"Shipbreakers" the documentary
neither did I, until I saw a decent documentary on it, that focuses on shipbreaking in the Gujurat region of India. Unfortunately I can't find any pieces of the documentary online, but there is a CBS 60 minutes segment on shipbreaking on http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-62023081

So... anyone have an english translation of that polish movie Sara? http://imdb.com/title/tt0120066/

Re:The "U.S".?
Your use of the word "current" in this context is interesting.
It's all one giant blob of government, with a wee ice-berg tip coming up for public review at election time.
For an amusing take on a government across the pond that reveals why hope for change is rather optimistic, see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0080306/ and the sequel, Yes Prime Minister.
While you'll readily show that your point #2 is indeed true (economies of scale being a no-brainer), think about the tight coupling with your government, and both the explicit and implicit loss of personal sovereignty involved.
Hence the stiff resistance to the idea, especially at the federal level, where too much power is concentrated in the hands of the few, which point I think you were making in #1. -
Re:Something to put my mind off Spiderman
Well, according to his bio on IMDb:
He is a very close friend of writer/director George Lucas from whom he often seeks advice.

Re:Sorry...
My mom rented that movie for me when I was 12, sick with the flu, knowing that I loved sci-fi. But all it did was give me really fucked up fever-induced dreams. She followed that up with Zardoz. More crazy-ass dreams. I have to give her credit-- at least she tried. But man... I've seen way more Sean Connery than I ever wanted to.

Damn bbcode habits. -
Re:Robot speech?
They are going to speak. They hired Peter Cullen, the original voice of Optimus Prime, to perform his voice in the film, and for a while also had Frank Welker, the actor who voiced Megatron, to reprise his role (which he is still doing in the video game; you can hear it in some clips on the site). You can hear some voicework on the official movie site. Cullen sounds a bit older, but still very much like Prime. On the video game site, you can hear that Welker's voice has changed a bit, which may be the reason why he was dropped for Hugo Weaving, which means Agent Smith is going to voice Megatron (see the IMDb entry).
There's a clear strategy behind the trailers so far: they reveal more and more to keep old fans aching for more information, and this new information comes out bit by bit. And I guess they want to leave some things obscured so people actually go and see the movie...
-
Sorry...Give me Robot Jox any day.
- No sound in space.
- Correct orbital mechanics (eg, thrust behind made the robot go up instead of ahead)
- When the "good guys" says, "Wait! We don't need to fight! We can both walk away from this fight before we kill each other!" the "bad guy" thinks about it for a minute and then agrees. They walk away from it. The end.

Re:You are the conspiracy!
JFK IS NOT DEAD. The CIA cloned him and that was what was really shot. He faked his death so that he could live with Marylon Monroe,
Actually he's living with Elvis (who had switched identities with an Elvis impersonator (who is the person who really died) but unfortunately fell and broke his hip) in an old folks home in East Texas somewhere (the wound in his head was filled with saw dust to keep him alive). -

Ya see after the game, a lot of guys like to ice up their arm. Still other fellas think that heat is the way to go. But I have discovered the secret - hot ice! That's right, hot ice! I heat up the ice cubes! It's the best of both worlds!

The Real Rambo IV
Here's to Rambo IV, where he goes back and kicks the ass of the Tabliban guys he freed in III.
You do know that the reason Sly was in Australia in the first place was probably because he was on his way to Thailand to film Rambo IV -- right? (Actual new title: "John Rambo.") The topic under discussion this time is Burma, not Afghanistan. Just FYI.

Re:Life in prison?
Ha! Black!
Actually, I've been messing with you. My first post was in agreement with you. But the whole I-hope-you-enjoy-dieing spiel was too silly to let pass. My point was that some other people (i.e. not you) believe that we should imprison people for minor crimes and that by ruining their lives we can thus improve them. It's very much like a scene out of Harrison Bergeron where a concerned group of citizens is campaigning for capital punishment for parking violations because "it's the only way they'll learn". -
A Great Documentary
A quick note for anyone interested in this sort of thing who hsn't already run across it: there is a great documentary on the Kasparov/Deep Blue contest called Game Over: Kasparov and the Machine. Well worth checking out.

Re:Assumptions
A little background reading is not asking all that much, IMHO.
Well, I hope you take that advice before you post next time, since it's obvious you're the only not following it.
I suppose if an article regarding Care Bears was to be posted, you would tell people to go the the Official Site before asking yourself how The Care Bears Battle the Freeze Machine relates to News for Nerds if for no greater reason than you submitted BakaHoushi's Care Bear Video to Youtube.
A little background reading is not asking all that much, IMHO. -
Re:+1 My Cousin Vinnie
For those not in in the know, the parent is referring to Fred Gwynne, who played Judge Chamberlain Haller in My Cousin Vinny. Fred Gwynne, btw, is also well-known for playing Herman Munster.

Re:ill-gotten gains???
Just to play devil's advocate -- What if its a really crappy movie? One that you, say, value at $5, not the $29.99 the MPAA wants for a new release?
You mean like Paranoia 1.0 a.k.a. One Point O , listing at $24.98 and selling for $21.99 at, but listing at only $9.99 and selling for $5.99 at ? (I shop around.)
OK, so maybe I don't think it's crappy. I liked it, so much that it still sits marked Keep Until I Delete on my TiVo while I wait for the DVD to arrive sometime this week. (The TiVo recorded it as one of its Suggestions, possibly because I told it I liked Primer , also one of its Suggestions.)
Is it wrong to mark as KUID content from a premium movie channel? I'm sure the entertainment cartels would believe it to be so, even though this movie is an independent film. The RIAA claims it owns all music distribution rights, even for unsigned music; I'd expect the MPAA to parrot that. -

Re:Oh, cut the bleeding heart crap, will ya?
Looks like nobody caught the reference, even though I would've posted if it wasn't already there - it was the first thing that came to mind when reading this. Anyway, it's a quote from Airplane II, uttered by, yes, William Shatner. Kind of gives away your age...

Yeah, my sons love The Three Caballeros. I have seen it so many times that I have the Portuguese lyrics memorized.

Robin Williams already did it..
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0364343/
Actually a fairly enjoyable little movie. I really don't think anyone wants this kind of "google search for life" stuff if this is where it would (and it would..) go. While it would be useful DURING your life (albeit with the conscious knowledge that everything you do is recorded), what do you think people would do with it after your death? -
The Movie you're looking for is called
The Final Cut, staring Robin Williams. Sort of unexpectedly badass.

Re:I'm disgusted
"They shouldn't spend *any* money on education until all poverty is solved"
Not so fast, let's see how this works out first, OK?
Education is the greatest basis for fighting poverty in a 3rd world country. Think better educated people -> more efficient entrepreneurs / companies -> more money in the local economy -> more taxes -> better healthcare and services etc. Uruguay could possibly have just made the first step to become the next India (IT-wise)!
BUT the greatest thing is that with more literate & educated people, the less likely they will endure another dictator. And that should happen *everywhere* else, not just in Uruguay! Without education, you could wait forever for all poverty to be solved.
Isn't the idea that instead of constantly giving them fish, we *teach* them to fish? -
here is one of the top of my head'm unaware of another show with even a remotely similar take on the space western theme Cowboy Bebop - in fact for first few episodes of Firefly I could not get the feeling that it is a cheap live action Bebop ripoff. But then again, the first few episodes were the worst. If you have never seen Cowboy Bebop - I highly recommend it, any fan of Firefly is sure to love it.
That being said, I don't understand why there is always a "simpsons already did it"-type chorus following any new show as if just because the concept has been done before, it cannot be done again and be good. I mean "Heroes" is just an X-Man rip-off, and not even the only one, but it is still good (anyone remember that other X-Man ripoff show a few years back? Can't remember the name of it now). Sure there are plenty of really BAD remakes and clones , but there are also plenty of really horrible original concepts too (anyone seen Monk lately? Brilliant concept, run so far into the ground is will soon pop out in China). Generally a
The premise is usually one of the least significant signs of a a good show. The most significant parts are not premises or even plot lines, it is the quality of writing. This is what makes shows like Firefly good. Who cares if they are "space cowboy" themed or not - they could be riding in a Winnebago around 1960's USA for all I care, it would still be a good show if you have good writing.

"The Hunt" Documentary
There was a documentary made of the U of C scavenger hunt a few years ago. You can buy it here. Or request that Netflix or your local library get a copy, so you can check it out.

I actually remember seeing a comic when I was little, of an airplane bent into a pretzel knot in midair. I don't remember the caption exactly but it involved a stewardess(back then), or maybe the pilot, somehow upsetting Uri Geller.
That sounds a bit like the poster for the movie Airplane! -
