UberCade: Taito Arcade Cabinet MAME conversion
BTW, you linked to byoac... but did you some how miss the 900+ projects in the byoac project example pages?

My experiences...
Disclaimer: I haven not tried hard nor received
my free ipod...
But...
Several friends of mine have... Some have even gotten free flat panel monitors,
and even a free Dell Dimension 4000 system... Apparently, it helps to have
a popular website to promote it...
But the truth of the matter is that SOME of these free offers do exist... Wired
has published stories with mixed results...
Also, since signing up, I haven't noticed *any* increase in snail mail spam... I
did not give out my real phone number, and no credit card is necessary. My
throwaway gmail account has only 8 messages in it (and only 2 may be related...)
so who knows... I am a believer for the time being.... -
Re:I think a fark headline nailed this
"To be honest, it's all about gameplay. If EA released a YMCA basketball game and it had great gameplay, who would care that there weren't NBA players in it. People would buy it and play it. Same thing goes for this Arena Football League videogame. I'm not saying that it will be good, but you shouldn't throw that idea out the window just because it's perceived as a subpar sports league. Videogames can make anything fun."
If that was true the licensing wouldn't be important.
Hey i'm with you on the gameplay, I enjoy "10 yard fight" on my MAME cabinet as much as Madden 200X on my xbox/DC.
But if you are going to have an exclusively licensed deal, it should be worth licensing, eh?
I mean the point to having an NFL license (for example) is that you can play as the real teams (not generic place-teams like tecmo bowl or rbi baseball back in the day) with likenesses of the players and stars of that league. If you can't recognize the players/teams, what value does the license have, with gameplay being equal?
Not that getting a certain license guarantees good gameplay, but hopefully you see my point?

Re:They missed the Arcade ESB
They missed the vector arcade version of Empire Strikes Back.
I hacked a starwars yoke to my MAME arcade cabinet just to play the original vector starwars arcade game.
rampy
PS not sure if my other post made it through -- using too many forums with BBcode I guess...
PSS I'm retarded, I just noticed ESB was mentioned, it's just they released it AFTER RTJ for some reason... never mind. -
*shakes head*
I suggest Ultimarc's ipac encoder or groovy game gears Key Wiz which is what I used in my mame cabinet, fwiw.
and you'll want the obligatory (and sadly missing from the main post) link to Build Your own arcade controls site and very helpful forum/community
Although I used x-arcade parts on my cabinet, I think you'll be happier in the long run if you order from happs directly or buy happs parts from bob roberts.

Re:Does this really apply?
"To me, if TiVo's the best, and still cheaper (at least for the first couple of years of use), why use homebrew except for bragging rights?"
well, as I've stated on many occasions... building your own PVR isn't for everybody. It helps if you like to tinker with PCs/software/etc... not everyone likes to DIY but I do =)
that said, I love my Tivo.. but it isn't everything. I kinda wish I got a replayTV as Tivo's home media options (which you pay more to network your Tivo to your PC, sorta) is a joke.
A tivo with lifetime subscription is 110 (after rebate 40 hours) + 300... 410
I'd much rather pay that in hardware/toys to play with (you do know you are on slashdot, right? =)) and then some to have MORE functionality (like weather modules, RSS feeds, MAME, mp3's, divx, and so on....)...
*shrug* again DIY PVr is not for everyone, but it's not a meritless endeavor. And yes, you may end up spending more, especially if you want it small/sexy looking, than you'd ever pay for a Tivo+subscription...
I must say in the short time I've been running the site, the advancements in the software has been really amazing... SageTV (not free beer/speech... cue boo's and hisses) works awesome with my pvr350 and approaches tivo-esque look/feel/usability...
YMMV,

Why pine away... just build one =) (or convert one --> UberCade: Mame Taito cabinet conversion
As mentioned ealier Build your own arcade controls (be sure to check there forum, where helpful folks like me will help you along with your project... hey quit snickering!)
Also of note is the new "how to" book by the guy who runs byoac... (with my referral link included of course =P ) PRoject Arcade Book
*Shrug* or you could *shudder* use an x-arcade desktop controller if you can't fit a full sized cabinet, or cocktail, or cabaret cabinet in your pad...

x-arcade dual sticks too close together
The one complaint I'd have with the x-arcade is that it's a little tough for two adults to stand side by side and play a game without feeling "crowded"... although they are close enough to play a nice game of robotron... but you can take your friends teeth out if while performing zangief moves in 2player street fighter II =)
I actually used x-arcade joystick and buttons (from an ebay auction... like 20 bucks for 2 happs super clone joysticks and 20 buttons) on my taito mame cabinet conversion
The buttons are made a little bit cheaper/thinner plastic than happs/etc and use cheaper zippy microswitches (as opposed to cherry brand switches) but pretty solid overall... they've survived numerous track and field poundings =)

Re:Slashcode is crap? No, kludgy and hard to deplo
I'm glad to hear thatware is still devloping... I started my site with thatware, but quickly migrated to phpnuke as it had some specific features I dug...
phpnuke is good for some things... but following the migration pattern can be painful if you customize the code much (which seems like a neccessity)... phpnuke.org has a beta of their 5.x code that looks pretty neat... but I wonder if it'll be painful to migrate too...
Keep up the good work with thatware...

The ratings system is pretty hosed. Just look at the mockery the South Park boys did to it with their movie (Every time the MPAA panel suggested taking away a violent scene, they'd add 5 more "fucks, etc" to the dialogue
...or was that vice versa?)
*Shrug* Who can really say what "moral" standards are anyways... Personally I find shitty movies more offensive than brain eating, bare breasts, and vulgarity... but hey...

It's not the studio
There are plenty of boneheads who have "pro" grade studios but don't know how to use them. Yeah its great that you have that 2 inch/24 track/Struder but if you can't put a signal chain together it doesn't matter.... having a 1176 limiter and fancy ass mic pres, and neuman a studio genius makes not...
In short it's the talent/ear not the equipment. There are people with home studios who do amazing things... there are other's who's production quality will be eternally lame no matter what home gear gadget they get...
I do find it encouraging that the price points have dropped and the software is so extensive that if you had enough free time and skills you could make a masterpiece (acoustic treatments/music talent not withstanding)

Just to be clear, it was meant as an example of assinine "marketdroid" type conversation/discussion... *shrug* I get it, they don't... my cheezy point (re-iterating for good reason) is that do you (as a tech reource) want to waste any breath explaining that to business stake holders??

Dealing with this as well...
Besides format (RM vs asf vs qt, etc) bandwith is a big issue... even you are only doing like a marginal 16k audio only stream, multiplied by hundreds or thousands of users (concurrently for a LIVE event) and you've got some manage-ability issues.
What solutions are available today to help with this? Network edge caching, multi cast setttings... *shrug* still looking for answers quite frankly...

Re:1. Fire the managers 2. Design patterns
You probably should keep the program/project managers and get 3. business/product analyst to buffer between the technical resources (what can be done) and the end business client (wants the moon...)
As great as doing everything yourself is... would you rather be coding/designing patterns, or sitting in boring meetings deciding on radio button vs. check box with the marketingdroids ?
just a thought...
