Re:Something like the major film studios in 30 yeaOh goodie... Does that mean they'll act like major Hollywood thugs too? Now the MPAA will have a "gamerz" counterpart to go out and attack their customers with extreme prejudice... Hell, why bother to go out and buy the game when you can live the live action game when ID or Valve send over snipers to personally take you out for having downloaded their software via P2P.

Re:New Milestone?
It's only more expensive if you factor in the cost of human life from playing certain games.

Re:This is our chance to strike back!!!!
Nintendo needs to get over the gaming is for kids only thing, but they've made and continue to make some quality games.
The people that think Nintendo only promotes "kiddie" gaming are the same ones that won't play a game because they think their friends will laugh at them, playing something with bright colors and/or bouncy music is embarassing, etc.
And yet again, this PA comic is appropriate.
I realize you're not (directly) bashing Nintendo, but this rubbish that they only target little kids needs to stop. Just because they make games without massive blood, violence, or sex does not make them any less mature or enjoyable. -

Well, as this old strip shows, they do have a template which could fill all of our needs.

Re:Stop Pretending You're A Real Company
Read the news of the day that goes along with the next comic. Tim Roberts posted this on his forum, then retraceted after a PA reader grabbed a screenshot.
"Actually, that is not what the comic portrayed. It actually meant they were upset that we wouldn't sue them and they ended with outright slander saying that I can only have an orgasm if I kill a dog.... very funny... love it... they want the publicity and traffic driven to there website like is happening to hardocp...
The Penny Arcade guys were nice enough to call us in the beginning and tell us they didn't mean any harm and would be putting us through the gaming console initiation process that all of the past consoles have gone through with the hard core techies.
Tim"
Gabe claims they've never spoken with him.

Re:why female geeks ?
It was predicted to fail because most men aren't stupid enough to pay $250 for a fucking music player. The stereo in my house didn't cost that much. I mean, for Chrissake, where the FUCK am I going to go to need 10,000 songs at my beck and call 24/7? Obligatory Penny Arcade.

Relevent Penny Arcade Comic
People always talk about how Playstation and XBox have more games than the GCN. They sure do, but have you seen those games? They are all the random, crappy, hollywood licensed, violence without gameplay, total crap games. On the GameCube you have to compete with Nintendo to sell software and so very few developers can hold a candle.
When a Nintendo game comes out for the GCN it sells zillions. When other games come out for the cube the players compare them to the Nintendo games they have and say "screw that! it isn't worth my money or time." So what you get on the cube is quality before quantity. If you stop making games for the cube your only two possible reasonings can be these
1) You're stupid
2) You can't compete with Nintendo in quality.
3rd parties can succeed on the cube *cough*soul calibur 2*cough*. Cube owners are just too smart to buy stupid generic movie based game number 3. -

2. Profit.
3. Get fined by EU.
4. Ham
I know it is offtopic and random, but that is kind of the point. -

Find passion
Seriously, find passion. If this is something you're passionate about, you'll make it work. You'll bring it into existence yourself. A lot of sites, like Slashdot to E2 to Fark to Neowin to Penny Arcade, all came into being because the creators were very passionate and put forth the effort themselves. It was important enough for them to be able to do it themselves and get through the initial lean years themselves.
What I'm trying to say is that it's a lot easier to walk away from something that you've had five people working on for two months rather than something you've worked on by yourself for ten months. -
Re:Interesting phraseEntirely agreed - I believe Mr John Gabriel said it best with his 'Greater Internet Fuckwad Theory'...

Re:what i've heard
Yep, same ol', same ol':
obPennyArcade link.
"Gabe's going to cancel his account when he finds out that it takes twice the experience to get from this level to this level, or the materials you worked so hard to get are destroyed because of some arbitrary roll. For you and me, hey, maybe we don't mind that kind of thing. Maybe we hate ourselves already and see the genre as a way to work off spiritual debt, like a karmic gym. Regular people, a definition I don't usually apply to Gabe, but whatever - regular people know that things like that are bullshit."
Sounds like another "toss your skills and critical thinking out the window" game. It's unlikely I'll be purchasing it. -

People sometimes do this out of anger...
A while ago some people were auctioning off CD's with all the cartoons from Homestar Runner on eBay. Some fans got pissed at the people selling the CD's and overbid them to millions of dollars. I've seen it happen to people trying to sell CD's of Penny Arcade strips as well.

What stores are you looking in?
CompUSA (aka: CompUSSR) has working models of cell phones on display.
Yes, they are attached to the table with those little steal-proof bungie cord thingies. But the phones themselves are fully working models, powered on and sitting in their chargers / docking stations.
Quite playable-with, although you'll probably have to talk to a salesperson if you spend too long prodding buttons. -
Re:Same-Sex marriage allowed in The Sims 2
I think that there is also some gender bending going on in many games already in existence. For example, as a male I generally use a female avatar in games like UT2K3. The female characters are usually smaller and more agile, plus it's a bit more humiliating for many people to be "beaten by a girl". I don't play MMORPG's, but I'm sure there's plenty of straight guys who play as females, and would then be more attracted to the other female characters played by females. I'm sure there's also females who use a male as their in-game avatar. This brings up the interesting situation where you have people engaging in online homosexuality without even realizing it.

Re:Money fairiesWhat do you do when someone slips right in front of you? Sometimes you laugh. Falling can be funny. You're not saying "haha, you walk very badly, I walk much better than you." Everyone falls down sometimes.
Indeed, people who are incapable of walking without falling are not funny. They are sad.
The point of my post was the micropayments bit. Hence the subject "money fairies." A Penny Arcade reference usually works on
/.Relying on advertising to fund a new medium doesn't work very well anymore. There are too many advertisments out there, too much mindspace to control. It's as unreliable as micropayments.
There are ads in traditional comics... but comics aren't free. There are ads on cable TV... but cable TV is not free. There are ads on the bus stops... but the bus is not free.
There probably will be advertising in these comics, but you're still going to have to pay.

Absolutely not. When was the last time you played CS? The only social skills you could learn from it are sexism, racism, and smack talk.

Re:Country Store vs. Apple Store?
But there is an obvious difference between the two retail stores. What are the core differences
The answer, my friend, lies with today's Penny Arcade comic... :) -
Not bad, give it a few weeks.I'd never heard of this show til I saw an ad for it right before it came on. I don't watch much TV, but it looked like it might be decent, so I watched it.
Overall it feels like it was well written, then attacked by a commitee of executives. There are moments that are really funny and well animated, but there are clunkers, too. The fact that there ARE actually good jokes and references give me hope that it could become a good show if it gets time to mature. Seinfeld, and even the Simpsons didn't find their stride until a few seasons in, I'd like to see this show get that same chance.
A few game references I spotted:
-A guy comes out of nowhere and punches the dad while they're at a mall and he says, "What is this, Vice City?"
-The mom is an obvious Lara Croft wannabe, always raiding tombs looking for sacred artifacts to decorate her home with, she even has the dual pistols. Her daughter starts picketing outside the tombs for desecrating them.
-A sort of old, fat, and bitter Sonic knockoff named Turbo who they adopt as a pet and who encourages the kids to smoke and rob stores
-The oddworld cast, of course, (we even see Abe do his "sneak-by" move), which attacks Turbo at the end. They even got the names for a few of them right;
-The son skates through the mall, grinding on escaltors just like Tony Hawk games.
As another poster mentioned they seem to be flipping between standard sitcom stuff (the dad has to take his daughter to buy her first bra) and video-game-characters-as-a-family humor (their neighbors are kung-fu fighters who are constantly fighting off ninjas that are attacking their house). They need to find their balance between these. Some of the jokes are less than hilarious (the father brings all the manly stuff he can carry when they go to the ligere (sp?) shop), but there's some really funny stuff like when the daughters yelling over the cell phone wakes up the monsters the mom is trying to creep by, and the dad can't figure out how to drive the moms high-tech minivan ("Don't you drive a car for a living, dad?" "Shut up!").
The animation can be a little weak at times, but I can forgive that on a weekly show. I even saw a texturing problem when the mom was fighting the big rock monster at the end. The Turbo character annoys me for some reason.
Overall I'm willing to watch the show to see if they can iron out these problems. There's lots of good stuff they could do, there's always new games coming out. Think if Penny Arcade-style humor was made into a show, like this recent comic.

It wasn't the branding. It was the fact that Nokia chose to combine bad marketing with a bad product. And I wouldn't be at all surprised if Tycho and Gabe had something to do with it, either. Gaming culture in general backlashed against the N-Gage and that turned it into a non-product. And who wants to hold something shaped like a taco to their ear, anyway? -
