iPod Your BMW. Says Apple, this is "The first seamless integration of iPod and automobile."Others had made similar homebrew iPod and non-iPod solutions before (and iPod and non-iPod after) Apple/BMW's solution.
At this point, it doesn't look like Apple has any official plans to unveil further integration of Apple technology with automobiles. Of course, Apple almost always "does not comment on unreleased products."

Re:VNC on Mac OS X
Does Chicken of the VNC support full screen? I currently use VNCViewer on my mac. I use RealVNC on my PCs. Since one of my PCs has two monitors (supported nicely in RealVNC), I like being able to run the client full screen and allow it to scroll. VNCViewer on the mac doesn't support this.

VNC GenealogyWhat we really need is some sort of family tree so we can trace how the various forks of VNC developed...
For our part, here's what we've settled on:
Win32 UltraVNC Linux / *NIX TightVNC for virtual framebuffers x11vnc for sharing out :0 (run from a command line asx11vnc -forever -passwd mysecretpw
Mac OS X OSXVNC for the server VNCViewer as the client I've heard good things about Chicken of the VNC (but haven't gotten around to trying it yet) Have fun! -

Re:Idiot Jukebox
Here's the cheapest/easiest way to give back:
First off, an eMac, the cheapest Mac available. Generally can be had in a decent config for $800.
If the eMac can sit near the stereo, problem solved. If your parents have a cell phone, get them upgraded to one with Bluetooth and install Salling Clicker on the cellphone - instant iTunes remote that works very well. There's your remote, and the bonus is that Salling Clicker doesn't require line of sight to operate like a typical remote. You either need Bluetooth as a BTO option on the Mac, or as a $30 dongle.
And if you want to control a stereo in the next room - well, that's what AirPort Express does nicely. I just installed a setup for a customer where they used one AirPort Extreme base station as the master (and hooked the cable modem up to it), and put Express stations all over the rest of the house to extend the network (with WDS) and access their stereos and printers around the house. Works great.
Just because you have the time/patience to set up and use Linux doesn't mean it's the answer to everyone. Parents (especially elderly ones) are not the target market for desktop Linux. We are.
Of course, my 29-month-old son is already a semi-capable Mac user (he has my wife's old G3 iMac) - he knows how to turn it on, pick a game to play, and put it to sleep when he's done playing. Then again, he occasionally has been known to mistake the slot-loading CD-ROM for a piggybank. -
Re:FoxtrotIf you look at his FAQ:
How far in advance do I draw my strips?
Not very, unfortunately. I tend to procrastinate more than I should, so I often turn my strips in to my syndicate roughly two weeks before they run in newspapers. My syndicate would prefer it if I had a lead time of four to six weeks. Because color must be added, my Sunday strips get turned in six or seven weeks in advance.

One step closer to Portable Profiles
The real benefit of this type device is that it brings us one step closer to a 'Portable Profile' feature - allowing one to connect to ANY Mac via Firewire and 'login' to their roaming profile. With an iPod to transport LARGE files like A/V and a
.Mac Account for managing preferences when you are Internet connected but don't have an iPod. The two (iPod and .Mac) would work well together and would help bolster the recurring revenue stream for Apple.
(PLUS, they would show non-Apple users how much farther ahead Apple is in the user experience game.)

Mac's lowest cost of ownership, ease of use
Flame me if you wish, but it's true.
Mac's always have had the lowest cost of ownership over PC's.
When the average turnover rate for a Dell is two years and the average turnover rate for Mac's is several years it's not to hard to figure out which platform is cheaper in the long run.
Of course Mac OS X is just plain gourgeous and very user friendly, happens to be very secure as well.

Re:Subaru of America warned of this, had recall
But in a WRX (you must have a bugeye since you have the seat bolt recall, I have an 04), why would you want to slow down?

Re:Bullshit!
So you can make it mismatch and match at the same time? Crumple it up to make it misaligned and look like a typewritten document, but it still matches Word exactly? Pretty clever!
Because the alignment distortion is consistent with modern photocopiers. Did you even look at the link I gave you? Here's a shorter one. Keep in mind that nothing comes even vaguely as close as MS Word.
As for not being required to finish his flight obligation, he signed documents to get into the Guard that he would spend 5 years flying, and only did three.
Well, seeing as he broke no rules and got an honorable discharge, I'd have to say everything went fine.
a standard flight physical which would have incidentally shown up his cocaine usage. He'd taken them before, and he sure as hell supports the war on drugs. I guess he just can't take the heat. He was also told that the Alabama outfit was not acceptable, went ahead on his own and flaked out from both bases anyway.
Where's the proof? Still being fabricated?
If he was typing up memos himself to cover his ass for Bush's outside interference
He couldn't type and the memos were forged. Please try to pay attention.
do you think it likely he'd blab to his wife? How old were his children then?
Okay, then, actual, legit documents show Killian praising Bush. Allow me to quote:
"Lt Bush is a dynamic outstanding young officer. He clearly stands out as a top notch fighter interceptor pilot. Lt Bush is possessed of sound judgement, yet is a tenacious competitor and an aggressive pilot. He is mature beyond his age and experience level as evidenced by his recent participation in the unit firing deployment."
Just give it up already, will you? You're embarassing yourself. -
Re:You aren't much of an expert eitherHere's a rather in-depth analysis for you.
Being crumpled up and run through a copier for a few generations will introduce some variation in the horizontal and vertical spacing (mostly to do with the position of the scanning element.)
But the main jist is that the forged memo is impossible to duplicate on any typewriter of the era -- even the best $3000 Selectric Composer typesetting machine. Whereas if you load up a modern version of MS Word, keep the default settings, and type up and print out the text of the memo, you get a perfect match.
everyone knew how pissed the colonel was about Bush playing fast and loose with his obligation
Says who? Proven liar Bill Burkett? Killian's former secretary (who is now a Democrat)? Killian's wife and son disagree with their claims, and the only hard evidence turned out to be forged.
Bush signed up for 5 yars flight obligation and walked away from the last two years.
Outright incorrect. Bush was denied a place in the flight line in Alabama (too many pilots), so he skipped an invasive medical exam and got grounded. He then finished off his point requirements for the year and left legitimately.
And besides, they were retiring his jet fighter anyway. Even if the option had been available to him, there wasn't enough time left in his Air National Guard duty to train for a new plane.
Sitting for 7 minutes reading a book like a deer in headlights while the country is udner attack --- what kind of bravery is that?
Waiting for the Secret Service to scout out the area and prep an alternate escape route. What did you want him to do, run the country by phone?
On a related note, accoring to Kerry's wife, Kerry was dumbstruck for 20 minutes on 9/11/01 (weren't we all?). Furthermore, Mrs. Kerry thinks Bush acted appropriately.
He can't even take responsibility for anything.
Well then hold him responsible for his actions. Don't let him off the hook this November -- re-elect him and make him deal with the consequences of his actions, good or bad. -

Re:Kos, WaMo...such as Hunter, put in a tremendous amount of effort in looking at the documents and, mostly, at the arguments against the documents.
Indeed. Allow me to quote Hunter in the article you linked to...
As I have said before, this "Typewriter" series was founded on one simple premise. The right-wing are liars. They have been liars. They will continue to be liars. It is part and parcel of modern "movement" conservatism. And, indeed, they were lying in this case as well, and continue to do so, and will probably continue until the day the Rapture, space aliens, or tainted Big Macs finally come to take them away.
That "one simple premise", in my book, does not show very rigorous research. I remember Baghdad Bob complaining, when people were questioning him about reports of US Soldiers in Baghdad, how the US were liars. And that is why we should believe him over the pictures of tanks rolling down the Baghdad highway.
Well I looked further. Poor soul is (just as I said) still stuck on whether or not there was proportional spacing when everyone else is talking about typesetting technologies.
Well you decide. For all their sophmoric hijinks, here is an article linked to from LGF. Compare that to the Kos article which had the following as the only points of technical merit. You tell me if the Kos article shot down all of the points like it says it does...
Did proportional type exist back in the dark ages of 1972? Yes.
Did "Times New Roman" and similar fonts exist? Yes.
Did superscript "th" characters exist? Yes.
Could "centering" be accurately achieved on a typewriter? Sigh. Yes.
Could typists correctly determine where to wrap words so that they would not run over the margins of the page? (What, are you stupid?) Yes.
And so on, and so on, as each argument was shot down, and new ones arose to assert themselves. That's it. That was the crux of the argument. Then we went from typeface to signatures, to what slang terms were or were not common during the Vietnam era, etc. etc. And still, they were shot down.
It is a real travesty that this is what you call collecting and analyzing at great length. And this is someone you point to as an intellectual at Kos? -

Re:The latest about the Bush documents.
It is ENTIRELY IRRELEVANT to the Bush documents that some machine that a critic has chosen cannot do typesetting. Just choose another machine that can.
However, it is not at all irrelevant that the only typewriter that anybody has suggested to be the origin of the message does not produce text with matching line lengths. Indeed, nobody has managed to find any system of that era capable of reproducing the line lengths, while a modern computer word processor does it perfectly with its default settings. Since algorithms of character spacing have evolved since the 1970's, it is astronomically improbably that any system of that era, known or unknown, typewriter or even typesetter will reproduce those relative line lengths.
"This typeface is the property of Monotype Typography and its use by you is covered under the terms of a license agreement. You have obtained this typeface software either directly from Monotype or together with software distributed by one of Monotype's licensees." Microsoft Word ONLY follows the information in this file.
If you are arguing that the document could also have been produced by another modern word processor, such as Open Office, using the same font definition, that is certainly true, although unlikely. What it could not be is a 1970's vintage system using the letter spacing methods of that time.
All of this should indicate that no one should be surprised if something typeset today looks exactly like something done so recently as 1972.
Anybody who knows about the evolution of character spacing since 1972 would be very surprised if the line lengths were the same, even though the individual characters might look identical.
Mary Carr Knox, Lt. Colonel Killian's secretary, supplied some valuable information
In particular, she has denied having access to any machine office capable of producing the typography in those memos. -

Re:You can do it digital if you want
You measure the impulse response of your desired tube system
Mmmmmmm..... if I recall correctly, an impulse is theoretically "white" so the response represents the system's response to all frequencies. That's with a n infinitely narrow (time) and high (amplitude) impulse.
The problem with tube modeling is that the system is non-linear. The frequency response *changes* with amplitude. I've also heard that it changes with the blend of tones, though I take that with a grain of salt. The claim is that a strong bass note (for example) will affect the frequency response in upper registers.
I see the problem as an ignorance of the effects of inductance & reactance. RC systems are fairly easy to model digitally, but RLC systems are less well understood by digital implementors who blew through analog class without much respect.
Tube amps have giant-o-normous output transformers for matching high impedance tube outputs to low impedance speakers (I think- I'm one of those analog diss-ers trying to learn at a late age).
This causes low damping factor- the ability of the amp to deal with back EMF of the speaker and control it "tightly."
Bob Carver built some transistor amps with low damping factor as a demonstration that much of the tube "sound" was this simple property. High damping factors was something tube people always strived for so when transistor amps could do it easily, people *chose* to build amps that way.
Transformers also have problems like core saturation. Something that strikes me odd is that better (electrically, not audiophile-tweaky) transformers which might actually sound less "tubey" are valued by audiophiles.
Incidentally, tube guitar amps have an advantage of high input impedance: good when dealing with a monster coil like a guitar pickup. Bipolar transistor pre-amp stages are not a good idea, but FETs work if you want to be able to carry your amp outside on a cold night after practicing without hearing the sound of glass breaking. Anyone remember VOMs?
I'm planning on building one of these to drive a pair of these.
A very similar kit is availble from "Antique Electronics" and S5.
The build will give me a chance to bone up on my languishing soldering skills, but more importantly, I want to build a nice case like this guy did. -

Re:i dont mean to brag but...And you consider that to be good font rendering?
You even commented on some of the problems.
In Luxi Sans, the w, c, and d all have some unevenness; the e's crossbar is too high.
Trebuchet has dropouts in its e's, and its w is uneven.
Times isn't antialiased at all. Verdana is too thin for its size (and the V is about to fall apart).
The g in Impact is blocky and has some strange lumps.
Georgia almost looks aliased. Here's a screenshot comparison between your original and the same fonts rendered by MacOS X. (I have most, but not all of the fonts). IMHO, the righthand (MacOS) side looks superior - more like actual typeset text. So what's up? Does freetype suck that badly? Are you using the non-hinted version of freetype? Is this a screen gamma difference? I used Linux/X11/freetype2 daily for a couple of years, and I never got the fonts to look the way I wanted them to. It's almost like the contrast setting is wrong, not to mention the subpixel precision of the glyph control points is out of whack (what's with the V in Verdana, anyway?).
Of course, the flipside is to say that the freetype-rendered text looks crisper, less blurry - especially Impact. I appreciate that distinction - but for me, the consistency of shape and the evenness of the glyph weighting is more important than the apparent focus.
