Josh Barnett Exercises
I know of one geek who exercises well(I know it's MySpace, but he's not a computer geek).

Myspace's authentication is a joke.
Every Myspace user that logs in to Myspace sends their username and password in the clear.
It's been that way from the beginning, and the shiny new redesign didn't help.Ironically, the URL it gets sent to is:
http://secure.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=login.processHey, there's a "secure" in the hostname, it must be okay!
So... When Myspace becomes an OpenID provider, will the OpenID authentication page be over plain HTTP too?
It's okay, it's not like most Myspace users log in to check their profile on every public computer they see.
-
Re:Username Squatters?
OpenID doesn't work like this. The user names are tied to a site. So your myspace OpenID would be something like http://myspace.com/hockeypuck. Someone else could have http://othersite.com/hockeypuck

MySpace
Amusingly, I slashdotted that MySpace logs you in via http://secure.myspace.com/ and Slashdot doesn't care to point out that MySpace likes waving around plaintext copies of the same log-in name (i.e. e-mail address) and password you use for Paypal and gMail. (You think MySpace users use a bunch of different e-mail addy's or passwords?)

Re:What the....
Bullshit. MySpace specifically forbids using the service if you give a fake age. Look it up. It's the first rule in their terms and conditions. It also prohibits use of the site for harassment, inducement to physical harm of any party.
This woman specifically suggested suicide to a minor. That's not embarrassment. That's inducement.

Re:There are arguments for his conclusion.....
Eh, I'm not so sure about that. When I set up my space, it took me less then 10 minutes to find a pre-made theme for my page (I can code, but I'm lazy, and at the time MySpace wasn't a big priority for me... not that it is now lol) that, while not PERFECT, was very readable, and doesn't tend to make the eyes bleed (I don't think...).
I think the bigger issue is most peoples taste. "OMG! It is transparent AND it blinks!!!! SUPER COOL!!!!!" That, right there, I think is the issue. I find most people I know who have a decent sense of usability/design are able to put together a decent page from pre-made themes.(not that I do, I have a poor taste for design, I'm just lucky enough to know not to make things blink, to not have light-on-light, or dark-on-dark text and a few other things of that nature).

MySpace is horribly buggy. FaceBook Isn'tI have both a MySpace page and a FaceBook page to promote my music. It just takes a glance to distinguish the clean, tasteful design of FaceBook from the garish, ad-ridden MySpace.
I've had no end of trouble with MySpace. I'm not able to prevent my music from playing when you load my page, even though that's how I set it in my profile. I've always allowed downloads of my MP3s, but at some point they stopped being downloadable. I had to delete them all and re-upload them to get the downloads back.
I have actually found MySpace pages that had been customized in such a way as to make FireFox crash just by loading the page!
My only complaint about FaceBook is that it doesn't allow for downloading MP3s - but that's a lack of a desired feature, and not an actual bug.
Most young people these days are trying out both. I don't think it takes much time for them all to figure out which one is better.

Stratospheric
The Indie Alt-Rock group "Kiosk" did something similar with the music video for "Stratospheric". It includes CCTV video of the band on the street, edited together with video surveillance of criminals in the act.

No connection to the band. In fact I think the music sucks... Still, they simply don't have as good of a PR guy working for them. -

Re:Cyberpunk
In general I agree with your observations.
Only quibble is how far back "cyberpunk" goes, any grandfather is certainly older than Max Headroom. Check out Larry McCaffery's anthology "Storming the Reality Studio" and its Cyberpunk 101: A Schematic Guide. It starts with 1818's Frankenstein and goes up from there. Viewable at Google Book Search:
http://books.google.com/books?id=qcd-pFFEtHIC&dq=storming+the+reality+studio&pg=PP1&ots=M6Iri6TXg6&sig=PV88FEsDxjZROKv_Xl9yQJv5vdw&hl=en&prev=http://www.google.com/search%3Fhl%3Den%26q%3Dstorming%2Bthe%2Breality%2Bstudio&sa=X&oi=print&ct=title&cad=one-book-with-thumbnail
P.S. This is on my mind because I just recently finished Burrough's "The Soft Machine" from 1961 which is also listed as a grandfather of cyberpunk, and provides the name to that anthology:

Re:I really hope she wins this
Hi. I copied a few tracks by Pendulum from a friend's laptop(most notably Slam). Based on what I heard, I bought Hold Your Colour the next time I was in a record store, as well as tickets to their next concert in Sydney. It's some of the best drum and bass I've ever heard, the album artwork is stunning, I like having it sitting on my shelf, and the price was reasonable thanks to the record store in question having a sale at the time.
I also paid for Saul William's latest album after downloading his earlier works. I'll happily buy those too if I find a local store stocking them, but given his attitude to the industry I doubt he minds all that much either way. I'll definitely be purchasing tickets to any live show of his that I can attend.
Then there's one of my new favourite psytrance outfits, ITP, who've just released their latest album as a free download on its first birthday. I'll be buying the next one, sight unseen, I know it's going to be amazing. If you're into the genre, then check them out.
So yeah, I download music. I download movies. I buy CDs. I buy DVDs. More and more often, one of those actions will arise from another, and whilst the former two result largely from curiosity, the latter two now result only from quality.
That's my take, anyhow. I doubt I'm the only one. -
Redundant.
Why did they go through all that trouble? They could have simply redirected 'em to Myspace.

Re:Obligatory
So, would it make any difference if Apple renamed their app as "Apple Software Installer" rather than "software update"?
I would say yes.
I came late to this discussion today; I'm off visiting some folks and not spending all of my time at a computer. ;) But I saw this earlier this week and posted on my MySpace about it. I also submitted it as a story when I noticed it getting wider media traction. Kinda glad my submission didn't get chosen because this version (with a Mozilla exec involved) is "fuller".
An Updater should by default only update my existing software. It should not by default install new software, particularly software I don't want or need.
It's less of a problem these days but can you remember a time when hard drive performance would dip seriously if you had a lot of stuff cluttering it? Even if that stuff was never running? So why then would I want an "update utility" to add clutter? -

Why throw cats when you can swing hop vines?
But do the other vanity brew owners have something from Jamie Flood at Ninkasi (Under Construction site)? It's like having a beer from Craig Nichols, Christian Etinger, John Harris or John Meier.
If one fourth of Steve Novick's decisions are as well placed as his brew selections he'll be a top notch senator.

Re:I say this with the utmost respect
The truth is somewhere in between. Being a sound tech, like being a musician, is about 80% talent and maybe 20% mastery of technical skills. This is why so many indie bands are huge, and sound so great, right now. The technology has allowed the artists to mix their own music. They know what they want it to sound like, and they can create that sound themselves. Many of the professional production techs seem to only know how to create music that the suits and the radio stations want to hear. This does not equal good music.
A great example is the formerly independent band Single File. They signed to a label and went into a studio with some hot shot producer. Their song Zombies Ate My Neighbors was a great song, good dynamics, an awesome bridge in the middle that really worked for the song. It could have used some polish, but the overall sound was great and got a lot of local air play. They re-recorded it, and the new version sounds contrived and lost much of it's original appeal. Nothing against the band, but I just don't think the addition of a professional sound technician added much to their music.
All this goes out the window when it comes to a live gig. You can't beat a professional tech when it comes to a live show, but the gp is right about studio work. If you have the ear for the music technology makes it easy to mix some great tunes. -

Disintermediating the StudiosThere has been some movement in that direction. For example, screenwriter John August recently decided to start shooting a "short-film-slash-web-pilot" on DV. Here's how he explained his decision to take production into his own hands:
The message from writers to the studios had been, "Come back, baby. We can work this out." But after the second time negotiations fell apart, the message became, "Maybe we should see other people."
And then there's StrikeTV. As StrikeTV's MySpace puts it:
I decided to start seeing other people. It's an online "channel" featuring original video shows created by working professionals in the TV and Film Industry. These shows are self-funded and owned by their creators. Funds raised by ad revenue will go toward the Writers Guild Foundation Industry Support Fund, assisting non-WGA members, including IATSE and Teamsters affected by the strike. Strike TV videos will not be about the strike. This is a chance for writers to do what they do best - be original and tell stories.
Of course, the fact that StrikeTV's web presence is a MySpace page demonstrates that technical expertise and writing ability don't always go hand in hand. I think there will always be room for middlemen with business and technical knowledge, but I don't think the studios will ever regain the stranglehold they had on the market a decade or two ago. -
Re:No, this is a good thing
Well, the only radio station that played our music is commercial free, but otherwise your points are valid. And yes, I see room between your tiers 0 and 1. Maybe my hangup about the whole thing was the way the original Qtrax articles were written. It seemed that they perceived music solely as a means to get people to view their online ads. But you're right - most media that would be willing to play/stream our music needs to generate revenue somehow.
Nevertheless, from what I've seen, I still don't like Qtrax. One major problem is that I couldn't find a way to upload my band's music. Another problem is that I don't see any specifics on how much the artists are getting compensated.
On the other hand, I just registered my band on last.fm (actual music is forthcoming). It's a much better model in that the artist has more control over what can be streamed, downloaded, etc. Still no specifics on compensation, but I suppose we'll find out.
Anyway, thanks for the input. If you're interested in my band, check out our Web Site or MySpace Site (which is a little more up to date). Our first CD is still available on CDBaby, but we're working on breaking up the 39 minute opus into more reasonable, downloadable chunks. -

Re:Anyone know what the vulnerability was?
I had an exploit that worked when i last checked it a couple days ago, and now does not. There is a flash photoslideshow app that will display the pics of any myspace UID you feed it, or it used to. The user id I have provided used to go to a hot asian girl's naughty pictures, but they no longer display. I merely changed the 8-digit number in the url to get the pictures off of anyone's myspace, private or not. Now it seems to work for public myspaces, but not private.
