This is bullsh*t...
Look at Adobe, releasing something that people don't even really know what it is, while Shockwave, a massively used browser plugin, continues to be untouched.
I'm not going to give Adobe any slack until they release Shockwave for Linux. It's hurting many people, including the education sector, which is continuously switching to OSS platforms. -

I have created the following petition after being wholly unsatisfied with the current state of game ratings affecting console licensing, Manhunt's AO rating being the most recent example. I have sent an email to Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, Wired.Com, the ECA, Rockstar Games, Take-Two, and await response. If you support the petition, please sign it and pass it along to others. Thank you.

Re:TV stations are hardly interested in helping...
Indeed. In the UK, the two biggest broadcasters are the BBC and ITV. Both contract out to "Broadcasting Data Services" (BDS) to collect royalties for the publication of TV listings.
This royalty is enshrined in law (The Broadcasting Act 1987).
The BBC, however, get the Internet and have opened http://backstage.bbc.co.uk/ which gives free non-commercial access. ITV, however, do not. This means that you can't publish any listings for any of the four ITV channels without paying ITV money. More details here.
Given they're in dire straits, it's amazing they aren't more interested in boosting their viewership. A petition has been created to get them to allow free non-commercial use.

Re:Harrison is blaming Sony media/legal dept
Excellent point. If true, it reveals a pressure point on a fault between legal and marketing. And since marketing drives the company, especially in the gamble of whether to expose HW to both XMB (game) and Linux OS'es, this is an important distinction. If Harrison will continue to tell developers like the Slashdot audience that "Sony wants to give developers everything we can", while developers specifically demand access to the RSX, then Harrison (and his marketing staff) can be used for his power inside Sony.
If Harrison had ignored the question, we wouldn't have his signal that he supports Linux development. Getting full access to the PS3 HW is the #1 issue for developers (not just gamers and technophiles) on Slashdot. So now we know where the allies might lie. Continued pressure just might get them to expose at least 2D APIs to RSX, if not everything needed for at least Beryl, if not Duke Nukem Forever (;), under Linux.
Until I saw your analysis, I thought Sony would never expose RSX to Linux, as that would be the little hole in their license royalty balloon. But if their marketing execs want it, then there is very much a chance. Even if they're just pretending they do to look cool for developers they're planning to leave cold, there's still a chance to campaign on their words to get them to help. It's worth doing. That RSX is 1.8TFLOPS of graphics power, dwarfing even the Cell's 0.2TFLOPS. With Beryl, we're talking about a superfast desktop like in a SF movie (hell, we're talking about a realtime rendered SF movie in full rez on the desktop). Let's get it! -

Help Keep Internet Radio Online
Whats Happening
On Friday March 2nd 2007, the Copyright Royalty Board announced new royalty rates for Internet Radio stations. The rates are retroactive to January of 2006.
The new rates are far higher than any industry experts expected. In fact, if they remain unchanged, bankruptcy looms for many online radio stations.
The new rates essentially levy a tax of $0.0011 per performance. Now, that doesn't sound bad does it. But consider this. Each hour, the average radio station plays 16 songs. So that's about 1.76c per hour, per listener. A station with 500 listener average would be hit with fees of $211 per day, $6,336 a month or $76,000 a year.
This amount of money is beyond the resources of all but the very wealthiest of corporations. Many of the internet radio stations are run by enthusiasts and hobbyists. These small stations are the ones bringing new music, and old favorites to you every day. Music you can't hear on corporate-owned terrestrial stations.
Could this be the day the music died?
What can you do?
If you enjoy internet radio, HEARING YOUR BAND ON INTERNET RADIO, you need to make your feelings known right now to your representatives in the Congress and Senate. Write to them and ask them to help repeal the decision of March 2nd by the Copyright Royalty Board. It only takes a couple of minutes.

Re:News At 11, Industry Insider Hates Nonconformis
I say that the Wii isn't all about mini-games. All the hype around the Wii just focuses on the fun-factor that the mini-games produce (which is nothing to sneeze at). Nintendo can headline games with much greater scope, as long as developers are willing to put that much depth into something on a more "family-oriented" console. I'll bet they could make adventure games and RPGs a lot more addictive to play on the Wii if they added another peripheral. (petitiononline.com/wiiwalk)

I didn't understand what he meant either - I've had flash on my linux machine for a couple of years at least. Then I see the other comments - X86 only... that's a shame, so I googled it and found this - http://www.petitiononline.com/fla4lppc/
A petition to bring flash to PPC linux. I suspect it's less of an issue now than ever, seeing as macs are moving to x86 chips, and they were by far the largest supplier of consumer ppc chips (though not the only one). -

Re:Google has more to lose here than one might thi
What a great comment. I never heard of Google Answers until a few months ago when a friend became involved with it. I found myself loving the service. My friend is deeply upset at the loss of it. I don't see how the service cost Google money, since the customers paid for the questions and Google got 25% of the cut. It's just that Google hasn't cared about it in about three years. Anyway, a petition has been created to save the service (or just to let Google know that it will not end quietly): http://petitiononline.com/ganswers http://www.savegoogleanswers.com/ And this is a great video on how Yahoo Answers is not a replacement for GA: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4E5btrmqyA

Campaign to save Google Answers
If Google Answers were an independent company, Google would pay $100 million or more for it.
I believe that it is less "evil" to keep Google Answers than to end it so suddenly, at Christmastime, when many people depend on it for a living. Many Researchers are disabled or senior citizens, and every researcher does their own bit to help the world through their research. There is no reason for Google to give up on it rather than improving it.
Help keep Google Answers by signing this petition!

"I read an article today in which Eric Raymond proposed that we abolish the GPL restrictions on free software. His logic is all wrong. Open-source means nothing without the cover of the GPL license. I hope ESR decides to publicly reverse his position. If not he should sit down and shut up before he undoes all the good that others have done before and after him. I used to admire you Eric. Re:Great for now, but let's see how long it lasts.
For the record, I absolutely love my country, which is why I can't stand the direction it is going, especially since the coup back in 1913 when the private banking cartel managed to take over the country for real. Perhaps if you don't feel like you're being censored, it's because your views are more mainstream than mine. I left for China, coincidentally, the day after the US invaded Iraq. Leading up to that I was working for Gateway and traveling to South Dakota every week, along with other people involved in the same CRM project. It literally got to the point where I just wouldn't open my mouth because I had to continue working with those people and the looks of hatred that came along with the verbal abuse and labels of "anti-American" "why don't you move back overseas if you don't like it" etc. were quite startling. Before that, I was just a kooky oddball who was always spouting off during flu season about mercury and monkey viruses in vaccines, the fact that fluoride in water is a really bad idea discovered by the Nazis, etc. which got me curious looks, but nothing like the wrath I felt before leaving.
My comment about feeling freer to express myself here in China has a lot to do with finding sympathetic ears when I bemoan US imperialism. However, most Chinese I talk to are buying into all I oppose hook, line and sinker. I do my best to get people to investigate things for themselves instead of just swallowing it down whole, same as I do in the US. Of course there are real limits to my freedoms here, and I am certainly much freer than most Chinese people who can't even travel outside the country except in large groups. It isn't as though I like the Chinese government better, but at least Chinese people don't go around bragging about how "free" they are. Look around you and you will find others there in the US who feel the same way about what's happening, only the might not speak out because they are tired of being called "un-American".

iPod may not always be around
Apple actively protects the iPod name. Big problems will arise for any company that uses the name "iPod" for their MP3 player device.
The beauty of digital media is that Apple has already done that: iPod currently plays AAC, MP3, Audible Audio, AIFF, and WAV. The only current format missing from this list that I strongly desire Apple to add (and you can sign a petition here) is OGG Vorbis. -

Also, MS doesn't care about warranties, as the US XBox 360 comes with a whopping 3 month warranty. Many, many complaints on this one, including an internet petition here. Sad to see the open source version leaving.......
This is really a shame. Great projects such as ncutil were built for darwin and are very useful within an OS X environment.
Sun really has the right idea, with an open source operating system. Darwin should stay open source; open source is a great idea.
A partition has been setup for people to beg for the open darwin project to be kept alive. I am signing!
