Re:a fitting quote
You, sir, are a moron.
I'm merely pointing out that if we're going to have any sort of rational discussion, it can't be done with infantile devices like "M$". -
Re:Too Bad...
Dammit, when you refer to a darpa.mil URL in an item like this it should point to some space-age particle beam device that would turn the offending "Warbling Chattybitch" in the seat next to you into a pile of ash. Or better yet, cocaine. Now that would be an invention.
On a more realistic (and practical) note, if they're in front of you and you have a good (and accurate, please) arm, you can always use the partially-chewed hot tamale. They have an excellent size / mass ratio so they can be accurately thrown, and they're extra-sticky. -

Oh nos! CmdrTaco a SWITCHER!?
A week with a Mac laptop, running OS X?
We are all doomed! Once you go Mac, you never go back!
Next he'll be dressing up in black, sporting a goatee, and drinking pretentious coffee drinks...
Like him! -

Opinion: Lock Harry Knowles up as well......
The charges? 13 counts of receiving stolen goods.Anything that gets kid of Harry Knowles and his gigantic fleshy jowls is okay in my book. Unfortunately, there aren't enough poison doughnuts in the world that we could cram down the expansive gullet of the horrible beast known as Harry Knowles.

Moronic no matter who uses it
I'm sorry, but these types of ads are absolutely moronic no matter who uses them. They are both arrogant and condescending. Personally, I've never been swayed by commercials to buy something, but the Apple commercials DID sway me NOT to buy an Apple. Here I was on the verge of buying an iBook and then I saw those commercials and I chose not to buy it. My friends have expressed similar disgust. This is so true.

Tycho Brache said it best...
this was kinda long, so I'm gonna link to the original and quote some choice passages...
there is some more ranting on the subject on the UT2k3 release day
"when I go out and buy your Goddamned game, and you proceed to rob me of my time and clock cycles with copy protection schemes you imagine secure your bottom line, please let me assure you with the utmost gravity that you are living in a fantasy world. You might as well be drinking fairy wine out of an acorn cap, discussing the finer points of Gryphon Husbandry with their comely queen. The only people these Goddamn mechanisms of yours screw are paying customers, because people who just want to steal your game have always had very easy time of it. You are credulous in the extreme if you perceive otherwise. Put it out of your mind. I said, put it out of your mind."
"There's a halfway house for retardeds like you right across the street from me, you'd love it. They just circle the block, singing songs and drinking Pepsi. Sometimes, they lay by the tree and drink the Pepsi. I never see anybody drinking anything else over there, maybe you get in trouble. It's either that, or Pepsi sponsors congenital defects." -

Gates makes it a war, but we will fight it on our own terms. Isn't choosing the battlefield one of the key points in "The Art of War"?
This is how I see you

Re:Obscenity
Penny Arcade has an excellent illustration of what happens when you get teenage gamers on a headset... it involves sucking... and a particualar body part.

Voice communicationThis Penny Arcade comic strip perfectly illustrates why I am reluctant to play a game online with voice communication:

great debate :-)

SHUT UP (a title, not a flame) :-)
Penny-Arcade has said all that needs to be said, as far as which platform "0wnz", and which is "pwned".
Seriously though, if you really consider yourself a dedicated gamer, you play both console and PC. Purists be damned, they're no better off for their irrational zealosy. Both platforms have great things to offer, and neither one is going away anytime soon. You would think people would take advantage of that awesome diversity and be grateful, instead of being such chattybitch llamas.

There will always be both
At their release consoles will nearly always edge ahead of PCs, but after a few months the PCs will have caught up power wise, if not game wise.
I'd like to reference Penny Arcade's latest strip which I think covers the situation accurately -
Penny Arcade has this topic nailed.
Penny Arcade just covered this topic pretty well, in response to the fallout from the announcement that Starcraft: Ghost would be console-only.

Re:Why not just use I.E.?
Flamebait? Umm... sorry guys. I wasn't trying to start a holywar about Operating Systems.
You more than likely got modded down because your post went against Slashbot groupthink. If you're not rabidly opposed to everything MS (excuse me, M$) does, some crack-addict Slashbot moderator will attempt to blast your post into oblivion. It's what passes for advocacy around here. I'll allow that some of Microsoft's recent actions are less than admirable, but the average Slashbot's reaction to mere mention of the company is puerile.

Re:Just dont buy one..
I doubt I'd be able to cook nearly as well as I can now had it nood been for Alton Brown and Emeril Lagasse.
You needed television in order to learn how to cook?
Sheeeeeyit. Go buy a cookbook, save your braincells.
Don't knock Good Eats. While a cookbook can tell you what ingredients to use and describe a procedure to assemble those ingredients into something edible, it's hard to beat actually watching someone doing something to see how it all comes together. Since you're no longer able to watch everything your mom does in the kitchen (wait a minute...this is
/., there are more than a few people here who probably still live with their parents :-P) and you're not likely to attend the CIA just to learn how to fend for yourself, what's wrong with picking up tips from cooking shows? -

Re:City of Heroes
Well have you played Unreal Tournament 2003 yet? It has this really cool game called Bombing Run. Its like Death Match football, very cool.
Penny Aracde did a little write up of it, and a comic.
You can get the demo from fileplanet of course.

Re:Not if Microsoft expands its monopoly

it's a Slashcode quirk
yeah...I'm an idiot
No. Slashcode inserts spaces in long words to prevent users from performing trivial page-widening attacks on Slashdot's layout. (It's possible to fix them for good with a couple CSS commands, but that doesn't help users of Netscape 4 and IE 4, whose browsers puke on perfectly good CSS.)
On the other hand, links like this are untouched.

Re:Proper spellings
I think Penny Arcade has a strip that sums up your feelings pretty well. If nothing else, it helps to point out the childishness of a lot of the namecalling surrounding Microsoft. Try showing it to the next person who tries to be cool by spelling Microsoft with a '$', or any other such stupidity. With any luck, they'll see how foolish they sound, and if they don't, you can just laugh at their stupidity. It's a win-win situation

Classifieds.
Try online classified advertising. A great example for this is Fark. You pay a small fee, and get a space of text on the front page that links where you want it to. If it goes nowhere you didn't spend much, and if it worked well you have found a space for banner ads. Penny Arcade also does really nice, big ads cheap. If you have a DSL/Cable connection at home or work, run a P2P node carrying mp3s from your band and other indy bands, and instead of carrying the mp3s on your limited web site's bandwidth, tell users to just search for you.

I address you point-by-point
Nope, 100% wrong. Nothing could be more friendly than having 100% control of your computer.
I agree if we use "user-friendly" to mean "we are as accommodating to the user as possible, and we trust the user". However the conventional usage is "we make things as easy for the user as possible", which GNU does not do (emacs, as just one example). GNU authors are geeks who write for geeks, and I think they secretly like the feeling that they are part of a secret club that nobody else can understand.
The goal of GNU is to produce the world's best software and that includes ease of use.
From the horse's mouth: The principal goal of GNU was to be free software. And: The goal of GNU was to give users freedom, not just to be popular.
the easiest installs available anywhere
Newbie software install in Windows: double click on setup.exe, keep clicking OK. Done.
Newbie software install in GNU: Let's see, it's
.tar.gz, so I have to untar it ... can't remember how that works ... man tar ... OK, there it is. Now let's read the README. Configure, fine. GCC not found? What the hell is that?Is there a single piece of comercial software that you can point to that does not have a free analog that's just as easy to use and more powerful?
Linus certainly seems to think so. Remember the kerfuffle over his use of some proprietary package to maintain the Linux kernel? He said he just wanted to use the best tool, whether it was free or not.
What kind of privilege escalation is there on a userless OS?
As many on this forum have established, although Win 95/98 are userless, WinNT does have privilege checking and administrator accounts.
And with reference to your spelling of MS with a dollar sign, you might find this Penny Arcade cartoon helpful.
