Re:Does it actually make standard SVGs yet?
Please compare
http://home.hccnet.nl/th.v.d.gronde/inkscape/ResultViewer.html
to
http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/batik/status.html
My standards actually are based on some standard.
I was excited when I saw 'svg test suite compliance' in the release notes, then I looked at the test results. The omit a large portion of them and fail a massive chunk of them.
A new feature in the release notes is 'Initial SVG font support'
... Inkscape is roughly the same as using Frontpage 2000 to make web pages. Sorry I got your fanboy panties in a bunch, but reality sucks sometimes. -
Re:nerd pedantry
No, no, that's d6 mod 3. Same probability, but a different die. This is a set of 3-sided dice.

Re:Core functions vs Drivers?
What about the different code bases for each architecture that are only used on that architecture?
Linux runs on LOTS of architectures, and variants of architectures, and each one of those takes code to make it run, but not all of it is compiled into the target architecture. Here's an incomplete list: http://home.hccnet.nl/p.van.deurzen/linuxweb/docs/architectures.htm
Maybe its complete, but it doesn't include things like the (maybe now defunct) 16bit port that existed a few years ago, and I didn't see the coreboot Linux smashed into a bios chip.
Linus' masters thesis was titled "Linux, a portable Operating System". If he didn't then, I surely would give him an A today.

Re:Unlike the state of Florida or parts of itFrom experience, I know there are plenty of ways to do streaming video in a non proprietary way that work fine in WMP, QT and other native video players... Never install Quicktime player on a Windows PC since there's a better alternative. (without incurring the insane streaming server licensing costs charged by Real, Adobe and Microsoft ...and Apple.

Re:Ahem...
ffdshow has crashed my player (Winamp) a few times, enough that I disabled it for the format I was trying to play. (And it was ffdshow, not Winamp; files played fine once it was out of the picture.)
Any software can be dangerous. Most codec packs are not, however, unless they include spyware with them. From personal experience, to my knowledge the Kazaa Lite codec pack in its various incarnations as downloaded from the edskes mirrors don't contain any. -

Sorta innovative softwareI don't know about innovative, but here's some worthwhile Windows-only (AFAIK) software:
- mIRC - the best IRC client, although this isn't necessarily saying much. The (unlicensed) Excursion variant of it adds some good features.
- AutoGK - great free software for making DVD-rips in DivX or XviD.
- Daemon Tools - CD/DVD-ROM emulator/image mounter with anti-DRM features.
- Real Alternative/Media Player Classic - like many other suggestions here, this one corrects a problem with Windows, namely the super-heavy, overcomplicated new Windows Media Player. This one has a classic look and support for Real media files, thus also solving the problem of the even worse Realplayer.
- Nero Burning ROM - like Toast only it doesn't make that stupid toaster sound.
- The GodFather - audio file manager/tagger with support for retrieving tags and cover images from a number of online databases.

Re:They're own player.
bah... why install all that crap anyways? K-Light Mega Codec Pack has EVERYTHING to play ANYTHING. They will add googles as needed, I'm sure. K-Light Download Page So personally I don't care if Apple or MS adds GoogleDRM (tm) too their players... I wont install their bloatware on my computer to begin with and I can play their files just fine
:) -
Best free solution.
The best one-stop solution is the K-Lite Mega Codec pack:
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm
It includes Media Player Classic (the best player for Windows, also available from here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/ ), and a bunch of codecs, including the DVD, XViD, DivX and Quicktime codecs. That site is the official one (with the content hosted on edskes.com), but beware of spyware-laden versions on other sites that require you to "register" or "donate".
Note that some of the contents are technically illegal in the US as no licence fees have been paid for a few of the codecs that use MPG principals. Which is why it's hosted offshore and also why it shouldn't be charged for. It's also infinitely more useful than any commercial offering.
The other famous codec pack is the Gordian Knot codec and ripper packs, but I don't think they are sufficient to play DVDs:

Re:please be quicktime
Windows Media Player 9 (ugh) actually plays rather nicely with Mozilla. For Real and Quicktime, try Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative. They both work very well.

Re:Interpretive languages at fault?
You know, this guy, Knuth, has some similar ideas about being a programmer (see this Dr Dobb's interview: http://home.hccnet.nl/h.vink/lead.htm).
I guess he is just a saddo too, who does not have the necessary skillset or something. -
Re:Apple not so saintly given QuickTime task
Any body know why I need the qttask.exe running all the time?
You don't. Go install QuickTime Alternative instead.

playing videos on Windows
If you're on Windows, you want the K-Lite Codec Pack ; this collection of codecs (& Media Player Classic) will let you play just about anything you're likely to come across. Plus you can play QuickTime and RealMedia files in MPC, and not have to use their respective crappy players.
If you're having trouble playing that Star Wars Episode 3 trailer you just downloaded, this'll to watch it just fine. -
Re:Video link
Real Alternative is your friend.
:) -
Re:Quicktime is cross-platform
as a lot of posters noted there's still a standalone version somewher eat apple's.
......BUT to make a long story short:
use QT altenative, which installs the QT codecs and the excelent media player classic.....
Even with the 'pro' registration the quicktime player is incredibly bloated and for sure one of the worst media player available on any kind of system.
just as an example, the fullscreen 'feature' is just a shame:
- you need to register to get it
- if registered, you need to click on the view menu, choose 'present the video' and then choose 'fullscreen' in a pop-up dropdown list---no shortcut !!
- don't even think about fullscreen controls ....on win xp it's the slowest-ugliest viewing experience, one could kill to get mplayer instead of this fuckedupware -

What the hell is 'ram' format
Who in their right mind decides to publish media in RealMedia format?? Seriously? I'm really, really sick of that real stuff. Anyway, I found a decent solution... use Real Alternative on Windows (contains a simple media player and real codecs!) or the heavenly RealPlayer for Linux.
-
Re:And the less obvious
Startup Monitor. Priceless for dealing with crap like Real or Quicktime that always want to setup stubs to run at boot. The popup warning is pretty non-descriptive, though.
Quicktime Alternative and Real Alternative are even more priceless for the same purpose. No QT or Real crap AT ALL.
Get them both from the Final Builds site (Don't let the horrible page put you off, it's reliable software =)

It's obvious what happened

Real Alternative
I have found an alternative to the constant plague of problems with RealPlayer.
It's called Real Alternative. The idea is that it only installs the Real codec and nothing else (although they do have a lightweight player and Mozilla plugins if you want)
Although their site is a little cluttered, their software isn't.
Real Alternative -
some real examples
You can actually see them here: http://home.hccnet.nl/NETURNIA.WALLPAPERS/lotr/

Re:I Wish
Download the whole shebang here in a nice easy to install 19 meg installer. Seems to have some weird skipping problems with some AVIs but otherwise is solid.
-
Re:I Wish
People don't want to download zillions of packages and mess around with them in order to be able to view their video files.
For people that don't want to download a bunch of different software packages there's the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack. It includes Media Player Classic, Real/Quicktime Alternative, BS Player, and pretty much every codec you'd ever need. -
You already can
It's called mplayer. For the Windows users, use Media Player Classic with Real Alternative (among other download sites).
-
Re:Not sought any patents?
I'm assuming you're on Windows...
Real alternative - al Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer or RealOne Player. Supported are: RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp). It also supports RealMedia content that is embedded in webpages. RealMedia .smi and .smil files are not fully supported, only the first part will usually be played. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic. The RealMedia Browser plugin supports Internet Explorer, Opera, Mozilla and Netscape. -
Re:Scott Richter
HA!
That was great for a Friday laugh!
And don't let the Real player keep you away, get Real Alternative if you don't already have it. -
Great idea for a thread
This is a great idea for a thread. I'm assuming this is after I've downloaded the eight jillion patches for Windows I need, but in no particular order:
- A virus scanner (This definitely comes first!)
- WinRAR (I should look into 7-Zip, though.)
- Firefox (and a few choice extensions)
- Thunderbird (I love sharing one mailbox between two operating systems.)
- Filezilla
- Trillian
- iTunes
- Various programs for web development
- OpenOffice.org
- Real Alternative (Screw you, Real! I don't need to take your crap any more!)
-
Re:A list
Winzip - Yeah, you know what this is
Try Winrar, it's so much easier for navigating and extracting zip files. Someone else mentioned 7-zip, gotta try that too.Editplus - Possibly the best editor ive found, not free im afraid, costs around $25
Try TextpadVLC - Free media player
That works for DVDs/VCDs, but I prefer Media Player Classic for other formats (MPG, Divx, Quicktime, Real, etc.)SmartFTP - Great free for personal use FTP client, not found a better one yet!
I found it awkward. Filezilla is much nicer to use and open source. -
Can you say sucky?
For those using Windows, here is the Real Alternative. If you are running Linux, mplayer will play a Real stream just fine, thanks. Unfortunately for MacOS people, the only thing that will play a Real stream is RealPlayer. Or mplayer if you take the trouble to recompile the source code for Darwin.
-
Re:Interestingly...
Personally I'd settle for being ablt to view Real files using VLC.
Realplayer and Quicktime files can be viewed on other players using Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative respectively. -
Casio VL-Tone
Oh, the fun I used to have with a Casio VL-Tone twenty or so years ago. I was playing keyboards in a sort of psychedelic funk band (think XTC meets Parliament) and though my main keyboards were a Farfisa Mini-Compact, a Roland Juno 106, and an Ensoniq Mirage, a pair of VL-Tones were part of my gear.
Despite tone generators worthy of a Nokia cell phone, a rhythm box that made a 606 sound like John Bonham, and a four-banger calculator to boot, they sounded like God's Own Voice when run through a Roland Space Echo, an Electro Harmonix Memory Man, various fuzz boxes and guitar effect pedals, and an Ampeg bass amp driving an 18" speaker.
For purely visual effect, I'd have my roadies duct tape one to each of my forearms for that Casio Borg effect. We used the cheesy rhythm box sounds as a click track for one of our songs (our drummer was steady enough to keep in sync without a headphone feed).
Playing melodies on those tiny chicklet keys was a bitch, though, especially after a few backstage drinks.

Speak of the devil...
I was just mulling over the thought of installing the new Real Player to see if they got over the insane tentacleware complex they seem to have given RP9. According to the reviews on download.com, apparently not. Looks like it'll continue to be Real Alternative for me!
-
Real alternativeThey should just put up a link to Real Alternative.
It plays Real files, and if you download the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, everything else too (Quicktime, Divx, Ogg, etc.).
It also includes Media Player Classic, which is a very nice player that picks up where Windows Media Player 6 left off.
-
Re:Don't Cross The StreamsYup. Just installed Real Alternative last night to watch, er, some "educational" videos I downloaded. It automatically installed the latest version of Media Player Classic, installed all the codecs needed for viewing Real stuff without forcing me to install any version of Real. Haven't tried the browser integration yet, but it offered to install it.
This seems to be the official site for downloading, but I found several faster sites in google.
-
Don't Cross The Streams
From Real: We think our new RealPlayer 10 is, beyond a doubt, our friendliest and best player yet.
Nice to know that I can listen to Click and Clack on my computer without being constantly bombarded with pop-ups from a piece of annoyware.
Oh wait, I've been doing that for weeks thanks to Real Alternative. All the joy of streaming audio without Real's player. -
Re:Real's website, program and license feels dirty
Try Real Alternative (realalt121.exe somewhere down the list). It's just the Real codecs plus Media Player Classic, a GPL clone of the old Windows Media Player 6.4. You might also be interested in Quicktime Alternative on the same page. And from MS, you can get the WMV9 codecs for Media Player 6.4 by selecting "Codecs Installation Packages" on this page. Finally, for DIVX/XVID/3VID, you'll want ffdshow-alpha, ac3filter, and DIVX audio (link 6 on the page).
-
Re:Bloated
Real Player used to be a simple piece of audio (then later video) playing software. Now its becomeiwng one of those applications that wants to dominate your system and do everything from playing media to making eggs.
Your best bet is to download Real Alternative. It bundles the Realplayer Codecs (the newest 10.0 version) with the simple Media Player Classic UI, so you can watch and listen to Realplayer content without the annoying popups and spyware. -
Re:Sad..
And here are some URLs:
Real Alternative & Quicktime Alternative (middle of the page)
Media Player Classic (again, middle of the page)Enjoy!

can't find the free player? neither can "car talk"from http://cartalk.com/Radio/windowsmedia-switch.html
:
Car Talk will now be available via the Windows Media Player, rather than RealMedia. That's right, we're unceremoniously dumping RealMedia.
Why? Because, for a long time, we've had tons of complaints about RealNetworks. And the one that ticks us off the most is the perceived trickery they use to sell their premium products. This is just our opinion, mind you, but it's shared by enough of our listeners, that we finally decided to take action.
Here's the problem. In order to hear our audio, you have to go to Real.com and download their "free" RealPlayer. But when you get to the web site, the free player is harder to find than Osama Bin Laden at night. And the site seems to do everything it possibly can to get you to "buy" a player instead. You have to work very hard to get the free player. And we think that stinks. And get this. It stinks so much that it even makes Microsoft look good by comparison. That's something, huh?
We've heard from many of our fans that have been duped, and who have accidentally shelled out their hard-earned dineros. And we won't even get into the ways that the RealPlayer tries to take over your computer once you install it. So, after surveying the alternatives, we're switching to Windows Media Player (which works on Macs, too).
For those of you who don't yet have the Windows Media Player installed, you can get it for Windows--for free--at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window smedia/9ser ies/player.aspx
And for Mac--for free--at:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/window smedia/soft ware/Macintosh/osx/default.aspx for OS X or
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/ down load/mac71.aspx for OS 8.1 and up
Listening to Car Talk is painful enough by itself. You don't need more angst. If you'd rather take Car Talk with you, you can also download the show anytime by clicking on the Audible link at:
http://www.cartalk.com/Radio/Show/ (Cheapskate alert: fee *definitely* involved.)
when major broadcasters are dumping real's products due to their "betcha can't find the free version" antics, maybe real would wisen up and actually make good on their "free" players.
not that i care - real alternative and media player classic take care of my windows-based media viewing just fine, minus all the spyware and other crap. -
What about Real Alternative?
I would imagine that it is not affected... perhaps this is a good time to plug it. Get it from here. Just Media Player Classic is also available.
-
So they want you to get the new version? It seems there are no fixes for old versions and you have to get the latest one. This sucks. I hate getting new RealPlayer versions because you always have to wonder what crap they've added in the next version.
Has anybody tried Real Alternative?
-
Yet another reason to not use it, and use this...
Real Alternative in Media Player Classic. The version I use on XP has some flaws, but it is better than nothing, and I hope doesn't have the same flaws as the REAL Real Player?
-
Alternative RealPlayer
I found a program called "Real Alternative" that plays Real video files on MSWindows. I think I first found it from another Slashdot post. It works well without any of the bad stuff of the official players from Real.
From the installer notes:
---
More information and updates can be found on the following websites:
http://www.freecodecs.com
Now a "Coming Soon. But domains from us" page
http://mirror.edskes.com
Redirects to http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm that has downloads available
Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files. This way you can play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player. You do need a player that is capable of playing RealMedia. The included Media Player Classic supports it and works very well.
Supported:
- RealAudio (.ra .rpm)
- RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil)
- RealText (.rt)
- ReadPix (.rp)
- RealMedia embedded in webpages .smi and .smil files only play the first part of a clip. This is a limitation of the current Media Player Classic.
---
The player says it is GPL by "Gabest". He has programs at http://sourceforge.net/projects/guliverkli/. He wrote the "Media Player Classic" that RealAlt extends.
-
Why do I need another media player?
I play all my media files with Media Player Classic and BS Player . I also use Real Alternate and Quicktime Alternate. I just dont see the reason why I would want to install another media player (unless I really wanted bloatware/spyware).
-
Re:I've got a better idea
A newer version can be found here, as well as lots of other interesting stuff...Including an alternative QuickTime player.
http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm
-
But a few are...
There are good media players out there, you just need to know what to look for and where.
Media Player Classic (MPC) is a shining example of a solid, simple player with a good feature set.
Since you're probably interested in being able to play most video formats, you'll want to download Real Alternative and Quicktime Alternative to save you the hassle of installing the invasive Quicktime and Real players. Both QT and Real alternative are codecs rather than full blown players, and allow you to view their respective video formats in MPC.
Top it off with the DivX and XviD codecs, and you should be able to play pretty much anything under the sun with the exception of DVDs.
Unfortunatly I don't know of a free codec that can play DVDs, thanks to the RIAA's work on DeCSS. If you have a registered DVD decoder package, you'll probably be able to use MPC with it's supplied codec.
You can now play all your videos in a single place without sacraficing your privacy.
I hope that helps. -
Thanks, But No Thanks
Dear Real Networks,
I'd really love to use your bloated, ugly player. Unfortunately I don't support spammers. Especially ones that distribute malware that not only takes over a user's media file associations without their consent but constantly phones home and nags them about upgrading.
No, I think I'll stick with Real Alternative should I ever need to play a file that some misguided fool has encoded using your POS codec.
-
