Not just that. Mod support like Desert Combat.

This was also the cause why the original Doom (written in C++) never got any mods.

Classic Doom 3
There was a reimagining of episode 1 for Doom 3 about a decade ago. Here is E1M2.

Brutal Doom already did it
Here, just download this:
http://www.moddb.com/mods/brut...I've been playing Brutal Doom with its "Hell on Earth starter pack" and it's turning out to be a better reboot than any of the official games. Strong weapons, insane quantities of enemies, fun tricks with the Doom engine, and, believe it or not, a strong story supported directly by the level design.
I enjoyed Doom 3 and will likely get this new Doom, but I still think this free game is the best "story of Doom" out there.

Re:Sigh
I do wonder if ridiculous amounts of VRAM may end up being useful in game engines that are currently only on the horizon - for example, Outerra's 1:1 scale planet engine renders mostly in GPU. One wonders too about RAM demand of something like Euclideon's "unlimited detail" engine (assuming it isn't vapourware). If we're moving to games that do more in the GPU, then maybe stupid amounts of VRAM might actually get used? Then again, I expect if that were to happen (using complex GPU-based world generators), the compute performance is going to matter too...
I can still remember when I couldn't understand how you'd ever fill a 2GB hard drive... (this was before video on computers was a serious thing, obviously). 12GB VRAM is just bonkers.

Try a BETTER version (Doom 3 Engine)
See subject & "Classic DOOM" -> http://www.moddb.com/mods/clas...

:)(It's what DOOM I/II should have been ALL along, albeit, rendered on the DOOM III Engine, instead...)

Re:FREE free or "free with strings attached"?
I'm going to toss a big [Citation needed] and at the same time point out that Source 1 doesn't have this requirement for its free version.
As an example, the original mod version of The Stanley Parable was distributed through ModDB.
Then again, Source 1's free version has licensing terms that prevent you from selling anything you produce with it at all.
-
Moddability anyone?
So how would one go about making and installing course mods and the like for Mario Kart 8? Other games in the Assassin's Creed series have mods.

It was all about the mods (BF2142 and earlier)
I stopped caring about the Battlefield franchise after 2142, not because of the bundled content, but because of the rich community of modders around it.
I spent countless hours playing fun things like Pirates, or the "starwars" clones Galactic Conquest & First Strike, and even some mods that later spawned official content such as Eve of Destruction (Vietnam) and Desert Combat (2). When you got bored of mindlessly shooting others, you could race with cars in fantastic impossible "stunt" like racetracks with IS1982 which also had a "cars with guns" game mode.
You could also play a better WWII (go figure) theme with Forgotten Hope.
The current BF games are the same thing over and over again. I have been waiting for some killer (open?) 3d engine where a large mod community emerges again.
The source mods community had some nice titles such as the abandoned Age of Chivalry (don't mention the lame retail game).
Interestingly Star Citizen from another genre promises to allow complete and total modding for private servers, which is the exact opposite the "industry" wants to go. $50million crowdfund? Gotta be doing something right...
A good game has to be made away from the large publisher industry. It is seriously a stain to have the EA brand now.

Re:STALKER PC Game Series
There's also Lost Alpha, which is a recreation of an early S.T.A.L.K.E.R. alpha version. Many, many changes, so it's a must for any SoC fan. It's a full conversion and a stand-alone install but like any of the STALKER games it has its share of bugs. So... It's like visiting the zone for the first time all over again.

Re:Very old games
If you like SMAC, may I recommend Planetfall? It's an attempt to do SMAC in Civilization 4. It's pretty good, it's missing some of the better parts, but I do like it.

Re:Frameworks are great, but ...
Unreal is used for FPSes, as well as 2.5d side scrollers like unmechanical. People were building flight sims with the Quake 1 engine (Airquake). Simply having a 3D engine doesn't shoehorn you in to a particular style of play.
Not just Quake. A little over a decade ago I worked on a vehicle-based total conversion for the original Unreal Tournament that centered on air combat.

Mods Are Better
This BFG edition is a JOKE compared to the mods (100% made by volunteer work) I've been playing lately. I've seen volunteer effort replace almost ALL the textures with HD textures (very nicely done, looks like professional quality), add in bloom/HDR, add in parallax occlusion mapping (high-end computers only!), add in new monsters, and probably more I'm forgetting. Just get a $10 or $5 copy of the Doom 3 from 2004 and get some of these FREE mods, and the game will look so good you'll think it was made in 2010 or 2011 and it's TOTALLY worth playing it again with them installed. And if you're a pussyshit who plays with the room lights turned on and you don't understand the word "atmosphere", then YES, you can get a mod to tape a flashlight to your gun. A short list of the best mods (Note: these mods can be a son of a bitch to install, especially if you want more than one. I'd advise you just get the mod from the bottom-most URL if you want a painless experience):
Perfected Doom 3 (adds HDR bloom and other effects)
Wulfen (High-Def) Texture Pack (lots of HD textures and parallax maps for them)
HD Mod (e-z to install compilation of many other high-def mods) -

Re:The questions developers ask
It would be really hard for me to recommend a single mod without knowing your playing style, some of the mods are designed for more of a "run 'n gun big battles" kinda thing, while others are made for more of an elite style "build yourself up and watch for the factions" kinda thing. Head on over to ModDB and check them out for yourself, there are dozens to choose from no matter which style you prefer.
if you are asking for my personal favs? i like Crossfire, expanded universe is fun, just be sure you download the Freelancer mod manager as it makes switching easy peasy and to answer your questions a GIANT YES to open play, you can just fuck the story and go do what you will, mine, raid, collect bounties, and as you can see from the dates on ModDB its still got plenty of modders. If you can't find your original game its a cheap 10 bucks at Amazon and if you always wanted to be let loose in a big universe to go your own way thanks to the mods you can do that and more...enjoy and maybe you'll run into me mining in one of the belts! Oh and I haven't given it a full run yet but Discovery Mod has fricking HUGE universe, 200+ ships, all flyable, 134 systems, just tons of stuff!

Re:Has anyone actually made any worthwhile with th
98% of artists won't make substantial contributions for free.
Erm... The world of computer game modding would disagree with you. I've done (free) work on projects where professional artists and animators helped out in their spare time - partly for fun, partly to extend their portfolios. There are countless more talented amateurs out there, either fishing for jobs in the games industry or again just doing it for fun. (I accidentally ended up with a job at a big-name developer through my modding stuff...)
I think one of the problems with many open source games is that they are, quite frankly, really dull. The approach seems to be either "let's clone an elderly, existing game" or approaching the whole thing as an engineering project with little thought towards gameplay, sound or art.
Look around places like ModDB if you want help. If nobody's interested in your game idea, then perhaps it needs something of a rethink? That, or help out with an existing game mod - they're always short of programmers, and while it's not open source, building up some contacts could be helpful for when you do strike out and build a game from scratch...

Re:Goldeneye remake -- any good?
Thief - not exactly a remake, it is "inspired by Thief and improves it" and in my opinion (which is biased as I am one of the developers
:) is much better:http://www.thedarkmod.com/ (see also http://www.moddb.com/mods/the-dark-mod)

If you really want some Star Wars action in space, I've only one suggestion: Freeworlds: Tides of War, a mod for Freelancer. It's as close to a remake as it'll get and more.

Re:Your backyard..
It would have been nice if he would give some idea of location. Is this in the US, Europe, etc.? Someone here might know the local geography. The bits of metal don't look all that weird to me. It could be there because of a battle, a deposit of iron ore or other natural deposit. Are there any old mines in the area?
And do you have any food synthesizers that went down?
Yeah, I'm wondering if we're being punked with a video game promotion....

Re:Poll; what was the best game created on Doom 3?
Classic Doom 3. It's not exactly what you want (they only ported the shareware episode), but they did a reasonably good job with that, and it's free anyway.
-
Re:Yeah
Haha yeah, I kinde wondered why nobody called me out on that yet... I'm just bitter because I like L4D (versus mode) a lot, and Valve made a lot of promises with regards to "continous updates a lá TF2". Instead they moved on to L4D2 (and selling stuffed zombies FFS). Rargh.. but okay, in the big scheme of gaming devs it's probably silly to call them greedy whores uh. Still, rargh! ^^
As for Steam, I like that. Being able to run it on as many machines as you wish (obviously only being able to run one of them at the same, but still) might even be more generous than the licenses of many titles that come on CD/DVD. But then again the little gaming I do these days is multiplayer only, so the whole "you have to connected" thing isn't a gripe for me.
I wonder what Desura will bring... (only PC and XBOX though it seems ugh)

Re:Then make games that are fun for more than 4 ho
Nethack
Second dungeon level. I see a fountain. Decide to drink from it to see if I could get a wish. Become surrounded by snakes.
Decided what my next step would be.
I had started with the Sleep spell, so I could make all the snakes fell asleep and then kill them with the help of my pet
I also had a scroll of Scare Monster so I could make them go away and climb to the previous level to recover health (I was low on health).
Or I could engrave the E-word and forced the snakes to not attack me for a few turns and wait to on that spot to heal back my health and in the meanwhile let my pet take care of them. The problem is that I only had a Magic Marker to engrave, and I didn't want to waste charges
I decided to play it safe and use the scroll of Scare Monster to run away because I wasn't sure I could cast Sleep on all the snakes before they killed me.
That being said, I heard that the game gets a little repetive the further you go down the dungeon.
Although one of the best games I played last year was I Wanna Be The Guy, which is pretty much linear (you can decide the order you take the paths, but you have to take them all), but it nailed that "One more try" feeling (especially when the try usually takes 1 or 2 seconds...).
Right now I've been playing a game that uses the same engine called I Wanna Be The Fangame except that music doesn't work on WINE, so it's not as fun to play as the original.
-
Re:I remember Elite
Actually as a loooong time Freelancer player I would say you have to consider the retail game more of a demo really. if you want to enjoy the real Freelancer you need to go to one of the many Freelancer mods sites, as the mods if what makes Freelancer, both single player and MMO. Thanks to the modders there are still tons of places and things I haven't done in a game released in 2003, new ships, systems, factions...it is fricking huge! Just pick up the excellent Freelancer Mod Manager and you are good to go. Works in Windows 7 x64 BTW.
As for games not on the list? I would go with Starflight because that game was so huge and different for the time. Both the PC and later Sega Genesis games gave you so much to do, explore and a pretty long mystery to solve. All in all a great game and one I would love to see done on a PC with today's tech.
-
Re:Or to put that in other words
Just for the hell of it I tried and managed to pull it off ONE time and you are right, the rednecks are a royal bitch. The way I got around them was having a "quick switch" set up between the shovel and the taser, so i used the shovel to 'stun" them from a distance and the taser to lay them out long enough for me to get past. on areas where there are more than one redneck you can stand as you are tasering with the redneck you are tasering as a "living shield" between you and the rednecks, as rednecks killing other rednecks shouldn't count, right? But I must have went through that level 30 times before I managed to pull it off.
If you have Share the pain and AW you have got to try a week in paradise as it truly cranks up the insanity in postal 2. And good luck getting through on the new "real fucking hard" difficulty level, as it gives everybody high powered weapons and a bloodthirsty desire to see you dead. Totally crazy.
-
Re:Slashdotted
ModDB also has download links.

Re:The Most Idiotic Gaming Article Ever On Slashdo
That is one of the reasons i stick with PC gaming, the mods give you so much more replay than you ever get with a console. Take Freelancer for instance. While the original game was fun, with the Freelancer Mod manager loaded full of cool mods it is like I have a dozen new games to go with the original. Hell of a good deal for the $35 I paid for it at Gamestop awhile back. This game was released in 2003 and there are STILL new mods coming out for it. To me that is value for my gaming dollar.
And while console gamers scream "PC Gaming is expensive!" it really isn't unless you get into that whole epeen "must be able to get 60 FPS on high everything on Crysis!" BS. I just built myself a new AMD dual core, and since I already had XP X64 I picked up awhile back with shipping and all the box cost a whole $281. I will play on the built in 3100 for a week until I can pick up a $100 card, which will probably last me a couple of years before needing replacing. The P4 3.6GHz box it replaced has had maybe $500 spent on it over the last 6 years counting building it and my oldest is playing Left 4 Dead on it right now, thanks to a $50 X1650 Pro GPU upgrade. So for me PC gaming is the way to go. The mods give me so much more for my gaming dollar than anything I have seen with the consoles.
I mean where else can you still get new gaming experiences for a game you paid a whole $35 for that came out in 2003?

The article is WRONG, no gigant, but a 3D skybox.
Half-Life engine uses a tecnique to have "3D skybox" using a special room where stuff displayed here show in the sky, so anything there looks gigantic.
