Re:Fourth Question
>> Fall down a flight of stairs?
> I seem to remember a game like this on the PC. Really fun.
I think you are thinking of Porrasturvat, a.k.a. Stair Dismount, a classic "ragdoll physics" simulation game where you push someone down a flight of stairs. Now available for Mac and Linux. There's also an even more painful-looking truck-themed sequel. -
Re:who cares...
My point is simply that graphics don't make the games, gameplay does. I listed those games because i liked the gameplay, and the quality of the graphics does not impact how i feel about the game. This is in contrast to the myriad of players who see the latest and greatest Battlefield game and go "OOO! Shiny" and rave on about how awesome it is, although the gameplay is crap ( this is my biased opinion though ).
So you want some more recent games that have awesome gameplay that don't need the latest and greatest computer and graphics card?, Ok...

Re:Some other ideas for video games
Stair dismount is the one i recall.
They also had a truck dismount one where a truck was smashing into a wall.
Both can be found here:

The stair and truck dismount have been a long time favorite with me. I have spent hours hitting that poor lifeless figure with a truck. It is disturbing just how much fun it is.

Stair and Truck Dismount
I haven't looked at this "game" in a hot minute, but I definitely remember being amused greatly by the ability to just throw a doll down some stairs or on a truck. Its great to see that they link to mods now too! Like "Spiral Staircase Dismount" ! Man, the possibilities. -
Porrasturvat
From TFA:Yes. I remember playing a demo where you could push crash dummies down some stairs, I forget what it was called, maybe it was 'Stair Dismount' or something like that.
Mark is of course referring to the venerable Porrasturvat (Stair Dismount), which can be found here, along with Rekkaturvat (Truck Dismount) and many, many Porrasturvat mods. -
Re:Thank god someone is doing something...
Just download Truck Dismount (or Stair Dismount, for that matter) and pretend it's him. OMG murder simulation!

missed the link

SlashvertisementNote that most of the links are referrals, so the site is getting paid for people clicking on them.
Anyone care to link to some quality free games? My current favorites:

Truck Dismount...
I believe that I have seen this before, in both the "Truck Dismount" (Rekkaturvat) and "Stair Dismount" (Porrasturvat) versions. They are available for download.
My favorite was trying to get the truck to throw the guy *completely* over the wall, or go for bonus points getting the guy's head to rattle back and forth between the wall and the truck grill.
Great for getting stress out on a boss (at the time) whom we imagined we were putting on the truck, etc.

Stair Dismount!
The article may be old news, but fully reactive software stunt men have been around since 2002. I did hours of "research" on this topic with some really good software.

Re:why not an opensource game like that?
I know I would love to put together something like GTA:VC or MTA. I'm sure many others have as well. My problem is that I'm perhaps not as good a coder as I'd like to think, and I've never explored game programming before. But I have put a lot of thought into it the last year or two, and have come up with these resources:
- OGRE - an object-orientated graphics engine.
- Open Dynamics Engine - as used by the well-known stair and truck dismount games.
- DIE - a car game in the early stages of development. It uses the two previous libraries.
- Boost - C++ libraries. In particular, there is Boost.Python which allows good cooperation between C++ and Python. That could be useful for scripting the interactive behaviour of the various people, vehicles, weapons, and other devices.
As you say, the key would be in creating a flexible engine at the core. I imagine people adding new vehicles, tools, missions, and venues. I'm not sure what the "aim" of the game would be, but I'm sure people would create things to do. Here's my wishlist of improvements and other ideas:
- Climbing ability. I see lots of ladders around GTA:VC, but can't climb them. The ability to hang onto ledges like Tomb Raider would be useful as well.
- More detailed buildings. Most of the buildings in GTA:VC are just boxes. I'd like the ability to walk inside, use the stairs or elevators, find a sniping position on the balcony or window, etc.
- Focus less on violence. GTA:VC has been heavily criticised for its violence and sometimes even I find it a little too much. I'd like to see more focus on stunts and tricks, mischief, puzzle solving and just simple exploration. Perhaps make the police more likely to catch you when you do something "wrong".
- Different character classes. Perhaps not as detailed as a full-on role-playing game, but do have different types of characters with slightly different abilities. You need variety when multiple people are playing online.
- More interactive elements like light switches, garage doors, elevators, etc. Perhaps the player could obtain a garage door remote control and go around opening peoples garages.
- For the ultimate geek thrill, simulate several thousand artificial people! Get rid of the annoying "background" element of the cars and pedestrians in GTA:VC. Everyone has a house, they travel to work every morning and travel home every evening. Police and police cars actually patrol and have to travel to you instead of just appearing. Likewise with the heavier SWAT vans, police helicopter, and army trucks and tanks. Tourists travel in on planes to the airport, stay at hotels, travel around by day seeing the sights, and leave again by plane. Oh boy, lots of computation and memory and bandwidth! Perhaps a little too far-fetched for now.

If you liked the ODE demo, you'll go postal over these. -
Bah, all cheap imitations
Now here's a real real-physics game.

Not retro, but fun
I came across a fantastic game the other day "Stair Dismount". You have to push a guy down some stairs to see how much damage you can inflict upon him.
It looks like a rag doll physics test bed that the author decided would make a great game. It uses the Open Dynamics Engine.
The plot:
The legendary superhero Spector has found, to his shock, that he cannot write off all the damage he has caused to the city out of his taxes unless he proves that he has sustained significant damage in the process himself! Now it's up to you to 'help' him with this little detail..Download at http://jet.ro/dismount/ (Windows only, although it does mention that some people have had luck running it under Wine).
Ace fun.

Truck dismount
The guy who wrote Porrasturvat ("Stair Dismount") now has a version with trucks. It will definitely keep their attention for a day or so, and it uses a very realistic physics model.
-
Re: Stairs?
I think he means this. Called "Stair Dismount". Has a followup game called "Truck Dismount".
-
It's multiplayer but...
Definitly this game rulez: Soldat
It's a 2d platform alike multiplayer game that clearly had some inspiration from worms - but is is oh so cool and fun to play in lan with 4 persons, the gameplay is just fantastic :)
Truck dismount already had a prequal otherwise it would be my choice :)
The other games I saw really were sequals or non-original things, so I guess there won't be any other... -
Re:"using" this sim
Actually I believe it really simulates actual star system formation (44 different simulations, according to the article). It should be relatively easy to create snappy 3D animations of each of those 44 simulations you could zoom around to your heart's content.
Of course that still doesn't make a sim-style game since after initial parameters are set there's nothing to *do*, just let the simulation run and see how the system develops.
Hmm, sounds a lot like Stair and Truck Dismount games, so perhaps it'd still make a fun game after all ;) -
Re:This is a problem
"I'll make a program where every time you click a huge pool of blood explodes and spills everywhere. Is it a fun game? no."
I'd play it. I mean, I wouldn't pay for it, but I'd play it. Shoving a guy down the stairs or running a guy into a wall with a truck is fun, so why wouldn't exploding blood pools be fun?

I was just playing two very intense violent games earlier today, check them out. You won't be disappointed. http://jet.ro/dismount/

Re:So what are you saying?
We need to make a game where people jump off a cliff and kill them selves to finally clean out the shallow end of the gene pool? Sheesh. People will say anything these days to shift blame from themselves.
Well, the story line isn't perfect.. But I think it's close enough... Try using Stair Dismount it should fit the bill well enough... -

Re:31103Nope, I downloaded your scores.dat and wasn't able to view them (clicking on "Scores" gave me a blank list). Replacing it with my saved scores.dat brought my scores back. (Can you try installing on another machine and see if your scores.dat works? Perhaps I had an error in the download...)
What impresses me is that someone has managed to get over 203k! See the high score list.
I managed to get the truck to roll over. Didn't crush the guy tho; still working on that.
