Re:Spreading division is profitable I guess
Was that determined to be true? I just read none of the GhostBuster movies where theatrically released in China for that reason.

That said, near the bottom of the story, written almost as a throwaway line, is
Sony isn't commenting, but a Hollywood source with knowledge of the situation says the film hasn't been officially submitted for approval by Chinese regulators.

Why deny science because a celebrity said so?
Dan Quayle? The man who spoke out against single mothers? Remember when Murphy Brown stopped her hit TV show, broke character, and spoke directly to him and all the misogynist bigots just like him, vigorously defending single mothers?
History judges such people harshly.
Really? I can find no less a liberal site than the Washington Post defending Quayle. Here's what Quayle actually said, BTW, since you didn't bother to quote it and instead prefer to let us imagine something far worse:
“Bearing babies irresponsibly is simply wrong,” the vice president said. “Failing to support children one has fathered is wrong. We must be unequivocal about this. It doesn’t help matters when prime-time TV has Murphy Brown, a character who supposedly epitomizes today’s intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.”
The article goes on to point out that yes, single parents are on the rise and it's harmful to the children, and this is backed by scientific research.
Second, a wealth of research strongly suggests that marriage is good for children. Those who live with their biological parents do better in school and are less likely to get pregnant or arrested. They have lower rates of suicide, achieve higher levels of education and earn more as adults. Meanwhile, children who spend time in single-parent families are more likely to misbehave, get sick, drop out of high school and be unemployed.
This raises the question: why are you denying science based on the word of a has-been celebrity like Murphy Brown?

Re:I don't get it
I personally find T's statements about his daughters similarly disturbing. Perhaps you judge it differently, so be it.
Why don't you don't write them down side-by-side for comparison, then?
Further, there's no evidence Disney knew about Gunn's worse tweets. You can fault Disney for not vetting well, but that's a different "sin". You don't appear to be thinking this through.
You aren't thinking it through. People like James Gunn don't occur in a vacuum. There's a culture in Pedowood.
So now PC is back? Looks like hypocrisy to me.
You're equating being against the normalization of pedophilia and not buying the "just jokes!" when a man repeatedly "jokes" about how he likes to rape kids in Pedowood as "PC"? Looks like you're a scumbag to me.

Re:Recycling solution:
They promoted Trump and changed the subject to Trump every time anyone talked about anything else during the campaign. They did this to ensure Hillary's opponent would be Trump, because they were sure Hillary could beat Trump.
Or... and stay with me here, they promoted trump because as the first reality show candidate all the drama and over-the-top absurdity made them tons of money. As Les Moonves famously said, "It May Not Be Good for America, but It's Damn Good for CBS"

Awful people
I guess 4th grade was too hard for your tiny, tiny brain. Every time you post your mindless dribble it lowers the I.Q. of the entire Internet.
You got modded down, but your comment is spot on.
The left has been just relentlessly awful the past couple of weeks, and the bad part is that it'll only get worse as the midterms get closer.
Trump's son posts a picture enjoying father's day with his kid, and gets a torrent of insults. Trump's daughter shares a picture cuddling her infant son and triggers a tidal wave of hatred.
To believe some celebrities, the US is torturing children at the border right now! It's exactly the same as nazi concentration camps, young children are ripped (note: actual word used) from their mothers and held in cages by the hundreds!
If we could find a way to harness hatred we could run the entire country off of leftist ideals.

Ad hominem fallacy much?
You DO realize that both sides, Democrats AND Republicans, dislike movies, right?
/sarcasm Because the political leanings of the viewer determine if a movie is good or not -- and not the script, director, execution, pacing, editing, etc. -

Maybe he stays because they don't like him.
Maybe they figure the best way to keep him from getting reelected is to let him keep talking. Were they pro-Trump, they might be like his staff and try to keep him from talking (see 60 minutes interview).

I few of them did
but that's not why he won. He won on economic populism; by promising the government would solve people's problems. His speeches where chock full of socialist rhetoric. Those ideas are overwhelmingly popular, it's just people don't like to admit to them. It's like this: get a room full of people together and ask them what kind of coffee they like and they'll tell you they want a bold, rich roast. But look at coffee says and what people actually drink and, well, you've got Starbucks frappachinnos and the like. See here. Yeah, it's a Ted Talk, and worse Malcolm Gladwell, but his points are solid (also not his).
tl;dr; It's not racism, it's the economy stupid. That's important because if you start thinking it's racism you'll try to solve the wrong problem, and Trump and his ilk will keep on winning. -

Re:Neuromancer
There was a attempt to turn Neuromancer in to a movie around 1986/7: King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp reported that he had started work on music for the soundtrack.
In August it was reported that Deadpooldirector Tim Miller is to direct an adaptation of Neuromancer for Fox. I think some King Crimson music would go very well e.g. Level Five as title music.

CBS legal exec "not even sympathetic"
Hayley Geftman-Gold, a legal executive at CBS, wrote on Facebook,
If they wouldn't do anything when children were murdered I have no hope that the Repugs will ever do the right thing. I'm actually not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are republican gun toters.
"not even sympathetic bc country music fans often are republican gun toters"? What kind of ethics are taught at law school these days?
I'm happy to say that CBS fired her.

Re: Don't user created memes fall under fair use?
They can change their minds yes, but you missed the earlier part of the article:
That being said, fair use may protect some fan creations from being an infringement, but that is handled on a case-by-case basis, looking at the facts of the actual work.
Did you ever hear about the 'artist' who put together a gallery of screenshots of different peoples Instagram photos? He's been in court previously for claims of copyright infringement wrt using someone elses work as the basis for his... and he won.
The law on this (and precedent)... is interesting, and not quite as clear cut as most thing.

Re:Quoting family viewing act summaryYou seem to ignore the term "authorized copy". VidAngel got their copies from ripping DVDs. That is not an authorized copy for distribution or redistribution. That is an authorized copy for archival purposes. From the arguments in June:
Hurwitz seemed skeptical. "The central issue for me is
... you're not transmitting from the one that you actually bought from them," he said. "You're transmitting from a copy that you've ripped. ... Why is that 'from an authorized copy' language not fatal to your claim?"Also you seemed to ignore "no fixed copy of the altered version". If they ripped it and then made changes it to, VidAngel violated both (1) and (2)

Not Fakes
This is the best advertisement HBO can get. Probably a staged 'hack' intended to get more media coverage. Anyone who goes to the trouble to find this is almost certainly a watching fan already and will undoubtedly watch the download and then binge on past episodes, then watch the new stuff, posting to twitter and Facebook all the way along. I've read the song of fire and ice as well as the wildcards trust for a long time, but I've never actually seen an episode on HBO.
That is extremely unlikely--less than 1%. Generally a bad idea to directly fake being a victim of a crime. It can easily get you arrested if you do it wrong. (Most obviously by making any false reports to authorities). It can also make you look incredibly bad if anyone finds out. In this case, we know the FBI is already involved in the investigation and lying to FBI agents is a crime.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.c...
In addition, HBO just doesn't need to go to such lengths for more media coverage for Thrones. It's a viral phenomenon. If you don't hear about it, you're living under a rock.

Creative differencesThough they formerly collaborated on 21 Jump Street & a Lego movie, Lord and Miller sounds more like a high end Mall clothing outlet for teens than the directors of the Han Solo movie.
Rumors being reported suggest their attempt to interject revisionism into the Solo character were not appreciated by Lawrence Kasdan.
Kasdan is the screenwriter behind The Empire Strike Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and this movie (with his son, Jon).

Re:Time to cancel netflix
Here's one site showing domestic box office totals. It shows attendance is actually decreasing slowly since 2001, but revenues are basically holding steady (thanks to higher ticket prices).
And Here's an article about 2015 numbers showing that global box office revenues hit a record $38B+ that year.
Over here, a sound-bite box mentions that (presumably domestic) revenues from at-home movie-viewing surpassed the box office in 2015 (11B to 10B).
So, AFAICT, the movie industry is whining about something that isn't a true problem: their box-office revenues are higher than ever, and they're even making more money on home viewing (the legal kind that people have to pay for) than they're making in theaters. Another sound-bite box at that last link mentions cinema advertising, so they (not sure which 'they') are making even more money that way, since you can't ad-block ads in a cinema; who knows how much they're pulling in from that. So for them to complain about piracy smacks of pure greed. "We're making more money than ever, but it's not enough! People are stealing our content and it must stop!"

Re:ESPN?
There you go, Hollywood. I just gave you some ideas for a Captain Planet remake movie.
Oh dear. This might actually be happening.
One thing intriguing to Paramount and Appian Way was the subversive take by Matt and Powell on the material: Sources say the story takes place years after the adventures of the show, with the Captain now a washed-up has-been who needs the kids more than they need him.
Wow. You try to parody Hollywood, and they just outdo you.

Re:My how have the tables turned
In particular, Youtube and Spotify seem to be raking money hand-over-fist. Daniel Elk, founder of Spotify comes to mind as someone benefitting disproportionately from other people's work. But that's tricky. He is arguably helping artists. I'm not sure he's helping us to the tune of $400M dollars, though.
And this is where you're mistaken in a whole lot of things. First, Spotify's revenue is about $200M US a year. It's actually posting a loss, meaning there's no profit at the end of that. Ek's worth is based off what investors think Spotify is worth as a company, which really has little to do with what you're paid, which is a function of revenue they bring in minus musicians payouts, which appears to be a sizable portion of what they're bringing in.
At the moment, the safe harbor provision prevents anyone (artists, record labels, etc.) from suing an OSP (online service provider) for any customer/member hosting one's music without permission. Think for a moment about who the OSPs are and you might realize that they are not your favorite companies either.
OSPs aren't my favorite, but they have little to nothing to do with your situation. Take Spotify above, even if they paid all their revenue to musicians, you'd still be bitching. I say that because apparently that's about what Spotify is doing today. You make say that they're not paying enough and charge them more, but all that happens at that point is that they fail and go away. Same for YouTube (effectively, they'll stop hosting all music) and radio, which will just do more classical and talk of various sorts. The people, your direct customers, have decided they're willing to pay about $1 / song when they buy music, and are willing to spend about $10 / month for a streaming source. They also likely only have 'x' to spend each year (totaling something like $15B last I looked) Now, somehow, that $15B need to be equitably divided among the artists. I'd say you start looking at what slice your contributions made to that pie and how much you're getting from it. I'd claim that Spotify and other OSPs are not currently really profiting from your efforts, although the traffic does help them in other ways.
-
Re:My how have the tables turned
He's actually an afterthought in why you're getting screwed.
Respectfully, you don't know the particulars of my personal situation. The record label has been quite ethical. There are other entities in the money collection chain that make it difficult for them to get pair properly.
The labels are the primary, and until artists realize it nothing will change. However, they hold such a monopoly on things these days that even an established artist with a large fan base cannot really go it alone.
This has pretty much always been the case and a source of lamentation for artists since the concept of a record label was created. I think it is a fundamental aspect of capitalism that the people with the power and the money keep both the power and the money. The only thing that can tip that balance is either some kind of revolution or collective bargaining (which I could totally get behind) OR legislation. At the moment, the safe harbor provision prevents anyone (artists, record labels, etc.) from suing an OSP (online service provider) for any customer/member hosting one's music without permission. Think for a moment about who the OSPs are and you might realize that they are not your favorite companies either.

Re:Trumped up..
Smells like more of what I am starting to refer to as 'Trumped up news'.
Not that I support the man (or in fact could really care less directly about US politics), however it seems very important to quite a group of people to
make it look like the sky is falling right now. It is quite sad to see the side that believes they stand for fairness, doing the right thing, caring of others, etc
having to throw so much dirt so bitterly. Its like watching monkeys at the zoo fighting over scraps. No it's not. It raising the alarm over alarming actions. It's the same thing thing that happened to some other guy. It's the same thing that yet some other guy did many many times.
when you think the press is critical of you, and not the other guy, you're just biased. when you complain and criticize almost non-stop, then call it unfair when other people criticize and complain about you, you're just a fucking cry-baby.

Re:All those movies suck.
Close. The actual plan is this:
Step 1: Target Asia by dumbing down complex dialog, plots, (hard to follow with a language barrier) and reducing the number of black people in your movies.
Step 2: Release
Step 3: Profit.
Bill Maher: "Part of it is--and this is the dirty little secret--is that most movies are made with an eye to the foreign market, and Asians [in Asian countries] really are racist. [...] They don't want to see black people generally in their movies."
Of course, I can't wait for plenty of people to refute this without any sources by just going "Nu-uh."

Re:I Would Rather Go To Theatres
Really?
Revenue at the 2015 global box office crossed $38 billion for the first time in history, surpassing last year's record $36.7 billion.
That includes an unprecedented $11 billion-plus in North America, up 6.3 percent from last year's dismal $10.35 billion
By the end of 2017, China is expected to surpass North America and become the largest movie market in the world. http://www.hollywoodreporter.c...
So no the movie industry has not been destroyed by the internet. No even close. Time to take you head out of your ass. -
Trump is Only a Millionaire
> I rather suspect he won't release his tax records because he's the pot calling the kettle black.
He wont' release them because they would reveal that he's not a billionaire.
He wasted over a million dollars to lose a libel suit against a reporter who did a lot of research and came up with a number of about $200M. That guy, by the way, has seen his tax returns, but he's under court order not to talk about the specifics. He deserves a crowd-funding campaign to encourage him to violate that court order.
Trump certainly has assets that could be liberally valued at over a billion dollars. But he also has debt, upwards of half a billion in debt and he's added at least $50M just to finance his campaign.

Hmmm... society by design?
This happened with Independence Day 2 as well.
"We have a gay couple in the film. We don't make a big deal out of it. You start small and then you get bigger and bigger and bigger, and one day you have a gay character as the lead and nobody will wonder at it no more."
-- Roland Emmerich, speaking of Independence Day 2.So we have the director gently ushering society 'towards the light' -- some ideal that he has in mind. Great!
ID4 (the first film) had 2 writers: Dean Devlin, and Roland Emmerich (in that order). The second film has 4-5 writers, with Roland Emmerich credited as lead.
Roland, stick to your day job.

Re:More to the point, why is this a publicity circ
So, apparently there are a solid number of people who are well aware of things this guy has been doing that are supposedly solidly covered by normal criminal law, and they have known for some time, and yet no charges have been pressed, no police have been involved, and no one has had a day in court? Instead, we have people who can 'verify Anonymous victims' (no, really) and that makes a public and well organised smeer campaign the correct path forward?
Read what the prosecutor said about the case against Woody Allen on behalf of Dylan Farrow. Read the letter from Brock Turner's victim and learn about what she went through just to get the guy a six months' sentence. Read about Bill Cosby's victims. Find out why criminal complaints are not the path forward.
however vigilante justice is now the socially accepted way of dealing with what should be reasonably simple criminal complaints
This is not vigilante justice. It's just telling the truth publicly, and it encourages other victims to report these crimes sooner and more regularly.
he also has the right to face his accusers (in a court of law), have a legal defense, all those trappings of a just society that we all would demand, dont we?
No, that's only if they charge him in a court of law. This is just telling the truth. Nothing wrong with that. Everybody should know the good news.
-
Re:I'm sure this will be just great.
In the wake of what happened to an actual convicted rapist Brock Turner, it's no wonder that victims are afraid to step forward. Depending on the color and social level of the perpetrator, there's almost no chance of justice and a very large chance that the victim's life will be further destroyed.
Ronin Farrow wrote a superb piece recently based on his sister's own experience of a molestation suit that gives a lot of explanation as to why victims don't always want to come forward or continue to pursue the matter.

Exactly. Those long URLs know to be relatively secure even by Bruce Schneier are being converted to short ones, and accessible to the public. There is or was a lawsuit related to that
