Earphones vs. Headphones
I thought the "headphones" that come with the iPods are "earphones."
Earphones: http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:VVjQqCzDOcoJ: www.avland.co.uk/beyer/dtx20/dtx20lrg.jpg
Headphones: http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:3gBOP5ZlJiIJ: www.turntablelab.com/headphones/pics/sony-
THOSE are headphones.
Besides...Wearing earphones hurts your ears more than headphones because the earphones blast sound into your ear while headphones blast sound OUTSIDE of your ear. Though...it wouldn't make a difference if you're the type that turns up the volume up to the max all of the time. -

Re:And evolution is?
His viewpoint has something to do with a science, whereas yours doesn't.
Take a look at some of these definitions for "science":
http://www.google.ca/search?client=firefox-a&rls=o rg.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial_s&hl=en&q=define%3A+ science&meta=&btnG=Google+Search
You'll find I used "a process for evaluating empirical knowledge", as required by the Wikipedia definition. I also "systematically acquired knowledge that is verifiable", as required by Oregon State University. I'd say what I did had a great deal to do with science. It just didn't come to a conclusion you wanted to hear. Just because it's an observation from my driveway over a couple of years doesn't make it any less scientific than a government-funded research group digging huge holes in the desert. I admit, my chances of publication are significantly smaller, however..... -

Feh!Last summer, I was photographing old "fishbowl" buses in Ottawa, Ontario. Whithin minutes, I was hassled by transit security who were adamant that I identify myself. After telling them that they had no reason nor right to demand I identify myself, they told me that I could go, but not without calling the city cops on me.
Within minutes, I was hassled by a very hot and loud bitch cop (120 dB of pure bitchery and 120 pounds of hot chick). Within minutes I was surrounded by 6 cops and transit security.
During the ensuing shouting match, none was ever able to say what illegal act I had committed. I eventually gave my (cellphone) number to the bitch
;)6 months later, a "national security division" cop of the RCMP calls me on the cellphone and wants to talk to me.
- This is a cellphone.
- Oh. Sorry. Well, call me at 555-555-5555.
Not being stupid, I make sure I don't call him from $ORKPLACE. They're the police, so they surely can find my home number in the phone directory, no? And if they check google with my name, they can find I'm a transit buff, no?
Well, I guess not. And if they are doing "national security" investigations, 6 months later is pretty fast, I guess...

Ignorance of the Law...the law of demand and answer?
Google on the law of demand and answer. It would seem the law of demand and answer doesn't register. Maybe it's outside the law, maybe an outrage. "I demand an answer", with an implied, or else I'll tell my Mom!
Maybe it's the law of the hidden CIA prisons, but, surely, if it's the law, well then, as we demand so shall we receive an answer.

So what are your conversations like now?
"Welcome home honey."
*Runs off to computer.*
*Googles really long words.

"Gynotikolobomassophile!"
"What's that dear?"
"One who likes to nibble on a woman's earlobe."
"Ooooh, has someone been a naughty gynotikolobomassophile today? Come here. Oh ya, that's the spot, right there..."I apologize for the ending, my creative writing skills are lacking at best.

Who really poisoned Kosh?
I still want to know who was really behind the poison attack on Kosh in The Gathering, but I guess it's a bit late to learn more about Vorlon internal politics, although the comment about "losing a line of dialogue about one reason for the Vorlons's obvious paranoia about their biology" perks my interest.

Re:Isn't that called COMFREY
This plant comfrey is a nitrogen fixing bush. It grows quickly and can deal with a fair bit of peeing on. It can be cut back heavily and spreads well by the roots. It makes a good corner or compost heap plant and has medicinal qualities.
It uses lots of nitrogen in leaf growth, so it uses nitrogen rich pee as fertilizer. It would be good in areas people pee.
PS: A community building here has some type of no flow urinal, it works great and is clean, in spite of the steady beer sales. -
Re:Actually...
One consideration though, is the relative economic efficiency, taking into account the energy source.
I'm not sure how things work in your neck of the woods, but according to my bills I'm currently paying:
$0.06/kWh -- electrical
$12.18/GJ -- natural gas
Assuming I've done my math right, and I'd appreciate someone checking my work, it's been a long time since I did this crap in school... But according to Google at my current kWh I'm paying $16.67/gigajoule for electrical energy.
However, for Natural Gas, I'm paying less, so even if the overall heating system is less energy efficient (due to heat lost in the exhaust process), it's still more economically efficient.
Yes this is a selfish way to look at it, but depending on the source of your electricity, it may or may not be ecologically sound. -
Re:Actually... in Canada, too
I'm fairly certain that SETS' tankless water heaters do in fact use a conventional electric element to provide heated water on demand.
My Dad works at a place that sells these in Canada, and has been selling them for a while (not sure how long exactly, but well over a year). Not the microwave variety like the story talks about, but the electric variety like SETS. He says they work quite well, but it does take people some time to "accept" them.
There are a decent amount of this variety out now, it appears. And if they're being sold at Home Depot to your average Joe, then I'd say that at least the electric version of this technology is mature enough.
I would buy one if my water heater wasn't working so darn well right now (I hope I didn't just sentence my water heater to a premature death).

Essentialism is a lie.
"Women and men are different. I know that is not a popular opinion, but the boobies and the having kids thing kinda comes to mind."
That's a nice, provable biological difference.
"Maybe I'm just traditional or old fashioned, but I see women/females as being more nurturing, emotional, and less competitive and authoritarian than men."
Now, is that a product of biology, or a product of the surroundings in which a woman is raised? You don't know. No one does.
Women and men are equivalent in every sense that matters. To say that someone is aggresive because they have a penis is the same thing as saying someone is pleasant because they have a vagina. To say that someone is good with money because they are a jew, or that someone is less intelligent because they are black -- these are all features of a theory called essentialism. Essentialism says that someone is a certain way because of their biology, not their own free will, their experiences, or how they were raised.
I think we should take a serious look at how women are raised and how we expect them to behave (Google search for pleasant; note how the 2nd hit is for a doll maker called "American Girl"!), rather than use biological means to justify differences. Essentialism is a lie that people like Adolf Hitler used to justify terrible attrocities. For you to pipe up in support of essentialism is a mark of how little you have researched your own opinions. -

6-7 years? Try 20The phrase "Imminent death of usenet predicted" was a popular in-crowd joke back as far as 1985, because people were incessantly predicting that Usenet was going to die. And of course it still hasn't, and it won't.
Unfortunately the oldest reference I could find on google was only from 1989, but it'll have to do. The fact that it's sigged should be a clue that the fearmongering was already a meme then.

Re:Some people already do this!
There is a good deal of evidence that sugar and refined carbohydrates and other modern foods affect whatever it is that causes teeth and dental arches to grow properly. This is not about their immediate effect on the tissues of your mouth, this about their effect inside your body, impairing it's ability to develop properly.
Of course, no one wants to give up their sugar or white bread (unless it's part of a fashionable but short lived diet plan atkins) so no one really listens:

Re:Talk to those that wrote it down?
If I recall corectly, the Pentateuch was writen by Moses as dictated to him by God. This includes Genesis. The great flood is supposed to have happened around 2,200 BC from what I can find, so year, we'd need a WABAC to ask him. Or maybe a phone booth.

Targetted results
Well, as a Canadian whenever I hit the google site I'm redirected to the google.ca site. When I was in Australia on holidays I believe it was google.com.au
Now my brain may be fuzzy, but I believe that various searches would tailor items for the area... try it.
You'll notice that the advertising banners are different. For me it came up with a banner for woolworth's. Throw a little more info in there and perhaps in the future it would be grabbing stores based on proximity, such as displaying city local results first, then regional, state/province, and national/intercontinental. It's not part of the main search results but such an idea still has relevence.
Personally, such usage isn't a big deal to me. The only think I worry about is that when I'm studying a topic on perhaps a song or whatever and google caches that as my search, then somebody requests said info when trying to nail me for music piracy (which I bother with anyways, but I'm sure there might be something similar). -
How can there be better bargains?

Re:Already available..
Yeah, FPGAs are indeed slower than ASICs. How long would it be useful? I was imagining if it ever got popular (like in every gamer's computer) they'd be upgradeable like video cards and CPUs where every year the technology gets better and frequencies go up.
I got the idea when I saw the work done on the saarcor hardware realtime raytracing architecture. They tested their work using FPGAs. -
Why We Don't Really Need To Worry
You can tell an emerging technology is approaching escape velocity because leading thinkers start to react. Discussions about the very real near future possibility of AI matching and then rapidly surpassing human level intelligence are edged with fear lately.
I think we have little to worry about in general regarding the abuse and misuse of AI.
A singular AI would not advance very much locked up in some lab computer. Not compared to open source, distributed, networked AI anyway.
One good open source AI project would be downloaded and copied countless times by thousands of individuals. Communicating with other AIs would be how they would expand their skills and knowledge.
It is in the networking of intelligence that intelligence compounds to greater power. And that would be have to be distributed. The alternative means the AI would only have humans to interact with, not other AIs. And it will be the AIs which will become superior to human intelligence.
Meanwhile, the thrust of technology is driven by innovation. In an ever quickening loop, technology inherently accelerates in speed and power, driven by innovators looking for better ways to do things.
But not only the acceleration of technology is driven by innovation. The direction it takes is too.
The direction of technological progress can be summed up according to the simple rules Abraham Maslow laid out.
http://www.google.ca/search?hl=en&q=%22Maslow's+Hi erarchy+of+Needs%22&meta
Our ever gnawing hunger to survive, thrive and self actualize. To live in security, without fear, to realize our potential as beings.
All new innovations and progress MUST address these needs. Otherwise they aren't considered progress. Innovation MUST meet our criteria for progress as we COLLECTIVELY define it. Bad and mean AI would receive the same collective support as a new car with square wheels. That means a life affirming direction is inextricably woven into technological progress.
The AI's which will be warmly received, and improved upon will be the ones which help us reach our potential as beings. These will be the ones which will grow in power and replicate to quickly dwarf the puny attempts to create a controlling AI.
While the rise of viable self replicating artificial intelligence may strike minds with madness, it needn't. AI won't see you as a threat or need to eat you.
That's what my programmers believe anyway, as long as they keep doing what they're told... -

DeepFreeze
Testing a PC game has been impossible.
It is not "impossible" in the context of the article. My local Radio Shack (which was since rebranded to Circut City) installed games on a computer to show that it worked.
Anyone can rig their own trial system for use in store: a PC with DeepFreeze installed immediatly takes care of the software portion - it may have a performance hit in extreme situations, but is fixed by a quick reset.
The hardware will be a bit tricky, as you can't use some random $10 keyboard and mouse - they have to be a rugged keyboard and a rugged mouse (there's a rugged joystick available, but that's optional.)
The remaining portion is the copy-protection in most games... Most computers have two IDE chains with two devices a-piece - that means you have three random games available per day, plus other things you can stuff on the computer. -
