Re:uh right...
Actually you can get mouse gestures and whole whack of other spiffy extensions/add-ons for Mozilla.
-
All M$ does this.Once again, free software shines. I'm not sure how the silly IE thing works, but reasonable OS simply use Google's web form. Yes, Mozilla does have it, but, it's just another web page. Also, on reasonable OS, you browse the web with an underprivalidged user that can't change any real system files and it's impossible for Google or any other web site to actually modify the browser. IE, on the other hand, was intentionally designed to be raped. This is how many M$ worms propagate and wreck people's computers.
Really, all M$ software is designed to be abused by Microsoft at will. The upgrade train has been automated. Where once you had to actually buy games or new programs to get "patches" and "updates" to sytem files like ActiveX, DirectX and other DLL hell files, Microsoft has finally moved up to web distribution. Now Microsoft users feel compelled by fear of worms and viruses to push the "update" advertisment that pops up on their screen without asking. System obsolescence is garunteed and as before the only way to keep a M$ box working is to not install newer software on it or use it for browsing and email.
This Xbox thing that prevents free software from running is sure to find it's way to XP. XP already has a patented and secret filesystem, NTFS, and this was done simply to frustrate free software users. While systems like Knoppix can read and write to one of the three NTFS version, distributing software like that is a risky proposition in the US as the writers and distributors may be charged with patent infringment. NTFS adds very little to user data security for the cost, and certianly adds less than other freely available file systems such as ext3. The xbox is Micsrosoft's user lockin test bed and anyone who ever bought one has helped fund the next generation of screw you hardware.
If you would not contribute to this kind of behavior, dump Microsoft now while the alternatives work.

Re:Thus defeating the object?
however, if you have ever tried to get joe-average-desktop-user to set up gpg or pgp then you know that something has to be made easier! even the point-n-click solutions like winpt or mac-gpg (my fave!) make my dad's head ring.
Really, now... I've gotten several of my friends, friends who use Windows, and mostly for games, email, and word processing, to use GnuPG. Naturally, they can't (and don't care to learn how to) use it well on the command-line or really use it to its full potential, but they can use it for email.
It's a matter of downloading the Win32 build from gnupg.org (anybody who uses the Internet can click to download something) and extracting it to c:\gnupg, which nowadays Windows can do without a helper, then installing Mozilla Thunderbird (or the Mozilla suite) and Enigmail. All basically point-and-click. Enigmail even helps you create a keypair.
It's hardly difficult to do, and even understanding the basics ("If I sign this but don't encrypt it, anybody can read it, but they'll know I wrote it... If I encrypt it, then only the person[s] I encrypt it to will be able to read it, but there's no guarantee I sent it... etc.) are not difficult, I think, for the average user. It's just that not enough people know such a thing exists, and is so easy to use.
I point to a short informational page at the bottom of all my email (it's all signed). It's not much yet, mostly links, but it may help spread the awareness of PGP, at least to people with whom I exchange email.
-
Re:What about the local network?
Have you tried Enigmail + Mozilla? That gets to be about as painless as normal mail; all that happens is you have to type in your GPG passphrase once in awhile.
Get It Now! GPG 4 EVER, f00! :) -

Re:Another freaking browser?
My jaw has permanently cemented itself to the floor...another fucking browser????
Then you must be really unfamiliar with Gnome and the direction it's been taking since 2.0, and I'm afraid your ignorance shows. Epiphany has been around for many months now, it has different goals than Galeon, and most importantly, all this has been discussed to death already. If you don't know Epiphany and why it was created, why don't you just read up on the reasons instead of bitching and swearing that someone more informed than you has made a decision you don't like?
don't you think there are other places to spend your time
Where do you get off telling other people what to do with their time? This is Free Software. If you're not happy with it, why don't you just make a contribution yourself? I haven't seen you around on the mailing lists where the reasons for replacing Galeon with Epiphany were discussed extensively, and where the right decision was taken by general consensus... -
Re:GNOME 2
The way you have worded your message, I'm inclined to think that you haven't used Gnome 2 at all. There is nothing wrong with having "more than one way to do it", but some of the assertions you make are, at the very least, disturbing.
*Especially* for the less technically inclined it would be better to have as many different ways as possible to do something.
You are probably the first person I know who think this way. When someone is presented with a new desktop environment (or is a "less technically inclined" person, if you will), he/she usually just wants to go straight to the point and get the job done. Providing two or more ways to accomplish something (in a graphical desktop) is rather pointless when you have one way that is truly usable. Tweaking your way to the perfect configuration of your graphical desktop is still an option for the curious user who have the time/interest to use this and that configuration-management resources, but targetting your software to the average user is not neccesarily a bad thing (in fact, it is usually a Very Good Thing).
If you look at usability studies they always say how the test persons all tried different things to do the required task and how half of them got stuck on the way and didn't know what to do
This usually happens when things are ambiguous. Given the context you have made your remark in, it seems like you don't know, or don't understand, very basic concepts of usability. Again, it makes me think that you don't really know Gnome 2, as it's almost impossible to use it and not become aware of their very well thought interface, highly influenced by good standards.
Have you used Epiphany? Have you seen how easy and direct is the process of managing cookies, bookmarks, etc. in it? Its interface is not by any means a coincidence, as Epiphany developers strive towards usability.
One thing Windows gets right is that there is always more than one way to reach your goal. (e.g. you can adjust the time by double clicking on the clock, by using the context menu of the clock, by using the control panel etc.)
Your analogy suggests a comparison between bookmarks/cookie management within a web browser and clock adjusters. The example is not very good. Anyway, you comment brings up the interesting point of having multiple interfaces to the same underlying data. In the case of Gnome 2 (and this applies to Epiphany's settings), every setting is usually available as a GConf key/value. That basically means that there's nothing really stopping you from using virtually any interface to update your applications' settings. The GConf model brings a lot more cool features, but that's beyond this discussion.
Having one elegant solution is nice (...) but if you look at speech there are many different ways to express a thought, perhaps one is more elegant than the others but all may be correct and logical.
I think it's important to keep things in context. We're talking about desktop environments and usability. I agree with your comment on the way speech express thoughts, but let's think about graphical computer applications:
user A thinks "I want to change the time, that should be possible by doing something with the clock thingy" but in user B's opinion it's "I want to change a setting, it should be in the control panel"
Maybe this is not a perfect analogy (the clock example isn't very fit in the first place), but in the case of Epiphany cookie/bookmarks administration, it could go something like: user A thinks "I want to setup my cookies, they should be on my web browser's menu" (yes, under Gnome, even when the web browser is called "Epiphany", you can run it via (main menu)-->Applications-->Int

Re:Trying to switch from Mozilla...
Right now Thunderbird does not support opening links in Firebird. Or any browser, for that matter. Firebird however, can have thunderbird (or any mail client of your choosing) intercept mailto: links on web pages.. MozEx.
-
Re:GPG Support
Thunderbird supports enigmail. You can download the latest version on enigmail I was using a night build and there weren't any problems nor aren't with this release.

Re:loving firebird
It seems like configuration is always a problem of finding the right balance between presenting too many options to the user, and not presenting enough. Mozilla's approach is to make an easy to use Preferences control panel available, and by including about:config for use by power users.

Re:I didn't get a message
Download Prefbar for Mozilla and spoof your UA as IE. BTW, it works fine for me even without UA spoofing.
-
Re:Will this be what kills the referer header?
...Mozilla/Firebird/etc (and Opera) can be easily modified to not send [a referrer header]...For Mozilla/Firebird/etc, just install the Prefbar addin. It can be customized to include a send referrer button. Personally, I like the kill flash button the best. Makes those dancing flash ads quiet, while still allowing me to use flash.
-
Can control referer with RefSpoof for Mozilla
Just head over to here and get the extension. There is even a "Ref=URL" checkbox to make your browser always use the current URL as the referer string so unless websites start blocking themselves, no problem. The good news is that it was just updated to be Firebird compatible as well.

Some notes
You can get a google toolbar for IE.
Or... You can create a bookmark (this feature is in 1.4, not sure about 1.3) to "http://www.google.com/search?&q=%s". Go to manage bookmarks, and change the keyword to "google" for that bookmark. Now you can just type "google your search terms here."
And finally, instead of CTRL + SHIFT + O, try Ctrl+ L, just like IE. -
Re:Problem with browsers that aren't IE.
Here is a neat mozilla trick.
1) Set google as your default search.
2) Highlight any word on a page and right click.
3) Choose web search for "Word I Just Highlighted"
Voila a google search.
BTW moz1.5 has a spell checker and 1.4 users can install one here
Mozilla has so many ways to have fun there is never any need to use IE. Have you played around with profiles yet? -
Re:*Another* problem with browsers that aren't IE.

Re:Problem with browsers that aren't IE.You obviously haven't yet found the GoogleBar for Mozilla/Firebird.
From memory, it has more features than the original (IE version) had. Absolutely mandatory for anyone moving from IE to Moz.
cheers!
-
and the googlebar
Everytime a mozilla milestone is released the only two mods I bother installing without fail are the orbit theme, and the mouse gestures...
And the googlebar, a beautifully done open source project!
People think the google bar is about having a search box in your browser. It's not. It's about clicking on your search terms and having them found in the page. Saves me hours!! -

you mean this?

You're welcome. Have fun with Firebird.

:) It kind of worked in 1.5a, except for the reload animation missing.Of course I'm joking - I can wait for a compatible version of the Orbit theme to be released, and in the meantime the default Modern theme looks almost as good.

Multi Computer Bookmark Management
On a related note companion for mozilla has been released in version 0.3.5a. It allows Yahoo bookmarks to be used in mozilla. It is still a little spotty and is best used by eliminating all your yahoo bookmarks and adding them one at a time. Do not add folders more than 3 levels deep.
This is the last bit most of my coworkers need to switch from IE to Mozilla. Next I try to move them to Linux. -
Re:Actually, the top links are adsIronically, I find the only thing that makes IE usable at all for me is the current Google toolbar, which implements the popup-blocking that Microsoft neglected to include in their user-hostile browser.
try firebird (has native popup blocking):

Nice, but only good on new hardware.
OpenOffice, mozilla don't make good use of the hardware, especially with >1Ghz and >128Mb of ram, Openoffice just slows to a halt or crash and burn. Yes we have tried OpenOffice 1.1, but its still too slow, just because they changed the bootstrap sequence to make the initial window appeear faster, dosent means its fast now.. Mozilla is not so bad if you don't use the XUL front end (use a front end such as jan6, thunderbird (which is the browser we use), or konqueror).
Our company runs Microsoft office 2000 on our 300 gentoo workstations that have 128 Mb. We can't afford the $150,000 to upgrade the RAM (and the hard drives) so we can use OpenOffice (and then face the horrible fonts it uses as it uses its own propeitry font handling system)
My company outsources about 15% of its programming work to taiwan and the poor support for the Chinese character set means we have to run the Chinese version of Microsoft Office on a dedicated windows 98 box to read the documents from the taiwanese office. (no, crossover office dosen't work on non english versions of Microsoft Office).
So to summurize, for our company to be to completey Linuxized, we need a unbloated version of openoffice that can work with >128 Mb of ram and a version of crossover office that supports the Chinese edition of microsoft office. -
MODERATORS ON CRACK AGAINGnome 2.4, the desktop environment you have waited for, sucks more than 2.2 did. We advice you to install kde 3.1.4 from CVS until gnome 2.5 comes out. The following features will NOT be present, despite your constant whining
- The new file dialog
- The Galeon web browser. We chose January6 [mozdev.org] instead, because who wants tabbed browsing except you jerks. Look at mozilla, and you will see why we choose this lovley netscape 2 clone.
- We will make file extration harder, because we don't want to waste space on the context menu. We have removed "Extract here" and you will now have to go though 5 menus to avoid going into the console and typing tar xjvzfcaq file.tar.gz.
- We have made panel configuaration harder. Instead of an intuitve size dropdown with small large ect we have repaced it with a harder to use spinbox. This is beaucse the sizes upset stallman because we didn't have his trouser size in it so we replaced it. Have fun taking 20 clicks instead of 2. PS we removed the cute goat logo in the about box, now you have to look at the foot!
- We will STILL not be including a media player, sure you can reboot into windows or play with mplayer from the command line. Why because our media libray [gstreamer.net] sucks and we don't want to use a superior [xine.org] implemnetation.
- We added fake cmyk support in the gimp. Sure it LOOKs like it, but when you try to prepress or print it will look like monkey shit
- We added a better weather applet, but it won't work on rainy days
- Wanda the fish actually looks like a fish now
- We added a menu editor, but when you use it you have to reboot for the changes to take effect
- We made the gnome-terminal compatible with emacs, but you will need a czech keyboard to be compatible with the obscure keybindings.
- As usual, we took more options away from the prefrences dialog and hid them in gconf where they belong
-

- They have made panel configuaration harder. Instead of an intuitve size dropdown with sizes like small medium large ect they have have replaced it with a harder to use spinbox. Have fun taking 20 clicks instead of 2. They also removed the cute goat logo in the about box, now you have to look at the foot!
- They STILL will not be including a media player, sure you can reboot into windows or play with mplayer from the command line. Why because their media libray sucks and they don't want to use a superior implemnetation.
- We added fake cmyk support in the gimp. Sure it LOOKs like it, but when you try to prepress or print it will look bad
- They have added a better weather applet, but it won't work on my town anymore while the 2.2 one works perfectly
- Wanda the fish actually looks like a fish now
- They have added a menu editor, but when you use it you have to restart the panel by using their xkill applet.
- They have made the gnome-terminal compatible with emacs, but they rearranged the key bidnings
- As usual, they took more options away from the prefrences dialog and hid them in gconf where I can't find them
-
Gnome 2.4 changelog.Gnome 2.4, the desktop environment you have waited for, sucks more than 2.2 did. We advice you to install kde 3.1.4 from CVS until gnome 2.5 comes out. The following features will NOT be present, despite your constant whining
- The new file dialog
- The Galeon web browser. We chose January6 instead, because who wants tabbed browsing except you jerks. Look at mozilla, and you will see why we choose this lovley netscape 2 clone.

This is beaucse the sizes upset stallman because we didn't have his trouser size in it so we replaced it. Have fun taking 20 clicks instead of 2. PS we removed the cute goat logo in the about box, now you have to look at the foot!

Re:Awww, that's too bad.
Finally someone who compares apples !
Thunderbird is definitely the most directly comparable OSS client to OE. And a great competitor. Whereas a lot of people find Mozilla AppSuite to be a bit sluggish and "heavy", the birds just fly !
Thunderbird is good looking, slim and speedy and has all the right settings you need. Including a great spamfilter integrated.
Evolution, Kmail, Mozilla Appsuites Mailnews.. All are nice email clients, but none are directly comparable to OE ;
- Evolution is more of an Outlook clone, with more features and a bit different UI, also not available for Windows.
- Kmail is not available on windows in a native enough manner that most people can "download and install"
- Mozilla Appsuite is not only an email client, and can only be installed with the browser (incidentally making links from email messages open in anything other than Mozilla is difficult too !)
So Thunderbird has my vote as the definitive OE killer ! Get installer packaged builds from here and spread to your friends :

Re:What he said
Might be of interest: Text / Plain extension for Mozilla - "Treats selected plain text urls, and email addresses as links and adds options to the context menu on how to use these".
Also, select plain text link in text and if you have tab bar visible then drag & drop the text to tab bar background, "Open a new tab" or "Close Tab" button. And dragging text to existing tabs title changes it's URL. -
Re:NASA image of man-made light.
If you're using IE, middle click on the page to 'autoscroll' around in both dimensions. There is an extension for Mozilla and Firebird that does the same thing: http://autoscroll.mozdev.org/ .

Re:I have a question
Ask that Lindows guy... Oh, you can't, he's been on Ask Slashdot recently and won't be here anytime soon, busy donating cash to Mozdev or funding some other Xbox Linux prize.

Re: Any OTHER OS browsers? It doesn't seem like there's another game in town for Windows. KHTML is limited to *nix and OS X (AFAIK), and I don't know of any open source HTML rendering engines other than Gecko and KHTML.
Of course, it looks crappy, too.
I believe this is a moot point. The default theme is horrid, I agree, but there are a variety of themes to choose from at http://themes.mozdev.org. <personal_preference>Orbit 3+1 rules!</personal_preference>. And I don't notice Mozilla's speed problems, but I have a top-of-the-line computer, and understand that not everybody else does, and I understand it's something the Mozilla team needs to work on.
