social media business model. -
Re:Canadian Border Guards...
That was probably a random check. I used to live in Point Roberts so had to cross the border a lot (2-6 times a day). The border guard can send you in the line for a more thorough search if they suspect something, but every now and then the computer randomly flags you for a search. It happened to me twice in 2 years on the Canadian side, once on the U.S. side (which was half-hearted when they found out I lived in Point Roberts and was entering mainland Washington to do some shopping). (It's also happened once while flying into the U.S. from Europe - I had checked off nothing to declare, but the computer flagged me so they sent me over to Agriculture and opened up all my bags. The border guard was even apologized for the delay, explaining the computer randomly requires them to send people for a more thorough Customs search.)
They go through everything in your car. For me that was mostly stuff in the glove compartment and center console. Most of it was receipts for gas and fast food that I had never thrown away, but they read through each and everyone one of them one at a time. So I made sure to clean all that junk out of the car after my first search to reduce my wait if I was flagged again (my second random search only took about 20 minutes because of this). If you've got a Suburban packed with camping supplies, it's going to be a long and messy search.
In general, the wait to enter the U.S. is longer and the border guards stricter than when entering Canada. -
Re:Incompetent IT
I used to live in Point Roberts, WA and power was very unreliable. I worked from home half the week, so I bought two UPSes (one for the computer, one for the cable modem and router), and kept a charged car battery in the house with a 12V inverter which would give me by my calculations about 10 hours on my laptop (on top of my laptop's 5 hour battery). I had plans to buy a generator as well.
One day the power went out. The UPS kicked in. Power usually came back within a couple minutes so I kept working. After about 10 min, the UPS began warning it was nearly drained. So I shut down the desktop and switched to my laptop. Unfortunately I hadn't charged it so I got a low battery warning after about an hour. I lugged out the car battery, clamped on the leads for the inverter, plugged the laptop into the inverter, and fired it up. I was back in business again.
Got on the laptop, logged in to work. 30 seconds later the Internet went down. No cable TV as well. The battery keeping the cable company's equipment powered must've died.
You can make all your systems redundant, distributed, and robust. But unless you control all the network lines between you and all the places you need to communicate with, you're not in total control over the reliability of the system. (And if you're curious, I was without power for 3 days. I had to move my refrigerator's contents outside to keep them cool since it was winter, and use a wood stove to keep the house warm and cook my meals. I dropped plans to buy a generator since there was no point if my Internet connection would only last about 90 minutes.) -

Re:Real world
Graphene is a two-dimensional form of carbon in which the atoms are bonded into a honeycomb arrangement. It can readily be prepared by the oxidation, exfoliation, and subsequent reduction of graphite. Graphene is characterized by its unusual electronic properties: It conducts electricity and is rich in electrons that can move freely across the entire layer (delocalized). In aqueous solution, graphene can bind positively charged ions with its electrons (Lewis acid-base interaction). This property is used in graphene-based processes to remove lead ions and organic dyes from solutions. This phenomenon inspired researchers working with Qunwei Tang to use graphene electrodes to obtain power from the impact of raindrops. Raindrops are not pure water. They contain salts that dissociate into positive and negative ions. The positively charged ions, including sodium, calcium, and ammonium ions, can bind to the graphene surface. At the point of contact between the raindrop and the graphene, the water becomes enriched in positive ions and the graphene becomes enriched in delocalized electrons. This results in a double-layer made of electrons and positively charged ions, a feature known as a pseudocapacitor. The difference in potential associated with this phenomenon is sufficient to produce a voltage and current. read more https://goo.gl/H1du35

North and south facades would get about 655 kWh/m2.a
Still, a southern roof with a 30 tilt would get 1230kWh/m2.aConsidering that the 2 top rows won't produce much, if at all, the tower won't produce 30000kWh/year, even with 20% module efficiency and 90% performance ratio.

Re:legalism is a crap philosophy.
Then you drive too fast for the road conditions. The road signs are there to indicate the maximum speed, not the suggested speed. If you drive the maximum speed with dense fog or with ice, you are an idiot that will see the obstacles in summertime as a challenge.
There is snow in Europe as well and this does not seem to be a problem here. Sure, the occasional idiot who sees the obstacles as a challenge will hit them. Better that then a kid. And they either learn or take themselves out of the gene pool.
Remember we are talking about areas where people live, not really roads with high volume of traffic. Here an example of a street : https://goo.gl/maps/gXcAhno61U...
Similar things are on wider streets, all to naturally reduce the speed of the cars. I assure you, you are not going to speed in that street, unless you are really want to challange everyting and then for sure a sign or a toicket will not stop you. At that moment you become a person intending to kill. Impossible? No. Unlikely? Yes.

Re:Sad it's missing....
The ability to add a USB webcam and USB Microphone. This device would be the PERFECT way to get Google Hangouts into the corperate world of small "Huddle" type meeting rooms.
Perfect? I doubt it. It's kind of low-powered for that application. You can add the webcam and microphone, but I doubt the result would be particularly outstanding.
Why is it that Apple and Google never ever thinks of the corporate and company uses for their products?
You mean like Chromebox for Meetings? I have this setup in my home office. Audio and video quality is excellent, automatic integration with Google calendaring is slick, it's very nice. The background photos when not in use are a nice bonus. If you take a look at the photo I linked, you'll notice the on-screen keyboard. That's there only because I popped it up to hide some meeting names; I hardly ever use it. Mostly I just schedule meetings on my calendar and the Hangouts display notifies me when one is coming and I tap the meeting description to join. I can also type meeting names if they're not on my calendar, or I can make phone calls. On the rare occasion I do an audio-only teleconference, I still use the Chromebox system because it's convenient and very high quality.
It could be done with a Chromebit rather than a Chromebox, but it wouldn't be much cheaper ($85 vs $229; not a substantial difference in the corporate world), and I doubt performance would be as good.
