Classic misdirection
This reminds me of NSA's SELinux, a ploy to get everybody to pass over an OS built with security foremost in mind (like OpenBSD) and rush instead into one for which the NSA no doubt has hundreds if not thousands of pre-programmed exploits.
I'll bet you that's where half of their supercomputer time goes. Iterating across the domain of all possible inputs against Windows and stock Linux distributions, looking for all the holes.
How does DARPA game Sardonix? By controlling the rankings and emphasizing simple or known security holes while concealing or obscuring those for which federal exploits stand at the ready.
It would be a great idea, but only if somebody else was running it. -
Re:Misleading/slanderous headlineThis is a ridiculous bid for attention and nonsense demonizing on the part of Amnesty International.
People needs to be able to make a distinction between by a producer making a product that might be abused, and a producer that tailor a product for human right violations.
I do not claim that Microsoft does that, but bear in mind that Microsoft is a champion of DRM (under various names) to control and monitor users. So I would not put it past them to do what Amnesty International suspect them of doing.
DRM is all about producer control using private keys that you, the user, has no access to. Contrast this to Cryptography where strong cryptography can be used to ensure your privacy and that you are in control.

One thing we can't outsource...
How can people say BSD is dying when it has a mascot like this?! Linux needs to get its act together if it's going to compete with the kind of hot chicks and gorgeous babes that BSD has to offer!
You just can't take Linux seriously when its fronted by losers like these. Would you buy software from them? I don't think so! You Linux groupies need to find some sexy girls like her! I mean just look at this girl! Doesn't she excite you? I know this little hottie puts me in need of a cold shower! This guy looks like he is about to cream his pants standing next to such a fox. As you can see, no man can resist this sexy little minx. I mean are you telling me you wouldn't like to get your hands on this ass?!
With sexy chicks like the lovely Ceren you could have people queuing up to buy open source products. Could you really refuse to buy a copy of BSD if she told you to? Come on, you must admit she is better than an overweight penguin or a gay looking goat! Don't you wish you could get one of these? Personally I know I would give my right arm to get this close to such a divine beauty!

Re:Change domain
Maybe theyll change their domain name like M$ did to bastards.sco.com instead of sco.com/bastards
Windows Update exists at windowsupdate.com and v4.update.microsoft.com or similar. The dDOS was just aimed at the first one, whilst all links (web and local) to Windows Update point at the other one. The attack was therefore not hugely disruptive, especially once a nice layer of properly hardened computers was in the way.
According to NetCraft, SCO is currently pinging at about the 16 second mark - are there really that many computers with fast clocks, or is it bad coding, or is something else happening here? Feb 1st is supposed to mark the start of the GET storm.

Ditch Windows; get WindowMaker
After switching to Linux six years ago and spending a lot of time trying to navigate Gnome's menus to find what I was looking, a friend told me about WindowMaker. I edit the menus to weed out the cruft, include things that take a lot of keystrokes to launch, and open terminals to do my other work. If I need something that I didn't put in a menu, I have a command prompt to launch it. No muss, no fuss. This, of course requires a real OS.

Re:Does everyone know about GNU/KFreeBSD?So, the OpenBSD guys are wasting their time rewriting software that already exists in a free form, and you're questioning the benefit of the GNU/KFreeBSD project?
The point is : They don't see GPL as free enough. And since OpenBSD, like other BSD, is not just a kernel, they have to care about licenses for all program shipped with their OS. Go check OpenBSD Copyright Policy

Ultra 5's are underrated[magnus@bluegill magnus]$ uptime
1:18pm up 124 days, 20:14, 2 users, load average: 0.08, 0.02, 0.01
A lot of Sun lemmings here will diss the Ultra 5 because it is one of the most PC-like Suns you'll ever find. I picked up one a few years ago for $300. 333MHz processor (2MB cache), 256MB RAM, etc. First thing I did was rip out the 9GB HDD and replace with a 40GB model. This alone did much to eliminate the performance bottlenecks this model is prone to. I could just as easily have put in a 9GB SCSI drive and controller I had around but the capacity was more important at the time.
Originally it ran OpenBSD, which works pretty well on this hardware. I needed some modern conveniences like PAM and NSS so I upgraded to Aurora Linux. I'm still running Aurora on that box now, and as my uptime posted up there will attest it is a stable box. The last time it was booted was when I re-racked the server on some new industrial shelving I got at home.
I'm very happy with it. Right now it has a few primary uses:
- File Server - Running NFS and Samba, my home directories and other shared files can be reached from any computer in the house (current count a little over 2 dozen).
- Squid - I have all my web browsers using this machine as a proxy server.
- syslog - All my *NIX boxen send copies of their syslog events here.
- DHCP/DNS/NTP - These services could probably run on a pocket calculator, or maybe my old VAX, but the Ultra 5 is seriously underworked.
I have quite a few Sun and other oddball machines. I manage quite a few Sun & Linux boxen at $WORK. I rather like my lowly Ultra 5 and think that it deserves more credit than it has been given to date. -
Re:Problem is using RBLs not just as advisory
A good idea is to add RBLs to e.g. spamassasin and assign them a +2 score.
I use SPEWS level 1 (and some country blacklists) on an OpenBSD firewall which redirects to spamd based on the rules. The problem with spamassassin is that it process the mail after it has come into your system and used up your resources. On a large mail system this can be quite costly. -

Re:QuestionOpenBSD is probably as slow as you can go. Their goal is not ultimate desktop performance, it's security. Look for performance somewhere else until it's "secure enough".
FreeBSD has for a long time been THE STUFF for speed, but that's not quite true longer since the release of Linux 2.6.
Ports offer a great advantage if you want to build stuff with your own options, but it requires time, bandwidth and some knowledge of what you are doing. The speed difference will probably not be worth it but atleast you don't have to use all those toolkits you don't like anyway.
Philosophy? Definitly, now we are talking. If you are a developer the BSD License let you enjoy the greatness of having all the source code at your hands without having to release your own works source just because you found a nice idea or borrowed some code.
But imho the great thing with all the BSDs are documentation. Sure you have manpages in Linux, sure there are howtos, and even install guides. But with the hundreds of Linux distributions and different places and names of files and modified content of them it doesn't come close to the documentation you have in any of OpenBSD, NetBSD or FreeBSD.

Re:I use Xandros 2.0
ah..wait, they're all made in Santa Cruz, California these days....
That is some damn outdated version of their history. Their present name is just SCO, their HQ is nowadays located in Utah and their Nasdaq ID has changed from SCOC to SCOX.
The answer to your other question is that of course, there are, but as one with deep knowledge in this subject has taught me in my school, I think the distros made in Finland are far superior to those, which are not. :)
(Just kidding - actually Linus left the school about a year before I entered it, and besides my primary box (my laptop) runs Mac OS X aka BSD, although I have another box, too, which runs Linux.) -
Re:Slackware is where it's at...As of OpenBSD 3.4, Bind 9.2.2 (+ patches) is included.
It's set up like bind4 was, but you've got the bind9 named.conf file instead of named.boot
One odd thing I noticed, though, was that on my nameservers, I needed to set the debug level to 3 or higher for answer requests (and submitted a bug report about it, etc)

Licensed developers != secure
Would OSS have to be writen entirely by licensed developers to be considered secure?
I'm sure glad the DHS steps in and prevents all those 1ee7 uncontrolled hackers from creating evil unlicensed, software that aren't secure.
Why do I always picture half-drunken bar patrons reinventing the world in front of a beer when I hear about the DHS talking about things they don't have much of a clue about? -

Re:Warning !If that's true, then it's illegal for a US citizen to contribute to the 2.6.0 kernel too, since that has crypto in it.
Indeed, export of cryptographic technology from USA is hampered with strong restrictions. So many Open Source projects are quite careful to avoid breaking laws by having (much) development done outside USA, and also letting release builds be done outside US as well.
For instance, OpenBSD has offered strong encryption for several years. The OpenBSD project is located in Canada, and a lot of development/release builds are done outside US. As Integrated Crypto shows :
Hence the OpenBSD project has embedded cryptography into numerous places in the operating system. We require that the cryptographic software we use be freely available and with good licenses. We do not directly use cryptography with nasty patents. We also require that such software is from countries with useful export licenses because we do not wish to break the laws of any country. The cryptographic software components which we use currently were written in Argentina, Australia, Canada, Germany, Greece, Norway, and Sweden.
When we create OpenBSD releases or snapshots we build our release binaries in free countries to assure that the sources and binaries we provide to users are free of tainting. In the past our release binary builds have been done in Canada, Sweden, and Germany.

Re:Just what I was waiting for
Why are you convinced that a 64-bit processor will help you in any way? It won't, of course, unless it also happens to be faster in run-of-the-mill 32-bit code - which I will admin AMD's 64-bit chips sometimes are.
Speed is not the only advantage the AMD brings with the x86-64 architecture. It also has features. For example, if you run OpenBSD natively on one of these chips, you'll have something to sing about. X86-64 lets to control whether a page of memort is executable or not -- a nice protection against things like buffer-overflow attacks.People have been saddled with the x86 legacy for so long, that they have forgotten the old days, when processors distinguished themselves from one another, in ways other than price/performance.

Re:Why not interpreted C++, instead?
Suppose Larry had used his considerable brainpower to make an interpreted version of C or C++, instead of making a completely new language?
Thats simple.
You would end up getting stupid things like CSH
And from that you get: Csh Programming Considered Harmful -
She needs her own cable channel!

Re:Opteron and *BSDThe OpenBSD project isn't just working on amd64, they even wrote a song about it.
:-)Like other Barbarians before him, Puff has had to face some pretty crazy challenges.
This song is an allegory of the recent difficulties we went through dealing with Sun, who refused our request for documentation about their UltraSPARC III processors. We want documentation, because these are the fastest processors with a per-page eXecute bit in the MMU, needed to fully support our new W^X security feature.
In the meantime, the AMD Hammer has come onto the scene, and this processor supports an eXecute bit in 64-bit mode. And it is going to be faster...

Re:Ye gods
But aside from that, why in the world would anyone with half a brain use strcat when strncat is available? Really... I'm asking. Is there actually some reason?
Or for that matter, strlcpy and strlcat? (On systems that have them. From what I know - *BSDs, OS X, and Solaris.)

Opteron and *BSDI think you'll find that FreeBSD has only made amd64 a tier-1 architecture starting with FreeBSD 5.2 which isn't out yet and has been recently delayed until January.
On the other hand, NetBSD has had amd64 support since 2001.
OpenBSD is reportedly working on it, but I haven't seen anything hit the tree as yet.

Re:trustthe only computer that i would fully trust to protect my stuff would be a gentoo linux box custom made for a specific purpose.
Why would you trust Gentoo more than OpenBSD? After all, OpenBSD is written and audited to be the most secure OS around.

Re:Metalworking for Dummies
Where are the measurements? I'm guessing you built one of these already, so how wide is the top piece, and how deep? The base is a 19" square made out of 1" on sides (sqrt(2) across hypotenuse) angle iron, mitred and welded at right angles. The rails are tack-welded to more angle iron, and these are braced triangularly with scrap bedframe iron. The rails' mounting centers are held 18.25" apart (this corresponds to a standard 19" wide rack with 0.75" between the rack-ear holes). (Double-check the numbers, I'm working from memory here.)
My bottom (and therefore the depth of the rack) is 19" square - that's 19" wide and 19" deep. I did that because it's adequate for my equipment, though it's a little tight for my old Sony VO-5600 (this one isn't mine). The rack is wide open; there are no front, side or rear panels, so the old U-Matic is free to overhang. It looks kinda like the OpenBSD rack, but a little shorter, more rugged, and a couple of Suns short of a server farm.
:)It's mounted to the floor with some large lead concrete shields and bolts.
Quick trick: when you're welding it together, bolt it loosely. Put some equipment into the rack - something heavy screwed down in the bottom and something light screwed down in the top position. Use a level to make sure the rails are at 90 degrees to the floor and 180 degrees to each other. Tighten the bolts, and then tack-weld the braces on. Take out the equipment and do a nice stitched bead. Chisel off the slag, wire brush it clean, and you're done.
If I were organized, I could probably build another simple rack like this in an afternoon.

InsecureSure, all systems have security problems. Few people get an operating system just for security, if the did, they wouldn't be using Mac os x or Windows XP they would be using openBSD
The author of that article seems to be pretty insecure himself.

OpenBSD's spamd
This sounds a lot like OpenBSD's spamd program. Check out a possible use of it like spamhole.

Re:I wrote the MD5 based crypt() for a reason...
For those interested in the gory details, A Future-Adaptable Password Scheme by Neils Provos and David Mazieres goes into great detail about the approach taken with OpenBSD. I don't know about the others out there today but one of the nice things with this approach is that the number of rounds can be increased as processors become faster. On each machine one can choose how much processing time should be taken at a login prompt essentially.

Re:For all of you who will say "This won't work"
Well, here's what I've done and it hasn't gotten me on any black lists for running an open relay because I don't.
First, my mailserver runs OpenBSD, this allows me to use pf for my port filtering software. Then each user on the server has a copy of CRM114 installed. This is a very powerful and extremely accurate bayesian classifier. I've gotten 1 piece of spam in the last three months, 0 false positives and it blocks about 150 pieces of spam a day (for my account alone).
For each piece of mail that I receive, the relays involved are entered into relaydb. This wonderful little program logs each mail relay listed in the message. When a relay has 3 times as many bad messages as good messages it is added to the black list. Because I'm using pf, this blacklist is updated in real time to the mail server's pf configuration, which causes spamming hosts to be sent to the tar pits.
I'd estimate the total accuracy rate (defined as non-Type I and non-Type II errors) to be somewhere around 99.95%. User interaction is zero for most of the time, I've got a nice corpus that I train the accounts with. On the off hand that there is an error the user mails the message to themselves and it gets fixed.
So, to summarize:
This idea won't work, you'll get your host marked as an open relay.
This is what I did to kill spam and it does work. -
