Of course, once you realize that, the opportunity to rant via creative misspellings about how nobody cares about Microsoft on OSX is lost, so perhaps you should just ignore this post and carry on as you were.

Re:Interesting. The people playing MMORPG's are wealthy enough to buy a computer/rent time on a game server and have the free time to do so. I.e. the MMORPG's are not poor people living under the gun as far as meeting physical needs (food, shelter) goes. Since poverty is the #1 cause of criminal behavior, it's not suprising to see (relatively) rich people behaving in a law abiding fashion, even in an imaginary world.
This may be true, but it also seems to me that most people online tend to be younger (teenagers). These kids take advantage of the shield of anonymity to act like jerks, in accordance with John Gabriel's Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory. I think you just need to browse
/. at -1 to realize this. Where's the motivation to act like this? -
Re:Projector Bulbs
ME: It's still cheaper in some cases, but a lot of folks don't realize the life of the bulbs.
YOU: More than true. Then again, as far as I'm concerned anyone who goes and spends a grand without doing some serious research either has money to burn, or deservers whatever they get.
I agree to a point but people talking about it on Slashdot could be considered part of someone's research =)
They could also consider talking to the homeless guy that sits outside of work, but I have no control over what they consider a reliable source.
To those(hypothetical) readers doing research:
Keep the lighting of the room in mind; It is sometimes more helpful for you to spend money on blacking out windows than on the component (in reference to front projectors). You may save in projector costs what you spend on curtains. Additionally, a darker room means that ability to have bigger picture. The prj. I have has 1100 ANSI lumens, and does well with the windows open (at 10' diag.). But if you can get the room blackened, the only limitation you will find is the size of your wall. I got a good picture at 25' diag. Yes FEET(pixels as big as YOUR HEAD). But you could only see it at night.
http://www.penny-arcade.com/hookup_17.php3 That had a lot of interesting information I thought.
Rear projection TV's don't need NEARLY as much consideration for room lighting as a projector does!
Yes, but they also aren't NEARLY as big. So my point was that if one wanted to count square inches per dollar; In bright light, projectors can't make bigger screens, but in bright light no projection system does well so the LCD's and plasmas get beat on price. In a lighting controlled environment, the front projectors can easily outsize the rear projectors.
http://pics.honnecke.us/projector/IM000964.JPG.dis play.jpg
Pretty much, if a tube TV works there, so does a projection TV.
I think emphasis on the 'Pretty much' part is warrented. They may be viewable, but they do not have the brightness that a tube does in the same light. They still do better in bright environments than front projectors. If you cannot do anything to control your lighting, then a front projector will not be able to provide much of a size benefit over a rear projector, and will cost more over the long run at that. -
Re:Also...
Did you see those 'Awards' on SpikeTv? Obviously not everyone believes gamers are normal people, as that show was obviously targeted to a different demographic then this study indicates.
Penny Arcade commented on this a while ago. The situation remains unchanged. -

Perhaps even Blizzard didn't realize how popular this game was going to become. In fact, our friends at PA are complaining about this and other problems today.

Re:Locking Articles
I think the problem has more to do with two factors: passion and audience.
These are not idiots, either. Idiots are merely incompetent, not malicious. These are, as Penny Arcade would put it, "fuckheads," trying to ruin the experience or resource for everyone else.
Some of these fuckheads lie dormant in society, becoming emboldened with the anonymity of the web. Some are just awful all the time and everywhere. However they came to be fuckheads on the web is immaterial; what is material is the fact that fuckheads are naturally attracted to a crowd. The more people they can piss off or otherwise get a reaction out of, the more interested they are in causing a problem. That's why larger sites need some manner of moderation system, to supress the fuckheads from getting an audience. Wikipedia's runs through two steps, if I'm not mistaken: user correction and administrative banning. These work on the audience factor unless a flood of fuckheads streams in... but I don't think this was the sole problem on some of the troubled pre-US election articles.
Fuckheads have passions, just like normal people. Unlike normal people, fuckheads believe that everyone is not only entitled, but waiting to receive their passions. This set not only hangs around on an article, but takes up residence there until eviction. I think Wikipedia could've handled the flood of fuckheads it got, if fewer of them had been terribly passionate fuckheads. A flood of these can take down even the best of sites.(excepting those with particularly inspired moderation systems)
Wikipedia faces a particular challenge in its moderation question. On Slashdot, most of the malicious comments get caught in the net, but a few good comments do as well, or else they get passed over, and lost in a sea of mediocrity. This isn't much of a problem, though, because there are systems(distribution system of mod points, actual distribution of mod points, meta-moderation, viewing threshold, etc.) to keep the moderation system from getting too out of whack, and also because the loss of a few comments about a news story isn't important. Wikipedia needs every good voice it can get, though. It's entire raison d'etre is hosting the stuff the people who visit the site deposit. Articles there are not born great, it has only been through a mass of editing at the hands of many different editors that anything has become impressive.
It is part of the process that mistakes go in, but the only way they can come out again is through an army of editors. Wikipedia would slam shut a lot faster through the mandatory vetting of editors than through the antics of the fuckheads that choose it for their trouble. This is what makes moderating it a challenge. The way they've chosen to deal with it, however, makes Wikipedia more than just an experiment in cooperative encyclopedia creation -- it makes it an experiment in the goodness of human nature. Its survival up till now proves that its founding belief in that goodness wasn't all wrong; its continued survival will depend on just how right that belief was(or how brilliant a mod system they install) -

News flash, folks: Gates is not the devil incarnate, nor does he have some mad scheme to become the ruler of all existence. Take the tin foil off.

You do not need to be worrying about whether or not you will love your work. Before you do anything else (especially play another video game), you need to concentrate on the "writing well" aspect. I direct you to a beginner's guide.

Re:Nintendo isn't dying, their console is dying.
They have completely messed up their entire image
Among who? Teenagers and young adults that think anything without massive blood, gore, and other "mature" elements is too cutsey and embarassing for them to play? I'd almost venture that while Nintendo might be losing some money by somewhat excluding that segment, their games and design philosophy are better for it.
Don't make purple consoles, while I think nothing of it there are a lot of stupid people who didn't buy the console cause it looked 'gay'
This comes back to the maturity issue. I think Nintendo is better off without attracting customers that would think something like that.
For the umpteenth time, I think this comic is appropriate.
Everyone buys the black ones, so when you go to a store and see nothing but purple gamecube's
I'll have to take your word for it, because i've never actually seen that happen in any store i've been in for the last 2 years. Even when the platinum-colored ones were still quasi-limited, I had no trouble at all finding one the day I got mine - the first store (EB) I went to had them in stock.
but when looking at the sleek black and green Xbox
XBox....Sleek? You're joking, right?
Nintendo ALSO needs to suck it up about their "WE know what is best for the gamer" attitude. They have said that, basically, in many interviews over the recent years.
Maybe they DO know best? Millions of people enjoy their products very much, they're still a profitable company, and they're generally not going anywhere for a good long time. -

Re:And why the heck is this even news?
This isn't so much news, as something that might fit into the "stuff that matters" dept. Basically Penny Arcade blew their bandwith with a Chaity that allows people to buy games for children in the hospital.
And I suppose it's advertising for your friends. Which I do not personally think is evil. -

Re: I hear its AMAZING...
Is that the ending to the new game? It makes more sense than MGS 2's!
Then again, so does this. -
Re:The Newspost
I'm really interested in who you consider an "amazing writer". Most highly hailed authors have many levels to their work... that's why people praise it so.
Now I'm not trying to compare Tycho to Shakespeare, but try reading Hamlet and understanding every aspect of it in one go.
In my opinion, there are two kinds of great writers: Ones whom can tell a tale that you can't stop reading. This type can get away with simple write writing (that you understand immediately) because their plots and whatnot are so good. The others are ones who are simply language artists. Tycho is the sort who, as mentioned before, plays the English language like his own instument. Granted he's not always on fire, but he usually impresses me.
As for Tycho's choice of words, as he's mentioned he doesn't bother with reading thesauri... He just eats them for breakfast. -

Re:dude, bandwidth COSTS money
Yup, thats right.
The issue was actually a culmination of several things, mostly, an overworked database server. We dont have a full resolution yet, but we are working on it. Things should be speedy over the weekend, the test will be how it handles Monday.
The childs play domain is actually just a frame that points to http://www.penny-arcade.com/childsplaycharity/. Our saving grace is that the Child's Play site is just static HTML, the rest of the site is powered with PHP. -
Re:The end of the world
This is the end of times, the internet cannot be far behind! I'm going to go grab my wind up radio and get a shotgun.
Fine, but keep your mitts off my freaking beans -
Here comes a flamebait mod, but still...
... this appeared in a strip on Penny Arcade a while ago; the site is awfuly slow today and i can't find the exact link.
"I just want to talk to all the ****** out here. So, you spend real money in order to get pretend money (or items) in your online games. Then, for the privilege of spending (or using) that pretend money (or item) in a pretend world on pretend things (or trading for other pretend items), you pay more real money, every month.
What a bunch of ******* brain surgeons."
I don't have a problem with a guy selling virtual items (though it'd most certainly give him problems with the company hosting the game server), but that he has a market of people willing to buy him scares me. -
Re:Child's Play
What I think is kind of odd is that CmdrTaco does something a little out-of-the-ordinary by helping host this Cthulu Comic, but doesn't help out hosting any of the Child's Play traffic?
-
Re:dude, bandwidth COSTS money
Penny-Arcades webspace and bandwidth are donated by the folks at Homelan.
This was referenced in the past by Tycho. I assume that the bandwidth and webspace for childs play is covered under the same agreement. -

Alright. So, a couple things happened.
One, the Sony Syndrome "story" is probably over. We're fond of this as an ending place for it, but we your comic masters are mercurial and delight in misdirection. One never really knows. We promise nothing, and you should expect nothing. Nothing!
The second thing is that the Spike event sort of put me off of awards for the time being. Just as a random comment, if your 2004 awards program does not include Metroid Prime 2 or World of Warcraft, it has no authority whatsoever to coronate the king of any genre. I'm not even saying that those games need to win. I'm simply stating that the games exist and are real, news which has not reached them out there on the ragged periphery of taste and intellect. It has been our annual tradition to list the twelve most delicious games of the year here at Penny Arcade, and though the odds of us telling you our favorites are actually quite high doing it the way we've done it for the last few years really sounds awful to me. To both of us, even. So we're not going to do that.
What we are going to do is present a very short children's book concerning a celestial alignment which awakens the doom that lies dead and dreaming in R'lyeh. The first page can be found here. Ia! I'm sure you'll agree that this will be a great deal more fun for everyone involved. It goes until the 27th of December, the Monday after next. This is the cover.
Child's Play: Kiko's Child's Play Shirt is, like his other work, a stunning act of design savvy. He still has a few left in the run, if you'd like to climb aboard. We're coming up on the end of this year's drive, and I have every faith that when we incorporate the gifts from the partner sites last year's high score will be defeated, and we will enter our initials.
Please consider what the games you enjoy could mean to a young person staring down a long-term illness. If you haven't given yet, it's possible you don't know: you're entirely capable of heroism. The barrier to entry is surprisingly low.
