Error 504 (slashdotted) coral cache link
Wish I could add more to the discussion, but the site is slashdotted, so here's the coral cache link.
When I get back from my meeting, I might think of something more useful to say. -
Re:on with the slashdot mantra
Its important to cache, so you can find jems like http://it.slashdot.org.nyud.net:8080/comments.pl?

Coral cache link
Site is Slashdotted, use the Coral cache of it.
Even that is rather slow .. perhaps story submitters could be asked to select which of their links are dynamically-driven, and the rest should be automatically Coralized? -
Cached Link of Graph
If the "money graph" loads slowly, I had better luck with the Coral Cached version:

Comfort games
All of my comfort games are oldies.
1. Duke Nukem (the old one, not DN2 or 3D)
This is by far the one I reach for most often as a "wind down at the end of a long day" game.
2. Trolls and Tribulations
This is my all-time favorite Commodore 64 game. I played it so much back in 1984 that it started infiltrating my dreams. I even dreamed up and played through several entirely plausible new levels, and was quite dismayed when I discovered that these didn't actually exist. I stopped playing for a while because that just can't be healthy. I still play it fairly often on a C64 emulator.
3. Minesweeper.
Honorable mentions:
1. Wizard of Wor (standup arcade machine)
I bought one of these used from a video arcade in 1985 and had it in my livingroom for a couple of years before selling it. It was definitely my #1 "comfort game" for those two years. It might still be if I still had it. I played it so much that my finger would ache from pounding the fire button, so I modified the machine (by means of a little homebrew oscillator board) to fire continuously when the fire button was held.
2. Hocus Pocus
3. Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure
4. Commander Keen series -

Links to stories botched and slashdotted
I don't know what happened to the news-story link, I know it was there when I submitted it. Anyhow, Google News has many more stories to choose from.
The Improbable Results site I linked is very slow due to media attention. I'm sure Slashdot didn't help :).
Here's a Coral Cache version of the Improbable Results website and the list of present and past winners.
If Coral doesn't work, here's a MirrorDot version of the Improbable Results main page. -

Yup, it sure is an attack
Disabling and blinding are forms of attack. A quick martial arts hint, always attack your opponent's weaknesses, in terms of the human body that means the eyes, throat and groin. The Chinese are now attacking two of the three, they're attacking the eyes through the satellites and also the US economy through the exchange rate.
It's a fascinating war to watch, especially considering that the US doesn't even realise it's at war and has been for decades.

It's Probably a Valid ConcernFrom an industry report I found sometime ago on Slashdot:
Among the small wonders produced by nanotechnology are carbon nanotubes, an advanced material as strong as diamond. These amazing carbon cylinders possess 100 times the tensile strength of steel and are 10,000 times finer than human hair. They are believed to conduct heat better than any other material, and they can also conduct electricity or function as semiconductors.
But this LiftPort PDF states:
"Nanotubes are astonishingly promising, and I'm a realist, not an optimist," says Rod Ruoff, a mechanical engineering professor at Northwestern University. "It's a question of making the technology cheap enough." In 2001, only 3 kilograms of the highest quality carbon nanotubes--the single-walled variety--were produced worldwide, each gram worth $300, or 30 times as expensive as gold.
Now, full-scale production of carbon nanotubes is underway at the world's first ever large-scale nanotube factory, built outside Tokyo by the Carbon Nanotech Research Institute, a subsidiary of Japan's Mitsui & Co. The new facility is expected to churn out 10 tons of carbon nanotubes--albeit the lesser quality multi-walled type--a month, and CNRI anticipates the price will be a much more reasonable $80 a kilogram.
These multi-walled carbon nanotubes may not possess all the impressive properties of their single-walled brethren, but mixed with plastics, they make ultrastrong composites or microscale precision parts. Such carbon nanotube-filled plastics are already being used by automakers in fuel lines because they are conductive and can thus be grounded to release static electricity, which can ignite flammable gasoline. One issue brought up is the possibility of discharging the ionosphere. Our calculations based on the size and conductivity of the ribbon and the electrical properties exhibited in our upper atmosphere illustrate that a small area (square meters) around the ribbon could become discharged in the worst conditions. The magnitude of this discharging makes us believe with high confidence that no adverse local or global phenomenon will occur. It also shows that it is unlikely, without considerable effort, that any kind of usable power may be generated by this same method.
I think your concern is valid though for conduction through the ionoshpere or even on the surface of the nano tube/wire -- what would this huge antenna/conducter do to our atmosphere (if anything)? -

Pimping Oneself
Although it's the most obvious use for this sort of system, Wikipedia isn't the only place it would be useful. Indeed it's a shame this sort of ability isn't included as standard in most browsers - think checking accuracy of news sites and technical documentation.
While accuracy is more relative outside of areas of testable fact (science, one would hope) it is still possible to give good indications of the "confidence" a reader can have in a particular source. It's "the boy who cried wolf" as algorithm: Repeated inaccuracies, frequent changes or bias do not preclude an individual from inspired and balanced reporting, but they do reduce the likelihood. Monkeys can write Shakespeare, just not very often.
I've been working on something similar as a Firefox plugin, allowing citation attributes to be added as additional markup in text. The biggest challenges are implementing a system which provides easily recognisable metadata without harming readability of text or clashing with existing standards. I'd be interested to hear of other systems, solutions & problems...

Re:Sodium metalCoral Cache link -- I love the Slashdotter FireFox extension! (And kudos to Theodore Gray for a really nice poster.)
As long as I'm posting, I'm reminded of the article I read recently about how some public school was so poorly funded that their periodic table was from 1996 and didn't have the very newest element! Whatever the financial situation in the school, I found it at least as alarming that "activists" thought that was seriously holding back high school chemistry education, let alone that a reporter and editor (WSJ, no less, IIRC) agreed with them.

Re:Cool hack, but who cares...
Whoops! I guess the link worked for me in the comment preview because my browser cached it... but apparently the server looks for slashdot traffic and redirects it to coral cache. Two solutions: First, since the URL got mangled somewhere when the caching happened here is the real cache link: http://cowifi.personalwireless.org.nyud.net:8080/
s howthread.php?t=11 (note: it missed the showthread.php, actualy it missed the slash after 8080 but that isn't too important anymore.) The second solution is to just take the link and copy it directly into a new window so it doesn't see you are coming from Slashdot. Here is the link again: http://cowifi.personalwireless.org/showthread.php? t=11 -
Re:Cool hack, but who cares...

You want peak broadband internet speed, do this...
Get a linux box, configure it as a firewall.
Add the following rules to the end of your firewall script.
NOTE: The Lameness filter sucks so get text here instead of just reading the script:http://whiterc.com.nyud.net:8080/just_shapi ng.txt
The whole firewall script is here: http://whiterc.com.nyud.net:8080/rc.firewall.txt
The most important elements are the 1:10 rules that make sure that your TCP acknowledgements have the highest classification; and the udp rules that will let your VoIP and games (and Bittorrent 8-) have precidence.
Now, use the script below to set up your simple 6-tier traffic shapping output. MAKE SURE to set INTERFACE_SPEED= value to your _ACTUAL_ _UPLINK_ rate in kbps. I have fast cable, so I have 768. Default comcast rate is 384 in my area if you don't pay the $10 a month. If you have [A]DSL set the speed the link is _supposed_ to be. Don't hedge, the hedging is already in the math. [Tweak the weight array if you want to change the reservation ratios.]
NOTE: The Lameness filter sucks so get text here instead of just reading the script:http://whiterc.com.nyud.net:8080/rc.shaper. txt
What is the magic? TCP/IP speeds up additively but slows down exponentally. So to get fast _downstream_ data flow, you have to make sure that your _upstream_ packet acknowledgement events get through. It is really easy to overrun the buffers built into your cable modem (etc) while receiving a large/fast stream.
Speed tests from reasonably local speed testing website regularly give me between 90% and 98% of my purchased download speed in actual single-stream performance. I can also game while my roomates browse the internet without incurring nasty lag.
Note that I have tweaked the math to a nonce for my link, but if you want to play with fine tuning then look at tweaking the numerators in the declare statements for CEILING and BURST_CELING. That's why the "* 98 / 100" and "* 100 / 100" parts are there... 8-)
Really, the above makes _ALL_ the difference in my effective internet speed. -
