Not Just Ham Radio: Western Inventiveness !!The article starting this thread of dicussion shows, yet again, the inventiveness of Westerners. Although we, for decades, score poorly on international assessments of mathematical and science ability at the high school level, compared to Chinese from Taiwan, we also consistently outengineer the Chinese. What is happening here?
Not only do we excel at engineering, we also excel at compassion. Below is a tally of the latest contributions to the relief effort in Southern Asia.
1. USA $350 million + several hundred million dollars of indirect aid (e.g. naval armada arriving near Sri Lanka to do search and rescue)
2. Japan $500 million
3. Australia $810 million
4. China (including Taiwan province and Hong Kong) $8 millionThe compassion of Westerners can objectively be said to be greater than the compassion of Chinese by, at least, 2 orders of magnitude.
Perhaps, our compassionate and supportive society creates the right environment for people who perform poorly on written tests but who excel at engineering creativity. It makes you wonder, don't it?

Boycotting Chinese Products: HP iPaqI have a sneaking suspicion that the new HP iPaq is manufactured in China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong). If such is the case, we should boycott this product.
Various organizations like PushBack.com have called on a nationwide boycott of Chinese products. So, too, have the Western network of Tibetan organizations.

West: +1; China: 0Has anyone noticed a pattern in scientific achievement? Taiwan regularly scores #1 or #2 in assessments of scientific or mathematic skills among high schoolers. Yet, basic breakthroughs are still the domain of the Americans, Canadians, Germans, and other groups who are not so stellar on these assessments.
As well, Americans in particular are outstanding on the social sciences, compassion, and good citizenry. Chinese society does much less well, especially on compassion metrics.

Lucky to be in the USAYou are very lucky to be in the USA. If you were in China, then your privacy would be sold to the highest bidder or the Chinese Intelligence agencies.
The problem is not Chinese laws. The problem is Chinese culture. A Chinese does not care about privacy for anyone except himself.
Notice the lack of Chinese immigrants in the membership of the American Civil Liberties Union or Amnesty International. You tell me what is "going down" here.

Who Answers the Door? The person who usually answers the door of opportunity is a Westerner. The person who usually slams the door is a Chinese.
In this crisis, here is the tally of nations who have contributed money.
1. USA: $350 million plus additional millions in indirect aid
2. Japan: $500 million
3. China (including Taiwan province and Hong Kong): $7 million
The compassion of the West is at least 2 orders of magnitude greater than the compassion of the Chinese.
Faced with a Thai child whose parents were killed by the tsunami, Americans would immediately adopt the child. The Chinese would put bullet in the kid's head; "Better to reduce the surplus population," sayeth the Chinese.

Military Applications: China vs. NATOI can imagine some serious military applications. The Chinese paint their tanks with the colors and designations of NATO and, then, proceed to launch an invasion of the Ukraine. Here, I am looking 10 years into the future when Ukraine has joined NATO.
The Chinese sweep through the Ukraine, raping and killing children in much the same fashion that the Chinese conduct themselves today in Tibet. The invasion of Ukraine is quick because the Ukrainians are fooled into thinking that the weapons are NATO.
Then, once the invasion of the country is complete, the Chinese peel off the NATO colors and paint their equipment blood red, restoring them to their original fascist colors.

Need Game Boxes and Mac to Run LinuxWhat would drive the development of games on Linux is convincing the game manufacturers (e.g. Sony and its PS) to use Linux as the operating system and Apple to use Linux instead of BSD as the basis of MacOS.
Actually, what would help even more is to stop piracy in China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong). Without piracy, the average cost of Windows XP in China would rise from 10 American cents to about $200. Then, there would be huge market demand for using Linux since it would be free and would not be competing with a "free" (i.e. pirated) version of Windows.
Then, the huge market in China would drive the development of games on Linux.
Of course, all this talk is sheer fancy since we can never stop piracy in China. Stealing and brutalizing are integral parts of Chinese culture, celebrated and encouraged by most Chinese.

Un-Funny Military Applications: China and NASANASA should safeguard the technology for aiming a small projectile at another flying projectile. This technology is precisely what is used by the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI). If the Chinese gained access to this technology, via their Taiwanese spies at American national laboratories, then the USA would be in grave trouble.
Why? The Chinese would then be able to develop methods of defeating our proposed anti-missile shield that we are developing with Japan, Australia, Canada, and England.

My Prediction for 2005: HW Migrating to ChinaMy prediction for VOIP in 2005 is that most of the hardware for VOIP will be manufactured in China, which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong. The reality is that, due to unfair trade barriers, the Chinese can manufacture the hardware at much lower cost than the Americans.
Has anyone ever wondered by Atheros Communication went public while it was still losing money? Chinese competition is the answer.

Bandwidth is Profit Opportunity for Micro$oftOn the contrary, bandwidth is a profit opportunity for Micro$oft. It could simply sell a service for, say, $5 / month to remotely do system administration for the customer's computer. Micro$oft is providing a service for Windows and Micro$oft applications.
There is nothing unique about Earthlink providing the same service. Indeed, Micro$oft has an advantage because its engineers wrote most of the applications running on the customer's computer, so the customer is more likely to buy system administration from Micro$oft instead of an ISP.
Also, customers would be wary of buying system administration from an anonymous company. It could be a Chinese company pretending to be an American one and would plant malware, trojan horses, and other crap on the customer's computer.
Customers would prefer Micro$oft because it is a known name.

China: Bulk for Private, Piracy NetworksChina is the location of most of these private networks dedicated for piracy. If we really wanted to stop the Chinese, what we should do is to fight fire with fire. Create a worm or virus that attacks only networks and computers in China.
The work or virus would re-program the computer at missile command in Beijing. Imagine the "fun" when a Chinese ICBM automatically launches and lands directly in Canton.

Concurrence of FateThat so many heavenly bodies will be visible leads one to suspect whether the gravitation pull of those bodies may have been just "so" to irritate the surface of the earth, causing the recent tsunami.
Dr. Michael Savage noted on his New Year's Eve radio program that some religious clerics believe that the tsunami was God's vengeance against the prostitutes of Thailand and the Muslims of the affected areas. The southern tip of Thailand is a brothel of pedophilia, and you already know about the Islamic fascists. Dr. Savage asked, "Did God kill the Muslims to avenge 9/11?"
On a more serious note, Japan has just pledged $500 million for aid to Southern Asia. The USA has pledged $350 million plus hundreds of millions in indirect aid (e.g. sending a naval task force to do search and rescue).
China? The Chinese donated roughly $0.00.

Recounts are Subject to NoiseJust like the original count, recounts are subject to human error. Each time that you do a recount, the numbers will change slightly. In a close election, that change is sufficient to alter the results of an election.
The 129 votes is within the noise of human error. Do yet another recount, and the votes may shift in favor of the other candidate.
Personally, I support the candidate who has the guts to stand up to the Taiwanese community and to deal sternly with China.

Protect the Seas But Ignore Mexican Border? The system of buoys is clever and low-cost, but you also need a network of underground sonar tracking stations. The Chinese have repeatedly tested our naval perimeters by sending submarines into American waters. The idea of Chinese kidnapping American citizens and hauling them onto a Chinese submarine (in North Korean style) poses a significant threat to the American population.
As well, what is the purpose of just protecting the seas when our border with Mexico is completely unsecure? The Chinese have troops on the Mexican side of the border. Further Islamic thugs have made trips back and forth across that border.
LaRaza be damned. We should pull out troops out of South Korea and put them on the US-Mexican border.

Not So Funny: China and its ThreatThis new distributed computing technology which Microsoft will incorporate into Windows must be safeguarded from China. The Chinese would use it to enhance their military capability.
In particular distributed computing has particular use in doing wargame simulations. The Pentagon has been doing its simulations on distributed systems for, at least, a decade.

NASA and ChinaNASA must ensure that Chinese nationals (from mainland China, Taiwan province, or Hong Kong) are banned from this project to create a 50 foot robot. If the Chinese learn the technology behind the robot, they would build an army of them and equip them with flamethrower and machine guns.
This army of robots would be a nightmare for the military forces of Japan and the USA.

Top Science Story: Sex Ratio ImbalanceDo a search on Yahoo! Search for Valerie Hudson. She is a professor at Brigham Young University and made a startling discovery that the sex ratio imbalance in Asia has dire political consequences. She discussed the matter in her book, "Bare Branches", and has authored essays in "The Economist" and the "Washington Post".
Note that the sex ratio at birth (SRB) in China is 1.20. The SRB in Korea and India is also 1.20.
The normal SRB is 1.05. Vietnam, the USA, and Japan have an SRB of 1.05.
Sometimes, the most important discoveries are made in the social sciences although geeks generally do not consider the social sciences to be "real" sciences.

Westerner : Likely Author of Anti-WormThe person who created the Anti-Worm worm is likely a Westerner. The person who created the actual worm is likely a non-Westerner.
This kind of benevolence in the West is common. Below is a list of countries who have pledged money to help the tsunami's victims in Southern Asia.
1. USA $40 million
2. Japan $30 million
3. Australia $7 million
4. China $0.00'Nuff said.

Worry Depends on Malware, Viruses from ChinaThe Chinese are targetting Microsoft Internet Explorer. The Chinese generate most of the spam, viruses, and malware attacking MS Windows and MS IE. If 2005 brings an upsurge in spam, viruses, and malware from China, then the marketshare of FireFox will skyrocket.
If I were a gambling person, I'd bet that FireFox will grow to 25% of the market by 2005 December. The reason is that folks, like those in China, with the kind of malignant, destructive thinking that produces viruses and malware really enjoy the havoc that they are doing. These folks will only do more and more in a way that is similar to a drug addict.
-
What about the social sciences? If you have the opportunity, do a search for "Valerie Hudson" and "Bare Branches". The former is a researcher at Brigham Young University; she came upon the startling but true conclusion that the sex ratio imbalance in Asia has dire political ramifications. The latter is the book that she wrote, discussing the subject. Also, she has authored essays for "The Economist" and "The Washington Post".
The sex ratio at birth (SRB) of males to females in China is a shocking 1.20. The normal SRB is 1.05.
The SRB for Taiwan province is 1.10. The SRB for Korea is 1.20. The SRB for Indian is 1.20.
Both Japan and the USA have an SRB of 1.05.

Paying Russia is Better than Paying ChinaOn the surface of this matter, it appears to be some sort of extortion. The Americans are paying the cost of most of the International Space Station (ISS) and actually re-designed part of it in order to accomodate the fact that the Russians may not actually build the attachable modules that they promised (due to lack of funds).
However, without Russian re-entry vehicles, there would be no one in our ISS. So, I suppose that paying Russia is, after all, better than paying the Chinese. The Chinese would demand a king's ransom: i.e. access to critical space technologies that would allow the Chinese to accelerate their program to militarize space by installing a particle-beam weapon in low earth orbit.

China: Transparent Electronics & SpyingThe military implications of this technology are clear. Transparent electronics will enable much more efficient spying. Consider a mirror loaded with invicible electronics constituting a CCD camera and a transmitter sitting in the planning center of the Chinese Department of War. The transmitter would transmit the pictures and audio of the activities, in that room, to the Pentagon.
What is vital is that we in the West ban any Taiwanese from working on electronics technologies of such importance. The Taiwanese have a history of spying for Beijing.

Serious Stuff: Defending America from ChinaAll wireless communication should be encrypted in such a way that Homeland Security can intercept and understand the communication via an electronic key. Snooping on the communication is vital to national security.
Many Taiwanese in the USA spy on behalf of Beijing. Only by snooping on their communication can we protect national security assets of this country.

Chinese Memory = BigotryMost people who are alive today never experienced World War II. So, most of us, including the barbaric Chinese, cannot remember any events from that war. We cannot remember what we did not experience.
When the Chinese talk about "remembering World War II" and using that memory to condemn Japan, the Chinese are talking about bigotry. In China, teaching bigotry to children and passing bigotry from one generation to the next is popular and encouraged.
We in the West believe that teaching bigotry is wrong. Western culture is very different from Chinese culture.
By the way, Tokyo has pledged $30 million in relief aid to Southern Asia to assist the victims of the tsunami. Beijing pledged almost nothing. Washington pledged $35 million. Australia pledged $7 million. As always, Chinese culture is very different from Western culture.
I personally favor treating the Chinese in the same way that they treat non-Chinese. We Westerns should use our "memory" of the Korean War, in which millions of Chinese killed Americans defending freedom in South Korea, to condemn the Chinese and to deport the Chinese immigrants without American citizenship back to the Chinese motherland.
-
Serious Comment: Japan & RussiaI, for one, am glad that Tokyo chose to cooperate with Russia on the next satellite launch. The other 3 options are the USA, France, and China.
Apparently, the latest Japanese assessment that China is a hostile foreign power has pervaded the government of Japan, and Tokyo will not be cooperating with Beijing for the intermediate future.
For those who are not aware, the Japanese government recently issued a defense whitepaper identifying Beijing as a hostile military threat. Unlike the Taiwanese, the Japanese do not wish to hand critical space/aeronautical technologies over to the butchers in Beijing.

China: Source of Viruses, Malware, & SpamThe reality is that the bulk of viruses, malware, and spam hails from mainland China. Here, "bulk" is adjusted for GDP per capita: e.g, take the net number of viruses and divide by the GDP per capita.
How can you defend yourself? Go to CNET and download the most popular anti-spyware product produced by a commercial company. Also, buy a commercial anti-virus product: e.g. McAfee. Never respond to e-mail that requests personal information; reputable companies never ask for personal details by e-mail.

His Plight Awaits all Americans in ChinaThe plight of the inventor of optical storage awaits all Americans and their businesses in China. The Commerce Department has noted that Americans invent certain technologies and apply for a Chinese patent on them. The Chinese government stalls on the patent application; meanwhile, a Chinese company accesses the application and applies for a patent on the very same technology invented by an American. The Chinese government then grants the patent to the Chinese company and denies it to the American applicant.
The end result is that if the American company sells, in China, products invented by American engineers, then said American company must pay royalties to the Chinese thief
... er ... company. The American company and its employees will not see a dime resulting from their hardwork.Fair? No. Chinese? Yes.

Utility of the Internet: Information, not MoviesThe jump in broadband usage will plateau soon. The peak usable speed will probably plateau at 384K Baud.
What demands the 1 gigabit-per-second is real-time videos. Yet, the basic cable television already fulfills such a need.
Most Americans are social creatures. We enjoy watching videos with other people, not alone. Hence, the VHS player never did vanquish the movie theaters. Tickets for the theaters are as expensive as ever, and still the "gang" meets Friday night for a trip to the theater.
So, using the Internet to watch movies by yourself is really a solution to a problem that does not exist. A few geeks may want the gigabit-per-second feed for their pornography, but otherwise, there is little demand for such speeds.
So, what is the utility of the Internet? The utility is information. At the tip of your fingers, you can access the best, most accurate information in the world. Consider Fox News, CNN, "Washington Post", "Wall Street Journal", etc. Of course, search engines like Yahoo! Search enable you to find the information you need to understand, say, the pancreatic cancer that afflicts a member of your family.
Getting this information is sufficiently easy and comfortable at 384K Baud.
By the same token, high-speed Internet has not reached a plateau in, say, China or Korea. The Chinese are anti-social people and are prone to brutality. So, watching videos alone is considered "fun". Chinese culture is vastly different from Western culture.

You are an example
With a nation of approximately 1.3 billion inhabitants, the only way that a government wich blatant disregard for human life and decency can actually THRIVE is because all the Chinese hold attitudes like yours -- either through ignorance or stupidity.
-
Read the truth
Ask the family of Zhou Jiaxiong if Beijing's torture tactics are "subjective". Accuse me of hate and stupidity while Chinese subhumans are ripping off the genitals of their peers because they are suspected of having impregnated their wife a second time.
I only encourage embargoes against nations who engage, as a rule, in anti-democratic inhumane torturous methods, not only against their inhabitants, unfortunately, who sit idly by, but those of other regions as well. -
Get a clue
The article is nothing more than Beijing, via one of its puppet newspapers, bragging about its latest creation (likely the result of one or more Taiwanese attending US universities spying for Beijing). The network, if it even exists, offers nothing to the outside world as it only connects Chinese universities.
World news is important. Maybe we can find something more interesting to post, though, such as accounts of torture in Tibet, which might provide a more accurate picture of what China is all about. -
What's the point?
What's the point in reporting on China rolling out a new network? Regardless of the technological modifications, all content will be strictly monitored and anybody who uses it for methods that Beijing/Taipei doesn't like will be summarily arrested, "tried", and likely executed.
Instead of praising these thugs we should be clamoring for an embargo and boycotting US businesses which employ Chinese scum. -
Good News For Oil Demand: China vs. WestThe popularization of hybrid cars and H-cars (i.e. hydrogren powered cars) is good news for West. Right now, China is sucking the oil out of the same suppliers that normally send the bulk of their oil to the West. The result has been a shortage of gasoline and skyrocketing prices.
These hybrid cars and H cars will help to reduce Western demand for oil and will help to reduce the air pollution in the West. Air pollution is good news for China and will shorten the lifespan of the average Chinese.

Open Source has Devalued the Micro$oft OfferPerhaps, a better explanation for the indifference is that Open Source Software (OSS) has devalued the value of Micro$oft's solution. When you can easily download OpenOffice, the opportunity provided by the class action judgement to get a free upgrade of Micro$oft Office just is not all that beneficial. OpenOffice does 90% of what Micro$oft Office can do, and because OpenOffice does less and focuses on having only what is useful to the consumer, OpenOffice is a faster, more compact package.
Sure. Micro$oft does help the American economy and has aggressively stood up to Chinese thugs in Beijing when they demanded that Micro$oft censor links, on its search engine, to Tibet and human rights. I thank Micro$oft for its distinctly American approach to bashing Chinese thugs, but
... Micro$oft products just do not have the same value that they once had in the distant past, when OSS was not available. -
A Tad More Serious Issue: ChinaI applaud IBM's success in data storage even though IBM has exited the cutthroat market of P.C. drives. Still, I urge caution.
IBM has a subsidiary in China and cannot possibly vet all the Chinese working there. As well, IBM has an affiliate in Taiwan. Of the two groups (i.e. mainland Chinese and Taiwanese), the Taiwanese pose the greater security risk.
The technologies that IBM has developed could be used by the Chinese military. Some Taiwanese, at the request of Beijing, might just xerox the blueprints for this technology and hand it to Chinese intelligence services. One use of high density storage is to store all the intelligence collected by Taiwanese spies on behalf of Beijing.
To IBM, I say, "Tread carefully. Guard your technology. The Chinese wall between IBM-USA and IBM-Taiwan is no protection. Tear it down and sell the Taiwan subsidiary to Acer."

Chinese Employees -- Lack of InnovationBefore you mod me as a "Troll", consider the situation in China. The Chinese tend to be very poor programmers, unlike the Indians (from India). On the other hand, the Chinese tend to be very good at hardware engineering.
We know, based on documents provided by the U.S. Labor Department, that Google hires many Chinese H-1Bs. In fact, 30% of Google's workforce is H-1Bs, of whom many hail from China.
There may be a correlation between the Chinese workforce at Google and the fact that Google has stagnated. Note that the company was originally started by 2 Americans; at the early stages, Google had few Chinese H-1Bs and was quite innovative.
-
Google is Doomed: Good RiddanceThe sad fact about Google is that it quickly acquiesces to the demands of Beijing, by removing "offending" links refering to human rights and Tibet. Further, Google's management prefers H-1B engineers from China (which includes Taiwan province and Hong Kong), and many work at Google.
By contrast, Microsoft does not acquiesce to Beijing and has never removed "offending" links at the request of Chinese thugs. Microsoft also limits the number of H-1Bs that it will hire. I should know. I directly asked Microsoft's representative at a local job fair about favoritism towards Chinese and Indians, and the representative proudly said that the company prefers Americans.

Less News But More Insightful NewsThe successful docking of the Russian spacecraft symbolizes the gradual Westernization of Russia and its gradual integration into the G-7 economies.
Just a few days ago, Putin himself agreed to accept a pro-West president of the Ukraine, taking most of the West off guard.
Unlike China, Russia is destined to be a great ally of America.

Chinese Supercomputers Crack Normal PasswordsThe reality is that the RSA key is a godsend for protecting your accounts. Many Americans are simply unaware of the fact that the Taiwanese have essentially given all the key computer technologies to mainland China. Beijing can now assemble a supercomputer based solely on the technology from Acer, a Taiwanese company with major investments in mainland China. This supercomputer can easily crack the passwords of many accounts at your bank, brokerage, etc.
The RSA will help to protect Western bank/brokerage accounts from Chinese theft. That the majority of stolen credit card numbers end up in the hands of Chinese gangs, aided and abetted by Beijing, in Southeast Asia should surprise no one.

Incoming Asteroids? Use a nuclear warhead.Incoming asteroids are not really much of a problem. There are, at least, 2 solutions. One is to load a Delta 4 rocket with gallons of white paint and then to smash the rocket into the asteroid. The newly painted asteroid will change course ever so slightly as the sun's rays will nudge it away from the earth.
The second solution is to load a hydrogen bomb onto a Delta 4 rocket and to send the contraption to the asteroid. Within a mile from impact, explode the hydrogen bomb. The explosion will nudge the asteroid slightly and send it in a direction that avoids earth.
The catch here is that if we utilize a hydrogren bomb in this way, we must quickly replace it. The Chinese military is eagerly looking for any weakness in our conventional or nuclear arsenal and would use such a weakness to exploit us.

China is Only Winner in Standards BattleThe only winner in the format battle of HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray is China. It does not enforce the claims by foreigners (i.e. non-Chinese) to intellectual property developed anywhere in the West. Many American companies have discovered that their applications for patents in China are purposefully delayed by some bureaucrat. Then, a Chinese company will access that patent application and file another application for the very same patent. The Chinese application will be approved, and Americans (i.e. the original inventors) selling the product using the patent in China will be forced to pay royalties to a Chinese company.
Such is the nature of the evil mind.
This battle between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray has no meaning for Westerners. In China, they will derive no money from the technologies that they have patented for both formats. The situation is a "lose-lose" for the West.

$1000 Says an American Invented the IdeaI'd bet $1000 on the fact that an American invented the idea of tying a parachute to the aircraft. Despite the much vaunted claims of Chinese superiority by Chinese H-1Bs and Indian H-1Bs, nothing beats Yankee ingenuity.
Note that the Personal Computer was invented in the USA.

Wrong: China is Still #The statistics in the original article is misleading. In total volume, the USA may be #1. Yet, if we weight the numbers based on GDP per capita, then China is #1, followed by South Korea.
In other words, the USA has more computers than China. Once China reaches a higher level of prosperity, with the same number of computer desktops possessed by the USA, then China will easily exceed the spam level generated by the USA.
