Re:Meanwhile in rsync land . . .To what I have to add:
#308280 (rickest) reinventing the wheel is exactly what allows us to travel 80mph without even feeling it. the original wheel fell apart at about 5mph after 100 yards. now they're rubber, self-healing, last 4000 times longer. whoever intended the phrase "you're reinventing the wheel" to be an insult was an idiot.

Re:Giant mess.
Everyone wants to reinvent the wheel.
As the wise once said:

<Arang> fax, have you heard about the whole brain size-herd size primate theory?
<Arang> basically, the size of primates' brains corresponds directly to the size of their social group
<Fax> yea
<Fax> don't humans come out to be 50ish?
<Gral_Work> Oh, the monkeysphere?
<Arang> the tiny little gibbons and whatever have like two friends
<Arang> I thought it was 150
<Fax> it's been a while since I saw that article
<Fax> so i dunno
<Arang> wiki says 150
<Gral_Work> 150!??! Well, you people are almost taking up a 3rd of it. I'll have to make some reductions.
<Gral_Work> Arang! You are no longer people.

Re:Leetness and the individual...
Dunno about the rest of Slashdot, but if I try for a nickname and it's taken, I'll come up with a new one rather than append a number. (Of course, this was back in the '90s, I eventually settled on SheeEttin, and I've never seen it taken anywhere.)
I guess I did that because I would pride myself on the creativity of a unique nickname, and as such, I guess I also looked down on someone who just appended numbers.
In any case, when you use leet, you look like this guy. -

Sometimes the qdb.us quote database site has jibberish in its user moderated queue which may be control commands. I used to think it was just some idiot auto posting junk to mess with the site, but who knows
Here are some that may be disappearing soon, because they'll be moderated down.

According to the math on this QDB, the average ejaculation is 7.49400542 petabytes. So I would say less than an ounce.

Re:Easy answerIn the Imaginary Property field, if I take an idea from you, you still have it, so it you don't loose it. What you loose it the opportunity of making money from it, but that is a vastly different issue.
Correction: potentially lose. It has not been adequately demonstrated that losses due to copyright infringement outweigh the marketing advantage of increased exposure. (In other words, piracy leads to some lost sales, and also leads to some sales that would otherwise not happen; studies consistently indicate that these effects approximately cancel out.) This helps explain why most forms of publishing are in fact growth sectors despite the explosive growth of intertube ninjacy (the exceptionally customer-hostile recording industry being the major exception).
As for patents, there are numerous examples of infringements negatively impacting the holder of the alleged property right. These are consistently cases where large companies violate patents held by individual inventors, the very innovators patents supposedly protect.

My list (short, thanks to RSS)
My list is pretty short, thanks to RSS. Google Reader filled up with all my 216 feeds, including Slashdot. (I don't read all 216.) Bloglines is also pretty good. Google News with saved searches for all my favorite topics. Not Easy for semi-random news. This sometimes helps me catch news I'd otherwise miss. Reddit for social news with much higher SNR and nicer design than Digg. For entertainment: QDB.us / random for IRC quotes. lingua.phobo.us (plug for a friend's 'zine
:) Dear Abby for the occasional fucked up story. And a bunch of comics: Achewood, xkcd, Dilbert... -

You have the right to be considered innocent until proven guilty. However, this is only in respect to the government, as you have no choice over what it does.
When it comes to your insurance company, you have entered into that relationship voluntarily.

Earthlink DSLI had Verizon DSL for about a year, with an intermittent but persistent problem. At least once a week, the modem would start acting as if there was interference on the line. The connection would either drop completely or start phasing in and out.
I went through months of troubleshooting with Verizon. Everything from the basics to having a tech come out and replace the phone cable. Finally, I got fed up, and signed up with Earthlink. The price is higher, and I had to sign a contract. And guess what, same problem.
After doing a few more tech support calls, I finally got through to someone who apparently knew what he was doing, because after that day, I haven't had the problem again. But his explanation? "We just put you into safe mode." It's too bad I didn't ask more about that.
Maybe someone here can tell me what that meant?

Re:Moore's Law and the Automobile
It is too bad that Diesel engines have yet to catch on here in the U.S. I used to own a 1986 Toyota Camry with a 2.0-liter turbo-Diesel engine. I got 50mpg on the highway and 35mpg in the city.
- The car was slower than most, but still tolerable and fast enough to merge into highway traffic safely.
- It drove to the shop with a broken alternator belt and a dead battery.
- No batteries to rupture. (Well, just one.)
- Easy to work on. Cheap parts. Most parts were interchangable with the gasoline version. I never had a shop refuse to work on it.
- Very light due to older safety standards. A car this light probably would not be possible today, but new engine technology would make up for it.
