Re:Safari runs like crap
Just curious...was BBEdit Lite straining to keep up as you typed that?
-
Re:I've really gotta wonder....
Not only that, but it takes over 20 minutes to transfer a 17 MB file from one folder to another. 20 Minutes.
In addition, during this file transfer, Safari will not work. And everything else will grind to a halt. Even Pages will straining to keep up if you want to type anything. -
GMail as the Notepad of the WebToday I realized that GMail's latest features make it an excellent replacement for Notepad and other basic desktop text editors. (Use its Save Draft feature so that you can edit your text whenever you want.)
GMail has a number of powerful advantages over Notepad:
- Filename is optional. No need to think of a unique filename to save under -- just enter your content and go.
- Search all your past files at once. Try that, Notepad!
- Spell-checking on demand
- Load/save your text files from any computer in the world
- Cross-platform
- Undo Discard. Ever wish you could retrieve your file after closing it without saving? Now you can!

No announcement
There is no announcement yet from Google of their change.
No there isn't, and I don't see any reason why they need to make one. However Marissa Meyer, Product Manager for Google explains the switch to answers.com:This decision was driven off of concern for our user experience. We are not paying answers.com for this service nor are they paying us. They were willing to work with us and design a website that we felt represented an improvement for our users over what was offered on dictionary.com (no pop-ups, dense information presentation).

My Tivo Sucks
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Tivo fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of a Tivo (a revision 3) for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to copy a 17 minute show from one machine to another. 20 minutes! At home, on my MiniITX running MythTV, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this Tivo, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
In addition, during this program transfer, the Channel Guide will not work. And everything else has ground to a halt. Even the media player software for the PC is straining to keep up as I type this.
I won't bore you with the laundry list of other problems that I've encountered while working on various Tivos, but suffice it to say there have been many, not the least of which is I've never seen a Tivo that has run faster than its Wintel counterpart, despite the Tivo's faster Linux architecture. My ReplayTV with 8gigs of HD runs faster than this machine at times! From a productivity standpoint, I don't get how people can claim that the Tivo is a superior machine.
Tivo addicts, flame me if you'd like, but I'd rather hear some intelligent reasons why anyone would choose to use a Tivo over other faster, cheaper, more stable systems.

Re:Apple?
You forgot to start your post off with "I don't want to start a holy war, but what is it with you Mac addicts? I'm sitting here at my freelance gig trying to copy . .
." Sorry, I'm just obsessed with the famous Kottke troll.
While I wouldn't expect the performance of a 400 Mhz G3 to be that great with OS X, I am still curious about your system. How much RAM do you have? The combination of the older, weaker processor and a small amount of RAM might be the problem. -
Re:Google only stands one chance
They have got to push firefox now, they need to find a way to own a spot on everbodies desktop and right now Firefox is the way to do that.
Or they could rebrand a modified version of Firefox as GBrowser and give that away to improve the number of clicks, and their already astronomical name recognition. -
Re:Fix the mini first, Apple
Sigh.. Mods miss the joke again...

Re:Macs
You just need to be a bit older to get it. Classic anti-Mac troll here.
-
This is such old news
Even Jason Kottke speculated on this in ummm, last September.
Is it more credible now that Slashdot's found the story? -
Re:Awesome! A New Troll!!!!I always kinda liked Kottke's opening words:
I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you Mac fanatics?
Anyway, the original can be found at Kottke.org, from Nov 25, 1998 (Scroll to the bottom).
What I like about the Kottke troll is that it is so versatile. You can substitute brands and products for comedic effect. For instance:I don't want to start a holy war here, but what is the deal with you <b>iPod</b> fanatics? I've been sitting here at my freelance gig in front of an <b>iPod Shuffle (1 GB)</b> for about 20 minutes now while it attempts to play an <b>Ogg Vorbis</b> file. 20 minutes. At home, on my <i>iRiveriGP-100</i>, which by all standards should be a lot slower than this iPod, the same operation would take about 2 minutes. If that.
Hilarity ensues. -
Re:Maybe he was just bitter
Actually this makes me wonder about this.
-
Re:My Mac sucks
Dude, I don't think that's actually Jason Kottke. I linked to it in my original post because it's a pretty well-known troll, or so I thought.
-
Benchmarks
And here's a bunch of performance benchmarks pitting the Mac mini against a range of other current Macs--not just abstract numbers but real-world tasks (think "17 Meg file"). I wonder how PCs stack up, particularly with Cinebench and the iTunes rip test...

Re:A Judge Comments:It's a spoof of this, which is/was a popular troll (there'd be more hits but Google browses Slashdot at +1) here. It's not even the first time I've spoofed it, and that time too, people took it way too seriously.
Either I have no sense of humour, or the rest of the world doesn't. I guess it's probably me...

Re:Why is FireFox such a big deal?
I think it's time for an enterprising AC to rework the parent post into a cut and paste one of these: http://www.kottke.org/98/11/my-mac-sucks

Ho Hum.. Old news..
This was reported back on September 8th that he lost.. granted it was a rumour back then, but it was reported by multiple sources, including this site.

Old News
I downloaded the final Jeopardy! audio clip yesterday from this website, but now the clip has been removed. (Stupid lawyers) Also, good 'ol Wikipedia has a good story, and also had the news/info yesterday somehow.

Luna? Oh no, not another one of you overly-pretensious folk. I assume you probably refer to the Sun as "Sol" as well? I, myself, prefer to be a little more Feynman than Gell-Mann.

Re:Not really a patentMy shops have always said Sue-Doh, as in I'm a fake super-user. I'm not sure what the etymology is, but I think that Sudo has become one of those words that the pronunciation of will vary depending onn where you heard it first, like "Data". Pseudophed rine is given a phonetic spelling "soo doe e FED rin" and sounds like this There have been other discussion of this subject too: http://www.kottke.org/remainder/04/02/5050.html
Short of a posting here on the official sudo site by Todd or Chris (both of whom I bet could care less) I'm gonna keep saying "Sue-Doh" out of homage to Homer Simpson. Perhaps MSFT's patent is based on the pronunciation?

More on online replacement to desktop software
At roughly the same time this thread was created here @./, jkottke posted this on his blog. Kottke goes beyond "replacing desktop software", flirting with the idea of "the web as a plattform". I think this is worth thinking about.

And for weblogs...
There's a very interesting post on kottke.org that discusses online applications in relation to weblogs. I quote:
Taking the weblog example to the extreme, you could use TypePad to write a weblog entry; Flickr to store your photos; store some mp3s (for an mp3 blog) on your ISP-hosted shell account; your events calendar on Upcoming; use iCal to update your personal calendar (which is then stored on your .Mac account); use GMail for email; use TypeKey or Flickr's authentication system to handle identity; outsource your storage/backups to Google or Akamai; you let Feedburner "listen" for new content from all those sources,
transform/aggregate/filter it all, and publish it to your Web space; and you manage all this on the Web at each individual Web site or with a Watson-ish desktop client. -

business model
Keep in mind that Google has additional avenues of business available to them. Not only have they built some phenominal search technology, but they have also demonstrated the versatility of Linux and the GooOS at maintaining a vast sea of computing hardware.
In the future it may be a Google-inspired operating system that we run for our enterprise computing tasks. The Google Search Appliance is a targeted business to test the culmination of this technology as a consumer product.
Time will tell, but I suspect this is a more robust company than the dot-bombs of the mid 90's. As always, skip the IPO and pickup stock after the initial boom cycle has given way to bust. Don't forget to read the prospectus and do the math to figure out what the company is *really* worth. -
Friendster's No-Hacking Policy
I'd like to point out this blog post on Kottke:
Moore's buddy Matt Chisholm chimes in to tell me about a similar hack, a JavaScript app he wrote with Moore that works on Friendster. It mines for information about anyone who looks at his profile and clicks through to his Web site. "I get their user ID, email address, age, plus their full name. Neither their full name nor their email is ever supposed to be revealed," he says.
Notified of the security holes Moore and Chisholm exploit, Friendster rep Lisa Kopp insists, "We have a policy that we are not being hacked." When I explain that, policy or no, they are being hacked, she says, "Security isn't a priority for us. We're mostly focused on making the site go faster." -
Google
This was touched on earlier but not fully expanded; Google isn't a search engine. It isn't a portal, or a SP, or even a web engine. It's an operating system, deisgned to run on thousanmds of servers, be self-healing etc etc. There's much more about this back here Cue, MS scalable OS for clusters. The first rule of "embrace and extend" is working out what to embrace, and I think they hit the nail on the head.

So old
While I don't want to be "that guy", this is an amazingly old link. It was made by Jason Kottke, and the girl in the ads is Megan Hourihan. It came out a year or two ago, along with the Segwa.y.
