Better Languages
This seems like a good thread to plug my essay Better Languages for Better Software (again). In a nutshell: many (probably the vast majority) of bugs that are found in software nowadays can be entirely eliminated by using safer programming languages. As an added bonus, these languages are often more concise than languages in popular use today, which means more productivity and/or time to fix bugs.

Re:No way
Paramount needs to put the crack pipe down and get those seasons in the $49-$59 range.
EXACTLY!
I am so tired of these morons trying to suck every penny from the franchise as they possibly can while ignoring simple facts. The truth is, if they cut the price in half, they would likely sell more than double what they are now. It has nothing to do with production or advertisement, it's all the greedy bastards at Paramount. X-Files was the same way until just recently when they dropped the price (at least at my local Costco) from $100/season to $40. Stargate SG-1 (owned by MGM) seasons have been $35-40 since they were first released, and they are already committed to 10 seasons. Hell, Enterprise is only 4 seasons and it's still over $100/season. Why can't others follow MGM's suit?
The truth is that the people behind the Star Trek franchise are complete and utter fools. They embrace such asinine marketing such as this. They continue to allow the failures known as Berman and Braga to rape the franchise. They blame poor box office ratings for Nemesis on the fans and other big-name movies and not piss-poor writing and directing . They blame the failure of Enterprise on the fans and not piss-poor writing and directing.
In reality it's probably a good thing the franchise is "resting". You can only screw something up so long before people give up on it. Hopefully when they try resurrecting it they'll have found people to produce it with something called talent. -
Curiously...
Today I watched a TV show on hackers. How the hacker culture formed, from the phone interventions to the computer makers. One thing that called my attention was Bill Gates' letter to the homebrew computer club, saying:
"As the majority of hobbyists must be aware, most of you steal your software. Hardware must be paid for, but software is something to share. Who cares if the people who worked on it get paid?"
It's so funny, isn't it? At the beginning, Bill Gates complained about people sharing "his" software. But now, people sharing FREE software (Linux, OpenOffice) is what's ruining his business.
Oh the irony.... -
A much safer version

Yikes!
For those who read TFA... did you notice that the Time Magazine shown in #10 has Bill Gates behind the 360 resembling the all-famous Borg image? *shudder*
In any case, I'd rather have bill gates selling a famous videogame console rather than forcing a crappy operating system down our throats. -
Re:textbooksTextbooks are such a gouge. I for one believe strongly in the power of the free market economy, so I guess they're not that big of a gouge if people keep buying them.
If there was ever an example illustrating how little free market there is for certain items, textbooks are one of them. It is a mandatory compelled purchase. On campus/off campus bookstores typically 'compete' with books at the same fixed prices.
Here is interesting study about why textbooks are so expensive: http://calpirg.org.nyud.net:8090/reports/textbook

No kidding! Looking at the screenshot it's an even more astounding claim. This Gorm is simply an interface designer that looks like a steaming pile when compared with the likes of QT Designer.

Re:hideousYour problem is that you didn't take a look at its permutations. I think that is what makes this logo so cool! The author took into consideration the many ways a logo can be displayed - on t-shirts, boxes, CD, etc.; in different colors (see postcard in the above link), representing different topics (see the secure logo), and so on.
In other words, what makes this logo great is its adaptability - it remains easily recognizable while suitable for a range of products (be it advocacy products like tshirts or postcards, or books and CDs). Oh yes, and don't confuse this logo with beastie btw - beastie remains the mascot of the FreeBSD project, while this is their new logo.

Re:You could also..
The CoralCDN ( http://www.coralcdn.org.nyud.net:8090/ or http://www.coralcdn.org/ ) is another way around this. China hosts CDN nodes, and it would be a lot of work for them to block access to ~any~ content worldwide if they allow the CoralCDN to exist at all. Considering they allow it to run on nodes in their country as part of PlanetLab, they'd have to choose to cut off PlanetLab entirely or maybe put up specific filters in front of PlanetLab. I strongly urge the Chinese to use Coral for browsing sites that are may be on the government radar. It's not anonymity, it's simply forcing the government to work even harder (grin)

CS dept fine, ES dept not
Just a correction on the news item: the actual CS department was unharmed, and CS students are unlikely to be directly affected at all. According to an interview with the admin Chris Gutteridge on Surge FM (Coral) (the Uni radio), all students files and documents are safe and were backed up. The internal intranet and internet connectivity is still up, although a couple of servers have been cut off. It is electronics students and researchers who have lost out here.
For those that aren't aware, Soton has a combined electronics and computer science facility. Electronics in Mountbatten, and CS in the attached Zepler building. Only Mountbatten was affected, and Zepler recieved only minor smoke and heat damage. This is remarkable as Mountbatten has been entirely gutted due to the explosions, whereas Zepler appears to be otherwise perfectly fine.
Mountbatten did have a modern sprinkler system, quite why it failed and why the fire escalated will be investigate in the next few days. There are also concerns over the lack of information about chemicals stored there, which prevented fire crews from stopping the fire earlier. -

You need to make sure that little drop down menu says "Plain Old Text"
That's the only way /. will leave your paragraph's intact. Otherwise you have to insert markupFire at Highfield campus
Coralized Link To Article
A major fire today at the University's Highfield Campus has partially destroyed the Mountbatten Building, in particular the area containing the microfabrication facility. Very fortunately, as far as can be ascertained, no one was injured or is missing as a result of the fire.
Apart from some minor smoke damage to adjacent buildings no other University buildings have been affected and staff and students are asked to return to work as normal on Monday morning.
Undergraduate teaching at the University is expected to take place as usual on Monday and students should arrive for lectures at the normal time.
Staff and postgraduate students who would normally work in the Mountbatten Building and those who work in the Zepler building are asked to attend a meeting at the Turner Sims Concert Hall at 10.30am, for a briefing on the latest situation and to hear about the University's contingency plans.
The Mountbatten Building houses research laboratories and offices for the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) and the School of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS). The University, ECS and the ORC will do all that is possible to support staff and students affected by this serious fire.
The emergency services were alerted to the fire when the alarms were activated at 6.30am Sunday, and the fire was under control by mid-afternoon. Based on available information there was nothing in the smoke plume that would pose a significant risk to health beyond that of the normal constituents of any other building fire. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Local people were advised to avoid making unnecessary journeys in the vicinity and to avoid contact with the smoke plume. Those who are vulnerable or had an existing medical condition were asked to take particular care.
The University's Secretary and Registrar John Lauwerys commented: 'This is a huge loss to the University and the fire has destroyed one of our key research facilities of international importance, supporting groups in both Electronics and Computer Science and the Optoelectronics Research Centre.
'It is a huge relief that no one has been injured as a result of the fire and our concern now is to ensure that staff and students that normally work in the Mountbatten Building are given every help to re-establish their academic work.
'The University is very appreciative of the professionalism and skill of all the emergency services, who responded so quickly and effectively, preventing the fire spreading to adjacent buildings.
'It is not yet safe to enter the Mountbatten Building, so we do not yet know the extent of the loss in terms of people's research material. It is likely to be a few days before this can be fully established,' he added. -
Re:First to defend Gene Roddenberry
There actually is a shot somewhere early in the series with a man wearing one of those skirts.
You can see it here.
Yeah, I think I'm glad they dumped those. What's too bad is they never refer to them later in the series. Why not take a jab at themselves for a laugh? For example when Riker makes a comment to Picard about how he hates the dress uniform, Picard could reply that, "at least he didn't have to wear those awful skirts." -

I know this is real offtopic
and I'll cheerfully take the mod hit if someone can answer this for me. Is this true of UK cops?
*If police fear there might be serious violence in a particular area they can stop and search anyone in that area for up to 24 hours. In these circumstances the police do not need co have a reasonable suspicion that you are carrying a weapon or committing a crime. This very wide power can be used at raves, demonstrations etc.*

Tiny quibble with the review
One small , perhaps insignificant problem with the review.
It goes in-depth with all the features of the phone rather well, it does however miss one thing.
How good is it as an actual phone?
What does it sound like when making a call?
Is the antenna any use?
How is the microphone?
This is something rather important to me when buying a phone.. being that it is the primary purpose of the thing.
Good review of all the features though, I won't touch this phone with a barge-pole if the review is correct (and the price tag so inordinate ).
PS: I took the liberty of coral caching the site , it was taking a while to load pages when I was reading the review http://www.cooltechzone.com.nyud.net:8090/index.ph p?option=content&task=view&id=1915 -

Semantic Web, anybody?
Look at some of these screenshots: http://www.seweso.com.nyud.net:8090/blog/
Specifically, the second one down, where it says "Attributes are name-value pairs that describe your item" and gives examples like "Author: Ernest Hemmingway and Area: 400 Square km".
Does this remind anybody of the Resource Description Framework? Maybe they're trying to start creating the Semantic Web, perhaps? Long talked about, but not, thus far, actually done? Maybe using something clever like OWL to search it and otherwise organize this metadata of all sorts of submitted things?
Just a theory, of course. -

Re:Been waiting, LG3D has been influential though
Widgets might not be the only Apple product to be inspired by Sun's Looking Glass project.
This screenshot from the Sun website seems very similar to the UI for Apple's new Front Row application that comes bundled with the new iMacs. I recall seeing an animation of this during a demonstration of Looking glass, and I believe the CDs moved in the same "circular 3D plane" motion that Front Row's application icons move in when you are toggling between applications.
