I'm not surprised to hear this and used to agree, but there was an apparently-obscure movie a few years ago that I had to have called to my attention, and now I'll pass that favor onto you: watch Edge of Tomorrow. THAT. THat, thAT. THAT's the problem. Who decides who's right? The SJW / PITA / whatever people have already decided they're right and everyone else is wrong and in some cases must be immediately stopped. Discussion? Convincing other people? Who has time for that?

Let's say we all agree that pollution is bad and needs to be reduced. THEY want to remove all coal plants, I want to remove half, YOU want to remove the single absolute worst offender (by whatever standards.) Who's right? We ALL are. Who's wrong? We ALL are.

Who's in control? Well that's an interesting question. In the US it's supposed to be a democracy, with people arguing for both sides and somehow coming to an agreement. Except people have lost faith in (some/all of) their elected officials, and Climate Change! Save the Baby Whales! Save the Amazon! seem to have reached a fever pitch. But I'm sure we can still go higher -- after all, fatigue sets in so you have to be louder and louder to attract and keep attention. Luckily we have "filter bubbles" and "safe spaces" and Facebook communities to keep us from the horrible din of conflicting ideas.

What do you mean 'here we come?' These kinds of systems have been in use for a few years already in use in parts of the West, inclunding the UK, parts of Germany and Chicago. There's an alright documentary about ongoing developments and these systems with the name Pre-crime from last year by German directors Matthias Heeder & Monika Hielscher. I can recommend it.

Essentially these systems are divided into 2 categories: ones using open and public data (essentially public crime statistics) that tell the police where crime is conncentrated to help them plan patrol-routes and know where the hotspots are, and the truer pre-crime breed that combines this with personal data by scouring Facebook, twitter, facial recognition, financial and criminal history information, known friends, etc to form a 'threat assessment scoreä via an unknown closed-source algorithm. This is combined with aerial and CCTV footage often to be able to locate/track individuals and cars rapidly. It's essentially exactly what China is doing, except China is slightly ahead because they've got masssive resources put into it and they never claimed to care about individual rights.

The system is Chicago is the latter breed and has a 'heat-list' of around 400 individuals (at the time of the film, probably more now) that regularly pulled aside on the street and interviewed by the cops. Not because they've done anything wrrong, but because the almighty algorithm tells the police officers they might. There's no way for anyone to see what information of theirs is in the system, what their 'threat score is', or what it's based on. There are several commercial operators in this space. My guess is in 10 to 15 years we'll start seeing Chinese 'private' (state-owned western subsidiaries) entering the market in the West. Gotta catch all the terrorists and gang members before anything bad happens, it's for Your Protection(tm), citizen! The gang excuse is the one Chicago seems to be using.

Now is the time to fight the legality of these systems in courts throughout the West as unconstitutional breaches of basic rights. The police will counter with: 'but we're only using it to track Bad People(tm)' which must be countered with 'that's the excuse of all massive surveillance states, stop reading 1984 as a manual you god damn imbeciles." Unless this is done now, unless strong legal precedent against such systems is established in the coming few years they will spread fast, and after that there is no returning, because at that point opposing the systems will be faced with: 'why are you defending criminals?" and the game will be lost. People: do not make this a partisan issue. Regardless of your country and your political leanings everyone knows that China is fucked up. It doesn't matter one bit whether you're a , a libertarian or a neo-Marxist; both sides of the political spectrum can and have in the past become authoritarian. This is not about left vs. right, this is about authoritarian vs. liberal. Unite against this BS now, or stand divided over partisan bullshit and watch these systems take over everywhere.

I'm not a communist by any stretch (I own a third of a corporation), but I am very strongly and openly a leftist individual being from Finland where the political spectrum in general (as in the whole of rest of the West in fact) is more to the left from the US, but I will happily join hands with my libertarian counterparts on the right over this. We can disagree about health care and social security spending all we want when that's the topic, but we're both in agreement that this bullshit must stop.

If you just read the above statement and your first thought is to write some variation of: 'But this is what the left wants! It's your fault!1!11!" then we've already lost the game. That's what they want us to do, so I plead you all not to fall into this bickering, these issues are too important for that..

The Great White Males in this country, who are all aging and long since having become calcified in their ways and attitudes, have been subjected to womens' rights, LGBTQ rights, gay marriage being legalized, women in positions of power, LGBTQ in positions of power, transgender people living out in the open and using bathrooms not corresponding to what their birth certificates say, and, finally, an African American POTUS for 8 years. What they want is to turn the clock back to the mid 1940's, when things were 'sane' (so far as they're concerned), because all the above is so far outside their comfort zone now, that they're practically peeing their pants every single day from the anxiety of being subjected to these things (and more) that they just can't wrap their heads around and accept. Some people don't want progress, some people just want things to stay precisely the way they've always been and never change, regardless of whether that's actually good or not. Ironically, there are quite a few women of the same vintage as these Great White Males who feel exactly the same as they do -- because they are of a generation that was indoctrinated from birth to believe that what the men-folk want is what they're supposed to want, too, and that 'thinking for themselves' will just get them in trouble -- so they just tow the line.

So that's what brings us to where we have today: half the country votes for a loud-mouthed, ill-behaved, Great White Male for POTUS, because he represents past times when Everything Was Still Okay (or so they think; things actually kinda sucked in significant ways. You can't go back!). They stay safely in denial about all the nasty shit he's doing, because the alternative, so far as they're concerned, was so much worse -- and Trump is 'sticking it to the liberals' that they hate so much, so almost anything he does is okay by them, so long as they get their 'revenge' on the 'libtards' that have brought them so much angst and ruined their black-and-white little Pleasantville world.

I will give you this one bit of hope to hang on to though: The DNC now has control of the House of Representatives again; this is the beginning of the course correction that was inevitable. The needle is now starting to swing back left towards the middle. This will continue over the next 2 years, as Trump continues to show his ass to the country and the world, and all but his staunchest, most deep-in-denial voter base will abandon ship, not being able to hold their noses against the stink he's creating. So hang on for a while longer and keep voting Democrat -- or if you're not Democrat, at least vote for moderate Republicans, who have a brain, which is the back-door way to help the Course Correction happen.

That's rather short sighted of you. If I invest in a rather expensive piece of technology that has the capability to be self-aware, I'd like to be able to have a conversation with "it" regarding it's health, maintenance, and mission priorities.

It wonâ(TM)t be in my lifetime, but I hope that - some day - we really do have an honest-to-goodness deep space network.

Maybe I'm just a depressing old fogie. With that intro, nope. It's just too hard to get out of the gravity well.

Oh, we can DO it, but just barely. We've had the combustion engine moving things around horizontally for a century. We've had air-flight for "nearly" as long, and "Space Flight" (well, there ain't no air, so it's space!) for half that. We've visited the moon in person, and other planets by proxy. We've even sent two crafts into interplanetary space, outside Sol's gravity well. WHEEE!

Going vertically is just much harder than horizontally, both equipment-wise, energy-wise, and intelligence-wise. (Any idiot can drive a car now-a-days, but back at the beginning, you had to know how to start it and crank it by hand, how to light the lights (candles!), and the correct fuel to add.) I'd be curious to see how many square feet -- meters, if you're drinking tea -- in livable space we've sent to the moon, and then just around Earth orbit. The moon/Mars isn't going to be a tourist destination anytime in the next 200 years without an energy breakthrough. Yeah, we can ship a few people someplace far away AKA Captain Cook (or was that Captain Bligh?) but for having people living in Tombstone, Arizona, Mars is unbelievable, never mind having a McD, WalM, or Micky there to visit when you're bored.

We can maybe go get Asteroids (I loved that game when it first came out) for minerals and metal, but we're still trading energy for it. Until we can solve the energy problem (remember in the '50s when All Electric Medallion Homes were the rage? Power was going to be "Too cheap to meter" -- a prediction for a fission utopia. It'll be here Any Day Now.)

Back in the 70s I was ready to go, excited about the moon landings and wanted us to go further. But further is a LOOONG way away, and that's just the nearest planets. We're better off Mars-forming our children's bodies instead of trying to Terraform Mars.

Don't get me wrong -- I'd love to see us try. I'd love all of the accidental scientific and technology fallouts that occur while producing all of that. I'd like my tax money to go TOWARDS that. But unless you're a large handful of specialists, you're not going to make it out of the atmosphere, never mind our local well. Who knows, though, maybe Andy Griffith can save us.

Oh, I'm sure we'll eventually have "an honest-to-goodness deep space network" but it'll always be machines on the far end.
