Re:why all the hoopla?By now, there are half a dozen products that stream video from the PC, from the Web, etc. to your TV.
Yep, I've been using a Kiss DP1500for the past year - it's a DVD player that'll stream video or audio from a shared folder over WiFi. It'll also play web radio and most audio/video formats out there.
It cost me A$240.00 about a year ago, and yes, it does run Linux...

Re:What happened to MP3 phones? The same with media PC's. Given the size restrictions, media PC's performance are heavily watered down and harder to interface with (a remote that gives you little control or a mouse on a couch), so when you expect a full on media experience you instead get a mediocre one.
Mostly true. I've built a few media PCs and tried out the different packages available, including Windows Media Center, MythTV and a couple of the apps that came with the DTV cards. They worked, but not the way an appliance works - there'd be delays responding to the remote, some pictures or videos wouldn't play, there were sound or vision glitches when the OS decided it had more important things to do than let me watch my movie, etc etc. Pretty much what we've all grown to expect from the computing industry, but annoying when you want a seamless experience.
I (and the friends I built the boxes for) put up with their foibles because the advantages were enough to make it worthwhile. We're dumping the Media PCs now though, because we can buy things like these networked DVD players that do the job like an appliance http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=dvd2&v=users for less than A$500. The PCs are all being repurposed back into desktop machines, and movies are being stored on the server.

Re:A Few Points
"Cisco - They already purchased Scientific Atlantic"
Cisco also purchased Linksys who purchased Kiss Technology
Kiss is already making stuff very similar to TiVo http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=products
As an Apple share holder I would rather see TiVO and NetFlix bought up by Apple. -
Re:Apple
This is the PVR you are looking for: http://www.kiss-technology.com/
It allows you to access the recorded content via a built in FTP server.
You can also go the other way and view content from your PC on your TV over your IP network -
KISS has this already

Kiss Technology
Kiss Technology make kick-ass DVD/DivX players and PVRs. They also were the first brand to sell a DVD player that could read MP3s.

Re:Stupidest article ever seen
Did you try this one ?
http://www.kiss-technology.com/ Yes it requires ' their own' server software but people have made their own as well.... -
LMHC...
Why not just buy a KISS DP-558 ? Kiss homepage
It is not 100% Open Source but it runs on Linux... it looks just like a large DVD player and the design of the box could be B&O's. -
Re:Cat in furnace.
Me too, I have a Kiss DP1500, which is DVD/MPEG-4/DivX?/XviD/CD/MP3/Ogg Vorbis/CD-RW/DVD+-RW/JPEG/MPG/MPEG compatable. Has built in Ethernet port and PCMCIA slot for a Wi-Fi card and the firmware is upgradeable. The only files it doesn't play (yet?) is Realmedia, Windows Media & videos encoded with AC3 sound. Excellent bit of kit and cheap too...
-
Re:Cat in furnace.
Snowball in hell. Nice....
The Kiss Technologies players are great - I've been using a DP-1500s for the last year, one wired, one wireless, using the KMA server which runs on linux. -
Re:The problem is the penalty
This has happened multiple times, and the infringing company usually ends up posting the source.
The original MPlayer devellopers wanted to dual license MPlayer because they felt exactly the way you do after the MPlayer vs Kiss debacle. When it was discovered that Kiss had stolen GPL'ed code from MPlayer, they first flat out denied it, they even went as far as to imply that MPlayer had somehow stolen code from a KISS DVD-player. But in the end Kiss where forced to comply with the GPL and offer source downloads. -
Re:Why isn't KISS sued?
Well, because they seem to be in compiance with it now.
Look here
Notice the part where they offer the code to the GPL software they use. -
Why isn't KISS sued?
I think we all remember the MPlayer and libmad case, where KISS stole GPL code, and used it in their DVD recoarders and DVD players.
Wouldn't this be a good place to start, as KISS doesn't give a f**k about the GPL? -
Re:My DVD player does this now without a HDD
There are several DVD players with network (fixed or wireless) and with (optional) harddrive that can do this, plus also play Divx and Xvid, for example some of these. The later generations support more and more options, e.g. GMC and qpel.
-
Re:Standalones are cheap
Yeah, but they don't play over the network do they? Some of us at Slashdot are heavily into networking and don't like to shuffle around with plastic disks.
Still, I'd like it to include PVR functionality as well, so this player's not for me either.
I'd be more interested in something like this:
http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=558&v=users
Unfortunately, this is even more expensive... -
Similar devices:
Was just checking these out yesterday:
Go Video
KISS (runs Linux)
Supposedly Gateway has one too, but perhaps they discontinued it. Could only find this Google cache link.
D-Link
And I'm sure I've missed quite a few. All have slightly different configurations; my goal was to find a box that would play media from the network.
Furthermore, I want the device to play DVD images (I rip ISO images using DVDDecrypter so I don't loose all the extra DVD stuff). I am not sure any of them actually support that. I would even be happy with a device that can play the VOBs directly, I can 'mount' the ISO on the server... -
Re:About the OS
Anyone using any of the Kiss Technology DivX/DVD players. These and all other Sigma Designs reference platforms based DVD/DivX players run uCLinux. So there are lots of people watching DVD's at their home who have no idea that their DVD player is running uCLinux. There is nothing "amazing" about uClinux, It's just Linux running on CPU's without MMU.
...And without MMU, any application can crash the system. Therefore you have to write every app as carefully as you would write a kernel module. -
Re:Sold to DVD Makers
A good bet would be Kiss technology DP series, as they are sigma design based systems. Liteon/Rimax/Yamada/Procaster are lesser known manufacturers using the same chips (and embedded Linux!). Basicly any dvd player that says it supports divx is probably sigma design based. I guess some them didn't bother licensing css and sigma forgot to ask..
-
Re:Wish it weren't just the future...You should pay a visit to the Danish company KISS then, or failing that, atleast their webpages.
They have exactly what you're searching. I have a DP-500 myself and have only positive experiences.
-
Not the only choice
There are other choices, the most notable afaik beeing Kiss' line of players with networking and HD.
-
What luck
I was wondering about the exact question today. I was intitially planning on getting something like the squeezebox and a Bravo D2 but there seemed like so much crossover technolgy there someone must make a device that does both. I found the aforementioned go-video model, a gateway, and a couple producs from some danish company
Has anyone found others. With DVD-audio, HD, mac-compatibility? -
I'd prefer a Kiss player
Lovely. Of course, the Kiss DP1508 has everything the Linksys player has and more: for instance, XVid and Ogg Vorbis support.
Seeing as XVid is what 99% of movies are encoded in these days, you've got to hope the Linksys supports it, although I note the website doesn't explicitly confirm this.
The Kiss player also has Internet radio support, 80GB built-in HD for Tivo-style stuff, multi-region DVD support, and a whole bunch of other things I've probably forgotten.
Admittedly you have to plug a wireless Ethernet card in seperately, but at least the option is there. Having a Kiss DP-450 myself, I can say that they are extremely cool pieces of kit. -
Kiss Technology available nowI have a Kiss DP500 which does all this and more (except for built-in wireless) available in the US at $300. The DP500 is available worldwide and is well supported with on-going firmware updates providing new features. It is part of a line of products including some with internal HD.
The DP500 is open source based (uCLinux) and works well with Linux hosts (there are several projects supporting it on SourceForge).
...just a satisfied customer. -

Uhm... Doesn't this mean they're okay?
From their website they have a page (about 3 clicks away from the product link) that seems pretty compliant, the label of the button that brings up that page says GPL on it. It was right under the support pages (from their top menu, second link from the left).
I didn't RTFA though, so maybe there's something wrong/broken with this page? Or maybe MPlayer want's more credit on the packaging? (like a "Powered by MPlayer" sticker?)
Maybe they just put that page up in the last day or two?
Anywho, I'm off to read the actual MPlayer accusation page now... -

Re:Really In Violation ?mPlayer says
This is stealing GPL code into a proprietary product! Kiss Technology failed to answer our inquiry for their source files (which they are obligated to provide), so this news entry is posted.
to which kiss respondsDownload KiSS DVD Player's source code
also note that there are other copyrights/licenses involved from apple, macromedia and probably others that I didn't stumble across while taking a quick scan of there website. Of course I didn't actualy download the source to verify that it was there with the GPL text included, but it does make the mPlare crew sound a bit whiney don't it.
In appliance with the GNU General Public License, users are free to download the base source code of the KiSS DVD Players. This rule guarantee people's freedom to share and change free software. This General Public License applies to most of the Free Software Fundation's software and to any other program whose authors commit to using it. -
download link for kiss source
I don't understand why they say it's a GPL Violation. The source is offered as a download on the kiss website.
http://www.kiss-technology.com/?p=hot_news&v=users -
this page suggests they are compliant
try looking here.

Re:sweet player...
I want to buy this one here (KISS DP-558).
It can record from TV sources. -
source available for download...
well it appears on their website that they offer the source for download here
-
Re:Cool another slashdot purchase......
I'm not sure if slashdot covered this one or not, but I'm sure aching for one.
The Kiss DP500 plays anything you can throw at it via ethernet connection or cd. They have regular firmware upgrades that allow the box to use new codecs. On top of that, how cool would it be to have a server full of high quality DivX (Xvid, MPEG4, etc., etc.) accessible via your TV!
The box in the article doesn't sound like it does all of that right now. Mega props, though for the SDK for "home users." Just look at where the hacker community has taken the Tivo! -
GPL source from Kiss is on there website!
The source for the kiss divx player is on there website Kiss GPL sourcecode always was.
-
At Lest Kiss Technology...
Is in compliance, or at least appear to be.

Re:Simlair products from Kiss Technology
And it should be noted that the KISS DVD player code source is released under the GPL!
These players definitely look like the most interesting at the moment; anyone would like to share their experience with this one? -
Simlair products from Kiss Technology
I have got simlair system made by Danish company Kiss Technlogy few months now. My product is Kiss DVP500 with ethernet adapter. With that I can listen internet radios, play files from my Linux server (officially only Windows server from Kiss) and ofcourse play DVD discs, CD's with audio/mp3/avi/jpg/real/... content.
It's excellent box but only with bad user interface design. But you can upgrade it when ever Kiss publishes new software versions. -

- iRiver iHP-120, iHP-100, iGP-100, possibly others
- Umax/Yamada have a few standalone DVD players that support Vorbis.
- Neuston provides a standalone DVD player (model DVX-1201) that supports Vorbis.
- Samsung The MCD-CM600 is now available in Korea. It is a CD portable that can play Vorbis, MP3, and WMA. Page with photo of MCD-CM600. Closeup of MCD-CM600.

Re:Me personally?Playback of DivX files to TV is *almost* there but not quite.
Sure it is. Have a look here..
Plays DivX (3.11, 4 and 5), Xvid, mpeg, whatever else you can toss at it. Has ethernet and streams all formats over it directly from your computer. Also plays mp3s, wmas, flacs, wavs and oggs in the same way (or from a burnt cd/dvd ofcourse).
And as if this was all not enough, the thing is StrongArm-based and runs Linux (though you'd never know unless you poked at it), making it very hackable.
About $250.

Sorry, wrong link. The link was of course: http://www.kiss-technology.com/

Waiting for the KISS DP-558
Nice, I guess...but I think I'll wait for the KISS DP-558 to be released:
DivX!
Ethernet
Webradio
MP3, Ogg Vorbis
JPG
80 GB HD
TV-tuner
DVD
Extremely slow site here.
From the website:
Record, Store and watch... Replacing VHS The KiSS DP-558 DVD Player has it all. It can offer playback of many different formats, from DVD, Video with DivX(R) 3.11, 4 and 5 and MPEG-4, or Audio with MP3, Standard Audio CDs and Ogg Vorbis, or Pictures with JPEG. You will also find on it all the features that has made the KiSS DP-500 famous with an Ethernet Connection in the back. If connected to a Broadband Internet Connection it will enable the user to play Internet Radio Station on his Player with WebRadio or enable the user to view or play his Audio/Video/Picture files from his PC with the user Friendly Software KiSS PC-Link. On top of these well known features, the KiSS DP-558 offers recording facilities, thanks to its TV Tuner, recording TV on its built-in Hard Drive will be as easy as it was done on VHS, with some major advantages such as very high sound quality, a sharp and clear image, no alteration of the content with time or easy content search. The KiSS DP-558 comes with an 80GB Hard Disk where the user can record TV programmes (average of 34 hours depending quality on settings) or store up to 117 good quality DivX(R) movies, easily accessible and downloadable on the Player's Hard Disk from a PC. The KiSS DP-558 also comes complete with the standard CD/MP3, Ogg Vorbis, DivX(R), XviD, CD-RW and DVD+-RW playback. -
Kiss DP-500 possibly a better alternative
divx.com sells the Kiss DP-500 progressive DVD-player for $299.99. I just ordered one so no first hand experience yet. It looks like it generally does what this device does, plus is a DVD player, can play MP3 CDs (and much more), has a strong list of outputs, and now has a Linux driver. The manufacturer has more details.
-
Re:DVD players with Ethernet?
Yep, check out the KiSS DP-500. It comes with a 10/100 Ethernet port that allows you to connect it to your pc. You can use this for webradio and also to stream audio, video and jpegs from your pc.
-
Check out the DP-500
I dont think this player is that hot. Check out the KiSS DP-500 which additionally supports DVD-RW and DVD+RW (the Bravo only supports DVD+-R), OGG and Divx 3.11, 4 and 5. The DP-500 also comes with a 10/100 ethernet port so that you can stream audio, video and jpegs directly from your computer. There's also a webradio feature to stream directly from the internet.
Yes there are still a few bugs in the software, as someone mentioned above, but they are slowly being worked out with new software releases. -
Sigma Designs - good or bad?
This is probably a good player. But it's just another incarnation of the Sigma Designs DVD kit.
See: Sigma Designs DVD Kits
And remember that Sigma Designs hasn't been too forthcoming with the OSS Community?
DivX Networks Press Release
XVID also has comments (look for "Sigma")
Anyway, there are several players out there already using these kits.
KISS Technology
Revoy -- to name a couple.
I bought one of these players myself (the KISS DP-500) and they are great, but still full of little bugs and the community is just building now to get into the GPL part of the source - just not sure how much of it we will be able to modify and now much will remain closed-source.
Here is a community of KISS owners so you can see what types of issues people are dealing with on these Sigma players. -
