Stop Apple, save the kids!

When I first heard of the iPod digital media player, I thought little of it; it was surely only another plaything of an elite group of tinkerers from MIT. Imagine my suprise when, hardly a year later the iPod was not used only by tech junkies, but also by young professionals, teenagers and even parents such as myself. Tired of lugging around a large case of CDs with me whenever I went out, I gave in an purchased an iPod. Little did I know what I was getting myself into.
My high school aged son, John, became very interested in my iPod and helped me configure my settings. He seemed to want one, too, so I bought him one for his birthday. I bought a modest 10 gigabyte iPod with a black and white display, but since John was turning sixteen I decided to treat him to the best iPod out there. His came with 40 gigabyte of memory and a crystal clear video display which he could use to watch videos of his favorite Contemporary Christian bands. I had put parental controls on our only computer, so I didn't worry about John downloading sinful music produced by the likes of the Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel, both music groups which glorified drug use and promiscuity. I was safe that my son's constant adjustments and late night projects on his iPod were nothing but wholesome. My husband had told me that me that as long as John did not use any hacking programs such as Linux or BSD he wouldn't be able to do anything but fill his iPod with a library full of Christian music. John continued his little technological projects throughout the summer. Fall arrived, and I sent him off to enjoy another year of wholesome education at the local Catholic high school. His iPod was stowed in his bag along with a boxlike device I had been assured was extra memory. The months went on without anything of notice, until mid-November when I was interrupted during my ladies' Bible study at my home by the school. The caller ID showed me the school was calling, but what for? Had John been hurt? Was the school evacuated? The principal was on the line, but he didn't tell me anything except it would be best I came to the school right away for him to explain the situation. I rushed out the door and sped down the road.
What the principal told me nearly sent me into shock. While I had thought that my John was the most Catholic son on the planet, it was revealed to me that he had been trading pornography in school. Not just magazines furtively thrust into each other's lockers, but using his video iPod, a present for his sixteenth birthday, to trade pornographic images with other iPod users. His constant tinkering, he confessed to me, has not been to streamline his technology, but rather to facilitate the storage and exchange of this foul smut. The "extra memory" was nothing more than a device running a Linux program called "WINE" to expedite the smut exchanges. The school took swift and proper action and promptly expelled all of the children trading pornography. However, this was not punishment enough. I slapped a chastity belt right on my sinful son and made him destroy his pornography archive himself. I thought I had raised my child well, but apparently the mental illness of lust could not be controlled by a schedule filled to overflowing with Mass, youth group and Bible study. After conferring with my husband, we decided it was best to hospitalize John. We pray that the wisdom of the Catholic psychologists will be able to cure John of his sinful lust for unclothed girlflesh.
However, the temptations and ruin that the Macintosh corporation is peddling to America's children does not have to end like it did with John. I am asking that parents sign the petition here () to ask that Macintosh place a warning label on their iPod products warning parents that the iPo -

Google Print solution in hand - support COCOAThe good news is... we have the solution in hand.
We've been working on this problem since Amazon released Search Inside the Book; we brought together experts from both ends of the copyright spectrum, and have developed a solution, called the COCOA (Copyright Owners' Control of Access) standard.
See http://www.copyrightaccess.com/ for details (and if you support it, please sign our petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/cocoa/petition.html
) .Some notes-- COCOA does not inhibit indexing, searching, or displaying text snippet search results.
On the contrary, COCOA will result in far more books and more pages being available, legally.
Please read how COCOA works at the site, read the FAQ, and by all means ask via the comment form on the site if you have questions. There have unfortunately been a number of misconceptions of what COCOA is or how it works. So, if COCOA somehow doesn't look good to you, please ask for clarification since COCOA was specifically designed to satisfy just about everyone regardless where they stand on copyright matters.
Thanks for having a look (and signing the petition and spreading the word, if you're so inclined),
--Dr. Andrew Burt,
Chair, The COCOA Association -
LibrariesBorrowing from a library or reading in a bookstore are hugely different, for these reasons:
(1) The library paid for the copy you're borrowing. (Or somebody paid for it, in case the book was donated to the library.) Thus the author was paid for that copy. If you read a whole copyrighted book via a Content Display Site (CDS - Google Print, Amazon Search Inside, etc.) and never buy the book, the author wasn't paid. Copyright law is about creating new copies; you're not creating a new copy when you read in a store or from a library.
(2) Browsing in a bookstore is pretty inconvenient. You can't take the copy with you to look at any time you want. (Unless you buy it! That's sort of the point.) Bookstores know that few people really read entire books in the store -- else they'd go out of business. However, reading a book from a CDS doesn't have that limitation: You can take it with you, on your laptop, etc. This is particularly critical in light of digital paper, when the digital copy is the paper copy.
(3) Libraries and bookstore reading isn't anywhere near free: You have to move your physical body to the bookstore to read. For one thing, you can't likely do that at 3am. (And certainly not in your pajamas.) You can't do it from your bed, couch, or desk, without getting up. You have to spend time to move your body down there, which might be 10min-30min each way; 20-60min round trip, plus say 10min to find the book, a place to sit, etc; call it 30-70min. If you value your time at say, $10/hr, that's $5-12. Then there's the cost of transportation. If the library/bookstore is three miles away, 6mi. round trip, and gas costs $2.50/gal., and you get 20mi/gal., that's another $.75. The IRS figures driving a car costs $.405/mile in repairs, wearing it out, etc., so that's another $2.40. So you're at something like $8-15 to go read a "free" book.
Really -- if it were that free, people would do a lot more of it.
Yet reading a free copy from a CDS doesn't have those limitations. It is much closer to $0, actually and truly free. THAT's the problem.
(4) You can't pass on a "free" copy you read in the store or from the library. You have to leave the book at the bookstore (or buy it); you have to return the book to the library. Reading a book in digital form that was stolen from a CDS, you could pass that copy on to others by email, via a web page, P2P software, etc.
So, bottom line, bookstore/library reading isn't really free. CDS copies are essentially free, and that's the problem. They're too convenient to read free.
This is one of the reasons we formed the COCOA Association ( http://www.copyrightaccess.com/ ), to make more copyrighted work available. (Note, COCOA does not inhibit indexing and searching and returning text snippet search results -- just what page images can be displayed.) If you support this, please sign our petition at http://www.petitiononline.com/cocoa/petition.html -- thanks!

poor support for classical
And poorly served by CDDB, etc., I might add.
Really?
YES. And for classical music folks, iTunes/iPod is a nightmare (try organizing 20GB of existing classical MP3s onto your ipod- what a mess. You have to make individual playlist for each cd, pretty much on the ipod). CDDB is especially bad. I just turn CDDB off when playing a CD.
Not to mention iPods have a 'gap' in the playback- a short pause before advancing to the next track. It's not so great to hear a violin solo being cut in half with a gap, as a new movement starts. There have been lots of complaints about this. This flaw went unfixed in the new ipods.
And then putting an ipod in shuffle mode with classical music... Tchaik 4 third movement; then Brandenburg 2 second movement; Brahms 3 first movement; etc. Not really made with classical music in mind, but I suppose the larger market share is into pop music.
I say you can't beat good ol' LPs for classical music. ....though they are hard to play on the go. :) -
Sign the Online Petition against Sony!
Probably the best way to show that not all the consumers are as stupid as Sony hopes that we are is to vote with our pockets. Boycott them until they offer a suitable solution to this mess, apologize to the consumers whos computers may have been damaged and change their strategy all together. I have started a petition which I hope will make its rounds. You are all welcome to sign it and send it on to everyone you know. http://www.petitiononline.com/sonydrm/

Oh well, if you change your mind at any time, you can call that number and leave a message.

Weird reporting, rather than the end of the world!
Recent press reports make this sound as if Microsoft had devoured its one and only contender to the smartphone crown - and we'd all have to start clicking tiny Windows icons (and the reset button) on our cellphones, forever, really soon now. Curiously, almost all of these reports seem to forget how Symbian/Psion (and Linux itself) make a great platform for a smartphone OS while having many years of extremely loyal following by both countless customers and the mobile industry giants.

Mutant League Football
http://www.petitiononline.com/MLF/
Mutant League Football managed to be one of the most entertaining football games ever released for a video game system, eschewing petty realism and NFL line-ups in favor of silly things like mutated robotic alien players and playbooks that included such classics as "Kill the Ref".
Instead of churning out the same old 3D crap over and over year after year they should take a look at putting out titles that sacrifice some of the realism in exchange for something unique.
Bring Back Mutant League Football!!

American designer! [was Re:Yeah right...]
Most "Japanese" cars sold in the USA are made in North America by North Americans. More and more they are designed by Americans.
I sincerely hope that Americans do not get to design more cars. Chris Bangle has made a mess of the BMW designs (compare the old 5 and 7 series with the new ones). In fact, there is a petition to fire him which you might want to hop over and sign. The good news is that the value of the pre-Bangle BMWs must have increased greatly in the pre-owned market. -

Re:But will it still be ATI crap.
I used to love ATI cards.. the only problems I had were some minor settling in issues with my motherboard, 9700 Pro and XP being incompatible, but that was fixed with a simple BIOS settings change.
I was satisfied.
Until I installed linux. Now I have a choice
* Use old versions of X.org and the kernel that are actually reasonably stable with fglrx and put up with 6x slower (benchmarked) 2d performance, coupled with lots of features not working properly.
* Use the opensource drivers and get no 3d accel.
I opted for opensource. They're not the most stable drivers, but they are far more stable than the fglrx ones. If I need 3d, I start another X server with a different config. Thank god I'm not one of the people affected by the fglrx crash when running multiple X servers.
I'd switch to nvidia if it wasn't a laptop.
nVidia's drivers aren't the shit, but they're better than ATI's.
This is coming from a previous die-hard ATI fan, but I'm not the only one who feels this way...
http://www.petitiononline.com/atipet/petition.html
Very nice when running under XP though (except for when my ATI control panel fails to load and i have to reinstall the drivers, but that has stopped happening recently). -

Twist the knife
I agree with your tactics here and want to recommend an additional technique. When the new Lucas turd is released at your theater, get ten of your like-minded anti-commercial friends together to go see the film. Buy tickets for one of the first weekend screenings that are expected to sell out. This is key. As soon as the commercials start, have all ten of your team march out to the manager, and demand your money back on those tickets because of the commercials. The manager will give you a refund, and have to swallow the ten empty seats on opening weekend as lost potential revenue due to the blight of pre-movie commercials.
For those interested, here's a website organizing people to protest commercials in theaters. Interestingly, these folks call themselves "CaptiveAudience.org" -- Regal Theaters uses the term "captive audience" on the section of the Regal website where they try to solicit corporations to buy ads in their theaters. (Check the flash animation on the left.)
Sign the petition to be presented to Regal Cinema. -

Re:Scientoligy... please
I agree entirely. Which other "religion" copyrights its sacred doctrines and intentionally tries to restrict access to them? Nobody objects when people quote passages from the Bible, or the Koran, or the Torah. Gideons are tripping over themselves trying to make sure that your hotel room has a Bible.
In my opinion, Scientology uses its copyrights to bilk people out of money.
From what I understand, the way that you progress through the various levels of Scientology is to spend money on expensive "cleansing" sessions, e-meters, etc. Only after spending large sums of money do you actually get access to the highest-level religious texts. Only after spending large sums of money do you learn that the "religion" you're participating in is based on what I would call a fairy-tale about aliens, other planets, and various tenets which do not even remotely agree with current knowledge in the fields of biology, physics, and astronomy (three real Sciences).
It is my belief that the reason there are so many "high profile" Scientologists is that by the time they've spent thousands or even millions of dollars to learn what their religion is really about, they don't want to admit being duped or taken for a ride. Instead, they stick with the story, perhaps even convincing themselves that it's true.
Compare to the elderly people you see in the news now and then who fall for the 419 scam. First they send $5,000 to some guy in Nigeria. When nothing happens, they don't want to believe that they were scammed, so they send another $2,500 to cover the "duty fees" on their pending "$10,000,000.00 (TEN MILLION DOLLARS U.S.)" payment. Several months later after they've wired their entire life savings into a black hole, many of them still refuse to believe they were conned.
As far as I'm concerned, Scientology operates the same way. I think that Scientology is a business, not a religion, and should not have the benefits granted to religion in the US (especially the tax-exempt status).
You probably noticed how many disclaimers I've put into this post. That's because I've heard that Scientology is sue-happy, will show up and picket your house, will intimidate people you know, and will use other tactics to try and seek revenge for those who make negative comments about them. I don't want to be sued, and I'd rather not have my house picketed, so I'm doing my best to make it abundantly clear that this post contains my opinions based upon what I've heard. If you want to re-read my post and pretend that the italicized parts aren't there, that's your business.

Russ has gotten some heat..
I wonder if this petition has anything to do with this decision? For the uninitiated, Russ wrote on his blog (and since removed it) about corporate black culture, in an article titled "Blacks are Lazy."
Here's the google cache of the withdrawn article. -
Re:Not to mention...
So what is the case then?
As someone who doesn't follow the mailing lists I had assumed the new logo was to replace beastie. Is it just for use in southern USA? :)
Theres even 2000 people who signed the petition . -

Re:Flash for Rich Web Applications
I don't understand why developers still look at HTML fix ups to make web applications rich. Especially when a tool like Macromedia's Flash allows a developer to build a rich web application with a clean interface that truly mimics a desktop application's.
Let me know when it works on my iBook running Debian (Google Maps behaves perfectly). And I'm sure people running BSDs and proprietary Unixes are equally thrilled by Flash. Clearly Macromedia doesn't care much for cross-platform compatibility, given that they completely ignore this petition (there is even a version of RealPlayer for Linux on PPC).

Re:Apple ... 20GB more, but no AC adapter, no FW?
Did you check whether there's still an AC adapter and a Firewire cable included?
Most of the new iPods do not include these items anymore.
See the
Apple should bring FireWire back to iPods
petition here:

Skimping on accessoriesIt seems to be the iPod way these days, but part of the price reductions come from fewer pack-in accessories. Apple did the same thing last year with the price cut on the 20 GB 4G.
iPod minis no longer include an AC charger, and the iPod photos no longer include a dock, carrying case, or AV cable. Apparently they'll have USB host support with an accessory though, and you'll be able to download and view photos right from your camera.
But most shocking of all to the "faithful" is the lack of a firewire cable with any iPod. It's optional across the board. Apple sold Macs with USB 1 and Firewire very recently, so they're essentially screwing over their fans. There's already a petition to but the cable back in the box. And you don't want to piss of a Mac fanatic!
I'm kinda disappointed with the lack of Bluetooth, though. It'd be nice to have the music pause when a call comes in on my T616, and maybe allow the headphones to double as a headset. iTunes already pauses the music for me courtesy of Salling Clicker.

Sign The Petition to Have the Content Restored!
There is a petition in need of sigs to have the missing content (the endings at least) restored to the game.

It may be a futile hope, but it's all us mere mortal consumers can muster these days. -

Probably won't change anything, although it's a magnitude better than silence. -
I guess this is Orbitz way ...This is Orbitz way of saying to all their users "Happy Valentine's Day - and all your posts are belong to us".

Re:Cool!
they are certainly growing in Antarctica and Iceland, what do you make of that?
They're *shrinking*, not growing, in both those locations.--

Re:Cool!
Think of recurring global catastrophies that make the recent tidal wave look like "just another day". I agree with most of what you say, but the tsunami was caused by plate tectonics. Kind of unrelated... I was referring to the death toll.
I guess I should have made it clear I was referring to the death toll. Sorry for the lack of clarity.--
