Re:What can I sayMaybe this? It's part of www.mp5networks.com, which appears to have you download some P2P software (maybe Kazaa lite) and then charges you for tech support.
Actually sounds like a good idea to me, charging a monthly service for technical support on something free/illegal...not too different from charging lessons on how to swim, only without the threat of actually having to do any work.

Kazaa Lite - Tastes Great::Less Filling

Re:Value-addedHere's your value added Kazaa right here.
Kinda works under wine too -
New Music Tuesday
the idea behind bringing music out on Tuesday comes from the charts. when Billboard mag comes out on saturday, they set the type for the charts on tuesday morning. this means that what gets "charted" is only what is at the top on Monday.. so new music is (usually) released on tuesday, so they have the maximum amount of time to crawl up the charts until next monday..
in a (slightly) related note.. all those chart shows that you hear on radio (Rick Dees' Weekly Top 40, and Casey Kasem) are usually in the radio stations by thursday in CD format.. even if they seem to have call-ins and stuff.. its ALL done on CD.. i used to work for a radio station in sri lanka and some of my most boring memories are of babysitting a CD player on saturday morning as it played the Rick Dees Weekly Top 40
in fact thanks to time zones etc, sri lankans heard the top 40 WELL before the rest of the world.. (until those damned aussies started playing RDWT40).. 8-)
Suchetha
on the other more on-topic side, kudos to steve jobs for actually coming up with a realistic model for selling music online, this is probably not the end of the RIAA, it may be a dying dinosaur, but do you REALLY want to be under a dying dinosaur?... at worst youa re going to get ground into the topsoil during its death throes, at best you are going to get buried under a couple hudred tons of rotting dinosaur.. but lets face it.. this system is a realistic hope for the Industry to bow out gracefully.. whether they take it, or continue to fight a losing battle is entirely up to them..
OTOH i intend to keep downloading music off Kazaa Lite simply because i live in a country where almost the only way to get software/music is via bootleg CD's (you can get official game Cd's for some games but everything else is bootleg.. usually available within 1 week of release at about $0.75 per CD).. so no matter what my money goes to pirates -
Re:it's not very hard
Well, how is Joe User going to install, let alone build, a regexp-based filter on his version of MSIE?
I can see text-ads sticking around simply because you can't *easily* filter them by installing one of several apps that changes your hosts file, or by installing a custom stylesheet. -
Re:Kenny G ...
Say, linkin park (I'm making an extrapolation. If you hate it, sorry.)
Apology accepted.
Just out of curiosity, what data are you extrapolating a "geek" like of Linkin' Park from?
Either way, I don't find it particularly dangerous for record labels to attempt to be compensated for their products. I think it's fairly natural for them to use increasingly more extreme measures of reducing the brazenly open distribution of their content.
I mean really did you expect them to just bend over and take it?
The more people steal their products, the more they're going to do everything within their power to reduce the effectiveness for the average person to do so. Dangerous? Not particularly. The people that whittle away your fair use rights are the people that think they're the ones with the power, take whatever they want, and fail to understand that the music industry isn't just going to sit there and let them pick its bones.
If you want to find someone to be angry with download this program, do a search for some of Arista's artists, and then message all of the people distributing their work. Something like, "Hey Fuckhead, you're evaporating my fair use rights of copyrighted materials." -
Re:Already done...?
Kazaa really f'd its users over with its adware, and that other thing as was mentioned in that slashdot article.
this is the exact reason that i use kazaa lite (caution, popups) -
Re:I thought everyone used Kazaa
Dont use Kazza use Kazaa Lite, Kazaa sans-spyware.
-
Re:Go further!
Yeah, Kazaalite comes with a few utilities that do this. http://www.kazaalite.com
-
Finally a legitimate use for Kazaa!
Go to http://www.kazaalite.com if you haven't already. Download & install it. Then offer the files on Kazaa.
-
Now if only slashdot would follow their lead
-
Not if WE can help it!but don't hold your copy of Steamboat Willy at the duplicator anytime soon.
The solution is simple. Download "Steamboat Willie" (note the spelling) from p2p right now. It's there as an mpeg, file size 76,501,432. Share it. Install p2p on hosts purely to share this one file.
Public dissent is essential in overthrowing bad laws.
Some URLs:
WinMX
Note; none of these applications contain spyware. Get sharing people!

Re:Why Kazaa?
Maybe they *really* meant to say Kazaa Lite?
:) -
The biggest losers of all...
The honest internet-using public, when Audiogalaxy went down. It's been a while, now, since the RIAA sued AudioGalaxy and shut down their service.
It's not like they were the only ones to go last year. The reason it pissed off a lot of people was that it it was the best popular audio sharing client to date, and everyone loved it. It was so easy to use and it was absolutely brilliant at finding anything, even really obscure stuff.
Best of all, it did an excellent job of blocking pirate downloads. You tried looking for a single by any popular artist in the past fifty years, odds were you couldn't find it. Probably seemes like an unwanted daft feature of file sharing client, but it made the system that much less illegal. That's why it was such a shame to see it go - the RIAA charged our beloved AudioGalaxy with piracy and gave it the death sentence, all the while letting Kazaa, WinMX and the other 'real criminals' roam free.
To this date, there are kids on the Kazaa and WinMX still actually costing the recording industry money in CDs some of them actually would be buying originally, and pedophiles sharing entire collections of unsavoury child porn. Yet looking for harmless TV themes today on the service that never hurt anybody, I can't find shit. -
Re:uh
Also kazaalite.com. Those 3d packages don't come cheap
;-). -
Re:I still haven't filled my 60GB HDD...mirc
kernel.org
kazaa lite

oh, and you'll probably need on of these soon

Re:Wow, I'm actually one of the first 20 posters..
Yes, it still has spyware, but Kazaa lite is kazaa without spyware. You can get it at Kazaalite.com.
-
Re:Wow, I'm actually one of the first 20 posters..
Yes, regular kazaa has spyware in it. But you can download a spyware-free hack of kazaa here. Most people in-the-know use this. It also removes the popup ads, etc.
-
Re:Wow, I'm actually one of the first 20 posters..Yes, Kazaa still has spyware.
Fortunately there is a project that makes a version of Kazaa with the spyware stripped out. You can get it here: Kazaa Lite. It seems to work just fine.
I'm actually pretty impressed with Kazaa. The only real problem sometime is finding files that are mislabeled (i.e. in Kazaa they are listed as being by one artist but then when you get the actual file it turns out to be someone else).

Re:edit your hosts....my hosts file is already several KB long
Mine is currently closer to 30k, but about 20k of that comes from those rather excellent people that produce the KaZaA Lite P2P software. Skimming through the domain names in that, it's fairly obvious that most of them deserve to be sent to 127.0.0.1 and it's a good starting point if you are considering going down this route. Add in an ad-blocker, disable JavaScript and ActiveX (if applicable) except for trusted sites that need it, and surfing the net becomes surprisingly fast and even a pleasant experience again.

Re:Um yeah, there'll be mass-market demand...
you PAY for porn?
jesus, haven't you got kazaa lite?
or usenet? -
Re:good thing
KazaaLite works pretty well... And without quite as much spyware.
-
Looks like I can do that too!finds out about the track and sends you an e-mail to tell you where you can buy it.
it will e-mail you where you can buy that wine, on-line
-
Re:What are you waiting for!?
-
Re:I this really a problem anymore???Don't like spyware?
Just run KaZaA Lite instead! Problem solved
-
If you're having that problem
It's because you don't know enough about using P2P to use it well. Try Kazaa-Lite. Whereas I find getting a decent transfer rate from any FTP site (or getting in at all) can be a monster pain, I get instant results and max out my bandwidth every time using P2P for this.
-
Same situationI attend Clark University, which also limits p2p bandwidth. Although they haven't outright banned P2p applications, I get slower speeds than I did at home using an ISDN line. While I'd like the music advantage of a college connection, it's obvious why the school started filtering.
Most students here leave KaZaA running 24/7. This means that even if they only download, say, 30 megs per day, they're trying to upload hundreds of megs. To make things worse, they don't even use KaZaA Lite - so they get plenty of spyware with their p2p apps. (Yesterday I brought KaZaA Lite with Speedup to a neighboring dorm room. For kicks, on the same CD I tossed Mozilla and Exact Audio Copy. The latter was a pain to set up, as usual, but they loved the combination of new software.) Schools have no choice because most students don't understand the issues ITS faces. I hear plenty of them complaining about how slow the "internet" is, because they use the net almost exclusively for p2p apps. And I've stopped trying to explain the reasons WHY p2p is so slow, because they never want to hear them.
But the connection is plenty fast to download the occsional mp3. It just means that people become extremely happy when I bring Exact Audio Copy over; yesterday I also installed CDex on my computer because EAC has issues on some CD drives. The article a few days ago about a CD with open source Windows software was of great interest to me, since I've already given out half a dozen CDs with various programs.

Re:You can beat them.
...
...
You can try Kazaa Lite [doa2.host.sk], which is Kazaa without the spy/scumware. ... ...
Hmm...
I have been downloading from www.kazaalite.com. It comes on top when searching on google.
Anyone knows if there is a difference?
How can one know if it is official or fake one full of spyware? -
It's a good thing...
...I use Kazaa Lite. =)
-
Re:just great..."i just installed Kazaa yesterday, having ignored p2p programs uptill now.. hopefully someoen will crack this.."
It's already been done.

Re:Gnucleus
I believe you are thinking of Kazaa Lite.
He supposedly strips Kazaa of spyware. Yes, you can't be sure of that.
However, this shouldn't be confused with Gnucleus which is an open source Gnutella client (that Morpheus ripped off awhile ago and ADDED spyware to it). -
Re:Question
Try the Gnutella network. You can find a list of clients at Gnutella News. Also, try KaZaA. Don't use the official client; it has spyware and adware. Use KaZaA Lite instead.
-
Re:Target KazaaTime to get rid of that Spyware infested, Computer-taking-over, garbage.
Dude just uninstall your KaZaA, run Ad-aware, and install KaZaA Lite No more ads or spyware!
-
KaZaa
I hope you're using the spyware-free KaZaa Lite rather than the infested KaZaa.
-
Re:Apparently you're not the only one
If you really want KaZaA, but without the spyware, you should checkout KaZaA lite (kazaalite.com). Be sure not to allow KaZaA to update itself (like now with the 1.7 version), as it will install the Sharman Networks version with said spyware. A nice p2p-program without spyware is WinMX, too bad there are no Linux clients for it. (for their own network, that is.. Opennap clients enough.)
-
Re:A List mirrors
KazaaLite is all you need.
:) -
Spywareless version
-
Does This Change Anything?I'm not entirely sure it does. As of now, AudioGalaxy has some (moderate) copy protection. There are lots of songs that say they're undownloadable right now, but you just have to search for a slightly different title or spell the singer/band incorrectly.
This will probably make searching for music more difficult, but just search in AudioGalaxy a little deeper, or use KaZaA Lite as reported on Slashdot. I use KaZaAlite and, if you alert Ad-Aware to the fake DLL it uses to fool KaZaA, it works wonderfully. (And I still haven't seen KaZaA shut down, in spite of rumors to that effect...)

Re:That's OK
It's not spyware if you get KazaaLite
-
Re:KaZAA: Case for Open Source?Kazaa and the Fasttrack network in general were not designed for the good of the people, or to make information free -- they were designed to make money. And unfortunately, the trend in bringing profitability to freeware applications has been to bundle a few spyware/adware apps along with the more desirable application.
If Kazaa were open source, there would be numerous spyware-free versions of the program (besides the fact that there already is one), and I wouldn't have had to remove that damn Gator program off most of my friend's pcs.
-
Re:soooo....
That's why Kazaa LITE is the bIZZomb - no adware. As for virii, just like anything else, a little common sense will steer you clear of the hazards.

Kazaa Alternatives
The Fasttrack network is P2P, should Kazaa wish to pull their plug, that doens't make it impossible to connect to the Fasttrack network.
Personally I'm glad to see Kazaa go, they were a fucked up corporation who sold out their user base to Brilliant Tech.
The problem is, I _REALLY_ like the Kazaa interface (wish I could ctrl+click to select multiple files in the traffic window)
Solution: www.kazaalite.com
Keep the P2P network up untill the RIAA comes after the private citizens, then we will show them who owns what!

Re:The Most Important Thing...
Try here: KaZaa Lite.
By the way --- isn't FastTrack a centralized system? If they pull the plug from the main office nobody can search. It happened to Morpheus when KaZaa fucked them over a few months ago. -
Should've seen it coming ...
-
Re:BBC -- RIAA responsible
I never used Kazaa... but I (used to) highly recommend KazaaLite. All of the functionality, none of the spyware. Oh well, back to my from-source LimeWire v1.6b.
-
Re:I am stunned
From what I understand, the altnet stuff comes (will come?) piggybacked on the "b3d projector" advert program that the KaZaA installer automatically installs for you (without prompting if this is ok). You can see it briefly at the end of the installer when it pops up its own installation window in the top left of the screen for about half a second.
KaZaA lite doesn't install this (but it'll still be there if you haven't fully purged an old version of KaZaA from your system. Get adaware for that) -
Kazaa lite!
Just get Kazaa Lite and stop worrying about all this.
Where to get Kazaa Lite? Well, on Kazaa, of course.. or you could be a weenie and go to their web page. -
Re:Try Kazaa
Maybe you should be recommending Kazaalite instead. all the filesharing gooey goodness, and none of the bitter spyware aftertaste.
-
Re:Put in on giFT

Ironic...
... that I'm offered a free cellphone and $500 cash in two pop-up windows on loading Kazaalite.com.
