Re:What popups
I did that but it removes all the cr/lfs from the file. But what do you know it works fine here. Some of mine are redundant but it seems two work pretty well for me. YMMV

Microsoft Ad in the Midst of this
An aside, not totally off-topic.
Context sensitivity for ads on Slashdot are not the best. This ad for Visual Web Developer 2005 came up as I opened this.
Considering the article is oriented towards ditching Windows in favour of Macs, why advertise a Windows-based development tool?
At any rate, I went from Windows to Linux, so I didn't have to change hardware. I'm happy, and Windows is relegated to a virtual machine for a few games, which, IMHO, is about the security level its worth.

Completely Offtopic
Did anyone else see the stupid Microsoft Visual Web Developer Express Edition Ad?
God, that's by far the cockiest ad I've *ever* seen on Slashdot. How could someone even come up with stuff like that? Sheesh! -

Re:But will it translate into a worthwhile product
Some of his *writing* is downright scary (EG, his infamous homophobic screed).
Despite the "infamous" status, I'd never heard of this screed. So I looked it up.
And you know, it just sounds like a reasonable opinion, and contains much sound advice. Sorry you haven't had the opportunity (yet) to raise children, and watch them blossom with positive role models of father and mother.
It's not homophobic to see that this is so, any more than it's racist to acknowledge that white-skinned people need more sunscreen on the beach. Marriage, as an institution, is an acknowledgement of this fact. As mature adults, we either acknowledge this, or pay the price with dysfunctional families and neurotic offspring.
I'm not advocating that we burn homosexuals. My heart truly goes out to a homosexual partner who is unable to accompany his partner through death, or who loses legal rights to property thereafter. I support efforts to address these wrongs.
But, by definition, a homosexual cannot "marry" a same-sex partner, any more than a bicycle can defecate. -

Re:The question is...
Is their web site powered by Syllable?
No, it's hosted by sourceforge (another osdn site)
Does this mean that slashdot has just slashdotted itself? -

Agreed, you truly have to wonder about a slopped together perl and the ineptness of a "professional" news service when this 503 crap is going on.

Re:Don't be afraid of looking silly!
It was at http://www.osdn.com/personals/, but going there now just gives the title bar with a blank page. I even turned Flash on, but it's not that either. I guess the gender balance was a bit too extreme for it to work.
Just to add my two pennorth to this whole subtopic, I think that an important thing a lot of geeks (particularly younger ones) miss is that you don't have to look for a geek girlfriend. There are plenty of things to talk about other than computers; most girls don't like football either but the regular guys don't find that a problem. -
Sad
This is sad. Unfortunately, I know how you feel. This is a clear abuse of the system. You should definitely contact everyone responsible.

Re:Account wiping
Google doesn't do sucky things?
Have you read the terms of service for Gmail? This kind of policy seems to be the norm when it comes to the darling of the search engine business.
Check your computer for a cookie from Google. Yes, I know most will condemn me as a tin-foil hat wearing chicken little but Google does keep a database of all your searches using the unique identifying key in that cookie.
Catering to the usual crowd of Slashdot who hate Microsoft, Google has implemented one of the policies that Microsoft amended after a public outcry to them.
Heck Sergey Brin refused to deny that Google is willing and able to hand over the search histories of individuals to law enforcement agencies when they request it. Given the broad sweep of the Office of Homeland Security in terms of the ease of gaining subpoenas for investigating supposed acts of terror, I've found myself being very careful what I search for on Google. -

Red vs Green
My mother got a laptop which was literally covered in blue LED's... I understand they have low power consumption but I really wonder if they're not chewing up her processing power as the laptop is seriously slow!
But seriously, there was a study a long time ago showing that green taffic lights were easier to spot than red, contrary to the article which states that red lights were swapped with green ones due to the fact they were less invasive. Conflict here???
Are there any /.'ers out there with some opinions to be shared as to whether green or red is easier to spot?
Why do I care?
These sort of results matter for a whole range of issues, mainly for grabbing attention --- ala advertising (especially the one at the top right now which seems to use a lot of red in it to grab attention - but I hadn't noticed for quite some time. The default garbage green that slashdot uses seems to work better!).
But honestly those purple lights modders use on their cases stand out a lot more imho. And they look wicked! -
Re:The best ads
Basically I was specifically looking to buy what I was searching for, and the links on the right provide an easy way to find stuff. It is a lot easier to sell me stuff when I am actually looking to buy it in the first place. The last time I can remember was when I bought a 9-in-1 SD/xD/CompactFlash/etc. drive for my computer. The important point to remember here is that I was actually looking for a place to buy it, not just randomly surfing.
In general, I think a lot of the advertising has it completely wrong. For example: as I write this comment there is this ad running on the top of the page. Am I worried about SCO? No, I use FreeBSD, and its legal problems were worked out about a decade ago. Am I looking for a server? No. Am I more inclined to use GlobalServers should that change? No. Did I even look at the ad until I decided to use it as an example for this post? No. I would call that a waste of money, but it could have been worse: at least they were actually marketing a product of some sort. It could have been an "image building" ad.
If I was in need of a server and if I actually happened to notice the ad and if I didn't find it offensive in some way, I might click on the link, and after that I might actually become a customer. Those are long odds.

I love context sensitive adsSuch as this image prominently present right here.
If this isn't a warning, what else is?

Synopsis of the issue
Copyright is now automatic and mandatory. You, as the creator of a work, cannot voluntarily put it into the public domain. All that you can do is to license it with the most open and explicit license that you can think of. See Slashdot's Terms and Conditions for an example of a licensing scheme that you've agreed to, whether you know it or not. Saying "this work is in the public domain" is not sufficient, as "public domain" has no meaning in law except for works for which copyright has expired.
If you think this isn't an issue, consider what happens if you unrestrictively license a body of work, and then step in front of a bus. The copyrights pass to your estate, and for the sake of argument, we'll say that's an Evil Nephew. Now, how sure are you that your license is "irrevocable and in perpetuity"? Are you absolutely sure that it's water-tight? Can the Evil Nephew revoke the license? Can he prevent people who currently have copies from making futher copies and passing them on?
It gets even worse where the intent and licensing is unclear. If a work doesn't bear a copyright claim, a clear license, or other identifying information, how do you even know whether you're allowed to copy it? The creator, or his Evil Nephew, could turn up any day and sue you for reproducing their work. It's safer not to duplicate and distribute at all, and that is very much not what copyright law was intended to do. It was intended to encourage dissemination of work. Implicit mandatory copyrights creates a culture that strangles the public domain.
The core of Kahle vs Ashcroft is that copyrights should be something that you actively choose to claim. If you don't, for example, care what happens to your Slashdot postings, just don't put "(C) 2003 $YOUR_NAME" on them. It's pretty much as simple as that.

That is the flag image. It appeared a few times at the very top of the page, centered above the banner ad. I have no idea what it is about.

I instantly believe you! This article is indeed sobering news! I'm going to immediately cut a check-- Wait a minute...this ad at the top of Slashdot's page is telling me that Linux isn't worth a hill of beans compared to Windows anyway, so why should I pay SCO a dime when I can just ditch linux and go MS?
I've heard about this "TCO" thing once or twice and-- Holy crap, the graph in that ad moves!

OT: Re:unsupported? This post is copyright (c) 2004 by Jakub Friedl under the GNU General Public License (GPL).
This is a nonsensicval comment. The post is copyright because you wrote it and it's not a copy of any other works. That arises from copyright law not the GPL.
The GPL is the licence under which you as the copyright holder allow other people to make copies of the work.
But in any case by submitting the work to
/. you subject work to the conditions applicable to posting therein. These luckily enough run along the same lines as the GPL but there may be other sites where this is not the case. -

Re:Turgid Troll, or a real deal
Dear Sir,
I will pick through the parent post and point on the trolling so that you will not humiliate yourself in front of your peers again.
That's first class for you. As you can tell, open source development pays so well, I can fly first class around the globe!
Here 'Linus' is implying that Open-Source Software development pays well. This is clearly false, as it has been well shown that only closed source software makes money.
The 2.6.1 release is a great release, a release that I'm very proud of, as I wrote it all myself.
Here 'Linus' is implying that he wrote the 2.6.1 release himself. The kernel was in fact development by the brave men and women (well, men and effeminate women) of OSDN.
You'll find it's a distinct improvement on 2.6.0, but just wait for 2.6.2! That will be even better and blow you all away.
'Linus' is now drawing attention to the fact that there are so many updates to the kernel. This is a comment on the fact that Linux Slashbots often poke fun at the regularl Windows updates and service packs, while quietly ignoring the nearly daily kernel releases and security updates for individual applications.
I can't wait to see Australia. People riding Kangaroos, those cuddly little Koalas and that Steve Irwin guy feeding babies to the crocodiles. Maybe even some sexy penguins! Here 'Linus' is giving the impression he is an idiot, with his ignorance of the reality of Australia, even including a topical swipe at the current most famous Australian, Steve Irwin.
The penguin comment implies that Linus is sexually attracted to animals which is patently untrue.
But your biggest mistake, sir, was not knowing the correct spelling of Mr. Torvalds' real name. Please make a note of the following: Linus Torvalds. Thank you.
Yours,
A Kind Soul -

Yeah, that's what I was thinking
After watching the Simpsons and the 10 minutes of commercial I get from that and coming to slashdot to waste some time geeking out and seeing an ad for "OSDN personals" (WTF, by the way...) I just got the feeling that I wasn't watching nearly enough commercials.
